The art of the Emmy submission has long been a strategic tightrope walk — part performance showcase, part calculated gamble. This year’s contenders are playing the game more thoughtfully, and creatively, than ever.

Apple TV+’s “Severance” and “The Studio” lead the pack in drama and comedy, with 27 and 23 nominations, respectively, while HBO Max made history with 142 total nominations — its highest tally yet. Still, while numbers and category domination make for splashy headlines, the real intrigue lies in how nominees carefully curate the episodes meant to win over Emmy voters.

Historically, episode submissions were everything. When Emmy panels were selected from blue-ribbon groups that were required to watch every submitted tape, lesser-known performers could score upsets with a powerful episode — a Tatiana Maslany in “Orphan Black” could sneak past network juggernauts. There were also no-brainer selections, like when Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) had her baby on “Friends,” which all but sealed her Emmy win.

It has been revealed that Netflix users will soon have the opportunity to stream one of the best science-fiction shows of the last few decades. There are already many great sci-fi shows on Netflix, including Stranger Things, Black Mirror, 3 Body Problem, Sense8, Alice in Borderland, Altered Carbon, and Love, Death, & Robots.

With Stranger Things season 5 releasing in three parts in late 2025, 3 Body Problem seasons 2 and 3 in the works, and Alice in Borderland debuting on September 25, many of these sci-fi series continue to have a bright future on the streaming platform.

The latest report comes from industry insider Alex Perez, who was answering fan questions on his The Cosmic Circus Q&a session. According to the official synopsis, Johnson stars as “a washed-up tennis pro who, desperate to save a struggling club and earn his father’s respect, is compelled to break a sacred vow and do the unthinkable: play pickleball.” A release date has not been revealed.

“Why does it always have to end?” That’s the haunting question at the center of the new teaser for Osgood Perkins’ latest film, Keeper. While the teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much, the images of obscured faces, a fish picked clean, frantic doodles of screaming faces, and a terrified red-haired woman looking over her shoulder (possibly the same figure glimpsed outside a stained-glass window) prove we’re in for yet another disturbing entry from Perkins.

What is certain is that the two characters, who we now know as “Liz” (Tatiana Maslany) and Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland), want to know if love can ever truly be kept alive before coming to the conclusion that they’ve both found a keeper.

The writer/director’s “The Monkey,” a gonzo Stephen King adaptation (and one of the best horror movies of the year), came out in February. And already he’s back with another new original film, “Keeper,” out this November. And you can get your first look at his latest, which stars Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, via a new trailer. What makes the trailer for “Keeper” so fascinating is that it’s split in half, with one half dedicated to “Liz” (Maslany’s character) and the other to her partner Malcolm (Sutherland) – we already know something fishy is going on since Liz’s name has quotes around it. And an early teaser suggested that the woods surrounding the house where the story takes place has a dark and twisted history all of its own.

Where are all the sci-fi fans? We've got some really good news to share. We didn't think it would actually happen, but Tatiana Maslany’s hit sci-fi series Orphan Black is finally making its way to Netflix. This marks the first time the series will be available to US Netflix subscribers, though it had already been available on Netflix in other countries.

According to What's on Netflix, the complete Orphan Black series will land on the streaming service on Monday, Sept. 1, 2025. You can expect all five seasons to be available at once on this date. Kathy Bates could be heading for one of the rarest wins in Emmy history. The Oscar winner and two-time Emmy champ is Matlock’s only nomination at the 2025 Emmys — and if she wins Best Drama Actress, she’d be the first performer to take the prize for a lone-nominated show since Tatiana Maslany. Only two other women — Patricia Arquette and Sela Ward — have pulled off the feat this century.

Bates currently leads Gold Derby's odds over Britt Lower (Severance), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), and Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters). Producers Tony Hernandez and Lilly Burns have teamed with former MRC TV president Elise Henderson to launch Counterpart Studios.

The pair who previously ran the production banner Jax Media have quietly been working with Henderson under the Counterpart banner for the past year. Hernandez serves as CEO of Counterpart, while Burns is chief creative officer and Henderson is president. Sarah Madigan, formerly a senior business executive at Jax Media and Imagine, has also signed on as chief operating officer.

The group will leverage its deep experience in production and strong industry relationships to bring business to Counterpart. As was the case with Jax, the company will offer a mix of production services on third-party projects and it will pursue its own in-house development.

“We believe that high-quality, efficient production is the root of creative success, and we have built a company around that model,” Hernandez, Henderson and Burns said in a statement.

The next film by modern master of horror Osgood Perkins is set to be released in November 2025, the same year he released the well-received Stephen King adaptation, The Monkey. Keeper, which will reunite the director with Tatiana Maslany, is a project that has remained almost entirely under wraps. Neon's marketing team has made sure to keep everyone in the dark with an eerie trailer that doesn't show much, and a campaign that has revealed zero details about the plot. However, Maslany and Perkins have revealed what the film is about, and, well, the intrigue has only grown.

The twelfth Star Trek series since Gene Roddenberry’s original CBS show debuted in 1966, Starfleet Academy is the sixth small screen entry in the franchise since the debut of Discovery in 2017. Overseen by franchise-runner Alex Kurtzman, the new series was co-created with Noga Landau, who created the four-season-long Nancy Drew series for The CW. In development since Kurtzman’s original deal with CBS back in 2018, the series has gone through many iterations and timelines before settling on the future setting used since Discovery’s third season.
