Apple TV+ is competing with other powerhouse streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ when it comes to the budgets of its shows. From Jason Sudeikis’s Ted Lasso to Jason Momoa’s Chief of War, these shows boast of high budgets that are spent on location shoots, sprawling soundstages, visual effects, and more. So, which is the most expensive Apple TV+ show right now? It’s See, which also stars Jason Momoa in a lead role.
But why does Apple TV+ bankroll risky, untested projects that are not even associated with any pre-existing IP? It’s to ensure that they remain one of the best production houses to attract high-profile talent, enjoy critical acclaim, and earn subscriber loyalty. So, here are the top 10 costliest productions from Apple TV+, ranked by their budget.

If it felt like television was completing one era and starting another as 2024 dawned, it’s because it really was. Such critical smashes as Succession, Ted Lasso, The Crown, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, and Reservation Dogs took their final bows in 2023, wrapping up the same year as twin strikes of the WGA and SAG. It consequently felt like the TV world was welcoming a group of fresh faces (along with a few acclaimed returnees) this year.

Gold Derby recently honored five of “Masters of the Air’s” Emmy-nominated artisans at a special rooftop FYC event in Culver City, California. Those in attendance for the nine-part, WWII-themed Apple TV+ limited series were composer Blake Neely, co-supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer Michael Minkler, re-recording mixer Duncan McRae, supervising dialogue editor Dave McMoyler and scoring mixer Thor Fienberg. Watch our interviews with all five of these Emmy nominees below by clicking each name.
“Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group, also known as “The Bloody Hundredth,” as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. The wartime epic stars Oscar nominee Austin Butler as Major Gale “Buck” Cleven, Callum Turner as John “Bucky” Egan, Anthony Boyle as Lieutenant Harry Crosby, Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan...

“Masters of the Air” doesn’t fly as high as it does without Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann. No military unit rests on the shoulders of two people, and the Eighth Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group was no different in World War II. Historically known as the Bloody 100th for the tremendous losses it endured, the fearless flyers saw some of the worst action of the war and it did so thousands of feet above the front lines.
But as a piece of cinematic storytelling, the Apple TV+ series from “Band of Brothers” trio Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman needs the profound warmth of Boyle’s Lt. Harry Crosby and Mann’s Major Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal to, ironically, ground its darkest days.
At the top of the call sheet are Austin Butler and Callum Turner, as pilots Major Gale “Buck” Cleven and Major John “Bucky” Egan, respectively.

Cleven’s jacket and hat, and I thought, ‘Well, I should bring it.’ It’s D-Day. People like seeing real stuff,'” Atwood told the audience.
Atwood was joined by her fellow artisans from the Apple TV+ series: supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer Michael Minkler, composer Blake Neely, director of photography Richard Rutkowski and music supervisor Deva Anderson. “Masters of the Air” has no shortage of Emmys allure. With a roster of executive producers that includes Emmy winners Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, a highly acclaimed cast, and the fact that it’s a companion series to “Band of Brothers” (2001) and “The Pacific” (2010), which have won a combined 15 Emmys, expectations were high. The Apple TV+ limited series did not disappoint. Among its many strengths is undoubtedly the star-making performance delivered by Nate Mann as Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, the B-17 commander of the 100th bomb group who flew an astounding 52 successful missions, earning 16 decorations and establishing a legacy that continues to this day.
Mann, whose screen credits include supporting roles in two feature films, “Licorice Pizza” (2021) and “Ex-Husbands” (2023), and this year’s Peacock miniseries, “Apples Never Fall,” is a relative newcomer, but you wouldn’t know it by examining his performance in “Masters of the Air.” He...

Apple TV+'s Masters of the Air tells the nerve-racking experience of American pilots and airmen navigating the skies and trauma of World War II Europe. Produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman, the same team behind Band of Brothers and The Pacific, Masters of the Air illustrates stress, fear, and camaraderie through the eyes of historical figures Gale "Buck" Cleven (Austin Butler), John "Bucky" Egan (Callum Turner), Harry Crosby (Anthony Boyle), Robert "Rosie" Rosenthal (Nate Mann), and others. The final episodes also feature Tuskegee Airmen Robert Daniels (Ncuti Gatwa), Richard Macon (Josiah Cross), and Alexander Jefferson (Branden Cook)—representing the first unit of Black pilots in the United States Army Air Forces, trained at Tuskegee, Alabama. Unfortunately, Masters of the Air skims over the experience of Black pilots, does not give their characters closure, and misses the opportunity to tell a full history of the war.

Now that AppleTV+ has wrapped their 9-part limited series Masters of the Air, the streamer has released a documentary that honors the real-life events and characters seen in the show. The new documentary called The Bloody Hundredth is directed by Mark Herzog and Laurent Bouzereau, and details the real airmen played by the show's stars, Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Nate Mann, Barry Keoghan, and Anthony Boyle – members of the 100th Bomb Group of the 332 Fighter Group that flew dozens of pivotal missions in and around Nazi Germany during World War II.

Masters of the Air star Nate Mann explains why Rosie reenlists after completing his 25 missions in the Apple TV Plus limited series. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks as a Playtone-Amblin production, Masters of the Air chronicles the true story of the 100th Bomb Group during World War II. The well-reviewed series stars Mann as Lt. Robert "Rosie" Rosenthal, and the character is one of the lucky few who completes his 25 mandatory bombing missions. Despite having earned himself a ticket home, Rosie decides to continue his service.
In a recent interview with THR following the Masters of the Air finale, Mann breaks down why Rosie decides to reenlist and rejoin the fight. Read his full comment below:
“Initially, I didn’t know what to make of it. It’s almost baffling to think about the odds, the statistics, the numbers, and, of course, the harrowing nature of what those 25 missions were for him.

Masters of the Air was a labor of love for executive producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. The Apple TV+ series marks the third and final installment of the trio’s war drama miniseries, after Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
The series took three years to create and cost between $250 million and $300 million to produce, including a hefty $60 million in Covid compliance costs to film during the pandemic. The result was an epic nine-part series with 325 speaking parts and an amazing cast of up-and-coming actors.
“The best stories are from history,” said Goetzman during a discussion at the Deadline and Apple TV+ event Inside the Finale, joined by series cast members Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Nate Mann and Anthony Boyle. “Nonfiction is always more fascinating than fiction, and there’s no greater stories of human cost, triumph, passion, love… the biggest story of...

Masters of the Air co-creator John Orloff defends the show's characterizations, stating they accurately reflect the real-life figures of the time. He says Buck and Bucky feel very Hollywood because Air Force pilots at the time really acted like that. Orloff contrasts Buck and Bucky's Hollywood vibe with characters like Nate Mann's Rosie, who take things more seriously.
One of the Masters of the Air producers has responded to criticisms about the characterizations of Buck and Bucky. The characters, who are played by Austin Butler and Callum Turner respectively, are best friends and co-leads in the Apple TV+ World War II Air Force show, which is based on the 2007 Donald L. Miller nonfiction book of the same name. With their onscreen bond that feels similar to Steve and Bucky in the Captain America movies, the pair have drawn criticism online for feeling too Hollywood.

Alison Brie’s character Amy in “Apples Never Fall” does not operate like your typical eldest sibling. She lacks a steady source of income, is emotionally erratic and her housing situation is one shared with a group of graduate students.

“Masters of the Air” soared to become Apple TV+’s highest-watched series launch ever when the first episodes dropped in January. While it might seem like a no-brainer that the team behind “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” — including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman — would hit it out of the park with a new World War II series, it wasn’t plain sailing, in large part thanks to Covid, which resulted in numerous delays. “It made the production very difficult,” Goetzman told Variety ahead of the series launch.
But also, in keeping with Apple TV+’s low-key publicity strategy, “Masters of the Air” somehow debuted on the streamer with minimal publicity, despite the fact that in the period between being pre- and post-production its key cast, including Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan and Ncuti Gatwa had been propelled from jobbing actors to leading men.

In the opening scene of Apples Never Fall, Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) takes a leisurely bike ride through West Palm Beach, Florida. She’s got the time, having recently retired after decades of coaching tennis alongside her husband, Stan (Sam Neill). Joy cycles by palm trees and mansions and stops to browse stands of impossibly perfect fruit. But as she passes tennis courts bustling with players, her mouth curves into a wistful frown.
A sense of melancholy nags at the superficial idyll of Joy’s excursion, only to burst into outright dread when we see her bike overturned in the street, its back wheel still spinning and its frame splattered with blood, and Joy nowhere to be found. This scene introduces an alluring air of mystery regarding Joy’s inner life and the nature of her seemingly utopian environment. Unfortunately, that intrigue proves incredibly short-lived—a victim of Apples Never Fall’s plodding pace,...

Exclusive: Melanie Marnich is a huge fan of Big Little Lies scribe Liane Moriarty’s work, but when showrunning an adaptation of Moriarty’s Apples Never Fall, Marnich blocked the HBO hit from her consciousness almost entirely.
Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, which stars 2024 Oscar-nominee Annette Bening, launches tomorrow and is in international competition at next week’s Series Mania, was made with a Big Little Lies-free lens, Marnich explained to Deadline.
“I admire Big Little Lies and think it’s brilliant but I had to literally put it out my mind,” she said in the days leading up to the Lille market. “I knew I had to quite quickly ignore all [Moriarty’s past work] and ask what this book wants to be and what the best way is to honor it. How do I ignore all that came before to find the best voice and vision for this translation?”

In "Masters of the Air" episode 8, Rosenthal compares Crosby to DC's Captain Marvel, not Marvel's superhero. The reference is to Shazam, who was originally known as Captain Marvel in the comics. The episode centers around Crosby missing D-Day due to his exhaustion.
Masters of the Air episode 8 includes a reference to Captain Marvel, but the miniseries isn't alluding to the Marvel Comics character. The 2024 Apple TV+ war drama, created by John Shiban and John Orloff and produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, centers around the actions of the 100th Bomb Group, a United States Air Force unit, in England during World War II. The nine-episode television event features an ensemble cast, with other characters more prominent than others. But the Captain Marvel name-drop occurs during a scene between Anthony Boyle's Lt. Crosby and Nate Mann's Major Rosenthal in episode 8.

When a World War II drama series about airmen features the likes of Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Callum Turner, it’s reasonable to presume that one of them would be playing the story’s quintessential hotshot pilot. Instead, that honor belongs to Nate Mann, who portrays Lieutenant Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, one of the most decorated real-life B-17 pilots to serve in WWII, on Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air. Rosie had already established a successful career as a lawyer in New York until the attack on Pearl Harbor eventually led him to Laredo Air Force Base, where he developed his crack piloting skills.
Knowing full well the significance of Rosenthal both on the screen and in real life, Mann refused to gloss over the details of the B-17 and the many responsibilities that a bomber pilot has before, during and after a flight. So he took the words...

While you weren’t watching, Amazon’s Prime Video quietly blossomed into a haven for adult animation. The streaming service’s latest addition to its lineup, the sci-fi comedy “The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy,” is the brainchild of Cirocco Dunlap, whose résumé includes Netflix’s “Russian Doll” and “Big Mouth.” The show, which is now streaming, follows the adventures of two alien doctors, Klak and Sleech, as they treat a myriad of strange illnesses and maladies afflicting the brilliant and unique beings that populate the titular galaxy.
While the show’s writers are clearly having fun trying to stretch the limits of the imagination, the series also dedicates a significant amount of its runtime to telling relatable stories about universally understood medical conditions, too, like anxiety. The result is a well-rounded, enjoyable comedy that deserves your attention. When you toss in an impressive voice cast that also includes Kieran Culkin,...

Masters of the Air dives into WWII aerial combat, showing the toll on young men and the horrors faced. We have a clip from the upcoming sixth episode. The series features a stellar ensemble cast and is executive produced by the people behind Band of Brothers, including Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. From bombing raids over Nazi Germany to Pow camps, the show provides a unique and crucial look at history.
Masters of the Air is now more than halfway through its epic nine episodes, with "Part Five" leaving audiences unsettled and on the edge of their seats. In "Part Six," premiering on Apple TV+ Feb. 23, 2024, we will get to see what happened to Egan, who will face the essence of Nazi evil. It won't be a pretty picture. But sure to be prettier is the introduction of Bel Powley as an intriguing British officer, Landra Wingate, who meets Crosby at Oxford.

Masters of the Air is the newest tribute to World War II veterans from Spielberg and Hanks. All of their projects on the subject, including Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and The Pacific, concentrate on different aspects of the Great War and make for good viewing companion pieces. As the new series follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany, the review from our own Alex Maidy spoke highly of the show. He stated, “It is unlikely that any series will equal the acclaim that Band of Brothers achieved. Still, the blend of feature film directors and a cast of actors more than up to the task, Masters of the Air is a powerful companion to that HBO series and ranks slightly higher than The Pacific.

Peacock has released the full trailer of Apples Never Fall, the limited series starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill, based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel.
“You can spend a lifetime with someone as a wife or as a mother, but you can never really know who they are,” Bening’s Joy says in the trailer.
The series revolves around the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family, anchored by former tennis coaches Stan (Neill) and Joy (Bening), who have sold their successful tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives.
Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Essie Randles play Stan and Joy’s adult children in the 7-episode series written and executive produced by Melanie Marnich.

The World War II drama series "Masters of the Air," created by John Shiban and John Orloff and currently airing on AppleTV+, takes place in 1943 and follows Usaaf majors as they are transferred to England to aid the Allied war effort. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s collaboration on Saving Private Ryan spawned the critically acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers, which chronicled the infantry troops on the ground in Europe during World War II. It was a massive hit, followed by The Pacific, an equally great series focused on the Pacific Theater during the war. Now, the producers are back with a third installment in their chronicle of WWII, Masters of the Air. Focused on the United States air forces during the 1940s, this series is bound to be another substantial win for Spielberg, Hanks, and all involved. Read our rave review here!

First, it had to live up to the legacy of its extraordinary predecessor, HBO’s 2001 limited series Band of Brothers, which some consider to be their all-time favorite war “movie.” BoB‘s successor, 2010’s The Pacific, showed, if anything, what a high bar the original set. And then there are the challenges of pulling off an air-war epic — it’s inherently tougher (for reasons we’ll get into), and potentially far more expensive (all those special effects shots), than infantry stories. Perhaps that’s why it’s taken more than a decade for Masters of the Air — which is based on Donald L. Miller’s book — to make the journey from concept to screen.

“Not Much Thicker Than A Coke Can”: Masters Of The Air Episode 1’s Gnarly Injury Explained By Expert
An Air Force expert confirms that the gnarly injury depicted in Masters of the Air episode 1 is historically accurate, as freezing cold temperatures on B-17s could result in frostbite and similar injuries. Masters of the Air episode 1 sees a gunner accidentally rip the skin off his hands after grabbing a freezing cold gun. While the show accurately captures the environment, relationships, and B-17 designs of World War II, it omits certain content due to time constraints.
Air Force experts reveal that one particularly gnarly injury from Masters of the Air episode 1 is historically accurate. Masters of the Air is the spiritual successor to Band of Brothers and The Pacific, and follows a United States Air Force unit, the 100th Bomb Group, during its service in World War II. Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
