Disney Channel is getting back into the scripted comedy game with two new live-action comedies set to debut in 2025!

Since the 2000s, Disney Channel has specialized in live-action comedies aimed at the tween market. That’s included now iconic shows like Lizzie McGuire, Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven, Wizards of Waverly Place, and more. It’s a great source of material for the channel and sparked scores of new stars.

It is interesting how Disney has joined in on the “sequel series” trend with Girl Meets World, Raven’s Home and the newly debuted Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. While there has been a buzz on cable networks cutting back on scripted series, Disney is still going strong.

Now, per TV Line, Disney is working on two big live-action series set to debut in 2025. One is a live-action take on a hit animated series while the other may introduce a hot new band to the Disney roster!

Disney has announced two new music-driven comedy series to premiere in 2025 on Disney Channel and Disney+.

One of them, “Vampirina,” is based on the children’s books by Anne Maria Pace and inspired by the Disney Jr. animated series from Chris Nee. The new series follows a young vampire girl who leaves Transylvania to attend a performing arts boarding school and pursue her passion for music — all while keeping her identity a secret, “something that’s made more challenging when her overprotective father charges an overzealous ghost to live with her at the school,” per the logline.

The other series, “How We Became the Biggest Band in the World,” follows three members of a famous pop group, Electric Bloom, as they reminisce and tell the story of their band and friendship, starting with the day they met in middle school. According to the logline, “the girls go on a journey...

On the heels of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place‘s launch (and some cancellations in recent months), Disney Branded Television has greenlit two new, music-driven comedies: a live-action take on Vampirina, and How We Became the Biggest Band in the World.

Disney Branded Television has given series greenlights to two music-driven, live-action comedies – How We Became The Biggest Band in the World (working title) and Vampirina (working title). Both are slated to premiere next year on Disney Channel and Disney+.

The series orders are part of Ayo Davis’, president, Disney Branded Television’s, strategy of building a new Disney Channel and Disney+ lineup of multi-cam sitcoms for kid audiences. The new slate began rolling out this week with sequel series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, executive produced by Selena Gomez.

“How We Became the Biggest Band in the World (wt) and Vampirina (wt) are two standout additions to Disney Channel’s comedy slate,” said Davis. “Both new series are full of all the elements we know our young audiences love: relatable, aspirational characters, upbeat music and plenty of laughter, friendship and heart.”

Dhar Mann has launched a new series, and he’s getting ready for a move to the big screen. The entrepreneurial creator, whose moralistic videos have received 11 billion life views on YouTube, is developing new IP based around popular characters Jay and Mikey.

Jay (portrayed by Shaun Dixon) and Mikey (Kaido Lee Roberts) are a pair of middle school troublemakers who occasionally appear together in Dhar Mann videos. In their typical videos, they attempt to concoct mischievous schemes before ultimately receiving the justice they (karmically) deserve.

Despite their knack for bad behavior, Jay and Mikey have become two of the most popular characters in the Dhar Mann universe. When they had a long absence from the channel, fans signed a petition in hopes of bringing them back.

As it turned out, Jay and Mikey’s status as a Dhar Mann duo was far from over. A recent short-form upload told viewers “what happened to Mikey.

“Nobody messes with my family!” shouts Queen Latifah, aiming a revolver at baddies during a late moment in “End of the Road.” It is one of several points in this Netflix thriller where the blatancy of undiluted cliché has an effect rather more comical than intended. Taking a brisk route from the pedestrian to the preposterous, Millicent Shelton’s slick but silly film diminishes its social-commentary edge by painting an African American family’s cross-country trip in cartoonishly broad terms, imperiled by crazy and/or criminal “crackers” at every junction.

Director and cast do their best — well, maybe not their best, but their competent professional duty — with a formulaic, contrived screenplay. Still, the results do no one much credit, landing closer to overripe cheese than taut suspense, or even guilty-pleasure terrain. “End” launches on the streamer Sept. 9.

When you’re bringing together two outsized personalities like Queen Latifah and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges for a family car trip deep into redneck territory, the least you could try to do is make it a little funny. But the Netflix feature End of the Road plays things more or less straight, eschewing comedy for a run-of-the-mill thriller that winds up being neither original nor particularly thrilling.

Directed by TV veteran Millicent Shelton (30 Rock, Black-ish, Jessica Jones and many other shows), the feature heads to familiar places despite focusing on a Black family caught in a dangerous white world of drugs, guns, bigotry and violence. There’s definitely some gas in its tank in the opening sections, which are somewhat promising, but then the story takes a predictable route that fails to deliver enough suspense or interest to go the full distance.

Netflix’s 2022 “Netflix & Chills” lineup will include a documentary series on Jeffrey Dahmer, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and a thriller based on true events and starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. The Halloween-inspired September and October slate also includes a feature film based on a Stephen King story as well as Wendell & Wild, a new animated film written by Henry Selick and Jordan Peele.

Marlon Wayans and Kelly Rowland serve up more family-friendly frights in The Curse of Bridge Hollow, while Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington lead the star-studded cast of the fantasy film, The School for Good and Evil. Netflix thriller End of the Road pits Queen Latifah and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges up against a killer, and we’ve learned today that it’s premiering this week, on Friday, September 9.

Netflix previews, “In this high-octane action thriller, a cross-country road trip becomes a highway to hell for Brenda and her family. Alone in the New Mexico desert, they have to fight for their lives when they become the targets of a mysterious killer.”

Beau Bridges, Mychala Faith Lee, Shaun Dixon, and Frances Lee McCain also star.

Millicent Shelton directed the thriller, written by Christopher J. Moore and David Loughery.

Producers include Tracey E. Edmonds, Mark Burg, and Brad Kaplan. Executive producers are Queen Latifah, Shakim Compere, Ben Pugh, Erica Steinberg, and Daniel Jason Heffner.

If you’re looking for a fright this fall, Netflix has you covered. The streamer has unveiled its “Netflix and Chills” slate of new horror movies and TV shows coming to Netflix in October and beyond. This includes films like the witchy “The School for Good and Evil,” which debuts Oct. 19 and stars Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington. There’s also Tim Burton’s TV series “Wednesday,” which doesn’t yet have a release date but is a series-long spin on the Addams Family daughter starring Jenna Ortega.
