Pierre-Antoine Capton
Pierre-Antoine Capton, the co-founder and CEO of Mediawan, was named Knight of the Legion of Honor by French President Emmanuel Macron during a ceremony held at the Elysée Palace in Paris.

Capton was honored alongside other French figures who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s cultural landscape, including the filmmaker Costa Gavras, actor and novelist Marlène Jobert, contemporary artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, historian Pierre Nora, choreographer Claude Bessy, journalist Jean-Claude Narcy and conductor Jean-Claude Casadesus.

A former indie TV producer who rose through the ranks, Capton co-founded Mediawan with telco billionaire Xavier Niel and financier Matthieu Pigasse in 2015 and has turned it into an international powerhouse with a raft of strategic acquisitions, including France’s Ab Productions, the U.K.’s Drama Republic, Italy’s Palomar and Brad Pitt’s Plan B. Radical Eco-Activist Sci-Fi Series ‘Fahrenheit’ Boarded by Orange Studio, Ocs
Image
Orange Studio and pay TV group have boarded “Fahrenheit,” an international sci-fi series produced by Noor Sadar’s Mediawan-owned White Lion Films.

“Fahrenheit” was created by Guillaume Lemans, whose credits include “Anything For Her” and “Point Blank,” as well as Magali Rossitto and Mathieu Delozier. Orange Studio is a co-producer and will handle international sales with Mediawan Rights.

The eight-part series, which blends action and suspense, is set in the near future and follows small groups of hard-line eco-activists who carry out multiple destructive actions, attacks and targeted murders. These are mostly idealistic young people who believe the world is being threatened by ultra-capitalism. Mateo, a young and impetuous CIA recruit, is sent to Los Diablos, in Latin America, to infiltrate one of these activist groups, the Mandrills, and track down its leader, Adam, a charismatic yet dangerous man.

Lemans will be showrunner of the original series that will shoot in English and Spanish.

Mediawan Plans Rejig Post Lagardere Takeover, Buys Stake in Spain’s Weekend Studio (Exclusive)
Image
Mediawan, one of Europe’s most thriving independent production-distribution groups, is looking to expand its leadership further into Europe with the acquisition of Lagardere Studios and a minority stake in Madrid-based banner Weekend Studio.

Following last month’s clearance by the anti-trust board, Mediawan has finalized its takeover of Lagardere Studios, an expansive French TV producer-distributor comprised of 27 companies, including the Spanish banner Boomerang, whose hit series include “The Time in Between” and “Mum detective;” Atlantique Productions, whose credits include Damien Chazelle’s Netflix series “The Eddy”; and Imagissime, the documentary producers behind hit Netflix documentary series “Who Killed Little Gregory?”

Pierre-Antoine Capton, chairman of Mediawan, said the company is now getting ready to integrate Lagardere Studios’ talent and labels into the org and is preparing to reorganize in order to create more synergies.

“With these new acquisitions we are going to strengthen our footprint in Spain, the Netherlands and Finland,...

French TV Sees Big Gains But Future May Be Shaped by Streamers
Image
With cameras rolling again and commissioners hungry for fresh content, some of France’s biggest TV companies such as Newen, Mediawan and Federation Entertainment have so far been spared from major setbacks caused by the pandemic. Down the line, however, French players headed to Mipcom might have to rely more on streamers and international sources of financing as French broadcasters, which play a major role in funding content, could reduce their investment in 2021 as they cope with the continued drop in advertising revenues during the health crisis.

For now, at least, the massive restart of TV production in France has given industry executives some confidence in their business prospects.

When the lockdown ended in May, the French government set up a temporary indemnity fund of €50 million ($58 million) for canceled or postponed TV and film shoots during the pandemic; the fund was then doubled to €100 million ($117 million) by a pool of...

France’s Broadcasting Reform Bill Sets TV Networks Against Indie Producers
With a long-gestating broadcasting reform bill looming in France, local TV groups such as Canal Plus and TF1 are gearing up to lobby hard and fight independent producers in order to increase IP ownership and retain rights for the series they finance.

Under current agreements between producers guilds and TV groups, French TV networks like Canal Plus are allowed to dedicate less than 15% of their investment obligations to series produced in-house, which forces them to rely almost entirely on third-party productions. For France Televisions, M6 and TF1, the limits are set at 17%, 25% and 30%, respectively. This has allowed French independent producers to thrive: They deliver 80% of the fiction productions in France, which generates €800 million ($880 million) yearly, according to the Uspa producers guild.

The French system also limits broadcasters’ rights ownership to three years, even for series that they almost fully finance. This has forced TV networks to repurchase rights to these...

‘Taken’ Canceled by NBC, Being Shopped Elsewhere
NBC has canceled drama “Taken.” The series is being shopped elsewhere as producers produced by EuropaCorp TV USA and Universal Television seek a new U.S. platform for the series, whose title has strong international brand recognition.

The series serves as a prequel to the hit action film franchise of the same name that starred Liam Neeson, with “Vikings” star Clive Standen taking over the role of former Green Beret Bryan Mills. After a personal tragedy leaves him badly shaken, Mills is recruited by the CIA, with each mission helping him build up the “very particular set of skills” that enthralled fans of the film series.

NBC moved “Taken” from its Friday perch in April, shifting the drama to Saturdays.

After the show was renewed for a second season, showrunner Alexander Cary departed with Greg Plageman taking over. Shortly thereafter, cast members Gaius Charles, Brooklyn Sudano, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Michael Irby,...

Mediawan says it also plans to acquire 60% stake in Mon Voison Productions.

Luc Besson

Burgeoning audiovisual content platform Mediawan has acquired three French production companies including Storia Television, the new outfit created to take over the activities of EuropaCorp TV excluding its Us series.

The Paris-based company – founded by French producer Pierre-Antoine Capton, telecom tycoon Xavier Nils and investment banker and venture capitalist Mathieu Pigasse in 2015 – announced the deal on Monday afternoon (January 15).

The platform also revealed it was in exclusive negotiations to buy a majority stake in Makever, an umbrella group comprising six independent production studios.

Their shows include Kaboul Kitchen; the International Emmy Award-winning telefilm Don’t Leave Me, about a mother’s struggle to de-radicalise her jihadi bride daughter; and Captain Sharif.

Mediawan said it was also planning to acquire a 60% stake in Mon Voison Productions (Mvp). The production house set up by former talent agent-turned-producer and actor Dominique Besnehard and producer Michel Feller is best known...

Luc Besson's EuropaCorp plans job cuts in France
22 jobs could be axed from operations in France.

Source: Europacorp

‘Valerian’

Luc Besson’s beleaguered film production and distribution company EuropaCorp announced on Monday that it could axe 22 posts from its operations in France.

“EuropaCorp began a consultation process with staff representatives on 11th January to put in place a new structure in France,” the company said in a statement.

“If the plan were adopted, the workforce in France would number 57 personnel once it has been carried out,” it added.

The company said that such a workforce would correspond to its operational needs as it puts in place a strategy – announced end-November - to re-focus on its core activities of film production, TV series and international sales.

Under that strategy, EuropaCorp plans to produce two to three English-language features and up to two French-language films annually.

The strategy also envisaged continued involvement in English-language TV series even though the company had sealed a deal for the sale of...

TNT Buys ‘Artificial Intelligence’, A New Show By Luc Besson & Bill Wheeler
TNT made a major play in acquiring Artificial Intelligence, a new show that will revolve around an “escaped” AI, and the efforts to monitor, stop, prevent, understand whatever it may be trying to do. The show is written by Luc Besson (who may direct the pilot) and Bill Wheeler, and marks a new step in TNT’s growing effort to include… “out of the ordinary” programming.

With Lucy 2 and the massive-budget Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets already on his plate, this shift in gears may make for one of television’s most interesting new shows. Considering the rather open description, which could lead us through a unique vision of what it means to live with an AI “out there,” there’s no telling exactly where this show could take audiences.

Still, this one might really come down to casting, and like a lot of Luc Besson’s projects,...

TNT Plans Luc Besson Sci-Fi TV Series
TNT has picked up EuropaCorp TV USA's original science fiction series "Artificial Intelligence" - the first time "The Fifth Element" and "Lucy" director Luc Besson has written a television series for the Us market.

The series essentially sounds like "Species" but with an A.I. rather than an alien. In it an artificial intelligence entity escapes its laboratory confinement and starts carrying out mysterious plans. The AI's creator assembles a team of specialists to discern its objective and warn the world of imminent dangers.

Besson and Bill Wheeler co-created and will write and executive produce the series. Besson is also reportedly considering directing the pilot, the first he has ever done.

Matthew Gross, Edouard de Vesinne and Thomas Anargyros would also executive produce.

'Taken' TV Show Finds Its Young Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson in Taken (2008)
Back in September, NBC issued a straight-to-series order for a prequel TV series based on the hit action movie franchise Taken. We haven't heard much about the series since then, but today we have word from The Hollywood Reporter that the show has found its leading man, Vikings star Clive Standen. The actor will play a younger version of Liam Neeson's Bryan Mills in the series, which is set in modern-day.

In the original Taken, Liam Neeson starred as Bryan Mills, a retired CIA agent who springs into action when his daughter (Maggie Grace) is kidnapped during a trip to Paris. After contacting one of the thugs who took his daughter, Mills delivered an iconic speech to one of his daughter's kidnappers, revealing the "very particular set of skills" he acquired over a long career, which makes him "a nightmare for people like you." We see these skills in...

Clive Standen Inks Deal To Topline NBC’s Taken Prequel Series As Young CIA Agent
Before stepping foot on the icy hills of Everest, actor Clive Standen carved out a career in period dramas, be it Camelot or History’s acclaimed Vikings series, where he plays the role of Rollo. That’s all about to change now that The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Standen will headline NBC’s upcoming Taken prequel series, stepping into the shoes of a young Liam Neeson.

Chronicling the formative years of Neeson’s hardboiled super agent Bryan Mills, the network’s high-profile offshoot will document Mills’ first foray into the CIA, and how he accrued that particular set of skills in the first place.

A prequel at its core, Luc Besson – director behind the 2008 sleeper hit – is attached to executive producer NBC’s straight-to-series project. Alexander Cary of Homeland fame will pen the script and executive produce opposite Besson. Producing duties will be leveraged between Matthew Gross, Edouard de Vesinne and Thomas Anargyros,...
