The original British series, which encapsulates a very fictionalized version of the Austen family, was critically acclaimed and loved by fans. So, a follow-up is a great idea to delve into more aspects of the beloved family.

The upcoming series will be based on The Elopement by Gill Hornby, whose other work became the crux of the original series. While most details about the follow-up are kept under wraps, Keeley Hawes and key cast members are set to return. The original series was based on a score of letters between Jane and her sister Cassandra Austen and chronicles their lives and loves.

Exclusive: Keeley Hawes and key cast are on board Miss Austen Returns, a follow-up to Masterpiece period drama Miss Austen, and which is in the works from Bonnie Productions.

Miss Austen was adapted from Gill Hornby’s novel of the same name. Christine Langan, whose Bonnie Productions made the series, tells Deadline that Hornby’s recently published follow-up, ‘The Elopement’, forms the spine of a new series Bonnie is working up with the title Miss Austen Returns.

Miss Austen writer Andrea Gibb is currently penning scripts. As with the earlier series, the show is expected to be a co-production with Masterpiece in association with Federation Stories and the BBC, which showed the first series in the UK.

Exclusive: Cj Beckford and Mirren Mack will lead the cast of UK indie feature Arthur & Clara, the directorial debut of Kieran Bourne.

Arthur & Clara is a romantic comedy about a filmmaker whose identity crisis is affecting his writing of a superhero story; and an insecure film star who goes missing from her press tour. The duo meet at a farmhouse and form a connection.

Production is slated for Q3 this year in Cornwall.

The film is produced by Oriane Pick for UK company Candid Broads, which is also making folk horror Black Samphire this year.

The BBC released a trailer for upcoming drama series Miss Austen, with Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, Line of Duty, It’s A Sin) starring as Jane Austen’s sister Cassandra, on Tuesday and unveiled a Sunday, Feb. 2 launch date.

In the U.S., the series will air on Masterpiece on PBS from Sunday, May 4.

Screen International, in association with Screen Scotland, has revealed the line-up for the second edition of its Rising Stars Scotland talent spotlight.

The biannual programme started in 2022 and aims to identify and promote the next generation of Scottish filmmakers and actors to the international industry.

Rising Stars Scotland is a joint initiative from Screen Scotland and Screen International, and is an offshoot of Screen’s UK & Ireland Stars of Tomorrow showcase.

Just days after the death of legendary TV producer Norman Lear at age 101, the new entertainment special “Norman Lear: A Life on Television” will air on CBS this Friday at 8 p.m., in addition to streaming on Paramount+.

The hourlong special, presented by “Entertainment Tonight,” will feature new interviews with Jimmie Walker of “Good Times” and Mackenzie Phillips of “One Day at a Time,” along with other stars of the comedies Lear created. An interview with Lear and “Entertainment Tonight” host Kevin Frazier to celebrate Lear’s 100th birthday a few years ago will also be featured. In the interview, Lear discussed his lengthy career in depth.

As a screenwriter and producer, Lear produced, wrote, created and developed over 100 shows, including “Sanford and Son,” “All in the Family” and “One Day at a Time” for CBS.

Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine are a devilish mother-son duo in Starz period piece “Mary and George.”

The historical psychodrama follows Moore’s transformation into 17th century staple Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, who set out to take over the throne by having her son George (Galitzine) seduce King James I (Tony Curran).

The seven-part limited series is created by playwright D.C. Moore who was also behind “Killing Eve.” Moore penned the series inspired by Benjamin Woolley’s nonfiction book “The King’s Assassin.” Hermanus helms the series as lead director. The show is produced by Hera Pictures in association with Sky Studios, and will premiere as a Starz original series in the U.S. and Canada.

The period drama, whose U.S. and Canada rights were acquired by Starz, follows a “treacherous mother and son who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the Court of England and the bed of King James,” according to the official logline.

Inspired by a true story, Moore takes on the role of Countess of Buckingham Mary Villiers, who guided her son, George, to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in 17th century England in the hopes of becoming his all-powerful lover.

“Mother, have you found me a wife yet?” Galitzine’s George asked in the teaser, to which Moore’s Mary responds, “I think we aim higher.”

It’s not clear why AMC dropped the drama series, but it comes as AMC has been cost-cutting and axing shows such as including Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and second seasons of Pantheon, Moonhaven and 61st Street.
