Some of the best TV shows, like Game of Thrones and The Wire, have dared to kill off their main characters, creating shocking and memorable moments. Shows that defy plot armor and keep audiences guessing produce the most thrilling scenes on television, with a genuine sense of risk and suspense. When normal people interact with killers, like in Fargo, it leads to unpredictable deaths and creates an explosion of suspense and surprise.
All TV shows have plot armor to a certain extent, ensuring major characters survive through certain situations where, logically, their deaths would be more than likely. Plot armor is a term used in film and TV to describe where a key character is protected from danger and death by the necessity of the plot. Sometimes, the story just has to keep going, even if that sacrifices some of the show's realism. However, when TV shows dare to defy...

October marks the start of spooky season, but really 2023 has brought the scares since last winter. It was difficult to narrow down the year’s best horror into just 10 books—and we stopped just short of Halloween, which conveniently coincides with several more creepy book releases including Nat Cassidy’s Nestlings—but these eerie selections sum up how horror has outdone itself so far this year.
Haunted houses abound, from abandoned homes you dare each other to sneak into to summer getaways for artists starved for space, but each sentient building has a unique torture for its visitors and inhabitants. The more meta offerings find the uncanny in everything from bloody memoirs to sinister home improvement YouTube channels. Families are grimly united by demonic secrets, or brutally separated by abduction and misfortune. Whether your tastes run more supernatural or more toward the mundane horrors of neighbor turning on neighbor, you...

Shetland is a gripping Scottish crime drama set in the eponymous Scottish archipelago, known for its darker and more sinister edge. The Shetland cast has seen changes over the years, but the performances continue to impress, with the show remaining a critical darling. The show reinvents the small-town crime genre with each passing year, making it one of the best shows set in Scotland.
Even though the Shetland cast has grown and changed over the course of its near-decade on the air, the featured players never fail to deliver in the gripping Scottish crime drama. Debuting in 2013 on BBC One, Shetland is set on the eponymous Scottish archipelago and follows the men and women of the local police force who investigate crimes that disrupt the sleepy community. With its distinctly Scottish environs and small-town crime aspects, Shetland is a unique specimen among other British crime dramas because of its darker and more sinister edge,...

Nick Cutter and Andrew F. Sullivan's new twisted haunted house tale, The Handyman Method, is now available and we have an excerpt that Daily Dead readers can check out right now!
"In The Handyman Method, the Saban family moves into an unfinished development community, and cracks begin to emerge in both their new residence and their lives. As a father wrestling with his unemployment and uncertain place in the world, Trent Saban’s attempts at DIY home repairs lead him down an online rabbit hole—where a paranormal radicalization surreptitiously takes hold. Stepping into the sole bread-winner role, his wife Rita tries to hold the family together as matters spiral out of control, going from bad to worse, even as their son Milo, a boy left to his own devices, exhibits sinister side effects of far too much screentime."

The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.
John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave. And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of theoretical physicist Cole Parsons washes up at a local park.

His new act, BerserkerGang, is being hatched in partnership with horror genre professionals Michael Paszt, James Fler and Andrew T. Hunt of Raven Banner; Rodrigo Gudiño, filmmaker and founder of Rue Morgue magazine; and producer Pasha Patriki of Hangar 18 Media.

Author Nick Cutter’s novel The Deep was released back in 2015 (you can pick up a copy Here), and genre legends Clive Barker and Stephen King were among the readers who were shaken by the story. Barker said the book is “utterly terrifying”. King said The Deep “scared the hell out of me and I couldn’t put it down”, adding that the book was “old-school horror at its best”. Now Deadline reports that a series adaptation of the novel is in the works at Amazon Studios, with C. Henry Chaisson – whose credits include co-writing the screenplay for the horror film Antlers and writing a couple episodes of the M. Night Shyamalan-produced thriller series Servant – on board to write and executive produce.

Published in 2015 and notably praised by horror master Clive Barker, Nick Cutter‘s underwater horror novel “The Deep” is getting a series adaptation at Amazon, Deadline reports.
C. Henry Chaisson is writing the series for Amazon Studios.
Clive Barker called the novel “utterly terrifying.”
“Set in the near future, The Deep centers on a research station at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, where a miraculous discovery signals a new hope for humanity – but secrets unearthed on the ocean floor may hold devastating consequences for the world above.”
The book’s official synopsis reveals more about the storyline…
“A strange plague called the ‘Gets is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget—small things at first, like where they left their keys, then the not-so-small things, like how to drive or the letters of the alphabet. Their bodies forget how to function involuntarily. There is no cure.

A marriage of police procedural and Lovecraftian horror, Rodrigo Gudiño and Ian Weir’s take on Nick Cutter’s popular genre novel is treading familiar territory for the Fantasia international Film Festival but manages to acquit itself with some distinction thanks to the groundedness and specificity of its approach. It begins when a spectacularly mangled body floats down the Porcupine river in a canoe, and ends in a place which is predictable yet nonetheless retains its sinister quality.
Allan Hawco plays police chief John Hawkins, who is just one week away from moving down south to take up a new job – the very worst time to happen upon a case like this. “This is Jake’s kind of case,” says an officer at the scene of the discovery, referring to Jacob Redgrave (Wesley French). As the jealous former boyfriend of Meg (Emily Alatalo), the woman whom John is on the verge of.

Raven Banner Entertainment announced it has completed production on Rue Morgue Magazine founder Rodrigo Gudiño’s “The Breach,” marking a reunion with former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, who serves as the film’s executive producer and co-producer of the score.
