On Thursday, DJ Snake launched the music video for his new song “Patience,” a personal project with a

a message of advocacy on the plight of migrants starring “Lupin’s” Omar Sy.

The track is a reimagining of West African musical duo Amadou & Mariam’s celebrated 2008 song “Sabali.”

“I used to listen to it on repeat,” DJ Snake told Variety via email. “One day, I played a loop from an edit I had been working on for my team, and everyone felt the same thing: this was something special. That moment sparked the beginning of ‘Patience.’

“But I didn’t want to just release a song,” he added. “I felt the urge to give it depth and purpose. The migrant crisis is often reduced to numbers and headlines, but behind it are stories of hope, loss and courage.”

It’s finally official, and this is better news than initially reported: the French hit title Lupin will be returning for a full fourth season. Production is now fully underway in Paris for the new season, which will consist of eight brand-new episodes. Here’s what was just revealed.

A fourth season has been long overdue for announcement, having been rumored for at least a couple of years now, but has heated up considerably this year. A few months back, we reported that Netflix had given Lupin a renewal but was cautious about what form the series would take. Given Omar Sy’s high demand, there were suggestions he’d only be returning for a special or movie of some description. Indeed, the actor spoke on a French radio station, suggesting it may be something other than a series announcement when directly asked about a fourth season.

Let’s face it: Family life and being members of an elite assassination squad just don’t mix.

It’s hopefully a problem to which few readers can relate, but it afflicts the central characters of Joe Carnahan’s new action film, which quietly snuck into theaters without advance screenings. Kerry Washington and Omar Sy play Kyrah and Issac, who used to be members of the titular organization until they made the mistake of falling in love and having a baby. They’ve since gone rogue, but in a modern manner: Issac stays home and cares for their young son Ky (Jahleel Kamara, adorable), while Kyrah remains in the field to eliminate the many assassins who’ve been assigned to kill them for their transgression. As Issac explains to his son, he and Kyrah used to be bad guys, doing “God’s dirty work” around the globe before they realized...

Rule number one of running a secret, dangerous special forces group? Don’t fall in love with a coworker. Of course, that seems to be the easiest rule to break.

And that’s exactly what Kerry Washington and Omar Sy do in “Shadow Force,” their new film directed by Joe Carnahan. In it, they play two operatives who led an organization known as the Shadow Force, but when they fell in love and had a kid, they went into hiding.

The movie Jake Schreier directed movie will cross the century mark today stateside in a weekend that’s littered with a bunch of single digit million openers. Summer competition doesn’t start until next weekend when New Line’s Final Destination: Bloodlines debuts with $30M-$40M. Thunderbolts* will have all the Imax and PLFs this weekend.

At the outset, Shadow Force positions itself as a portrait of exile and allegiance: ex‑shadow operatives turned family on the run (one sentence logline). It wears the trappings of a high‑stakes spy thriller—gunmetal skies, clandestine radio chatter—yet pulses with the quiet anxieties of domestic drama.

Joe Carnahan—whose résumé boasts Smokin’ Aces and Boss Level—returns to familiar territory, trading gritty grain and blown‑out hues for a muted palette that feels less “artistic choice” than “entirely color‑blind” (an occasional downside of modern streaming aesthetics given theatrical release). Kerry Washington anchors the film as Kyrah, a mother driven by equal parts ferocity and guilt; Omar Sy’s Isaac pairs paternal warmth with calibrated lethality; and Mark Strong’s Jack Cinder looms as a cynical patriarch of bureaucracy and bullets.

Review: Joe Carnahan‘s name really used to mean something in the action space. And I’d argue that he still does to some extent (with a ton of anticipation for his recently wrapped Affleck/Damon flick Rip). And I love that Kerry Washington is getting into the world of guns and mayhem. Sadly, their latest film, Shadow Force, fails to get me excited for either’s output in the genre, as it’s a pale retread of better films.

I was shocked by how much of Shadow Force consists of characters simply talking. When the whole plot is “former shadow ops are hunted down by their former team/employer” you expect a lot more action.

When a now-defunct celebrity couple attempted to make like Nick and Nora Charles meets “Mission: Impossible” in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” two decades ago, the high-concept, high-budget results were a mixed bag — which didn’t stop them from being imitated ever since. The latest duo to step into similar matching marital bulletproof vests is Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, playing globetrotting “elite special operators” now hiding from their former colleagues in “Shadow Force.”

It takes a certain esprit to pull off this kind of bombastic yet larky star vehicle. Joe Carnahan’s film provides passable diversion for a couple hours, but the fun to be had is limited by uninspired action staging, less-than-sparkling dialogue and a maudlin streak of the “It’s about family!!” type. Lionsgate’s theatrical release looks likelier to find its primary audience once it reaches home formats.

If you know anything about Shadow Force, you’ll probably only know the badly over-photoshopped faces of Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, the corny font, and the basic design of the poster at your local movie theater. It seems like the type of film you can easily skip because if you’ve seen one terrible action flick, you’ve seen them all. For Shadow Force, think again. What lies underneath the cheap marketing is a surprisingly fun, exciting action flick with strong performances and a nice pace.

Joe Carnahan has made a career out of ridiculous action flicks. Boss Level was a surprising standout in a deeply bland and frenetic library. Between this and the Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Steven Yeun starrer Rip that releases later this year on Netflix, Carnahan’s career is looking up.

Inspired by the infamous Chevaline killings, the show will follow the cold case that captivated the world when on Sep. 5, 2012, a British-Iraqi engineer, his wife, her mother, and a French cyclist were shot dead on a scenic road near Lake Annecy in France. Two young girls, aged 4 and 7, survived, unnoticed by first responders for hours.

The event sparked a vast investigation spanning multiple countries, including France, the U.K., Spain, Israel, Switzerland, and Iraq, involving hundreds of investigators and nearly a thousand witnesses. But the unresolved mystery returned to the spotlight last summer when French authorities reopened the investigation, further fueling public and media speculation.

Carrousel, the production and financing company founded by Louis Leterrier, Omar Sy, and Thomas Benski, joins Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch and Bob Cooper’s Landscape in bringing the drama to the screen.

So what exactly did that asterisk mean after all in the Thunderbolts* title? Today, Marvel finally answered that question on its social media handles as well as in top market outdoor ads.

That asterisk denotes the movie’s sub-title *The New Avengers which this ragtag group of Winter Soldier, Ghost, John Walker, Alexei Shostakov and Yelena Belova represents. They’re all expected to segue to Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Doomsday which will fire off next summer, May 1, 2026.

We hear from Disney that the studio didn’t technically re-title Thunderbolts* (that would be crazy), rather just spelled out that asterisk.

The last-minute marketing stunt comes in the wake of Thunderbolts* opening to $74M (instead of the reported $76M) after an estimated $18M Sunday, -27% from Saturday’s $24.5M. Exclusive: Angels Studios has set a limited theatrical release on Dec. 25 with January expansion for Brandt Andersen’s feature drama The Strangers’ Case.

The title, which made its world premiere at the 2024 Berlinale, was curated by the studio’s Angel Guild of 1.1M members.

Inspired by Andersen’s Oscar-shortlisted 2020 short film Refugee (2020), The Strangers’ Case unfolds through a Shakespearean lens, drawing its title from a poignant speech in Sir Thomas More defending displaced peoples. Set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War, the film follows a pediatric surgeon, Amira (Yasmine Al Massri), and her daughter, whose lives intertwine with five families across four continents in a chain reaction of tragedy, resilience, and hope. The ensemble cast includes Omar Sy, Yahya Mahayni, Ziad Bakri, Constantine Markoulakis, and Jason Beghe.

The Strangers’ Case won the Amnesty International Film Award. Andersen, who wrote and directed the movie, is also a seasoned producer and activist who has worked extensively with refugees in Syria, Jordan, and beyond. The movie features Syrian extras who have faced the Aegean crossing depicted in the story. To date, the film has received over 50 Festival awards.

“Stories that amplify light like The Strangers’ Case are for global mainstream audiences,” said Jared Geesey, Chief Distribution Officer at Angel. “Brandt Andersen’s vision to inspire compassion and understanding resonated with the Angel Guild, and we’re thrilled to bring this masterpiece to our audience.”
