Image
On Thursday, DJ Snake launched the music video for his new song “Patience,” a personal project with a

a message of advocacy on the plight of migrants starring “Lupin’s” Omar Sy.

The track is a reimagining of West African musical duo Amadou & Mariam’s celebrated 2008 song “Sabali.”

“I used to listen to it on repeat,” DJ Snake told Variety via email. “One day, I played a loop from an edit I had been working on for my team, and everyone felt the same thing: this was something special. That moment sparked the beginning of ‘Patience.’

“But I didn’t want to just release a song,” he added. “I felt the urge to give it depth and purpose. The migrant crisis is often reduced to numbers and headlines, but behind it are stories of hope, loss and courage.”

Besides the music video, “Patience” also spawned a short film shot in...

Cannes Day 3: Jury President Juliette Binoche Calls Out Hollywood’s ‘Silence’ on Gaza
Image
The third day of Cannes was noticeably sleepier, but what could compete with Tom Cruise and the cast and crew of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” storming the Croisette?

Broken silence

On the first day of the Cannes Film Festival, a letter was published condemning the silence of the Hollywood film industry over Israel’s military action in Gaza. Now, more A-listers have added their names to the list, including Joaquin Phoenix (whose “Eddington” premieres at the festival Friday), jury president Juliette Binoche, Riz Ahmed, Jim Jarmusch, Michael Moore and Guillermo del Toro, whose long-awaited take on “Frankenstein” opens later this year.

“Since the terrible massacres of 7 October 2023, no foreign journalist has been authorised to enter the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army is targeting civilians. More than 200 journalists have been deliberately killed. Writers, filmmakers and artists are being brutally murdered,” the letter stated.

What spurred the letter, specifically, was...

‘Simply Black’ Filmmaker Jean-Pascal Zadi Aims To Break Down More Barriers: “Being Black And Living In France Has Marked Me Deeply”
Image
When Julia Roberts attended the French Césars this March, Jean-Pascal Zadi was given the task of introducing the Erin Brockovich Oscar-winning actress.

The comic actor and director had Roberts in fits as he drew comparisons between their big toothy smiles and explained she could apply for political asylum if she were feeling the heat back home, suggesting she could get tips from actor Abou Sangaré, who was sitting a few seats behind.

Guinea-born Sangaré, who won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard Best Actor prize in 2024 for his performance as an undocumented migrant in Souleymane’s Story and would be feted with Best Male Revelation that evening, had just escaped deportation from France after securing a work permit in January.

The tone of the humor was typical of Zadi, who four years previously also won Best Male Revelation for Simply Black, his riotously, impolitically correct comedy tackling the experiences of Black people in France.

Colombia Takes Center Stage at Cannes, led by Simón Mesa Soto’s ‘A Poet’ in Un Certain Regard
Image
Colombia has a robust presence in Cannes this year, starting with Un Certain Regard entry “A Poet” (“Un Poeta”) by Simón Mesa Soto, whose career trajectory has been linked to Cannes thus far.

He premiered his debut feature “Amparo” at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2021. Prior to that, Mesa Soto, who studied Audiovisual Communications at the University of Antioquia in Colombia and later pursued a Master’s degree at the London Film School, won the 2014 Cannes short film Palme d’Or with his thesis short film, “Leidi,” while his next short film, “Mother,” was selected to compete in Cannes two years later.

“A Poet” follows Oscar Restrepo (played by non-pro Ubeimar Rios), whose devotion to poetry has earned him little more than obscurity. Now aging and erratic, he embodies the archetype of the forgotten poet, lost in the shadows. But when he crosses paths with Yurlady (non-pro Rebeca Andrade), a talented teenager from humble origins,...

Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Juliette Binoche, Riz Ahmed and Guillermo del Toro Among Additional Names to Sign Open Letter Condemning Industry Silence Over Gaza (Exclusive)
Image
Joaquin Phoenix, Juliette Binoche, Pedro Pascal, Riz Ahmed and Guillermo del Toro are among a group of figures to have added their names to a letter condemning the film industry for its “silence” over the ongoing and deadly impact of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The letter, published on the first day of Cannes and initially signed by more than 370 actors and filmmakers, also condemned Israel’s killing of Fatma Hassona, the protagonist of festival-bound doc “Put Your Soul in Your Hand and Walk.”

The new signatories also includes the likes of Rooney Mara, Jim Jarmusch, Omar Sy, Peter Straughan, Camille Cottin, Michael Moore, Boots Riley and Alice Rohrwacher.

The letter urged cinema — which it said was a “breeding ground for socially committed works” — to use its art form to “draw lessons from history, to make films that are committed” and to be “present to protect oppressed voices.”

‘Shadow Force’ Splits Opinion With Two Hugely Contrasting Rotten Tomatoes Ratings
Image
Written and directed by Joe Carnahan, the brand-new action drama Shadow Force has officially opened in theaters, although it was unable to break the top 5 in its opening weekend box office ranking. From 2,170 theaters, the movie managed just $2.1 million from its debut weekend, a considerable underachievement for a film boasting a reported $60 million budget. Unable to make an impact despite featuring a strong, eye-catching ensemble cast that includes the likes of Kerry Washington, Lupin star Omar Sy, The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy's Mark Strong, Academy Award winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Cliff "Method Man" Smith, and others, it seems that the poor beginning to financial life isn't reflected by the movie's audience reception.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Shadow Force is the owner of an impressive 81% audience rating, suggesting a movie well worth the time, energy, and money of theatergoers. Alas, it seems this action flick is the latest in...

It’s finally official, and this is better news than initially reported: the French hit title Lupin will be returning for a full fourth season. Production is now fully underway in Paris for the new season, which will consist of eight brand-new episodes. Here’s what was just revealed.

A fourth season has been long overdue for announcement, having been rumored for at least a couple of years now, but has heated up considerably this year. A few months back, we reported that Netflix had given Lupin a renewal but was cautious about what form the series would take. Given Omar Sy’s high demand, there were suggestions he’d only be returning for a special or movie of some description. Indeed, the actor spoke on a French radio station, suggesting it may be something other than a series announcement when directly asked about a fourth season.

Ticket sales for Disney's Marvel movie dropped just 55 percent from its $74 million opening, buoyed by its A-minus CinemaScore and glowing reviews. This is a better hold than several previous Marvel films, including Captain America: Brave New World (down 68 percent), 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (down 70 percent), The Marvels (down 78 percent), and 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder (down 67 percent), signaling a positive shift for the franchise.

In second place, Sinners held strong with $21.1 million, with the Warner Bros. vampire flick's domestic tally soaring past $200 million and nearing $300 million worldwide. A Minecraft Movie followed in third with $8 million in its sixth weekend; the video game-based movie, also from Warner Bros., has now grossed $409 million in North America as it inches closer to $1 billion globally. ‘Thunderbolts’ Holds Lead as ‘Sinners’ Reaches $200M Domestic*
Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, and Florence Pugh in Thunderbolts* (2025)
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts leads the domestic box office for a second weekend. The film brought in an estimated $9 million on Friday, and current projections place its weekend total above $130 million in North America.

The Friday-to-Friday decline stands near 53%. Among 36 MCU releases, that rate ranks among the ten lowest second-weekend drops. This result places Thunderbolts between Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals in terms of eight-day domestic earnings. The film remains available in IMAX and premium formats, which continue to drive ticket sales.

The budget for Thunderbolts is estimated at $180 million, with promotional expenses nearing $100 million. It currently faces no new wide-release competition until next week, when the horror sequel Final Destination: Bloodlines is set to open.

Internationally, the Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan-led ensemble is expected to surpass $200 million by Sunday. The film’s hold is tracking better than that of Captain America: Brave New World,...

Box Office: ‘Thunderbolts*’ on Top Again in Second Weekend, ‘Sinners’ Crossing $200 Million Domestic
Image
“Thunderbolts*” will enjoy another weekend atop domestic box office charts, with no new major wide release until next week’s horror sequel “Final Destination: Bloodlines.”

Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” added another $9 million on Friday. Disney’s superhero ensemble feature, still playing Imax and premium large-format auditoriums, has now crossed $100 million in North America and will look to push north of $130 million by the end of the weekend.

That would mark about a 53% fall from the “Thunderbolts*” opening weekend. Indeed, much stronger reviews and positive fan reception did indicate this Marvel Cinematic Universe entry would possess more staying power than its predecessor, “Captain America: Brave New World,” which crumbled more than 68% in its sophomore frame back in February. To compare it to other recent MCU entries centered on lesser-known heroes, “Thunderbolts*” is pacing between “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($119 million through eight days) and “Eternals” ($99 million through eight days).

If projections hold,...

'Shadow Force' Star Kerry Washington Explains Why the Action Movie Is Perfect for Mother's Day
Image
Just in time for Mommy Appreciation Day, Kerry Washington has just the movie for you. It has romance, it has family values... and it even has guns blazing. No, not figuratively. Fresh off her leading turn in Tyler Perry's The Six Triple Eight for Netflix, the Emmy-winning actress is back in action for another film where she means business. This time around, however, it's a little more fun, despite the hard R-rated violence and tense drama surrounding her embattled character's perpetual drive to protect her son.

From Lionsgate, Shadow Force sees Washington starring opposite the reliably appealing Omar Sy (Lupin). They play a pair of elite international assassins on the run from their former employer who has placed a $25 million bounty on their heads for ditching their organization to start a family. What a nerve. MovieWeb recently caught up with Washington to learn more about her exciting new action...

‘Shadow Force’ Review: Kerry Washington and Omar Sy Try, in Vain, to Keep Spy Flick Afloat
Image
Let’s face it: Family life and being members of an elite assassination squad just don’t mix.

It’s hopefully a problem to which few readers can relate, but it afflicts the central characters of Joe Carnahan’s new action film, which quietly snuck into theaters without advance screenings. Kerry Washington and Omar Sy play Kyrah and Issac, who used to be members of the titular organization until they made the mistake of falling in love and having a baby. They’ve since gone rogue, but in a modern manner: Issac stays home and cares for their young son Ky (Jahleel Kamara, adorable), while Kyrah remains in the field to eliminate the many assassins who’ve been assigned to kill them for their transgression. As Issac explains to his son, he and Kyrah used to be bad guys, doing “God’s dirty work” around the globe before they realized...

Antiheroes are blowing up the box office again as Marvel Studios‘ Thunderbolts* looks to punch its way to $100M on Friday with an estimated $30M second weekend take at the box office. Analysts expect Bloodlines to make a $30M-$40M killing at the box office during its debut.

Elsewhere, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners continues to sink its teeth into wallets by ending its third week with $46.6M, bringing its domestic total to $193.3M, with $247M+ worldwide. Shadow Force Review: A Family on the Run
Image
At the outset, Shadow Force positions itself as a portrait of exile and allegiance: ex‑shadow operatives turned family on the run (one sentence logline). It wears the trappings of a high‑stakes spy thriller—gunmetal skies, clandestine radio chatter—yet pulses with the quiet anxieties of domestic drama.

Joe Carnahan—whose résumé boasts Smokin’ Aces and Boss Level—returns to familiar territory, trading gritty grain and blown‑out hues for a muted palette that feels less “artistic choice” than “entirely color‑blind” (an occasional downside of modern streaming aesthetics given theatrical release). Kerry Washington anchors the film as Kyrah, a mother driven by equal parts ferocity and guilt; Omar Sy’s Isaac pairs paternal warmth with calibrated lethality; and Mark Strong’s Jack Cinder looms as a cynical patriarch of bureaucracy and bullets.

The opening tableau is deceptively serene: Isaac teaching five‑year‑old Ky to hum Lionel Richie...

Shadow Force Review: Carnahan’s Latest is a Dud
Image
Plot: An estranged couple with a bounty on their heads must go on the run with their son to avoid their former employer, a unit of shadow ops that has been sent to kill them.

Review: Joe Carnahan‘s name really used to mean something in the action space. And I’d argue that he still does to some extent (with a ton of anticipation for his recently wrapped Affleck/Damon flick Rip). And I love that Kerry Washington is getting into the world of guns and mayhem. Sadly, their latest film, Shadow Force, fails to get me excited for either’s output in the genre, as it’s a pale retread of better films.

I was shocked by how much of Shadow Force consists of characters simply talking. When the whole plot is “former shadow ops are hunted down by their former team/employer” you expect a lot more action.

‘Shadow Force’ Review: Two Spies Get Dragged From the Cold in Middling Action Opus
Image
When a now-defunct celebrity couple attempted to make like Nick and Nora Charles meets “Mission: Impossible” in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” two decades ago, the high-concept, high-budget results were a mixed bag — which didn’t stop them from being imitated ever since. The latest duo to step into similar matching marital bulletproof vests is Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, playing globetrotting “elite special operators” now hiding from their former colleagues in “Shadow Force.”

It takes a certain esprit to pull off this kind of bombastic yet larky star vehicle. Joe Carnahan’s film provides passable diversion for a couple hours, but the fun to be had is limited by uninspired action staging, less-than-sparkling dialogue and a maudlin streak of the “It’s about family!!” type. Lionsgate’s theatrical release looks likelier to find its primary audience once it reaches home formats.

Kyrah (Washington) and Isaac (Sy) are a couple who met on the job.

Shadow Force Review — Omar Sy and Kerry Washington Excel in Surprising Action Thriller
Image
If you know anything about Shadow Force, you’ll probably only know the badly over-photoshopped faces of Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, the corny font, and the basic design of the poster at your local movie theater. It seems like the type of film you can easily skip because if you’ve seen one terrible action flick, you’ve seen them all. For Shadow Force, think again. What lies underneath the cheap marketing is a surprisingly fun, exciting action flick with strong performances and a nice pace.

Shadow Force Review

Joe Carnahan has made a career out of ridiculous action flicks. Boss Level was a surprising standout in a deeply bland and frenetic library. Between this and the Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Steven Yeun starrer Rip that releases later this year on Netflix, Carnahan’s career is looking up.

Shadow Force review – Kerry Washington overacts in low-rent action slop
Joe Carnahan
Director Joe Carnahan’s limply made thriller about an estranged couple of elite operatives is a lazy grab bag of exhaustingly familiar cliches

Maybe the new action movie Shadow Force is just deserts for film fans who complain when seemingly surefire big-screen hits such as Another Simple Favor debut as streaming-only releases. Shadow Force has a premise almost comically adherent to the fixations of so many big-budget streaming movies: elite operatives Kyrah (Kerry Washington) and Isaac (Omar Sy) must fight for their lives and their family when they defy the rules of their, yes, shadowy employers by falling in love and having a child. It shares familiar components including charismatic stars, spy action, domestic strife and semi-slapstick violence with projects such as Back in Action (Netflix), Role Play (Prime Video) and Ghosted (Apple TV+), among others. With director Joe Carnahan, it even has a once edgy stylist who used to deal in gritty grain,...

Benedict Cumberbatch to Executive Produce ‘The Annecy Murders,’ Based on Real-Life Cold Case
Image
Benedict Cumberbatch will executive produce a new six-part limited series, based on true events, called The Annecy Murders.

Inspired by the infamous Chevaline killings, the show will follow the cold case that captivated the world when on Sep. 5, 2012, a British-Iraqi engineer, his wife, her mother, and a French cyclist were shot dead on a scenic road near Lake Annecy in France. Two young girls, aged 4 and 7, survived, unnoticed by first responders for hours.

The event sparked a vast investigation spanning multiple countries, including France, the U.K., Spain, Israel, Switzerland, and Iraq, involving hundreds of investigators and nearly a thousand witnesses. But the unresolved mystery returned to the spotlight last summer when French authorities reopened the investigation, further fueling public and media speculation.

Carrousel, the production and financing company founded by Louis Leterrier, Omar Sy, and Thomas Benski, joins Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch and Bob Cooper’s Landscape in bringing the drama to the screen.

Image
Carrousel Studios, SunnyMarch and Landscape are joining forces on six-part psychological thriller The Annecy Murders, inspired by the infamous Chevaline killings in the French Alps, a cold case that continues to draw international attention more than a decade after the crime.

The brutal attack on September 5, 2012 on a quiet, scenic road near Lake Annecy left four dead, including a British Iraqi engineer, his wife, her mother, and a French cyclist. The engineer’s two young daughters miraculously survived.

The killings sparked an investigation spanning multiple countries – including France, the UK, Spain, Israel, Switzerland, and Iraq – involving hundreds of investigators and nearly a thousand witnesses. Theories ranged from familial disputes and lone psychopaths to international espionage and money laundering involving Mossad and Saddam Hussein.

‘Thunderbolts*’ Unveils Title Asterisk In Late Marketing Stunt; U.S. Box Office Opening At $74M
Image
So what exactly did that asterisk mean after all in the Thunderbolts* title? Today, Marvel finally answered that question on its social media handles as well as in top market outdoor ads.

That asterisk denotes the movie’s sub-title *The New Avengers which this ragtag group of Winter Soldier, Ghost, John Walker, Alexei Shostakov and Yelena Belova represents. They’re all expected to segue to Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Doomsday which will fire off next summer, May 1, 2026.

We hear from Disney that the studio didn’t technically re-title Thunderbolts* (that would be crazy), rather just spelled out that asterisk.

The last-minute marketing stunt comes in the wake of Thunderbolts* opening to $74M (instead of the reported $76M) after an estimated $18M Sunday, -27% from Saturday’s $24.5M. Disney will be reporting their official figure soon. The Jake Schreier directed movie had great exits with an A- CinemaScore, 94% Rotten Tomatoes...

Angel Studios Dates Syrian Refugee Crisis Drama ‘The Strangers’ Case’ For Year End
Image
Exclusive: Angels Studios has set a limited theatrical release on Dec. 25 with January expansion for Brandt Andersen’s feature drama The Strangers’ Case.

The title, which made its world premiere at the 2024 Berlinale, was curated by the studio’s Angel Guild of 1.1M members.

Inspired by Andersen’s Oscar-shortlisted 2020 short film Refugee (2020), The Strangers’ Case unfolds through a Shakespearean lens, drawing its title from a poignant speech in Sir Thomas More defending displaced peoples. Set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War, the film follows a pediatric surgeon, Amira (Yasmine Al Massri), and her daughter, whose lives intertwine with five families across four continents in a chain reaction of tragedy, resilience, and hope. The ensemble cast includes Omar Sy, Yahya Mahayni, Ziad Bakri, Constantine Markoulakis, and Jason Beghe.

The Strangers’ Case won the Amnesty International Film Award. Andersen, who wrote and directed the movie, is also a seasoned producer and activist who has worked extensively with refugees in Syria, Jordan, and beyond. The movie features Syrian extras who have faced the Aegean crossing depicted in the story. To date, the film has received over 50 Festival awards.

“Stories that amplify light like The Strangers’ Case are for global mainstream audiences,” said Jared Geesey, Chief Distribution Officer at Angel. “Brandt Andersen’s vision to inspire compassion and understanding resonated with the Angel Guild, and we’re thrilled to bring this masterpiece to our audience.”

“I am honored and grateful to partner with Angel to share The Strangers’ Case with a global audience,” said Andersen in a statement. “I cannot wait for everyone to see the hard work of this amazing cast and crew on the big screen. This film is deeply personal, and I believe its message of shared humanity is more important now than ever.”

The Angel Guild counts a community of over 1.1M members from more than 170 countries who cleared The Strangers’ Case for distribution.
