CNN Hires Rahm Emanuel
Image
Rahm Emanuel, who last served as ambassador to Japan in Joe Biden’s administration, has found a media gig at CNN.

The veteran politician will join the cable news outlet as senior political and global affairs commentator, the network said on Thursday. Emanuel, who grew his national stature as White House chief of staff to President Obama, served as mayor of Chicago from 2011 to 2019.

The hire adds another staunch Democrat voice on global affairs to a pundit and anchor roster that is retooling in the second Trump administration. The official, the brother of Endeavor mogul Ari Emanuel, stepped down from the ambassadorship on January 14 a week ahead of the presidential transition.

Emanuel has already been appearing on CNN’s programming recently, including with Cristiane Amanpour in December and on State of the Union with Dana Bash after wrapping his diplomatic role in Tokyo. He’s also been keeping busy by writing Washington Post opinion columns,...

Former NPR host and CNN podcast host Audie Cornish will take over CNN This Morning in the 6 a.m. time slot. He will now host a show at 10 a.m. with Pamela Brown, as opposed to the early evening spot he held on CNN for 20 years. At 5 a.m., CNN correspondent Rahel Solomon...

CNN Shakeup: Jake Tapper, Wolf Blitzer Change Times, Jim Acosta Removed
Image
CNN made several changes to its lineup on Thursday, including giving longtime anchor Jake Tapper a new time slot and removing Jim Acosta from his morning show. Network veteran Wolf Blitzer is also being moved from broadcasting in the evening to the mornings as part of CNN’s shake up.

Tapper’s show “The Lead” is being moved an hour later, and will now air from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Et. each weekday. Acosta, who has had many memorable squabbles with President Donald Trump, will no longer host “CNN Newsroom” from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. during the week.

That time will now occupied by “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown,” which will air from 10:00 a.m. to noon Et. Blitzer had been broadcasting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Et each night. Kasie Hunt is also getting a...

Jake Tapper, Wolf Blitzer, Audie Cornish Get New Timeslots as CNN Shakes Up TV Lineup
Image
CNN is getting a revamped lineup, with a number of familiar faces moving to new roles or time periods. Eric Sherling, CNN’s executive vp of programming, announced the changes in a memo to CNN staff Thursday.

The new lineup was unveiled just hours after CNN CEO Mark Thompson outlined job cuts and a digital-first strategy for the venerable cable news channel.

Among the changes: The Lead anchor Jake Tapper will move to 5-7 p.m., filling a critical early primetime period for news; Kasie Hunt will host The Arena at 4 p.m.; Audie Cornish will join CNN This Morning at 6 a.m.; Rahel Solomon will host 5 Things at 5 a.m.; and Wolf Blitzer and Pamala Brown will move to the 10 a.m. timeslot with a new version of The Situation Room.

CNN Shakes Up TV Lineup With New Duties for Jake Tapper, Kasie Hunt, Wolf Blitzer, Audie Cornish, Rahel Solomon
Image
CNN is shaking up its TV schedule yet again as the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet grapples with significant declines in audience and a need to control costs in an era when more viewers are migrating to streaming media.

Under a series of changes unveiled Thursday, Audie Cornish, the former NPR host will take over the 6 a.m. “CNN This Morning,” while Rahel Solomon will lead a new 5 a.m. concept called “5 Things.” Jake Tapper’s late-day program will move to a two hour slot between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., setting up audiences for the primetime lineup, and Kasie Hunt will move from mornings to a 4 p.m. program called “The Arena.”

Wolf Blitzer will move out of the early evening slot he had held for years, paired instead with Pamela Brown at 10 a.m. CNN did not specify a new role for Jim Acosta, the no-nonsense anchor who has...

DirecTV Takes Issue With New CNN Streaming Service
Image
At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.

Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”

The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.

“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

CNN Max Launches With Schedule That Mirrors Much Of Its Linear Lineup
Image
CNN ventured back into streaming on Wednesday with the launch of CNN Max, a service that diverges from its past efforts in the way that it mirrors so much of the schedule of the linear network.

Primetime shows like Erin Burnett OutFront, Anderson Cooper 360 and The Source With Kaitlan Collins, as well as morning programming including Early Start with Kasie Hunt and CNN This Morning are on the scheduled unveiled on Wednesday. Other shows come from CNN International, including State of the Race with Kasie Hunt, which is debuting on Wednesday as well, and One World, with Bianna Golodryga joining Zain Asher as anchor. Amanpour also is part of the early afternoon schedule.

The CNN hub also features original programming, including Jim Sciutto anchor CNN Newsroom, with Rahel Solomon, Jim Acosta, Amara Walker and Fredricka Whitfield also set to lead coverage during certain dayparts.

The streaming service, currently in Beta form,...

CNN’s New Streaming Counterpart Features A Big Chunk of Linear Schedule
Image
CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.

CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.

The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

The CNN Max Dilemma: Streaming Launch Could Leave CNN Cable Business Behind
Image
As CNN races to catch up with the streaming world, its strategy in launching CNN Max — more than a year after the failure of CNN+ — will be a hat trick: offer news on its main subscription platform while preserving as much of its fast-declining linear audience as possible.

The pressing need to get CNN into the streaming space is obvious. Competitors like Fox News have already begun building an audience on their own streaming services. And adding news to the Max platform gives Warner Bros. Discovery a significant leg up over competitors like Netflix and Disney+, which currently do not carry live news at all.

“There is only one CNN and a significant number of U.S. homes have cut the cord. So if you don’t have a robust streaming solution, you can’t reach them,” Dave Morgan, CEO of cross-channel TV advertising firm Simulmedia, told TheWrap.

“Adding CNN...

CNN to Launch 24/7 News Streaming Service on Max
CNN Newsroom (1989)
The new Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform Max announced Thursday the addition of CNN Max, a 24/7 news service that will be free to subscribers.

The streaming news offering will launch Sept. 27, just over a year after the hastily aborted launch of CNN+. That project, which launched in May of 2022, was shut down three weeks later as the Warner Bros. merger with Discovery was freshly underway.

“CNN Max will leverage CNN’s reporting excellence, global newsgathering, and live programming from CNN US, CNN International, and feature original programming built specifically for Max,” the company said in a Thursday release. “CNN Max will be a new seven-day-a-week/24-hour service and be part of an open beta for news that will enable experimentation with product features, content offerings and original storytelling, all with the input and feedback from the Max community.”

The service will feature known CNN anchors and new programming built specifically for the streaming platform.

Max to Launch CNN Max News Streaming Service
Image
Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streamer is set to add 24/7 news programming to its offering with the addition of CNN Max starting Sept. 27.

The breaking news addition, launching with an open beta at no cost to subscribers, comes after the short-lived CNN+ stand-alone subscription service was shuttered one month after its launch, which forced the studio to rethink its live breaking news strategy online.

CNN Max will add breaking news to the Hollywood studio’s entertainment streaming service as it kicks off with open beta, at no extra charge to subscribers.

CNN Max, a rebrand of the CNN originals hub, will include programming specifically built for the Max streaming audience, like CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker and Fredricka Whitfield and CNN Newsroom with Jim Sciutto. Sciutto will lead breaking news coverage on CNN Max in the afternoons.

CNN Max will also offer series like Amanpour, Anderson Cooper 360,...

Kaitlan Collins
CNN Hub With Live Stream And New Programming To Launch On Max
Kaitlan Collins
CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.

A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.

Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

Live-Streamed CNN Channel With New Shows Set to Debut on Max
Image
You might call it CNN Headline News — for the streaming era.

Warner Bros. Discovery plans to unveil a 24/7 live-streamed news service called “CNN Max” on September 27, and indicated the outlet would focus initially on breaking news. Anchors including Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker, Fredricka Whitfield and Jim Sciutto have been given assignments, with Sciutto set to lead breaking news in the afternoons. Bianna Golodryga and Christiane Amanpour could also have roles, according to a person familiar with the situation.

CNN has fallen far behind its rivals when it comes to streaming, with Warner scuttling a nascent subscription-based streaming outlet, CNN+, last year. As the company recalibrated CNN’s strategy, however, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, ABC News and CBS News have all had opportunities to establish new programming for the broadband set, and to experiment while refining their brands in the space. CNN is in some ways starting to run...

CNN Taps Anchors for Original Streaming Shows on Max (Exclusive)
Image
CNN+ may not have worked, but perhaps CNN on Max will.

Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to launch new original programs from CNN that will stream on its Max streaming service, according to three people familiar with the matter. Jim Sciutto, Bianna Golodryga, Rahel Solomon and Christiane Amanpour are among the CNN journalists who have been tapped to take part in the effort, according to two of these people.

CNN and Max could make an announcement about the project as soon as Thursday, according to these people, and would likely provide greater detail. A spokeswoman for CNN declined to comment and a spokesman for Max declined to comment.

Warner Bros. Discovery scuttled the nascent CNN+ streaming service within days of taking over CNN’s corporate parent, once known as WarnerMedia, from AT&T in 2022. Now the company seems more eager to make CNN programming available to cord-cutters, perhaps realizing that the cable-news giant,...

Help Wanted at CNN: New Boss Must Manage Restless Journalists, Active Corporate CEO
Image
One of the most influential and alluring jobs in journalism just opened. Now the company trying to fill the position is waiting to see if anyone really wants it.

Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to move deliberately rather than quickly in its search for a new CEO for CNN. Executives are telling staffers and TV agents that it will likely take a few months to fill the role that Chris Licht held for one turbulent year. Licht, the TV news veteran and “Late Show With Stephen Colbert” showrunner, was ousted last week after spearheading a series of programming moves and talent decisions that kept headlines about CNN circulating more often than anything else produced by the newsroom. Licht’s final error was taking part in a profile The Atlantic published June 2 — 15,000 words detailing a “Meltdown at CNN.” Numerous statements from Licht in the story and his questionable judgment in allowing...
