Remember Green Day’s catchy tune, Nice Guys Finish Last? Well, if you need proof, just look at Tom Cruise striking out on a date in his prime! Who would’ve thought that the man who can bring enemies to their knees couldn’t get Heather Locklear to swoon?

Indeed, from rescuing his partner on-screen as Maverick in Top Gun or performing jaw-dropping stunts as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible, one would think that wooing a lady would be part and parcel of Cruise’s repertoire.

The 20 Greatest MTV Video Music Awards Performances of All Time
Image
This year marked the 40th anniversary of the first MTV Video Music Awards, a milestone that’s somewhat blunted by the realization that this isn’t your mother’s VMAs. The network handed over the reins to viewers beginning in 2006, letting them pick the winners in all of the main categories. And in recent years, the VMAs have moved even further away from the “video” designation of its name, doling out moonmen for Song of the Year and Song of the Summer.

One thing that hasn’t changed about the VMAs, however, is the opportunity for show-stopping performances, something MTV acknowledged this year with a new Most Iconic Performance category. The winner in that race, Katy Perry, was also bestowed with the semi-annual Video Vanguard award. From Perry flying through the air like a, uh, firework to Madonna rolling around in a wedding dress at the inaugural VMAs in 1984, we...

Jon Bon Jovi is a snowbird — the nickname given to people of a certain age who flee their northern homes during the winter months to areas with warmer climates.

It’s late April and the famous New Jersey native is in Palm Beach, Fla.

“My license still says the great state of New Jersey,” the Bon Jovi frontman tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I’m there when it’s not cold. But when it’s cold, these old bones are on the beach.”

The rocker, 62, is talking and thinking a lot about his age lately. While his Hulu docuseries, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” chronicles the iconic rock band’s rise to the top, the through line of the four episodes is the singer’s struggle to overcome vocal problems in time for the group’s 40th anniversary tour.

Jon Bon Jovi is apparently open to the idea of Richie Sambora returning to rock with Bon Jovi again over 11 years after he originally left the band in the middle of a tour. The thing is, whether he returns or not depends on one thing.

Jon Bon Jovi – Says Touring Is the Only Thing That Would Reunite the Band With Richie Sambora

Just so you know, there is no bad blood between Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, and though it’s been 11 years since the pair enjoyed a close working relationship, the rocker still believes the band may get to rock with Richie one more time.

Sambora was Bon Jovi’s main guitarist before he departed the band in 2013. Since that time, Sambora and the band’s frontman, Jon Bon Jovi, have had limited communication, even though it is said that there wasn’t any lingering hatred between the two.

What to watch this weekend April 26, 2024: TV awards contenders
Image
There was a time not so long ago when limited series were just that: limited. In a post-“Big Little Lies” existence, however, series are limited only until a network executive decides they’re not. For now, FX’s critically acclaimed “Shōgun,” a striking 10-episode historical epic about warring factions in Japan, remains a limited series, having this week reached the end of its source material, James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. The series finale, “A Dream of a Dream,” is now streaming on Hulu, and after picking up in the aftermath of Mariko’s (Anna Sawai) death, manages to complete its narrative arc in emotionally satisfying fashion.

Since its debut in late February, the endlessly compelling (and surprisingly funny) series has captivated viewers, reminding us of the thrills of event TV. Each episode was bigger than the one that came before it, right up until the end.

Shot Through The Heart: Jon Bon Jovi Opens Up About Hulu Docuseries ‘Thank You, Goodnight’
Image
Forty years after putting down the Power Station broom and picking up the microphone, Jon Bon Jovi is in an introspective mood.

The man who co-wrote iconic songs including “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Keep the Faith” is preparing for the release of Hulu’s four-part docuseries Thank You, Goodnight, directed by Gotham Chopra.

Initially planned as a career retrospective around the band’s 40th anniversary – Bon Jovi’s eponymous album was released on January 21, 1984 – the series added another element to the story, that of its lead singer’s health issues that have raised question marks about the band’s future.

Thank You, Goodnight, which premieres April 26, highlights the highs and lows of being in a band, the drugs and the difficulties of remaining successful and wanting to evolve but not wanting to alienate its audience, in addition to its leader’s health issues. It’s not a “VH1 puff piece,...

‘Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story’ Review: Hulu Rock Doc Is More Leisurely Victory Lap Than Deep Dive
Image
Here is an incomplete list of people who might really enjoy Hulu’s Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story: Longtime Bon Jovi fans, who know this story by heart but love it enough to want to hear it again. More recent converts, eager to fill in the gaps of their knowledge. Individuals who are deeply invested in Jon Bon Jovi as a person, and wondering how he’s been. Jon himself, presumably — though the frontman has stressed that he did not have final cut, director Gotham Chopra has assembled a portrait as reverent as any celebrity might reasonably hope for.

Everyone else — the casual listeners, the total newbies, the gossips and (at least in my case) the critics — can probably keep walking. Thank You, Goodnight is a perfectly nice retrospective, approachable and amiable and affectionate. But that’s not the same thing as saying it’s a particularly insightful one.

Bon Jovi Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Hulu Docuseries

Bon Jovi has fans in many countries around the world, but the band got its start in a small town in New Jersey in the early 1980s. The original band consisted of keyboardist David Bryan, vocalist and band namesake Jon Bon Jovi, drummer Tico Torres, bassist Alec John Such and guitarist Richie Sambora.

It wasn’t until they released their third album, Slippery When Wet, that they gained fame. The album included three top 10 singles, including their most popular song, “Livin’ on a Prayer.”

Jon Bon Jovi teases new unfiltered documentary
Image
Singer-songwriter Jon Bon Jovi has shared that his upcoming documentary will be a totally unfiltered production.

The new docu-series is titled ‘Thank You, Good Night: The Bon Jovi Story’, reports ‘Female First UK’.

The singer told Extra, “I didn’t want a puff piece if we were going to do a film of this magnitude”.

Bon Jovi said: “There’s no shields up on this project. Everybody showed warts and all.”

As per ‘Female First UK’, in 2022, Bon Jovi underwent vocal cord surgery, in a bid to help his voice to regain proper function. And the chart-topping icon was helped through the process by Bruce Springsteen, his long-time showbiz friend.

Bon Jovi shared, “(Bruce) is like a big brother throughout my vocal surgery journey. One of the real comforting voices of, ‘We got your back,...

The It's Always Sunny Bon Jovi Cameo That Never Came To Be
Image
There have been some truly incredible cameos on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" over the years, ranging from all of the gang's spouses to director Guillermo del Toro, who is nearly unrecognizable as Pappy McPoyle. Often, the cameos come about because the main cast knew someone — del Toro worked with star Charlie Day on "Pacific Rim," for example — but sometimes, they really try to reach beyond their circle of friends and acquaintances. Sometimes it works, while other times they're totally out of luck. The season 4 episode "Dennis Reynolds: An Erotic Life" is a perfect example of both, because there are some wonderful cameos and one that just sadly didn't work out.

In the episode, Dennis (Glenn Howerton) wants to publish his erotic memoirs, but Frank (Danny DeVito) and Mac (Rob McElhenney) point out that the stories inside are totally make-believe and could open them up to litigation -- for example,...
