No type of film has seen more repeated success this millennium than the comic book movie. Big-screen adaptations of Batman, Spider-Man, The Avengers and more are met with success time and time again. But there are plenty of popular films with comic book origins most people aren’t even aware of.
With “The Old Guard 2” now streaming on Netflix, here are 16 films you may not know are comic book adaptations.
“2 Guns”
Boom! Studios’ comic “2 Guns” by Steven Grant and Mateus Santolouco provided the basis for a Denzel Washington/Mark Wahlberg buddy cop movie of the same name. The film, directed by Baltasar Kormákur and written by Blake Masters, follows the two as a pair of undercover agents who are unknowingly attempting to take down the same drug lord. Jurassic World Rebirth takes inspiration from plenty of places – some more likely than others.
“The Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going ‘Beep-Beep!'”
The way he told it, Chuck Jones created Wile E Coyote and the Road Runner in the glow of nine commandments. Thou shalt not stray from the road; thou shalt buy all materials from the Acme Corporation, etcetera etcetera.
Decades later, confronted by Universal and Steven Spielberg’s need of a new Jurassic movie, veteran screenwriter David Koepp was feeling inspired. “I actually wrote a list of our nine commandments… inspired by Chuck Jones” he told The Playlist last year.
“I made a list of things that we had to abide by – one was the events of the previous six movies that cannot be contradicted or denied because I don’t like a retcon. Those are no fun. Two, humour is oxygen. Science must be real.

In March, Marvel Studios announced the Avengers: Doomsday cast in a lengthy reveal video that confirmed the surprise return of several actors from the original X-Men cast.
Following his return in The Marvels, Kelsey Grammer will reprise his role as Beast, and there's so far been nothing to indicate that the actors from the X-Men prequel movies (which began with 2011's X-Men: First Class) will join them. That's not overly surprising, especially as Kevin Feige got his start in Hollywood working on Bryan Singer's X-Men.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly about Superman, Hoult said he also saw the cast reveal video and quickly noticed that his version of Hank McCoy wasn't on the list.
"Kelsey was a great Beast," the actor said. "He was the Beast I saw when I was a kid, along with the other actors that they're bringing back, Patrick and Ian and James and all them.

Marisa Abela, one of the stars of acclaimed British drama Industry, has joined Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe in Highlander, Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s cult classic.
Chad Stahelski is on board to direct the feature, which hails from Amazon MGM’s United Artists banner and is slated to get a theatrical release.
The original Highlander, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. With the help of a swordsman named Ramirez, played by Sean Connery, the titular Highlander battles other immortals across the centuries, culminating in a modern battle in which, like the classic line of dialogue goes, “there can be only one.” The movie went back and forth from various time periods.
In the remake, Cavill is playing MacLeod while Crowe is Ramirez.

Daniel Craig was most recently seen in Queer, the A24 thriller directed by Luca Guadagnino, but one much older film from the star has returned to streaming glory years later. Craig stars alongside Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a 2011 psychological thriller following a journalist (Craig) who searches for a woman who has been missing for 40 years. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is streaming on Pluto TV in the United States, and it’s also charting in the top 10 in other countries such as Belarus and Slovenia. The film earned a “certified fresh” 86% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and even an 86% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It also grossed $232 million at the box office against a $90 million budget, meaning it exceeded its break-even point.

Spoilers ahead for all three seasons of "Squid Game."
"Squid Game" has come to a close — well, the first series, anyway — and anyone who's watched the show before the third and final season probably assumed that the ending would be a real bloodbath. True to form, it was. After pretty much all of our favorite season 2 players fell throughout season 3, including Cho Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon), Lee Myung-gi (Im Si-wan), Kim Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri), Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim), and Park Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun) — Players 120, 333, 222, 149, and 007, respectively — we're left to see what happens to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the series protagonist who's left protecting Jun-hee's newborn baby in the final game.
Gi-hun pretty unequivocally dies after fighting with Myung-gi, the baby's father, resulting in Myung-gi's death. Broken by the games, he simply wanders and falls off of a pedestal and, considering that we see his dead body, the guy is definitely gone.

Kneecap shocked exactly as expected at a raucous Glastonbury set on Saturday.
The Irish rap trio has drawn widespread criticism in recent months, with one of the members, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, charged with a terror offence last month. Glastonbury partner, the BBC, stood by their decision to air their set, despite U.K. culture secretary Lisa Nandy’s comments that the band “thrive on the oxygen of publicity.” Nandy said Thursday: “Personally, I don’t want to see that on TV screens.”
On Saturday afternoon at Glastonbury’s West Holts stage, which was fenced off as they came on due to overcrowding, Ó hAnnaidh told the 30,000-person crowd: “Glastonbury, I’m a free man!” Clips of newsreaders announcing his terror charge played before the band came on, as well as pro-Palestine messages and videos of various U.K. politicians criticizing the decision to have the band play at the festival.

Star Oscar Isaac didn't have a great time playing the titular villain in the 2016 superhero movie X-Men: Apocalypse, which served as the highly anticipated follow-up to the tremendously successful blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past. In an interview with GQ, he said that working on the movie was "excruciating," mainly because he was covered in prosthetics and barely got an opportunity to interact with his talented co-stars. The hard work wasn't exactly worth it, with the movie earning mediocre reviews and underperforming at the box office. It concluded its global run with $543 million, and has now been overtaken by Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.

Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe wrapped up The Infinity Saga with "Avengers: Endgame" and "Spider-Man: Far From Home" (and Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox) in 2019, Marvel Studios has slowly started to introduce the X-Men into the MCU. Characters with mutant connections such as Patrick Stewart's Professor X, Kelsey Grammer's Beast, and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine have been popping up in the phases that followed. Plus, True Believers were able to return to the fan-favorite world of "X-Men: The Animated Series" thanks to "X-Men '97" on Disney+. Now, after the initial casting announcement for the highly anticipated "Avengers: Doomsday," the mutant presence is about to increase exponentially.

Kate Winslet Revealed How Her Weight Shaped Her Career (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
The Titanic actress, Kate Winslet, is one of the hardest-working and dedicated actresses who has given back-to-back hits to Hollywood. Despite achieving so much success in her career, she has often been scrutinized for her weight. In the initial days of her career, she used to get very insecure about how she looked, and even her weight scale used to decide what kind of roles she would do.
However, Winslet never once thought of getting Ozempic in her diet to lose the extra pounds. Rather, she didn’t even know what that was until, during one of her interviews, a reporter gave in some details about it. The actress revealed how late Joan Rivers once joked about her weight and said that it was she who sank the Titanic. Scroll ahead to find out her take on weight transformation.

Magneto’s Evolution: Ian McKellen & Michael Fassbender’s Iconic Take On The X-Men Antihero (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)
Before the MCU and multiverse mayhem, X-Men kicked off a different kind of cinematic universe. And at the center of it stood a metal-bending mutant who blurred the line between villain and visionary. Magneto. Played first by Ian McKellen and then reimagined by Michael Fassbender, the Master of Magnetism became a rare pop culture force who thrived across timelines, reboots, and philosophical battles.
McKellen defined Magneto. His entrance in the 2000 X-Men film brought gravitas and cold precision to a man hardened by tragedy. That infamous prison break in X2? The Golden Gate Bridge lift in The Last Stand? They were cinematic declarations of power and purpose. His take on Magneto was battle-worn and bitter, yet strangely noble.

This Emmy season, four starry Best Drama contenders put a spin on the venerable spy genre. Three newbies, “The Agency” (Paramount+/Showtime), “The Day of the Jackal” (Peacock), and “Black Doves” (Netflix) are already prepping their second seasons, while one established series, “Slow Horses” (AppleTV+) will premiere Season 5 on September 24.
“Slow Horses” Season 4 has already scored a number of critic and guild nominations, following nine Emmy Primetime nominations and one win (showrunner/writer Will Smith) for Season 3. Inevitably, while critically lauded and popular, in a competitive field, the new shows are playing catch-up with the already established “Slow Horses.” But this year, anything can happen.
Three of these shows are British, while the American “The Agency” just looks British: It’s set at the CIA London office, is written by the British Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, and stars Irish Michael Fassbender playing American and British actress Jodie Turner-Smith playing Sudanese.

In the past 10 years or so, intimacy coordinators have become a go-to role in film sets where love scenes are being filmed. The urgency of having them on set greatly increased in the wake of the #MeToo movement that rocked Hollywood in late 2017. But some who’ve been working in the industry for quite some time have been skeptical of their utility. Sean Bean, for one, said that he thought intimacy coordinators ruined the “spontaneity” and “chemistry” between actors.
Now Richard Gere has joined their ranks. In an interview with The Wrap about the Paramount+ spy series “The Agency,” Gere spoke alongside his fellow actors on the show Michael Fassbender, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Jeffrey Wright. Fassbender and Turner-Smith play lovers, and both actors strongly endorsed the role of their intimacy coordinator on set.

With new releases and a few all-time greats, these Peacock movies are perfect for your next movie night.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Peacock quietly has one of the best movie lineups around. No, it doesn’t have the biggest library — but what it does have is a tight, well-curated mix of new releases, old favorites, and hidden gems that actually make scrolling fun instead of overwhelming. And full disclosure: my movie lists tend to be horror-light (not a huge horror person), and this one’s no exception. But if you’re into big-hearted comedies, smart thrillers, throwback blockbusters, along with a few buzzy new originals, you’re in the right place. Here are my top seven favorite movies streaming on Peacock right now.

Gerard Butler kicked off 2025 by reprising his role as Big Nick in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, but one action thriller from the star that’s nearly 20 years old has returned to streaming charts. Butler stars alongside Game of Thrones veteran Lena Headey and Dominic West in 300, the historical action epic telling the story of the 300 Spartan soldiers who stood courageously against Xerxes and his Persian army. 300 is currently streaming on Amazon MGM+, and not only is it trending in the United States, but it’s also piquing curiosity in other countries such as Peru. 300 grossed a whopping $456 million at the box office in 2006 on a $65 million budget, and the film also earned a 61% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 89% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.
In addition to Butler, Headey, and West, 300 also stars Michael Fassbender as Stelios, Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes, and Peter Mensah as the Messenger.

Having passed the $500 million mark at the global box office, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is staring at perhaps its most difficult mission yet. It needs to gross another $300 million in order to break even, considering how pricey it was. The film was marketed as the final installment of the long-running action franchise, and is coming on the back of a predecessor that noticeably underperformed at the box office despite positive reviews. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has established himself as something of an action visionary over the last decade that he has spent working on these films, The Final Reckoning has now passed the lifetime domestic total of another visionary's blockbuster.
With $169 million at the domestic box office, The Final Reckoning has surpassed the $167 million haul of David Fincher's Gone Girl. Released in 2014, it remains Fincher's final theatrical title; he has since directed only streaming projects.

Since the #MeToo movement began in the late 2010s, a new person has been added to the crew of many films and television shows that include love scenes or nudity: the intimacy coordinator, who works with actors and filmmakers to plot out comfortable levels of contact and exposure in those scenes.
Some actors swear by intimacy coordinators, with Dakota Johnson and Michelle Williams praising their work on “Materialists” and “Dying for Sex” recently. Some prefer not to use them, a decision that Mikey Madison made for her Oscar-winning performance in “Anora.”
And some actors are puzzled by them. Richard Gere, who became a star in the late 1970s and early ’80s in a string of sexually-explicit films like “American Gigolo,” “Looking for Mr. Goodbar,” “An Officer and a Gentleman” and “No Mercy,” falls into this camp, judging by a recent Wrap interview with the stars of the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Agency.

The Paramount+/Showtime series “The Agency,” produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov and based on the French series “Le Bureau des Légendes,” is a classic spy thriller set in the London office of the Central Intelligence Agency — a flip side of “Slow Horses” where everybody’s very good at what they do, but the intrigue mounts, the global machinations get more complex and the fate of international relations hangs in the balance.

Alien: Earth star Sydney Chandler has landed a leading role in a science fiction road movie alongside Shōgun star Takehiro Hira. Anima is being written and directed by documentary filmmaker Brian Tetsuro Ivie.
Per Deadline, Tetsuro Ivie will be making his feature directorial debut with an alternate future story that sounds like it could be a Black Mirror episode. Chandler stars in Anima as a young woman who impulsively goes on a very unusual road trip with an older man (played by Hira). When the man discovers his consciousness is fading, it's up to Chandler's character to get him to a cutting-edge facility where he can undergo a memory-upload surgery.
"I’ve always loved road movies and I’m very thankful to have two brilliant actors on the journey with me," Tetsuro Ivie said in a statement. "I really think people will be surprised by where the story goes."

Stars: Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, Gustaf Skarsgård, Tom Burke, Marisa Abela, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris, Kae Alexander, Pierce Brosnan | Written by David Koepp | Directed by Steven Soderbergh
There’s something deeply satisfying about watching Steven Soderbergh work in a minimalist mode – pared down, sharply composed, and operating with clinical precision. Black Bag is exactly that: a lean, cerebral spy thriller that trades explosions for glances, and car chases for loaded silences. It’s also one of the most deliciously grown-up films of the year.
From the moment the film begins, Soderbergh signals that we’re not in the world of shaken martinis or gadgetry. This is espionage as emotional warfare, and it plays out mostly in apartments, dinner tables, and discreet backrooms. The plot is deceptively simple: Michael Fassbender plays George, a British intelligence officer assigned to uncover a mole, who may be his own wife, played with icy finesse by Cate Blanchett.

Nothing in “The Agency” is personal until everything in “The Agency” is personal. Created by brothers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, the American spy thriller from Showtime and Paramount+ remakes Éric Rochant’s acclaimed French espionage drama, “The Bureau” — or “Le Bureau des Légendes.” Its profoundly intimidating core cast come together as the white-hot heart of an espionage love story. Season 1’s success as a suspenseful ten-episode arc hinges on your commitment to its characters.

The crossover between the samurai and the western genres is one of the biggest and most important intersections in cinema history. Every movie buff knows that westerns influenced samurai movies, which inspired westerns, which influenced the samurai genre to evolve, with the back-and-forth repeating for several more cycles. Tornado, a new action thriller directed by John Maclean, is a love letter to both genres as it blends the tropes, conventions, and iconography of samurai and western movies to create a truly unique amalgamation. As you'd then expect, Maclean was inspired by some true classics, as well as some lesser-known gems of both genres.
John Maclean sat down with MovieWeb's George Edelman to discuss his new feature, Tornado. The film held its world premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival in February of this year, and is set for a wider theatrical release on June 13. Tornado is far from Maclean's first western — 2015's Slow West,...

There are some gnarly things happening in the "Alien: Earth" trailer that was released this week, and we don't just mean the space beasties that don't resemble our favorite signature phallic-shaped horrors. Besides a blonde-haired Timothy Olyphant talking about the critical cargo on board the unfortunate shipwreck that we'll be investigating in Noah Hawley's new television series, there's an important additional feature that's being given to androids that could send the synthetics in directions we never could've imagined.
One big surprise teased in the new series is that Sydney Chandler, who looks to be playing the show's lead character, Wendy, is going through a wild transformation. At the Neverland test facility, Wendy, a seemingly severely ill young girl, is having her consciousness transferred into an adult android body for reasons unknown, which reaches a successful outcome. Ridley Scott’s Alien is widely considered one of the most influential science fiction and horror films of all time. Alien received mixed reviews at the time of release but managed to find success at the box office. Scott was meticulous with the film and did everything in his capacity to bring his vision to the screen.
However, after the film, Scott largely stayed away from the franchise for the sequels. He wasn’t too appreciative of the sequel films, although he may have had a few kind words to say about James Cameron’s Aliens. Scott, who recently served as a producer on Alien: Romulus, confirmed that he will not be directing any more Alien films.

The newly branded DC Studios technically began last year with the Max original animated series, Creature Commandos. However, James Gunn's Superman will have a significant impact on future film and television projects moving forward. Gunn's take on the Man of Steel has plenty of people excited, not just about this new iteration of the character, but also because of the large number of DC heroes and villains who will be featured in the film as well. One such character is Mister Terrific, played by Edi Gathegi. The actor has played a Marvel character in the past, although he doesn't like discussing it too much.
While talking on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast to promote Superman, Gathegi was asked about whether he feels that Mister Terrific is his first real chance to play a superhero. The question was clearly intended to lead to a discussion about the actor's...

No two horror movie villains ever seemed more ideally suited for one another than the Predator and the Alien, the cinema’s greatest hunter and cinema’s deadliest beast.
Created by very different filmmakers in totally different decades, the idea that these two creatures co-existed stems from a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Easter egg in “Predator 2,” which briefly showed the head of the iconic Alien inside of a Predator’s trophy case. In the years to come they would share top billing in comic books, video games and eventually a couple of movies, to the extent that the two franchises now feel indelibly linked, even when new installments of each monster’s movie makes no mention of the other.
Let’s take a look at both series, together, to see how the films stack up individually and as a unit.

Brad Pitt’s new F1 movie will race into theaters in just a few weeks, but one of the most iconic films of his career has become a global streaming hit more than 25 years after it was released. Pitt stars alongside Edward Norton in Fight Club, the 1999 psychological thriller following an office worker and a soap maker who team up to form an underground fight club that evolves into something much more. Fight Club debuted on Max at the start of the month, and the film has surged into the streamer’s top 10, sitting at #7 at the time of writing. Pitt famously turned to his co-star Edward Norton at the 1999 Venice Film Festival — as Fight Club was being rigorously booed — and said, “This is the best movie I’m ever going to be in.”

The White Lotus star recently filmed for an Actors on Actors conversation with his father, and was joined by DeVito on the set. Carrie Coon had a moment of tough-love with Patrick Schwarzenegger that only a seasoned actor could deliver with a smile. After one too many smug and brooding roles, she pointed out something that had started to become clear: he was so good at playing the jerk that people were beginning to think it wasn’t an act.
It’s a turning point that feels familiar, especially to anyone who’s followed his dad’s early film career. Arnold Schwarzenegger once found himself boxed into the action-hero role, with studios unwilling to see him as anything but the guy with muscles and a mission.
Now, Patrick finds himself at a similar crossroads. With Carrie’s advice, he’s got all the tools to break the mold and show there’s more to him than just being a good douche.

Guy Ritchie is known for his stylistic storytelling, and the way he mixes up gritty action with slick dialogue and suave antiheroes is truly commendable. But even professionals of his caliber can misfire at times because back in 2015, Ritchie attempted to bring back a beloved ‘60s spy franchise.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. had a Cold War setting, sleek suits, and international espionage, which made it seem like a box office hit on paper. But despite looking polished and having charismatic leads, the movie failed to impress, and it wasn’t just the public, but a string of actors who dodged the project even before it began production.

When Gone Girl hit theaters in 2014, most of the attention centered on Rosamund Pike’s spine-chilling performance and the film’s toe-curling plot twist. Buried deep amidst the film’s chaos was a blink-and-you-miss-it moment from Ben Affleck that quietly broke a long-standing Hollywood taboo/rule. Do you remember?.
In case you can’t, let us jog your memory, in a quick shower scene for Gone Girl, Affleck went full frontal, in short, challenging the industry that normalized female nudity but kept its leading men all cozy and covered. What’s more surprising is that no one talked about it, leaving the actor’s efforts to break tradition swept under the carpet.

Feel bad horror is a strain of cinema that swaps campy fun for corrosive dread, satisfying endings for bleak final beats, and thrilling tension for unsettling situations. They’re films that leave you, not just simply scared, but emotionally run through the ringer. Shocking no one who has seen 2022’s Talk to Me, Danny and Michael Philippou’s brand-new follow-up film, Bring Her Back, doesn’t just dabble in dread and grief, it full-on bathes in it.
In the film, a newly orphaned brother and sister discover a wealth of terrifying secrets hiding within the walls of their new foster mother’s and brother’s home. It’s a narrative so unrelenting in its portrayal of loss and anguish that Meagan Navarro called it “the feel bad horror movie of the year” in her review. This is a world where hope is but a fleeting spark, and every moment feels...

During Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal, it was confirmed that Sir Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Magneto in the long-awaited Multiverse Saga finale.
The actor first played the Master of Magnetism in 2000, and continued to do so until 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. When the latter was released, he shared the role with Michael Fassbender, but it's hardly surprising that Kevin Feige is bringing back the Og Magneto.
While the villain has been front and centre in just about every X-Men movie, whether those did him justice is another matter altogether. X-Men: The Last Stand succeeded in showing what Magneto could do when he let loose with his powers, and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants...well, the group often left fans wanting more.
We'd bet on that changing in Avengers: Doomsday, and a new rumour suggests Magneto resides in a castle in the movie. The...

When X-Men arrived on the big screen in 2000, the comic book world was very different. DC Comics had been successful in movies until 1997's infamous Batman & Robin ended that trend. Marvel was much worse, though, with rough projects until 1998's Blade became a hit and changed things forever.
So when Bryan Singer brought X-Men to the big screen, hopes were high he could reverse this trend. He more than succeeded as the movie was a smash hit that pleased not just comic book fans but general audiences as well. It would begin an epic franchise that would see various ups and downs over the next two decades.
The movies are unique, with a "prequel" series coming after the original trilogy that links back to the older films, along with some good spinoffs. Sadly, not every entry is top-notch. When the films are good, they're great, but when they're bad,...
