Robert & Michelle King’s ‘Cupertino’ Moves Forward At CBS With Writers Room & Order For 12 Scripts
Image
Robert and Michelle King’s latest drama project for CBS is taking a step forward, with the network ordering a full writers room to produce 12 scripts of Cupertino, described as David vs. Goliath legal show set in Silicon Valley. The series is targeted for the 2026-27 season.

The move was announced by CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach at the network’s upfront press event Wednesday.

It comes after Deadline reported earlier this spring that the Kings’ pilot script had been delivered to CBS to a great response. (Cupertino had originally been set up at CBS for development last summer.)

“When we read the script, it was a no-brainer that we wanted to move forward with the project under our longterm development,” Reisenbach said.

‘October 8’ Review: Disturbing Documentary Surveys Surge in Antisemitism After Hamas Attacks
Image
October 7, 2023, marked the largest massacre of Jews to take place since the Holocaust, with 251 hostages taken by Hamas as well. Wendy Sachs’ documentary isn’t about that horrific event, although it includes disturbing footage from the infamous day and harrowing testimony by survivors. Rather, it concerns what happened immediately afterward, namely the precipitous rise in antisemitism that manifested itself in demonstrations on college campuses, on the streets and in social media. For those concerned about this growing problem — and everyone should be — October 8 is mandatory viewing.

There is certainly a strong case to be made against Israel’s longstanding mistreatment of Palestinians, as well as against the morality and legality of its ongoing military response in Gaza. But there was something truly perverse about the way in which anti-Israel sentiment came to a fever pitch in the immediate aftermath of the massacre, and the manner in which it morphed into antisemitism.

Sundance Review: By Design is a Challenging Look at the Broke and Bougie
Image
Offering a twist on the body-swap genre, Amanda Kramer’s Sundance Next entry By Design feels, at first glance, more suited to the stage or gallery than cinema. It’s a story about luxury, envy, and longing with a dry tone that requires patience but doesn’t quite deliver a rewarding experience beyond the metaphor it continues returning to: resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. For the characters there is a certain fear of missing out and becoming simply another piece of furniture. When the narrator (Melanie Griffith) can no longer adequately provide the right expository information, the film switches to dance.

Juliette Lewis stars as Camile, a broke woman who lunches with pals Lisa (Samantha Mathis) and Irene (Robin Tunney) before going shopping at an exclusive furniture store that sells one-off chairs. Camile finds herself fixated on a chair that may or...

Image
Exclusive: Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the documentary October H8te, the explosive Oscar-contending film directed by Wendy Sachs.

Briarcliff plans a theatrical release in the first quarter of 2025 for the film, which documents the sharp rise in antisemitism and anti-Israel demonstrations that immediately followed the devastating October 7 Hamas sneak attack on Israel and have continued since. It devotes particular attention to anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests that erupted on college campuses in the U.S., leading to instances of harassment of Jewish students and defenders of Israel.

Debra Messing on November 18, 2024 in New York City

Actress Debra Messing, one of the few Hollywood stars to speak out ardently and publicly against acts of hate against Jewish and pro-Israel individuals, serves as an executive producer of October H8te and appears on camera in the documentary.

White Dudes For Harris Online Rally Raises Millions In Donations But Then Sees X Account Suspended
Image
Update: The White Dudes for Harris X account is back up.

“After a groundswell of complaints to Elon Musk from the White Dudes for Harris community, our account was reinstated & we’re allowed to post again,” the group said this afternoon.

Ross Morales Rocketto, key organizer of the group, wrote that it was “funny” that after the call on Monday night, which raised more than $4 million for Kamala Harris’ campaign, “Elon Musk suspended our account as I got hundreds of insults and memes from white supremacist bot accounts that are still active.”

Previously: A White Dudes for Harris online rally raised more than $4M in donations in a matter of hours but then saw its X account suspended, prompting concern from organizers.

Among those to contribute to the virtual You Tube event were J.J. Abrams, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Groban, Sean Astin, Michael Kelly, Josh Gad, Jeff Bridges and Mark Hamill.

White Dudes For Harris Draws $50,000 Match From J.J. Abrams & Support Of Jeff Bridges, Mark Hamill And Other Hollywood Figures
Image
Updated: A White Dudes for Harris online rally raised more than $4 million for Kamala Harris’ campaign, as a mix of vice presidential hopefuls, labor leaders and Hollywood celebrities sought to capitalize on the new Democratic enthusiasm with a bit of a twist.

On the virtual You Tube event, J.J. Abrams chipped in a $50,000 match, while figures like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Groban, Bradley Whitford, Rory O’Malley, Paul Scheer, Adam Conover, Sean Astin, Michael Kelly, Lance Bass, Tim Daly and Josh Gad appeared. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the appearance of Jeff Bridges, “The Dude” in The Big Lebowski.

“I’m white, I’m a dude and I’m for Harris,” Bridges said.

The viewership reached about 65,000, while more than 190,000 tuned in at some point, organizers said.

“I can see her being president,” Bridges said. “A woman president, man, how exciting.” He cited her stance on women’s rights and her stance...

After the assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Saturday, Comedy Central canceled its previously scheduled Monday show from Milwaukee where the Republican National Convention is taking place. “Our apologies for the inconvenience, but due to logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee, we need to reschedule our events on the ground in Wisconsin and will look to make those up in the coming weeks,” the network said.

Bill Maher Warns About Bad Choices And The People Who Make Them In ‘Real Time’
Image
When did Columbia become Kanye State? Bill Maher asked that question at the top of Friday’s Real Time on HBO, setting the tone for a show that focused on the national campus unrest and what’s behind it.

Maher attempted to answer that himself in his “New Rules” editorial, saying in a message to protesters blocking traffic in the name of a cause: “No one likes you.”

He contended that protesters fail to realize that they are not bringing people around to their point of view by making them late for work or from picking up a child from day care.

“You can glue your hands to the street, since your hands don’t have to do any work today,” Maher said, and claimed that for many social justice warriors, “It’s more about the warrioring than the causes.”

Vis-a-vis the current wave of pro-Palestinian protests, he suggested that...

Joe Biden Talks About Watching An AI Generated Deepfake Of Himself: “I Said, ‘When The Hell Did I Say That?'” — Update
Image
Update: President Joe Biden signed an executive order on AI, billing the U.S. as out front of other countries when it comes to establishing guardrails around the fast-emerging technology.

But Biden told those gathered in the East Room that other steps will require congressional action. That will be a much more complicated process, as lawmakers have been in a stalemate for years when it comes to any meaningful action on tech giants.

Speaking to reporters after the White House ceremony, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-ny) said that his effort to craft a bill. “This is about the hardest thing I have attempted to undertake legislatively because a) it is so complicated, and b) it affects every aspect of society.” Schumer said that he and the rest of a bipartisan group of lawmakers will meet with Biden on Tuesday to talk about the legislation.

Biden specifically mentioned the need...

Bill Maher Struggles To Make Sense Of The Senseless On ‘Real Time’
Image
How do you deal with a world where finger-pointing, bureaucracy, mob actions and a lack of initiative stall progress? That was the running theme of Friday’s Real Time on HBO, as a downbeat Bill Maher took on a world that was clearly vexing him greatly.

The show started out with an appearance by former Democratic Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo and his former Chief of Staff, Melissa DeRosa, author of What’s Left Unsaid: My Life at the Center of Power, Politics and Crisis.

Cuomo was forced to resign his post because of sexual harassment allegations. But there’s apparently more to the story than the accusations, and DeRosa and Cuomo blamed the New York Times and the lemming-like approach of the media in sloppily telling the story for Cuomo’s fall from grace.

Maher – who said he didn’t want to carry water for the two – did...

Bill Maher Cuts Hollywood’s Nepo Babies Down To Size, Praises Meritocracy On ‘Real Time’
Image
Never Give A Sucker An Even Break was a 1941 movie from W.C. Fields. But it could have been the theme to Bill Maher’s Real Time on Friday night.

From Donald Trump’s latest foibles, through TikTok’s right to exist in the US, to the growing lost generation of young men, Maher and his guests tried to make sense of a world that seems to be flailing in its battle to find solutions.

Ultimately, Maher turned his guns on nepo babies, the children of the famous who feel they’ve hit a triple when they’re born on third base.

Maher’s New Rules editorial focused on the long string of Hollywood stars that got a leg up thanks to their connections, starting with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. “It doesn’t make them bad people or untalented,” Maher said. “But let’s also admit they weren’t the only...

Anderson Cooper, the longtime anchor who leads off CNN’s primetime schedule each weeknight, will expand his hosting duties with a new show, “Parental Guidance” on CNN Plus, the streaming-video hub expected to debut in the first quarter of 2022.
