"There's Just Nothing Like It" - Sunderfolk's Developers On Their Blizzard & Riot Origins, Anjali Bhimani, & Overcoming Tabletop Hurdles
Image
Sunderfolk is a fresh take on turn-based tactical RPGs that draws heavy inspiration from tabletop gaming, streamlining many of the mediums concepts digitally to make them more accessible. It comes from publisher Dreamhaven - a company created by Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime - and its in-house studio Secret Door, which boasts a staff of former developers from companies like Riot and Blizzard. Taking place in an entirely-underground fantasy world, the game will take players on a journey across the Sunderland through over 30 missions as they work to keep the village of Arden and its magical Brightstone safe from harm.

The title is designed with couch co-op in mind, utilizing mobile phones as a controller, and aims to foster the same social experience created by games like Dungeons & Dragons. In order to make the game better capture the feeling of having a Gm, actress Anjali Bhimani, known for roles in games like Apex Legends,...

Sunderfolk Hands-On Preview: This Ttrpg-Inspired Game From Former Blizzard Devs Could "Transform Game Night"
Image
Sunderfolk is a new turn-based RPG that aims to ease some of the barriers players can face when trying to get into tabletop gaming. The upcoming title, which comes from publisher Dreamhavens in-house studio Secret Door, takes players to an underground fantasy universe for an experience that studio head Chris Sigaty says will transform game night. Screen Rant recently attended a hands-on event for the game where, alongside game director Erin Marek, we got to experience over two hours of multiplayer gameplay.

The title comes from a team of seasoned industry veterans: Dreamhaven is the creation of Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime, while Secret Door itself is made up of developers who worked for companies like Riot and Blizzard. The games cast is star-studded as well, though it only contains one person, Anjali Bhimani, whos known for roles in games like Stray Gods, Apex Legends, and Overwatch. A single voice-over actress...

You’re One of Those Heroes, Aren’t You? Blizzard Co-founder Reportedly Left after Getting Tired of Fighting Activision Who Wanted to “Make as Much Money as Possible”
Image
Mike Morhaime, co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, departed from the company in 2018, reportedly due to his ongoing clashes with Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. New details have been revealed in excerpts from Jason Schreier’s upcoming book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment.

The differing views between the two industry giants resulted in a big fallout. | Mike Morhaime at BlizzCon 2018.

According to this excerpt, Morhaime’s exit stemmed from a long-standing power struggle between his creative ideals and Kotick’s profit-driven focus. Morhaime, who valued the studio’s player-centric culture, found himself at odds with Kotick’s aggressive push for maximizing revenue, a conflict that would ultimately lead to his resignation.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Developer Hints Loot Boxes Were Activision Decision
Matthew Byrd Feb 22, 2019

Did Activision force the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 team to incorporate loot boxes and other microtransactions?

Developer Treyarch claims that it had no intentions of introducing the controversial loot boxes and premium characters that are now live on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. A discussion on Reddit regarding how complicit Treyarch really was in this decision prompted Treyarch design chief David Vonderhaar to step in and set the record straight.

"Things change along the way... and not all of them are design decisions," Vonderhaar said on Reddit. "It's a chicken and egg problem. I can tell you what we have done and what we plan on doing, but things change that I can not predict or I didn't know about. Doubly true with the business side of things which have little insight into and even less control over."

The obvious takeaway from this statement is that...

Diablo Creator David Brevik Bashes Blizzard During Twitch Stream
Matthew Byrd Nov 15, 2018

The creator of Diablo has suggested that Blizzard's greed is slowly destroying the studio.

David Brevik, the creator of Diablo and the upcoming indie title It Lurks Below, recently went on a bit of a rant regarding the state of Blizzard in which he accused the company of prioritizing profits over its employees.

"The people above Blizzard, who are profit happy, [are saying] 'Oh my God, Fortnite is making a fucking shit ton,'" Brevik said on a stream that featured Twitch streamer thejunglequeen playing the Diablo-like Path of Exile. "'Overwatch isn't Fortnite...Why have you wronged us?...We're going to get rid of the profit sharing program. We don't like this. We don't like the fact that low-level employees make decent money at Blizzard. We're going to get rid of this program because we need more profits to increase our stock price and improve our shareholders...

Get Nostalgic in the StarCraft: Remastered Announcement Trailer
The classic science fiction Rts game is officially making a return with StarCraft: Remastered. This morning Blizzard made the announcement with a new trailer, and details on how the remaster will take advantage of modern technology. Come inside to check it all out!

Though it's far from the first in the Real-Time Strategy genre, StarCraft remains one of the genre's most influential game. On top of giving players a fun, futuristic story, StarCraft refined the gameplay formula to a sublme level, and helped lay the foundation for eSports as we know it now. It's long been one of my all time favorite games, and something I always tend to come back to.

Hell, I had it on the PC and even the N64 version and when I had to get off the computer in the house, I went to my room and fired up the Nintendo 64 version. I loved the StarCraft II games,...

How the 'Warcraft' Movie Failed
Travis Fimmel and Toby Kebbell in Warcraft : Le Commencement (2016)
The makers of the Warcraft movie did everything right. They tapped a video game universe with an immense collection of lore and backstories as source material. Director Duncan Jones had indie cred, a commercial and critical hit in Source Code, and a verifiable history of love for the games he was drawing from. His actors were intriguing performers who had shown great potential in other roles. Dean Redman, who plays Varis, said Jones helped the actors see their characters' motivations and goals, and then gave them the freedom to express...

Overwatch Gallery 1 of 52

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past several months, chances are you’ve heard of a rather popular game called Overwatch. You can’t go anywhere on the internet without seeing an advert, video, poster – whatever – for Blizzard’s online arena shooter, and for good reason: pretty much everyone is in agreement that the game is brilliant.

Indeed, a rather large audience is already enjoying mowing-down enemies with Bastion and sniping stragglers with Widowmaker. A whole 7 million of you, in fact. As confirmed by Blizzard (via VideoGamer), a total of 119 million hours of game time have been logged since Overwatch launched last week on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime calling it “one of the most successful global game launches of all time”.

Over the months and weeks leading up to release we saw...

Warcraft Makes a Killing at International Box Office with $16.3M
Travis Fimmel and Toby Kebbell in Warcraft : Le Commencement (2016)
A few of the major movie sites around the Internet have published advanced reviews for Warcraft, which do not paint it in a favorable light. Most call it a movie made for gamers only, and some have hinted at a big summer flop. While we don't know how the movie will fare on U.S. soil, as it won't open until June 10, the movie is making a killing with an impressive $16.3M debut through Friday in International markets.

Directed by the late David Bowie's son Duncan Jones, Warcraft arrives from Legendary and Universal Pictures as yet another video game adaptation in a market that has not been favorable to them. The movie took in $9.3M on Thursday, invading a total of 20 markets. The movie is currently #1 at the foreign box office in 19 of those, defying expectations all around. According to Deadline, the movie is looking at a weekend cume of $30M.

Warcraft Featurette Includes New Footage and Story Details + Character Portraits
Warcraft is going to easily be one of the most visually stunning films of the year. I also think it will end up being one of the best video game films made so far.

Today we have a new featurette called “The Beginning” with new footage from the film along with interviews with the cast and crew. This featurette is actually the best piece of marketing for the film I've seen so far. There's also a second featurette that focuses on Paula Patton's transformation into the character Garona.

I also included a series of portraits that focus on the CGI characters of the film and the actors who portray them. They highlight the transformation that took place to turn these humans into Orcs for this film.

The effects of the film were done by Ilm, and they did such an incredible job bringing these characters to life. The detail...

Overwatch Beta Pulled In A Record-Breaking 9.7 Million Players
Going live right around the time Gearbox’s fellow hero shooter Battleborn debuted, if Blizzard Entertainment’s beta for Overwatch opened against hefty competition it didn’t show, with the publisher confirming that the online testing session fast became the biggest in Blizzard’s decorated history.

Pulling in a total of 9.7 million players across PS4, Xbox One and PC, the fact that the beta test ran for almost a week no doubt helped push those numbers higher, but it’s a remarkable tally nonetheless.

For the sake of comparison, Overwatch‘s open beta broke past both Destiny and The Division‘s total, pre-release player count – 4.6 and 6.4 million, respectively – which were both record-setters for a brief period.

Here’s the official announcement via the game’s Twitter account.

The world needed heroes, and an incredible 9.7 Million of you answered the call. Here’s to our next adventure! pic.twitter.com/YIusT...

And the latest trailer promises an epic fantasy blockbuster that is sure to thrill genre fans. But will the rest of America be buying that ticket?

Warcraft has a good shot at become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. The competition is fairly lax, though. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider currently holds the record with $131.1 million, and this movie debuted way back in 2001. If Warcraft is a hit, it could pave the way for other highly-anticipated movies such as Assassin's Creed, starring Michael Fassbender, and Splinter Cell, which has Tom Hardy set to star.

This epic battle could very well kickstart a new wave of successful video game adaptations, some of which are already in the works.

This movie's potential success could pave the way for other highly-anticipated movies such as Assassin's Creed, starring Michael Fassbender, and Splinter Cell, which has Tom Hardy set to star. As one would expect, it’s shot from an obscure angle, and while it isn’t a fair indication of the final product – visually or aurally – the video above does at least illustrate some of the special effects that we can expect from Legendary’s blockbuster.
