"This is normal, right? People go through stuff like this in the first year of marriage?" "No..." Neon has unveiled the first official trailer for a kooky relationship comedy called Splitsville, the second feature from writer / director Michael Angelo Covino who also made The Climb back in 2019 (another crazy fun one). This recently premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival to mostly positive reviews, playing in the out-of-competition Cannes Premiere section. Splitsville picks up with Ashley (Adria Arjona) asking for a divorce, watching as the good-natured Carey (Kyle Marvin) runs over to his friends, Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Michael Covino), for support. He’s shocked to discover that the secret to their happiness is apparently an open marriage; that is, until Carey crosses the line and throws all their relationships into chaos. It's another movie making fun of how open relationships never work and always screw things up – but they're...

The trailer for Splitsville is out, and it gives a wild glimpse into the kind of trouble that can happen when couples try to solve their problems in risky ways.
Starring Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona, the film is a comedy about relationships falling apart, blurred lines between friends, and what happens when rules get ignored.
The story focuses on two couples who are close friends. One pair is going through a divorce, while the other is testing out an open marriage.
But things take a messy turn when one of the men ends up sleeping with the other man’s wife. What starts as an experiment in honesty quickly leads to hurt feelings, jealousy, and conflict.
Michael Angelo Covino directed the film and also appears in it. He co-wrote the script with Kyle Marvin. Both have worked together before, and this time they’re also part of the cast.

The trailer for Splitsville is finally here, and it gives a funny but chaotic look into what happens when a marriage on the edge gets even more complicated. Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona star in the upcoming comedy, which takes a bold swing at relationships, open marriages, and the emotional mess that can come with them.

According to the official synopsis, the story centers around two couples whose friendship breaks down after the husband from the divorcing couple sleeps with the wife from the open marriage.
Splitsville is directed by Michael Angelo Covino, who also acts in the film. He co-wrote the screenplay with Kyle Marvin.

Some people make marriage look easy, but it takes strong communication and compromise to keep things on track. It’s a bit cliche, but if the foundation of your union isn’t teamwork, understanding, and loyalty, you could be doomed to fail before you begin. In Neon and Topic Studios’ Splitsville trailer, two couples discover the pitfalls of polyamory and how one night (or several) of release can invite chaos into an already complicated situation.
Here’s the official synopsis for Splitsville, courtesy of Neon and Topic Studios:
After Ashley (Adria Arjona) asks for a divorce, good-natured Carey (Kyle Marvin) runs to his friends, Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Michael Angelo Corvino), for support. He’s shocked to discover that the secret to their happiness is an open marriage, that is, until Carey crosses the line and throws all of their relationships into chaos.

If you’re open to it, Neon’s upcoming comedy “Splitsville” out of Cannes promises to examine the absurd inner workings of two couples who are opening up the relationship.
As seen in the new trailer out Monday, Kyle Marvin and Adria Arjona’s marriage isn’t working out so well — but luckily, their friends Michael Angelo Covino and Dakota Johnson are trying out non-monogamy and are more than happy to share what they’ve learned.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, though, they may not be as open to sharing as they appear, as evident by the blood on the carpet, the broken window and the broken table.
While the trailer paints this movie more as a double date, in his positive Cannes review of “Splitsville” for TheWrap, Ben Croll called the film “a bromance between creative collaborators looking to pique each other’s sensibility and screen-persona.”
“After rising with the 2019 bro-down ‘The Climb,...

Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona are continuing their respective indie reigns: After Arjona stole scenes in “Blink Twice” (and now appears in “Andor”), and just as Johnson is helping make box office history at A24 with “Materialists,” both actresses are adding in yet another critically acclaimed hit to their summer resume with “Splitsville.”
The comedy was first announced in 2024 and recently premiered at Cannes 2025. Michael Angelo Covino directs and co-writes with his “The Climb” collaborator Kyle Marvin; the duo also star alongside Johnson and Arjona as their respective spouses in “Splitsville.”
Yet it’s the buzzy synopsis, and not just the casting, that will turn heads: Ashley (Arjona) wants a divorce from her husband Carey (Marvin), who seeks marital advice from his friends Julie (Johnson) and Paul (Covino). Ruben Ostlund has described the “tough shoot” of The Entertainment System Is Down as he edits the film on a laptop on a Croatian island.
As well as key cast including Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton, Tobias Menzies, Daniel Bruhl and Julie Delpy, the film includes 150 extras. All of these background artists had to remain in the same seat for continuity. Ostlund says that some of them appear in the film for longer than several named cast, despite the extras not having any dialogue.

Pass the salt and… pepa! How could we forget about this one? Sir Patrick Stewart, then still merely Patrick Stewart, hosted Saturday Night Live. It was February 5, 1994, the 12th episode of the long-running show’s 19th season. As part of his hosting responsibilities, he had to introduce the episode’s musical act, in this case Salt-N-Pepa, the popular hip-hop group led by Cheryl James (Salt) and Sandra Denton (Pepa). Stewart, best known at the time as the super-serious Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation and as a respected Shakespearean performer, seemed particularly jazzed, and almost giddy, to introduce both of their performances that evening.
And, between Stewart’s evident excitement, his very British accent, and the singular word “Pepa,” the actor delivered introductions that live on in people’s minds and… on the internet, which forgets absolutely nothing. Which brings us to February 16, 2025, when Stewart took to...

Dakota Johnson has had many critically acclaimed projects, and her latest rom-com, Materialistscontinues the same trend. The film marks her first project since Madame Web, and it completely redeems the poor reception the superhero film got.
Materialists brings back love triangles, with Johnson's Lucy, who plays a matchmaker in New York, torn between her perfect match, Pascal's Harry, and Evans' John, her ex. The rom-com comes from acclaimed filmmaker Celine Song, who made her debut with the Oscar-nominated romance Past Lives. Ahead of its release in theaters on June 13,Materialists debuted with a thrilling 92% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The exciting 92% score is currently out of 25 reviews, and it might fluctuate as more critics share their opinion on the film. Since the movie is set to hit theaters on Friday, it has yet to include an audience score. It's also an interesting mix of superhero stars,...

Because "Succession" began its run in 2018 in the shadow of HBO juggernauts like "Game of Thrones," which was drawing to a close and ultimately ended in 2019, I feel like it didn't get a ton of attention while everyone was laser-focused on Westeros and who would end up atop the Iron Throne. As "Succession" continued, though, Jesse Armstrong's show about an evil, super-wealthy family who also happen to be fighting over a seat to a throne — though it's a bit more metaphorical than the one in "Game of Thrones" — picked up traction, and before long, it became yet another massive critical and commercial success for HBO.
Armstrong and his talented team of writers and directors introduced the world to the powerful Roy family, the patriarch of whom — Logan, played imperiously by Brian Cox — runs a massive media and entertainment company called Waystar RoyCo.

What many of us know as screwball comedies — particularly the great ones of the 1930s and 40s — philosopher Stanley Cavell famously dubbed “remarriage comedies,” describing a popular template in which wedded couples drifted apart at the start of the movie, only to get back together at the end. In between were all the hijinks.
For their second feature after the impressively helmed 2019 bromance, The Climb, Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin return to Cannes with Splitsville, a bona fide remarriage comedy that shows the pair expanding into broader material, all the while keeping many of their tastes and idiosyncrasies intact.
Co-starring Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona, who play a pair of smart, dynamic women opposite two total goofballs, this Neon-distributed effort will hopefully find a larger audience than the duo’s first film. Splitsville may be less unique than The Climb, but it’s just as accomplished, making for the...

Michael Angelo Covino’s open marriage comedy “Splitsville” brought much-needed laughter to Cannes on Monday night, earning a warm six-minute ovation.
As the applause roared, director Covino teared up and Dakota Johnson comforted him with a hug as he kissed her on the cheek.
It was Johnson’s first time in Cannes, but as a Venice Film Festival veteran she’s no stranger to applause. Even still, she humbly waved off the cheers when the camera panned to her first. Then, when Arjona got her roar of approval, her boyfriend Jason Momoa could be seen clapping enthusiastically in the row behind her. Covina and Marvin shared a brotherly embrace as they celebrated another well-received collaboration.
“We need to keep making comedies for Cannes, plain and simple. Because laughter should be seen in a theater, not on a television screen,” said Covino.

Michael Angelo Covino’s sophomore feature directing effort, Splitsville, was unveiled this evening as part of the Cannes Film Festival Premiere section. It was greeted with a eight-minute reception.
The comedy, co-written by Covino and Kyle Martin, follows Ashley (Adria Arjona) who, after asking for a divorce, spurs the good-natured Carey (Kyle Marvin) to run to his friends, Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Covino), for support. Their secret to happiness is an open marriage; that is, until Carey crosses the line and throws all of their relationships into chaos. The movie also stars Nicholas Braun, O-t Fagbenle, David Castañeda and Charlie Gillespie.

Six years later, they finally are back on the Croisette for tonight’s Out of Competition premiere of a new comedy all about marriage in crisis, Splitsville, and I am happy to report they are firing on all cylinders with this truly hilarious look at two couples who are best friends but find their marriages suddenly are blowing up.

There’s a sequence early into “Splitsville,” premiering out of competition in Cannes, that makes you realize just why the team of Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin wanted to make this movie. The writers and actors best known for their indie hit “The Climb” have returned with a flashier cast for this new endeavor, but maybe they weren’t seeking bigger profile projects with glamorous movie stars. Maybe they just wanted to beat each other to a pulp.
What results is one of the funniest fight scenes in recent memory. It starts with slapping and then turns to wrestling, followed by increasing levels of destruction as the two lay waste to a gorgeous Hamptons home, breaking tables and bashing in the walls. Covino, who also serves as director, and Marvin let their bodies flail around for maximum hilarity, and each new phase of their brawl includes another surprising, uproarious micro set piece.

It’s not the first time Topic Studios’ EVP of film & documentary Ryan Heller has taken a film he produced to Cannes. In fact, it’s not even his first time with a film directed by Michael Covino: their previous collaboration, “The Climb,” won the Heart Prize in Un Certain Regard at the fest in 2019.
But when Topic debuts its new film – the open marriage comedy “Splitsville,” starring Dakota Johnson, Adria Arjona, Nicholas Braun, Covino and the film’s co-writer Kyle Marvin – in Cannes’ Premiere section on May 19, it will mark yet another high point in what has been a remarkable year for Heller, who began his showbiz career as a guitarist with the indie rock band Aberdeen City.
In January, two documentaries Heller produced (“It’s Never Over: Jeff Buckley” and “Folktales”) received rapturous receptions when they premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and, two months later, Kieran Culkin...

The director of the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About Youis developing a sequel trilogy, more than a quarter of a century after the film starring the late Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles premiered. Per People, Gil Junger, who directed the original film, is working on a follow-up titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating, along with the original movie’s producer, Andrew Lazar.
It doesn’t end there, as Junger is proposing that 10 Things I Hate About Dating is just the first film in a sequel trilogy to the movie that also starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Gabrielle Union. Junger is reportedly penning the script for the first film with Naya Elle James. Exclusive: We can tell you first that Amazon MGM Studios’ action comedy Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie is moving baa, err, back from Feb 20 next year to the Nov. 13, 2026 slot. Amazon MGM Studios has been in that pre-Thanksgiving corridor before with last year’s Dwayne Johnson-Chris Evans’ Santa Claus movie Red One. The reason behind the shift I hear is to pull in more families.
Currently, there’s only an untitled Universal movie on the pic’s new date.
The Kyle Balda directed, Craig Mazin written Working Title and Three Strange Angels production follows George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), a shepherd who loves his sheep and raises them only for their wool. Every night he reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand, but never suspecting that not only can they understand but they argue for hours afterwards about whodunnit. When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances,...

Between his recurring role in The Last of Us and his looming MCU debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, 2025 is truly the year of Pedro Pascal. However, the new Reed Richards has another project coming this summer with two other Marvel stars. Pascal will star alongside Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson inMaterialists, the upcoming feel-good romantic comedy coming to theaters on June 13. Collider is happy to partner with A24 to debut an exclusive image of Johnson in the film, which was written and directed by Celine Song. Materialists follows a matchmaker (Johnson) and her lucrative business that gets complicated when she finds herself in the middle of a poisonous love triangle that threatens to bring down her and her clients.
Writer/director Celine Song previously made both her big screen writing and directorial debut on Past Lives, the 2023 Oscar-nominated drama led by Greta Lee that also stars Teo Yoo and John Magaro.

Among the lineup for the Cannes Film Festival’s 78th edition are some big names from Hollywood and global cinema. We already knew that Tom Cruise will light the fuse on Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning on May 14 out of competition, while there was plenty of speculation that Scarlett Johansson would have a pair of movies on the Croisette. The latter has now been confirmed with Johansson’s directorial debut Eleanor the Great set for Un Certain Regard, and her acting reteam with Wes Anderson in his latest, The Phoenician Scheme, in Competition. Also confirmed is Ari Aster’s Eddington with Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone.
Many more stars are potentially in store now that the bulk of the official selection has been revealed. Not everyone is confirmed to attend the Riviera shindig, but here’s a look at some of the possibilities.

Here's one you might not have "herd" about: Hugh Jackman is trading his Wolverine claws for Shepherding horns, as he is starring alongside Emma Thompson in Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie. The movie, as you may have guessed from its very specific title, is a detective story involving sheep, but since that is a slightly elusive and broad premise, the MCU actor appeared in a video segment at CinemaCon 2025 to provide a few more details about it. He also unveiled the first footage for the upcoming Amazon feature, which he describes as "a bit of a whodunit."
The footage, shown during the Amazon MGM Studios panel on Wednesday night, which was attended by The Hollywood Reporter, was succeeded by Thompson expressing her joy and enthusiasm for the project. So far, it’s been a busy 2025 for Harlow as he released his first single of the year, “Set You Free,” last month. The rapper was mostly quiet on the new-music front in 2024, only dropping two singles,...

Major Hollywood figures are pushing back against OpenAI and Google’s appeals to the U.S. government to allow their AI models to train on copyrighted works.
Film, television and music figures including Ron Howard, Cate Blanchett, Cynthia Erivo, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Taika Waititi and Ava Duvernay have signed on to a letter expressing alarm at the tech giants’ suggestions in recent submissions to a White House office that they should be able to access publicly available intellectual property.
“We firmly believe that America’s global AI leadership must not come at the expense of our essential creative industries,” the letter states, adding that the arts and entertainment industry provides more than 2.3 million jobs and bolsters America’s democratic values abroad. “But AI companies are asking to undermine this economic and cultural strength by weakening copyright protections for the films, television series, artworks, writing, music, and voices used to train...

Would you choose guard or prisoner? In 1971, a sociological and psychological study was conducted at the prestigious Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where Professor of psychology Dr. Philip Zimbardo (Billy Crudup) asked that question to some college students played by some of the brightest young stars in Hollywood. Kyle Patrick Alvarez directs the true story of 2015's The Stanford Prison Experiment, which is a gut-wrenching retelling of the true story of a theoretical study gone horribly awry. A stellar ensemble cast includes Michael Angarano, Nicholas Braun, Tye Sheridan, Ezra Miller and Olivia Thirlby as Alvarez deliberately paces the frighteningly real-life story. However, the performances of Miller and Angarano stand out as they become the de facto alphas of the two separate groups of guards and prisoners to see the effect that harsh oppression has on the human's sense of self. Zimbardo intended to strip these young men's individuality away and see what would happen.
