Following her current onscreen love triangle in A24‘s Materialists, Dakota Johnson is upping the ante with her next romantic comedy.

On Monday, Neon released the first trailer for co-writer, director and star Michael Angelo Covino‘s Splitsville, which sees him and Johnson as a couple in an open marriage who swings with their two friends going through their own marital issues. Watch it above.

The trailer for Splitsville is out, and it gives a wild glimpse into the kind of trouble that can happen when couples try to solve their problems in risky ways.

Starring Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona, the film is a comedy about relationships falling apart, blurred lines between friends, and what happens when rules get ignored.

The story focuses on two couples who are close friends. One pair is going through a divorce, while the other is testing out an open marriage.

As seen in the new trailer out Monday, Kyle Marvin and Adria Arjona’s marriage isn’t working out so well — but luckily, their friends Michael Angelo Covino and Dakota Johnson are trying out non-monogamy and are more than happy to share what they’ve learned.

Unfortunately for everyone involved, though, they may not be as open to sharing as they appear, as evident by the blood on the carpet, the broken window and the broken table.

Max will give audiences an early look at Jesse Armstrong’s new movie, “Mountainhead.”

The HBO original film, which was set to debut on May 31 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt across HBO and Max, will now be available for viewers to watch earlier on Max, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Pt/3:01 a.m. Et, the streamer announced Friday.

Even with the early Max debut, “Mountainhead” will still air on HBO at 8:00 p.m. Et/Pt, when it was originally scheduled.

“Mountainhead,” which marks Armstrong’s feature directorial debut, centers on a foursome of tech billionaires who get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis, per the official logline.

In “Mountainhead,” which wrapped production in Park City, Utah in early April, Steve Carell stars as Randall and Jason Schwartzman stars as Souper (Hugo Van Yalk) while Cory Michael Smith stars as Venis and Ramy Youssef stars as Jeff.

Because "Succession" began its run in 2018 in the shadow of HBO juggernauts like "Game of Thrones," which was drawing to a close and ultimately ended in 2019, I feel like it didn't get a ton of attention while everyone was laser-focused on Westeros and who would end up atop the Iron Throne. As "Succession" continued, though, Jesse Armstrong's show about an evil, super-wealthy family who also happen to be fighting over a seat to a throne — though it's a bit more metaphorical than the one in "Game of Thrones" — picked up traction, and before long, it became yet another massive critical and commercial success for HBO.

Armstrong and his talented team of writers and directors introduced the world to the powerful Roy family, the patriarch of whom — Logan, played imperiously by Brian Cox — runs a massive media and entertainment company called Waystar RoyCo.

What many of us know as screwball comedies — particularly the great ones of the 1930s and 40s — philosopher Stanley Cavell famously dubbed “remarriage comedies,” describing a popular template in which wedded couples drifted apart at the start of the movie, only to get back together at the end. In between were all the hijinks.

Michael Angelo Covino’s open marriage comedy “Splitsville” brought much-needed laughter to Cannes on Monday night, earning a warm six-minute ovation.

As the applause roared, director Covino teared up and Dakota Johnson comforted him with a hug as he kissed her on the cheek.

It was Johnson’s first time in Cannes, but as a Venice Film Festival veteran she’s no stranger to applause. Even still, she humbly waved off the cheers when the camera panned to her first. Then, when Arjona got her roar of approval, her boyfriend Jason Momoa could be seen clapping enthusiastically in the row behind her. Covina and Marvin shared a brotherly embrace as they celebrated another well-received collaboration.

“We need to keep making comedies for Cannes, plain and simple. Because laughter should be seen in a theater, not on a television screen,” said Covino.

In 2019 The Climb made a splash in Cannes like few independently made comedies ever could do as it won a prize in the Un Certain Regard section, drew major critical praise, got instant distribution from Sony Classics and put its creators and stars Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin on the map as filmmakers to watch. Six years later, they finally are back on the Croisette for tonight’s Out of Competition premiere of a new comedy all about marriage in crisis, Splitsville, and I am happy to report they are firing on all cylinders with this truly hilarious look at two couples who are best friends but find their marriages suddenly are blowing up.

In fact, I would say it is this film that will firmly establish them as true comedy heavyweights, whereas The Climb had several Lol moments but ran out of steam toward the end. Splitsville stays on course for all 100 minutes,...

There’s a sequence early into “Splitsville,” premiering out of competition in Cannes, that makes you realize just why the team of Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin wanted to make this movie. The writers and actors best known for their indie hit “The Climb” have returned with a flashier cast for this new endeavor, but maybe they weren’t seeking bigger profile projects with glamorous movie stars. Maybe they just wanted to beat each other to a pulp.

What results is one of the funniest fight scenes in recent memory. It starts with slapping and then turns to wrestling, followed by increasing levels of destruction as the two lay waste to a gorgeous Hamptons home, breaking tables and bashing in the walls. Covino, who also serves as director, and Marvin let their bodies flail around for maximum hilarity, and each new phase of their brawl includes another surprising, uproarious micro set piece.

It’s not the first time Topic Studios’ EVP of film & documentary Ryan Heller has taken a film he produced to Cannes. In fact, it’s not even his first time with a film directed by Michael Covino: their previous collaboration, “The Climb,” won the Heart Prize in Un Certain Regard at the fest in 2019.

But when Topic debuts its new film – the open marriage comedy “Splitsville,” starring Dakota Johnson, Adria Arjona, Nicholas Braun, Covino and the film’s co-writer Kyle Marvin – in Cannes’ Premiere section on May 19, it will mark yet another high point in what has been a remarkable year for Heller, who began his showbiz career as a guitarist with the indie rock band Aberdeen City.

Exclusive: Memento has hopped aboard Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down for French distribution from the Coproduction Office.

The satire from the two-time Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker is set on a long-haul flight between the UK and Australia where the entertainment system fails and passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.

The film is shooting in Budapest after production started in January.

It features an ensemble cast including Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Keanu Reeves, Nicholas Braun, and Julie Delpy.

A24 has already scooped US rights, Lionsgate Films for the UK, and Sf Studios has Nordic distribution rights.

The director of the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About Youis developing a sequel trilogy, more than a quarter of a century after the film starring the late Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles premiered. Per People, Gil Junger, who directed the original film, is working on a follow-up titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating, along with the original movie’s producer, Andrew Lazar.

It doesn’t end there, as Junger is proposing that 10 Things I Hate About Dating is just the first film in a sequel trilogy to the movie that also starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Gabrielle Union. Junger is reportedly penning the script for the first film with Naya Elle James. Junger’s planned trilogy also includes two more titles called 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

The Kyle Balda-directed project was previously scheduled to hit the theaters on February 20, 2026. The plot follows George Hardy (Jackman) as a shepherd who reads his sheep murder mystery stories at night, unaware that they can understand him. When George was murdered, the sheep decided to solve his murder when the case landed in the hands of an inexperienced local cop.

According to Deadline, the release date of Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie has been moved to November 2026. Amazon MGM Studios reportedly shifted the movie's scheduled slot for February next year to a pre-Thanksgiving release date to pull in more families. The movie's new release date is November 13.

Following the success of Succession, the show's creator Jesse Armstrong has continued his collaboration with HBO. The creator has switched from TV shows to an HBO Original film titled Mountainhead.

The multi-hyphenate’s upcoming film, Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie, got a CinemaCon reveal Wednesday night during the Amazon MGM Studios presentation inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Jackman and co-star Emma Thompson appeared in a video segment during the event to tease the film. “It was, as you’ll see from the clip, the most fantastic, loving, beautiful idea, this synthesis between animals and people,” she said.

Added Jackman about the film Kyle Balda directed from Craig Mazin’s script: “Craig Mazin’s wit is just second to none.”
