Siddharth Anand, director of reflects back on the making of 2008’s romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno, and talks with Subhash K Jha about the making of the film starting Ranbir Kapoor plus so much more.
Bachna Ae Haseeno came on the other side of your career when you made gentler non-action films, how do you look back on that phase of your career?
I look back at it with so much fun. I think there was just so much freedom, I was so carefree. I was working with friends, became friends with a lot of people, particularly there’s Bipasha, Deepika, Ranbir, who was already a friend.
So a lot of fun?
I think we had too much fun. It was a light film, it was a genre that I was really enjoying at that point in time. And every day was like, just going to have fun. It was like a party.

Katrina Kaif has now spoken about being dropped from Sidharth Anand’s Bachna Ae Haseeno. Back in 2008, when the film was released the director had spoken to this writer about this unfortunately but unavoidable elimination.
Siddharth had explained, “If we had kept Katrina’s portion Bachna Ae Haseeno would’ve been one of the longest films in the history of Hindi cinema – much beyond three hours.”
The director admitted it wasn’t easy breaking the news to Katrina. “Nobody had the heart to break the news to her. When she heard she was out, Katrina was really upset. What to do? In fact, Katrina’s track was one of our favourites, but she saw our point of view when she saw the film.”
Ranbir Kapoor played the main lead in this romantic comedy and was seen courting Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba, and Deepika Padukone.

Subhash K Jha revisits Shoojit Sircar’s directorial debut Yahaan, which released 20 years ago in a new installment of This Day That Year series.
Beautiful faces, smiling faces, saddened faces, perturbed faces… The Kashmir that we see in debutant director Shoojit Sircar’s Yahaan is a valley of mystery and joy. Cinematographer Jakob Ishre has used blue-tinged lenses to highlight the mood of doom and beauty.
There have been at least two other films earlier where love has unfolded in the clammy clasp of Kashmiri militancy. Neither Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir nor Ashok Pandit’s Sheen got the the sur of romance-in-the-times-of-ravages.
Yahaan inches closer to the romance and brutal realism of the Valley without losing out on the basic aethetic value of the story. Director Sircar takes his time to build up a romance. The early sequences showing the army offier Captain Aman(Jimmy Shergill) darting open-mouthed looks...

Director Samar Khan reflects back on the making of his court room drama Shaurya, which starred Kay Kay Menon, Rahul Bose, Javed Jaffrey, Deepak Dobriyal, and Minissha Lamba, as it clocks 17 years.
How do you look back on Shaurya?
I think Shaurya for me has been a life- defining film , it’s amazing that even after 17 years the film has a life of its own, and is interpreted in many ways by people who watch the film . I would have never imagined that the film would have become such an integral part of public discourse and people’s memories.
Some of Kay Kay Menon’s dialogues are being given a new interpretation after the Pahalgam incident?
I don’t think anyone ever imagines how the dialogues of their film would be interpreted or how much of an impact they would make, when we shot the scene with Kay Kay we...

Subhash K Jha, in another This Day That Year feature, he takes a look back at the fabulous satire of Shyam Benegal’s Well Done Abba, which released in 2009.
Drawn from the innermost recesses of its extraordinarily versatile, profound, and prolific creator’s mind, somewhat like the water that emerges from Boman Irani’s well at the end of this delicately-drawn satire on babu-giri and red-tapism, Well Done Abba is a little sparkling gem of a film.
Its humour, warmth and tenderness are not as easily obtainable as in Benegal’s previous comedy Welcome To Sajjanpur, which was far more readily and immediately engaging. Well Done Abba takes longer to settle and sink into our satiated sensibilities. Long parts of the film describing the Hyderabadi protagonist Armaan Ali’s (Boman Irani) close encounters with babu-giri and the bewildering maze of the bureaucracy (somewhat like Pankaj Kapoor in the serial Office Office...

Shabana Azmi reminisces with Subhash K Jha in this interview about the experience of making Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. (2007), which also featured the brilliant cast of Boman Irani, Abhay Deol, Minissha Lamba, Kay Kay Menon, Raima Sen, Karan Khanna, Sandhya Mridul, Vikram Chatwal, Ameesha Patel, and Dia Mirza.
This was your first film for your son Farhan Akhtar’s production house?
I had a ball doing Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. My kids (Farhan and Zoya Akhtar) are involved with it. I’ve a very small part.
You had never been paired with Boman Irani before?
Boman plays this Christian Goanese guy. I play this Muslim woman. He plays a brash man. My character is more genteel. I love my look in this film. I kept telling the clothes designer Arjun Bhasin that after this film, he won’t be getting any more assignments. All of us are so atrociously dressed by design.

One of the more promising and consistent Indian filmmakers of this generation, Shoojit Sircar is most well-known for his steady, yet lightly feathered, bereft melodrama exploration of the human condition. Heavily leaning into the documentary style of storytelling, Sircar’s filmmaking is characterized heavily by unobtrusive use of the camera, hard cuts, and a vignette-heavy narrative that manages to encapsulate both the individualism as well as the collective nature of any political or historical event. It’s an extraordinary filmography, which is as remarkable as it is unassuming, simply because of the consistency of the quality of Shoojit Sircar’s movies.

Mumbai, June 5 (Ians) The trailer of their upcoming series “Badtameez Dil”, which was unveiled on Monday, presents the journey of a girl who believes in old-school romance and a guy who is an ardent believer of modern-day love.
The trailer, which is 1 minute and 35 seconds in length, follows the opposing ideologies of its leads essayed by Ridhi Dogra and Barun Sobti. While Ridhi’s character sticks to conventional methods of love, Barun’s character has some twisted ideas about love as his characters says in the trailer, “Shaadi usse karo jisse dosti ho aur sex usse karo jo hot ho”.
About “Badtameez Dil”, Ridhi said: “Classic romance is such a feel-good emotion to capture on the screen and ‘Badtameez Dil’ has done that job perfectly! It portrays the problems that a lot of couples face these days while falling in love, but they fail to resolve these differences and opt for the easy way out.

Intro: Beginning this week, we bring you another weekly column that dwells on the intricacies of Bollywood and the people who make it. Sometimes funny, sometimes informative, always downright forthright!
Hashmi's Adhuri filming!
This is epic. Not jumping on to Balan's lips must have been a frustrating time for Emraan Hashmi in Hak. It's his haq, you see, of smooching every heroine he is paired up with. In a few films he has also flaunted this 'license' he has been supposedly given by over-enthusiastic directors and ever-willing heroines with some cheesy lines. Every time in Hak, he has gotten dangerously close to Vidya Balan's lips, and then like a good boy, gone for a traditional hug.
Surely, he must be feeling that this was adhuri shooting.
Balan is big when it comes to lip-locks
Speaking of Vidya Balan, she is not averse to kissing, or is in anyway a bad kisser.

But that's the whole beauty of doing something so opposed to my personality. I'll try to remain myself and not give in to the temptation of acting like I am someone else." Minissha Lamba is honest enough to admit she was relatively unoccupied. "I've cleared my decks for the next 2-3 months. I don't know how long I'd last. But I do know I am prepared for whatever happens. I know I am not really cut out for this. But it's always interesting to be the odd one out.

Zilla Ghaziabad
Starring Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi,Paresh Rawal,Arshad Warsi, Chandrachur Singh,Ravi Kissan, Divya Dutta.
Directed by Anand Kumar
Rating: ** ½
Wasseypur’s gangs never had it so good. Seeing the glorious guttural outflow of gore blood bullets and profanities in Zilla Ghaziabad one could safely(?) assume, Wasseypur is safe. So is the other release this week. Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che is as far removed from its Friday competition as flying kites are from speeding bullets.
To be fair one can’t compare two films as disparate in intent, purpose tone and treatment as Kai Po Che and Zilla Ghaziabad…except for the fact that somewhere down the line as we approach the crux and the core, both films say the same thing.
If you want to survive in this cut-throat world you have to recognize your own weaknesses and strengths. Not that I see the hurried...

Arshad Warsi believes he will never be comfortable doing bold scenes on the big screen but says he made an exception for the kissing scene with Vidya Balan in “Ishqiya” because he and wife Maria Goretti were confident about Vishal Bhardwaj.
And had he been in ‘serial kisser” Emraan Hashmi’s shoes, Maria would have left him long ago, said the actor, who made a mark with his role as the lovable Circuit in the two “Munnabhai” roles.
“Like any other wife, she would not like to share her husband with anybody. So let us put it this way, if I was in Emraan’s shoes, Maria would have left me long time back. If I had to do a whole lot of smooching scenes, she would have dumped me,” Arshad told Ians.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has been making waves in the film industry ever since his stellar performance in Kahaani and Gangs Of Wasseypur. The maverick actor who has been recently on a film signing spree will now be seen sporting a new look for his role in Sanjay Sharma's Black Currency. The film which seeks to expose the business of counterfeit notes features Nawaz playing a shrewd, manipulative tycoon.
However, unlike the conventional filmi tycoons that are portrayed as the suave, slick and stylish jetsetters, Nawaz will be seen as a petite yet sharp individual. The film which is scripted by Sharma draws inspiration from his own life when he was handed back a fake Rs. 500 note that was being deposited in a bank. Taking a cue from the incident and also integrating other cases of fake notes, Sharma had woven a script that has been three years in the making.

Awards season is in full swing and the Colour Screen Awards took place last week in B’town.
With the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone in attendance we had to check out the red carpet to see what the stars where wearing.
While some got it oh so right many stars got it wrong. Scroll down to see which stars where looking hot and which where not!
We always know when we see Vidya Balan on the red carpet she is 99% of the time going to be wearing a silk saree. The actress knows what style suits her and sticks to it, even if it does get a bit repetitive. Vidya looks nice but I am not a fan of the colour choice of sari, it is aging and she should have opted for a brighter colour. Hubby Siddharth Roy Kapoor looks ok in his suit.

Arshad Warsi and Minissha Lamba’s physical intimacy on the set of ‘Zila Ghaziabad’ has created stir on the set of the film. While shooting a scene, Arshad and Minissha’s proximity cross the limit and the actor with very ease touched Minissha’s breast. The scene shows Minissha in lehenga-choli holding a gun and aiming at Arshad while the actor holds her breast through her blouse.
