Some Call Green Arrow a Batman Copycat, But One Big Thing Sets the Two DC Heroes Apart
Image
Green Arrow may have started out as little more than a Batman copycat, but new series writer Chris Condon has found the perfect way to differentiate the Emerald Archer from the Dark Knight. Both characters are rich playboys who moonlight as costumed crime-fighters with high-tech gadgets, but their individual personalities couldn’t be any more different.

In an interview with Aipt Comics, Condon talks about the approach to the character in his new Green Arrow series. “I think he’s always kind of been a little bit more of a radical,” Condon says of Oliver Queen, explaining, “just in terms of what he does and how he does things.”

Condon goes on to explain how the revamp of the character by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams informed everything that came after it, with Ollie’s personality as a rabble-rouser remaining intact throughout the decades:

That kind of goes back to...

Green Arrow's New Costume Fixes an Age Old Design Flaw
Image
Warning! Spoilers for Green Arrow #18!Green Arrow has an iconic costume - one of the best in superhero comics - but how he keeps his identity secret has never really made much sense. While Green Arrow often wears a hood or a classic domino mask, the lower half of his face is completely exposed. While this isn't an issue for characters like Batman, Ollie has a distinctive beard that has always made hiding his identity hard, but his newest costume fixed this problem.

After working with Amanda Waller, Green Arrow is back in his city and doing his best to protect the people he cares about. This return also comes with a brand-new costume, and it's a fantastic update to his iconic look. Not only does Ollie have a cool cloak now, but most importantly, he's wearing a face mask that completely obscures his iconic blond beard, as seen in Green Arrow #18 by Chris Condon,...

EC Comics Have Risen From The Dead In New Series
Image
Controversial EC Comics, which warped young minds with tales of horror and suspense and spawned spinoffs in film and TV, has returned with original stories in a new anthology series.

Oni Press has licensed the EC Comics banner and last month released its first issue, Epitaphs From the Abyss. The second, Cruel Universe, arrives this month with a focus on science fiction stories.

The new series is a partnership between Oni Press and the family of William M. Gaines, the original publisher of EC Comics, who died in1992.

EC Comics brought the world series like Tales from the Crypt and Weird Science.

Epitaphs from the Abyss #1 has stories by Brian Azzarello,...

Green Arrow Finally Has a Better Batmobile Than Batman
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Green Arrow #5!Batman and Green Arrow have had a friendly rivalry for years, often exacerbated by Green Arrow seemingly copying many aspects of Batman's tactics. While the characters are distinct now, Green Arrow originally hewed close to Batman's style, with an Arrowcave base and riding around town in an Arrowcar. Now, Green Arrow has finally outdone Batman.

Green Arrow's surprising advantage over Batman is shown in Green Arrow #5 by Joshua Williamson, Sean Izaakse, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Romulo Fajardo Jr and Troy Peteri. While trying to escape from a group of criminals, Green Arrow and his older self are driving right towards a cliff... when the Arrowcar suddenly launches itself into the air.

Green Arrow Artist Defends 1 Ridiculous Trick Arrow
Image
DC's Green Arrow is known for his various trick arrows, but one arrow in particular has remained controversial among some readers, who deem it too silly. Recently, famed Green Arrow artist Phil Hester mounted a defense for the divisive boxing glove arrow, relating how he thinks it’s an essential part of the character.

Appearing at the Dragon Con 2023 panel “Green Arrow: A Look Back at the Hester & Parks Era,” Phil Hester discussed bringing back the boxing glove arrow he and Kevin Smith re-introduced in their Green Arrow run.

“We wanted to bring back trick arrows,” Hester said, before discussing their reasoning: “The boxing glove arrow was a reminder of what Green Arrow should be. It should be fun.”

Human Torch's Darkest Redesign Is the Reinvention Marvel's Most Overlooked Hero Needs
Image
In the 1990s, Marvel commissioned a series of artists to reconceptualize some of its most well-known heroes – as well as some of its more overlooked, including the original Human Torch. One of the publisher's oldest characters, the pre-Fantastic Four Human Torch was reimagined as part of Marvel's Timeslip initiative, turning the character into a bringer of fiery vengeance.

Artist Phil Hester was commissioned to redesign the original Human Torch, which he did by taking the character all the way back to his Golden Age roots.

This version of the Human Torch, unlike his Earth- 616 counterpart, was designed to catch on fire, as a way of bringing fiery retribution to the Nazis.

The online auction is being held on September 27, and will be directed by Bodnars Auctions. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Kubert School's scholarship fund. The school was founded by legendary cartoonist Joe Kubert, and teaches students cartooning and graphic art. The sale of Smith's art collection will help to support the comic artists of the future.

Green Arrow Has the Best Answer For Why Batman Doesn't Kill the Joker
Image
The Joker has been captured time and again by Batman, but many fans — and even other DC characters — have asked why Batman doesn't just kill Joker to be done with it. Green Arrow already answered this question a long time ago.

Gotham City is one of the most dangerous cities in the DC Universe, and one of the biggest reasons for that danger is the Joker. Joker has a body count in the hundreds at the very least, and every time he shows up it's a near-apocalyptic event for the city and its many vigilantes. This violence has led some fans and other DC icons — including, famously, Red Hood — to ask why Batman doesn't just kill the Joker. While Joker has been defeated and captured dozens upon dozens of times, he always returns, and he seems to be getting worse as time goes on. But instead of permanently ridding the world of this menace,...

Onomatopoeia Cosplay Honors the 1 Villain Who Truly Beat Batman
Image
One of the most unsettling foes ever encountered by Batman is coming to life in a brilliant cosplay session. One talented cosplayer pays tribute to Onomatopoeia, a villain that did the impossible and get a win over the Dark Knight.

Batman has gone up against a number of strange foes, but few are as bizarre as Onomatopoeia. The villain first appeared in Green Arrow #12 by Kevin Smith and Phil Hester and is known for his unique gimmick. Onomatopoeia has a tendency to speak the sound effects of various things going on around him. In addition to his unusual idiosyncrasies, Onomatopoeia is a serial killer that specifically targets street-level vigilantes like Green Arrow or Batman. The character was prominently featured in the miniseries Batman: The Widening Gyre, which saw Onomatopoeia gain Batman's trust by disguising himself as another vigilante.

The New Origin of The Batcave is One of DC's Dirtiest Secrets

Warning: Spoilers for Gotham City: Year One #6Batman's Batcave has long been one of the most iconic locations in DC canon. Over the years, the Dark Knight's base of operations has had many looks and purposes. DC's latest addition to the Batcave's origin, however, gives this iconic headquarters a history so dark that it paints Batman's lair in an entirely new light.

Gotham City: Year One #6 by Tom King, Phil Hester, Eric Gapstur, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles shows the conclusion of Slam Bradley's investigation into the case of the stolen Wayne baby, Helen. In the issue, Slam confronts Constance and Richard Wayne about their roles in the abduction and accidental death of the Princess of Gotham, as well as the subsequent cover-up. Superman & Lois Just Stole A Green Arrow Villain The Arrowverse Ignored
Image
Warning: The following contains Spoilers for the Superman and Lois season 3 premiere. The premiere episode of Superman and Lois season 3 featured the surprising appearance of the Green Arrow villain Onomatopoeia, who never appeared on Arrow or in any Arrowverse series. Superman and Lois season 3 already promised to be full of villains, featuring its versions of popular Superman adversaries Lex Luthor and Intergang leader Bruno Mannheim. This made the introduction of Onomatopoeia all the more surprising, particularly given the way the character was changed from the comics to make them a more formidable threat.

Superman and Lois season 3, episode 1, "Closer," also brought back the villain Atom-Man, who was one of the first supervillains Superman ever faced. Atom-Man had been upgraded considerably, however, now possessing real superpowers in addition to his power armor. Atom-Man was seemingly gunned down before he had a chance to finish Superman off, but a quick scan with...

Superman & Lois is finally back as season 3 premiered this week, taking place a few weeks after season 2. The season 3 premiere wasted no time getting into its next arc. One of the new players that arrived was DC Comics' Onomatopoeia, who is a seldom-seen Green Arrow villain in DC Comics. Riddler Hates One Justice League Hero Way More Than Batman
Image
There is no question Batman has some of the darkest villains in the entire DC Universe, and ones mostly if not completely focused on defying, outsmarting, or destroying him. But Batman's smartest villain, Riddler, has made it known that he specifically hates Green Arrow far more than the Dark Knight.

Green Arrow has his own host of criminals he's had to deal with while protecting Star City, the likes of Malcolm Merlyn, Brick, Onomatopoeia, and plenty of others. And conversely, Batman's own iconic rogues gallery of villains have aimed higher than domination of Gotham City alone. Some have gone farther in branching out--like Joker currently traveling America, causing chaos on a far larger scales. But it's something else for Riddler, who did fight Green Arrow a handful of times, amounting to more than enough to leave Riddler with a lasting hate for the arrow-shooting Justice Leaguer.

Batman’s Origin is Completely Redefined By Crime Alley’s History
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Gotham City: Year One #4!The secret history of Crime Alley puts a darker spin on the renowned origin of Batman. Gotham City: Year One #4 reveals what gave the iconic location it's nickname and what that means for the Dark Knight.

In many ways, it's the place that Batman was truly born. On a night that was meant to be a fun outing for the Wayne family, tragedy struck when Thomas and Martha took their son Bruce cut through an alley after leaving the Monarch Theatre. There, they were confronted by the small-time hoodlum Joe Chill who killed the Waynes and left Bruce an orphan. That night would haunt Bruce for the rest of his life, inspiring him to travel the world and gain the abilities he'd need to become the ultimate protector of Gotham. Since that awful night, Crime Alley is regarded as one of the...

DC’s First Hero Is Responsible For Gotham’s Downfall
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Gotham City: Year One #4The city of Gotham has suffered for years, and it seems that may be because of DC's very first hero. Gotham City: Year One #4 reveals how hardboiled detective Slam Bradley inadvertently put Batman's beloved city on a road to hell.

There are few locations in the DC Universe that are as miserable as Gotham. The city is not only overrun with crime, it's also home to some of the most sinister villains to ever put on a costume. The city's only saving grace from the evil forces that haunt it are the city's Dark Knight and the Bat-Family, though even they can only do so much against rogues like Joker and Two-Face. But the problems Gotham face go back to even before Batman was on the scene, with organized crime putting fear into every good-natured citizen unfortunate enough to live in the dark metropolis.

Green Arrow's Most Heroic Quality Also Makes Him a Terrible Lover
Image
As one of the few non-powered superheroes to make it onto the Justice League, Green Arrow is without a doubt one of the best heroes in the DC Universe, but the very instincts that earned him a spot on the League also make him a terrible lover.

Green Arrow has had many love interests over this time in comics, but none is more famous than Black Canary. Oliver Queen and Dinah Drake's relationship has been almost as iconic as that of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. Additionally, Oliver has saved the universe plenty of times himself, recently being the one to help rally the Justice League to fight back against Pariah's forces in Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. That's not to mention the fact Green Arrow also has the most important job in the Justice League by protecting the other members' identities. But despite all of this, his instincts...

Even Batman Roasted His Biggest Justice League Ripoff
Image
Even Batman knows that a fellow Justice League hero has ripped off his persona, as The Dark Knight once called out Green Arrow to his face. In a hilarious moment between the two DC Comics heroes, Batman questions whether Oliver Queen has ever had an original thought in his head after he mentions the Emerald Archer's former vehicle, home base, and plane all stole one of his most iconic signature naming trademarks.

In Green Arrow #5 (2001) by Kevin Smith, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Sean Konot, and Guy Major from DC Comics, Batman investigates the mysterious return of Green Arrow, who has come back to life after previously dramatically dying in the Zero Hour crisis. In order to prove that he's the real Oliver Queen, Green Arrow suggests to Batman they visit his old stomping grounds. However, with Queen's memory essentially stuck ten years in the past, he makes references to his "Arrow-Plane,...

Green Arrow & Black Canary Don't Belong Together, & DC's Heroes Know It
Image
Green Arrow and Black Canary's relationship is every bit as iconic as Superman and Lois Lane, but when it came time for their wedding, it seems not a single person in the superhero community believed that their marriage would last.

Dinah and Oliver's relationship has lasted for decades at this point, and while they've certainly had their ups and downs, there's no doubt that they belong together and love each other deeply. Despite Oliver and Dinah being destined to be together, as shown when Green Arrow and Black Canary met their daughter from the future, their relationship has its fair share of detractors within the DC Universe.

Green Arrow is DC's Scariest Vigilante, Not Batman
Image
When it comes to deciding who the scariest hero in DC Comics is, most fans would answer Batman, but really it's Green Arrow. Bruce Wayne has built his entire crime-fighting reputation on being terrifying to the criminals he fights, but when it comes down to it, Oliver Queen is actually way scarier.

The DC Universe can be a rather terrifying place, with literal Gods of Evil lurking beyond the reaches of space, and an entire array of alien races of varying degrees of benevolence. In some universes, there are horrifying zombie viruses running rampage while in other universes, the heroes of the world turn out to be their worst villains. Despite how terrifying the greater scope of the universe is, street-level heroes can be just as scary. It's already known that Batman will go to insane lengths to scare villains, but at the end of the day, he is mostly just scaring them.

Green Arrow Has The Most Important Job On The Justice League
Image
The Justice League is full of heavy hitters, from an Amazonian princess to an alien with godlike powers, to a Dark Knight, yet surprisingly the most important Justice League member of all is actually just a man with a bow, Green Arrow.

Time after time, the Justice League has been able to fight back super villains and literal tides of darkness trying to destroy either the world or all reality itself. It's clear that every member of the Justice League has an important job to do. Superman is the muscle and global protector, Green Lantern helps with relations with alien races and is a protector on a galactic level, and Batman is the planner. This isn't even to mention Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, or the Flash. Everyone has a role to play, and they do it well, which is why it's so surprising that the most important job of all...

DC Reveals Batman Is Gotham's Original Sin, But Not in The Way Fans Think
Image
Contains Spoilers For Gotham City: Year One #2!Gotham City has often been a portrait of misery, crime-ridden and destitute, and one series is revealing just how involved Batman was in making it that way. The city wasn’t always a hellhole, but the actions of the mysterious "Bat-Man" might change it for the worse forever.

Nothing is more emblematic of Gotham City’s ruin than the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne, victims of circumstance. There’s always been an implicit feeling in Batman comics that his parent's death were the straw that broke the camel’s back in cementing Gotham’s horrible reputation, and it was certainly the moment that Bruce Wayne was forced to grow up. However, the newly released Gotham City: Year One paints a picture of a different Gotham, approximately fifty years ago. The city is still rain-drenched, but crime is down, at least for now.
