Return To Sender Review
Let’s get this out of the way immediately – Return to Sender, a so-called “thriller” that exists solely to capitalize on the icily serene beauty of star Rosamund Pike, is no Gone Girl. Artless, queasy and agonizingly dull from first frame to last, it’s more akin to a particularly ugly Lifetime Original Movie than that delectably vicious cult phenomenon or really anything with which you’d expect to see a star of Pike’s caliber associated.

And yet, director Fouad Mikati somehow landed the Oscar nominee – whose deer-in-headlights terror on screen could easily have been elicited by her realization that Return to Sender will always lurk on her IMDb page. She plays dedicated nurse Miranda, who tends to her patients with practiced precision but shows none of the same enthusiasm for her love life. Miranda, unfortunately, is a pancake-flat character, made ever flatter by Patricia Beauchamp and Joe Gossett’s howlingly awful script.

Nick Nolte, Rosamund Pike, and Shiloh Fernandez in Return to Sender (2015)
'Return to Sender' Clip Starring Rosamund Pike | Exclusive
Nick Nolte, Rosamund Pike, and Shiloh Fernandez in Return to Sender (2015)
Miranda Wells (Rosamund Pike) talks about her potential new job as a surgical nurse in our exclusive clip from Return to Sender, arriving in movie theaters August 14 from Rlj Enterainment. Miranda's colleague Gloria (Camryn Manheim) can't understand why she would want to transfer into the surgical nurse field. While Gloria says she can handle patients "puking and pissing" on her, she can't fathom the "revolting" nature of surgery. This scene takes place long before this thriller really picks up the pace.

Miranda (Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl) is a dedicated nurse, an exquisite cake maker and an impeccable friend. But when she agrees to a blind date and the wrong man comes to her door...her perfect world is shattered by a brutal assault. Even after her attacker, William (Shiloh Fernandez, Evil Dead), is convicted and locked away for the crime, Miranda can't overcome the fear and trauma...

Return to Sender movie review: yes, return to sender
For almost the entire running time of this movie, we have no idea what it is about. What is it trying to say? What sort of story is it trying to tell? I’m “biast” (pro): love Rosamund Pike

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

In my head I’m calling this film What Is This I Can’t Even: The Movie. It works at least as well as the blandly generic and not even really apropos Return to Sender, which describes a tiny section of the second act that then resolves itself and has no further bearing on the story. In fact, the bearing it does have on the story hardly makes any sense at all, not on the level of plot, character, or theme. Not that the plot, characters, or putative themes make any sense on a whole-movie level,...

Woody Allen at an event for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Exclusive: FilmNation has begun talks at the Afm on the upcoming untitled Woody Allen project, one of several new titles to emerge on the eve of the market.

Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone star in the story that Allen shot on the east coast over the summer about an angst-ridden philosophy professor who starts an affair with a student.

Thus far no Us distributor is attached although regular Allen distributor Sony Pictures Classics must be regarded as the front-runner.

Meanwhile, buyers are also buzzing about Retribution, which marks the reunion of Al Pacino and Brian De Palma for the first time since Carlito’s Way in 1993. The pair had previously collaborated a decade earlier on Scarface.

Relativity International is understood to be in early talks with acquisitions executives on the story of a hitman and a cop who will go to any length to stop a Philadelphia child prostitution ring.

The project...
