It's impossible to avoid controversy in this day and age. Fans will deem elements of any media problematic, even in anime. However, the difference between most anime and a select few is that these problematic elements can often be overlooked. A few minor flaws don't automatically make a series bad or not worth watching.
However, for a certain few anime, the controversy they face is justified. Some series are flawed from conception, unable to escape the problematic elements that define them. From romanticizing toxic relationships and explicit fan-service, to problematic age gaps and racism, some anime just don't know when to draw the line. For anime like these, it's probably best to just know what they are so that they can be avoided altogether.

Despite the dry spell, a producer associated with the Dragon Ball series has assured fans that the franchise will continue. This confirmation comes after the conclusion of Dragon Ball Daima and the ongoing hiatus of the Dragon Ball Super manga series.
Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, a highly regarded artist and animator for the Dragon Ball franchise, was recently interviewed at Made in Asia Spring 2025 in Brussels, Belgium, in early March. The interview was conducted by social media user @/vondbz and translated by @/Venixys on X (formerly Twitter). Nakatsuru was asked what off-screen event he would love to elaborate on in a future Dragon Ball anime project. It’s an interesting question, as working on an original and lore-heavy scene would be done without the involvement of Akira Toriyama, who passed away in March 2024.

Bardock, Goku’s father, has undergone major changes since his first appearance in the Dragon Ballfranchise was in Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku. Originally portrayed as a hardened warrior doomed by his Saiyan pride, Bardock’s characterization shifted significantly when Dragon Ball Super: Broly introduced a gentler, more introspective version. This rework surprised longtime fans, especially since Bardock’s original depiction was highly praised for adding depth to Goku’s lineage.
Despite the dramatic shift, Bardock’s redesign was not arbitrary. While Akira Toriyama had previously acknowledged the original Bardock, the decision to reshape his character stemmed from a deeper creative intent, according to @Venixys on X. By looking closely at the changes, it is possible to see how Toriyama’s vision evolved and why this new Bardock fits better into Dragon Ball’s ever-expanding mythology.

Weekly Shonen Jump editor, Kosuke Yahagi, has shed light on why Naruto gained more popularity overseas compared to One Piece.
According to Yahagi, who served as Naruto’s main editor from its first chapter to Chapter 402, the manga was more in demand in the west because One Piece required greater reading comprehension.
The complexity of One Piece‘s storytelling compared to Naruto‘s was discussed in detail by Yahagi during an interview in 2019, which was also attended by other former Jump editors.
Yahagi’s analysis of One Piece & Naruto’s storytelling:
Yahagi revealed that before launching Naruto, he thoroughly analyzed One Piece to understand what made it so compelling.
He noted that One Piece builds its world like an RPG, with each new arc introducing a fresh setting, a clear objective, and character development that propels the story forward.

Among the diverse figures within the anime world, there are two characters that are often compared and pitted against each other due to their similar physical appearance, unparalleled charisma, and role of reliable mentors: Satoru Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen and Kakashi Hatake from Naruto. However, a surprising statement shared by Gege Akutami suggested that Kakashi’s character never crossed the mind of the Jujutsu Kaisen creator during Gojo’s creation.

Not only this, Akutami further revealed that while Gojo is often compared to Kakashi, Gojo is nowhere near the level of the Naruto character in terms of powers, personalities, and narrative significance. This admission has fueled discussions about why Akutami believes this and what this says about the evolution of anime mentorship.

Warning: Spoilers for Batgirl #3!Some Batman fans don't realize that the League of Shadows and the League of Assassins are two separate entities. Ra's al Ghul always had the League of Assassins, but when adapted for the screen in Batman Begins and later Arrow, the organization was renamed the League of Shadows. In hopes of synchronizing the comics with adaptations, DC introduced the League of Shadows in the comics as a separate group, furthering confusion.
Batgirl #3 by Tate Brombal, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Spicer, and Tom Napolitano brings the League of Shadows back into DC Universe canon. Cassandra Cain reluctantly teams up with Lady Shiva, and after taking refuge with her Order of Shiva, she discovers that her mother is running the current iteration of the League of Shadows.
Some fans may assume that the League of Shadows is just the League of Assassins under a different title, like in DC's movies and TV shows.

As a Saiyan Warrior, Raditz from Dragon Ball Z is one of the strongest anime characters ever. Raditz is super-humanly strong, can create laser beams, and fly. Despite his power, Raditz is still considered one of the weaker Saiyans and is not invincible. Several powerful individuals from other anime, like Saitama or Koro-sensei, could challenge and possibly defeat Raditz.
Raditz is extremely overpowered by normal standards. That being said, he is not the only overpowered anime character. Many characters from other shows have seemingly impossible powers and abilities that could give Raditz a hard time. Furthermore, a few of them could win against Raditz under the right circumstances.

In Mashasi Kishimoto’s magnum opus, Naruto Uzumaki is considered to be the strongest Shinobi to ever live. With immense chakra, the power of all the nine-tailed beasts has helped him to earn this rightful status. However, none of this would have been possible if he had not met Jiraiya-Sensei at the hot springs.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has numerous times proven its status in the Big Three of shonen anime. Luffy’s journey to become the King of Pirates has captivated generations of kids with the famous One Piece treasure still being a mystery. After the Wano Arc, Luffy achieved the title of Emperor of the Sea, and the mangaka perfectly showcased each Straw Hat member’s iconic moments.
Along with Luffy’s Yonko title, Oda-sensei unknowingly reignited the long-standing debate between Zoro and Sanji fans. Akira Toriyama, the legendary mangaka who created beloved series like Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball, is respected throughout the world. There’s no bigger proof of this than when even the Government Officials of China and El Salvador declared nationwide mourning on account of the creator’s passing.
The reason he’s so revered is that he literally kickstarted the careers of other mangakas such as Masashi Kishimoto, Eiichiro Oda, and Yuki Tabata.

2019’s Joker was a major departure from the character’s comic book roots, as instead of pitting him up against his arch nemesis Batman, Todd Phillips went for a character study of Arthur Fleck. While this direction was certainly a risk, as it lacked the flare that CBMs are renowned for, this paid off massively with Joker becoming the first rated-r film to cross the billion-dollar mark.

Created by Masashi Kishimoto, the Naruto series is well-known for its multidimensional characters. In any long-running series, character popularity can be a double-edged sword. While some characters become instant fan favorites, others struggle to find their place in the hearts of the fans.
