The Inside Out franchise may not be finished just yet. Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen recently talked about the film at the Critics’ Choice Awards, hinting that there’s plenty of potential for another sequel.
‘This world is so rich. You can go down so many roads,’ Nielsen told. ‘There are so many emotions to explore. There are further stages in Riley’s life. You never know.’ That sounds promising, but before you get too excited, he also admitted that there’s nothing officially in the works yet.
‘There’s nothing in progress right now,‘ he said. But with how well the last movie performed, a third film seems like an obvious next step.

Meg LeFauve, one of the writers on 2015’s Inside Out, which went on to nab an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination and won for Best Animated Feature, returned to pen the sequel with Dave Holstein, based on an original story by LeFauve and Kelsey Mann. Mann directed, taking the reins from the original’s co-directors and her fellow co-writers Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen.
The sequel’s script picked up a now 13-year-old Riley (the voice of Kensington Tallman), who is experiencing a parade of new emotions that play out in her brain’s headquarters.

Pixar's "Inside Out" took us inside the head of an 11-year-old girl named Riley as she coped with moving across the country and coming to terms with the complicated feelings that come with beginning a new chapter in life. The animated movie delivered a story that pulled at everyone's heartstrings and provided us with plenty of laughs through the anthropomorphized emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling).
Nearly 10 years later, we returned to Riley's mind as she turned 13 years old and suddenly found herself feeling all sorts of new sophisticated emotions while making new friends at a summer hockey camp. "Inside Out 2," which introduced new emotions like Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adele Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), became a gigantic smash hit, crushing records left and right and cementing "Inside Out" as a...

Disney and Pixar previewed the first trailer for the upcoming “Inside Out” television series, called “Dream Productions,” at D23.
“Thank you for making ‘Inside Out 2’ the number 1 animated film of all time,” Pixar’s Pete Docter said onstage at D23 in Anaheim. “If you love the film as much as we do, i’ve got some great news.”
Docter said the new series, coming in 2025, is set between the first and second installments of the film — it’s an in-betweenquel.
The show is set in a studio where Riley’s dreams are made every night — on time and on budget. Some memories need extra processing, so they are sent to Dream Productions, and when Riley falls asleep, we see the film crew making the dreams like a film set.

Spoilers are ahead for Inside Out 2's ending.
The Inside Out series could explore more of Riley's formative life stages, with sequels focusing on things like romantic relationships and young adulthood. Inside Out 2 sees Riley dealing with panic attacks, strained friendships, and stress, which means Inside Out 3 can build on that foundation. Potential future stories for another Inside Out movie could highlight first love, first loss, and everything in between.
Pixar's Inside Out series tackles several big moments in its protagonist's life, but future titles could explore even more of Riley's formative life stages. While the original movie chronicles Riley's move from Minnesota to San Francisco, Inside Out 2 centers on puberty. Inside Out 2's cast of characters grow to accommodate Riley's teenage emotions, adding Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) to the high schooler's arsenal of feelings.

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has now become the highest grossing animated film ever, surpassing Frozen 2. More on it below.
Inside Out 2 has been a much needed hit for Pixar and it’s also a bloody good film. Shortly after the film’s release, it became the highest grossing film of 2024 and it’s now the highest grossing animated film in history, as reported by Variety. Not too shabby.
The Pixar sequel shattered the record formerly held by Disney’s Frozen 2, released in 2019. Inside Out 2, released in June to rave reviews, only took six weeks to claim the title. Its global box office takings hover at around $1.46bn. That’s a billion, not million. It also took the sequel only 19 days to break the magical billion dollar limit. In comparison, Frozen 2 grossed $1.45bn during its theatrical run.

Disney is jumping for Joy. That’s because the studio’s emotion-laden “Inside Out 2” has surpassed “Frozen II” to stand as the highest-grossing animated film in history.
After six weeks of release, “Inside Out 2” has generated $601 million domestically and $861 million internationally, bringing its global tally to a staggering $1.46 billion. “Frozen II” was bigger than the very successful original 2013 film and collected a mighty $1.45 billion during its theatrical run in 2019.
In terms of global ticket sales, “Inside Out 2” just overtook “Barbie” ($1.446 billion) as the 13th-biggest movie of all time. Among its many records, the Pixar sequel is the fastest animated film to cross the $1 billion benchmark, having done so in 19 days. It’s also the highest-grossing movie of 2024 to date, and the only one this year to join the billion-dollar club.

Inside Out 2 is more realistic than any horror movie, depicting anxiety as a villain capable of taking over our minds. The sequel delves deeper into the complexities of anxiety, showing how it can hijack control and create terrifying scenarios. Despite a temporary resolution, the presence of Anxiety in Riley's mind leaves room for relapse, reflecting the ever-present threat.
Inside Out 2 is 2024's most successful family-friendly movie yet when I watched it, I found it to be one of the most profoundly unsettling and outright terrifying theatrical experiences of my life. From Nicolas Cage's sinister giggling villain in Longlegs, to the raucous horror comedy of Abigail, there is a healthy audience appetite for explicitly scary movies. Joy must be working overtime in the minds of Disney’s higher-ups, because Inside Out 2 continues to make money. Heading into Fourth of July weekend, the film has stayed at number one and looks to drop off small again, even with challenger Despicable Me 4. But before the film released, fans had to deal with one of the new emotions introduced in the film: anxiety. And that’s because Disney Pixar was messing with the formula that made the first film so wonderful by switching out the voices for two of the central character.
The first Inside Out from 2015 focused on Joy (Amy Poehler) and her opposite Sadness (Phyllis Smith), two of the emotions living inside the head of pre-teen Riley. The two learn to deal with one another as Riley moves with her parents from Minnesota to California, which upsets her otherwise calm life.

Inside Out 2 did not feel like a necessary addition to the Pixar canon when it was announced. Why make a sequel to one of the most original, ingenious solo outings in animation history and potentially tamper with the reputation of greatness? Money sure felt like the motivating factor, and Pixar has cashed in to the tune of nearly $1 billion and counting after two-plus weeks at the box office. But jumping inside Riley’s head of emotions for a second time was actually a courageous and rewarding payoff for fans worldwide as they were treated to one of the best sequels in Pixar’s history.
What makes a great Pixar sequel though? It’s not the first time the company has successfully returned to the same universe for another go-round, but Inside Out 2 certainly created a new blueprint for future sequel outings. Let’s look at how the movie...

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 stayed atop the domestic box office chart in its third weekend with a hearty $57.4 million, enough to scare off Paramount’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One after a closer-than-expected race.

Inside Out 2 introduces new Emotions like Envy and Anxiety to mirror the complexities of growing up. Anxiety takes center stage, showing how over-planning and irrational thoughts can hinder rather than help. The sequel tackles the harsh realities of adulthood, emphasizing the loss of pure joy as one grows older.
Pixar's Inside Out 2 is a direct sequel to the original Inside Out (2015). This film had a lot to live up to because many Disney fans believe Inside Out is one of the best animated movies ever made. Like most Pixar movies, Inside Out delivered a powerful message in a colorful package that would appeal to children and adults. To have a powerful impact like the original film, Inside Out 2 needed to focus on a more mature topic while still keeping it colorful and fun.

Inside Out 2 has become the highest-grossing movie of 2024 domestically, surpassing Dune: Part Two in just eight days. The sequel introduces new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, and Ennui, adding depth to the emotional journey of Riley as a teenager. With a $200 million budget, Inside Out 2 crushed its opening weekend with a $155 million take, thanks partly to incredible reviews.
Inside Out 2 just crossed an incredible milestone, and it still has weeks left in its run. As the follow-up to 2015's Inside Out, the sequel introduces new emotions, including Anxiety, Envy, and Ennui. With a $200 million budget, it needed an incredible box office take to bring profitability, and it absolutely smashed its opening weekend with a $155 million take domestically, which can be partly attributed to the Inside Out sequel's incredible reviews.
Its second weekend has proven to be even more rewarding than the first, as Inside Out 2 has officially become 2024's highest-grossing movie domestically.

Pixar's Inside Out 2 exceeds expectations, introducing new emotions and exploring Riley's teenage life in a compelling narrative. The sequel's success proves it's more than a cash grab, adding depth to Riley's character and paving the way for future storytelling opportunities. Amy Poehler's vision for Inside Out sequels that follow Riley through life's stages offer up promising and fresh story opportunities.
Although I was cautiously optimistic and healthily skeptical ahead of Inside Out 2's premiere, the Pixar sequel's success makes me even more excited about Joy actor Amy Poehler's five-movie plan for the series. When it hit theaters in 2015, Inside Out exceeded all of my expectations, even by Pixar movie standards, so the bar was exceptionally high for 2024's follow-up. In the original film, viewers get a glimpse inside the mind of preteen Riley Anderson, who moves with her family from rural Minnesota to San Francisco, and is piloted by personified emotions,...

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 continues to sizzle at the box office, where it earned a record $30 million Wednesday. It is also the highest gross for Juneteenth since the date became recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
Excluding movies opening midweek, the film scored the biggest Wednesday gross of all time for an animated movie, and — just as impressive — the third-biggest of any film only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($38 million) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ($32.2 milllion).
And when including movies opening on a Wednesday, Inside Out 2 rests at No. 12 on the list of top Wednesday earners, not adjusted for inflation.
The animated tentpole has now earned $235.4 million domestically and a huge $203.3 million overseas for a global total of $438.7 million through Wednesday.

Friendship replaces Family Island as Riley's biggest emotional focus in Inside Out 2. Teenage Riley prioritizes friendships over family in the sequel, reflecting a common adolescent feeling. As Riley's core memories change, her personality islands and external relationships also shift, illustrating Inside Out 2's ability to make abstract concepts more accessible.
A sequel to Pixar's 2015 hit, Inside Out 2 has bucked 2024's disappointing box-office trend, garnering a whopping $295 million globally over its opening weekend. Not only is the Inside Out follow-up positioned to be the 2024 movie that dethrones Dune 2, but it's also the best theatrical opening weekend since 2023's Barbie, which went on to gross $1.446 billion. While Inside Out 2 has struck gold, both financially and narrative-wise, by revisiting the inventive world inside Riley's mind, the Pixar sequel has also prompted viewers to wonder about some key differences between the Inside Out films.

Inside Out 2's Envy and Ennui were different from what their names suggest, as Envy was more like admiration. Ennui was presented as sarcasm, not boredom, showing complexity and working well within the movie. Envy and Ennui, despite not being named accurately, worked perfectly in the more complex world of Inside Out 2.
Inside Out 2 saw Joy and the rest of Rileys emotions meeting new emotions, but two of them were quite misleading, yet they still worked perfectly. Back in 2015, Pixar brought one of its most complex yet fascinating stories in Inside Out, directed by Pete Docter. The ongoing struggle to elevate animated features to the same level of best-picture recognition as live-action films will undoubtedly resurface by year’s end. This time, the spotlight will be on Pixar’s highly successful sequel, “Inside Out 2,” a film that could bring joy and success amid a dark cloud hovering around Hollywood studios.
With debut director Kelsey Mann taking over from Pete Docter, the second installment follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) during her teenage years. Along with her core emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear, and Disgust — she begins encountering new emotions, notably Anxiety (Maya Hawke).

There’s a lot to unpack psychologically in “Inside Out 2” (currently in theaters), which adds more emotional complexity to the franchise. This provided Pixar with imaginative visual opportunities along with a lot more screen time for teen Riley (Kensington Tallman).
Which means puberty literally takes a wrecking ball to Riley’s emotional stability, signaling the arrival of Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). Those plans changed when they thought about why it is that people get anxious, at which point the character was changed to be coming from a place of love.

Anxiety to the rescue! Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” an animated adventure that spotlights apprehension among other emotions, scored the biggest box office debut of the year with $155 million domestically and $295 million globally.
It’s a huge win for theaters (ticket sales have been lagging way behind 2023) and Pixar (which has struggled to restore its box office touch since Covid). Those results far exceeded expectations and notched several opening weekend records in the process.
Outside of the U.S and Canada, “Inside Out 2” enjoyed the biggest start in Mexico with $30.2 million, followed by Korea with $14.9 million, the United Kingdom with $13.9 million, Germany with $8.1 million and the Philippines with $6.7 million. The movie has already collected $140 million overseas — and it’s yet to open in major markets like France, Italy, Spain, China and Japan.
The PG-rated “Inside Out 2,” which cost $200 million to produce, arrives nearly 10 years after the original animated adventure.

Where to begin in describing the emotions that Hollywood and theater owners — not to mention Pixar and its parent company Disney — are likely feeling over the stunning start of Inside Out 2 at the box office. (Hint: Sadness isn’t one of them.)
In a joyous comeback for Pixar, the tentpole opened to a massive $155 million domestically over Father’s Day weekend — well ahead of an expected $90 million — to secure the second-biggest animated launch of all time for a three-day weekend, not adjusted for inflation. It also did historic business overseas, where it opened to a record $140 million for a global total of $295 million, the biggest opening of all time for an animated film in like-for-like markets when accounting for exchange rates.

Heading into the weekend, the follow-up film to 2015’s cerebral hit “Inside Out” was projected to collect $80 million to $90 million.
The second “Inside Out 2” also connected at the international box office with $140 million, enough to surpass “Frozen 2” ($135 million) as the biggest overseas animated opening of all time. Turnout was especially strong across Latin America, where it landed the second-biggest opening of all time behind Disney’s Marvel epic “Avengers: Endgame.” Globally, the movie has grossed $295 million to notch...

Eagle-eyed fans noticed potential LGBTQ+ representation in Inside Out 2's trailer, making them hope for more inclusive storytelling in the sequel. Inside Out 2's Riley isn't openly queer, continuing Pixar's trend of lackluster LGBTQ+ representation, as seen in movies like Onward and Lightyear. Pixar's short film Out centers on a gay protagonist, but the studio needs to bring that representation to its feature films too.
When Pixar announced that its next film would be yet another sequel, I was skeptical. Even though 2015's Inside Out is one of Pixar's best movies, I wasn't sure it needed a follow-up, especially given the studios' hit-or-miss track record with franchises. Fortunately, the sequel to the Oscar-winning, $858.8 million box office hit is really good. Not only does Inside Out 2 boast impressively high Rotten Tomatoes scores, but the film, which expands on the first outing's roster of personified emotions, more than justifies its existence.

Anxiety in Inside Out 2 is portrayed in a relatable and nuanced manner, drawing on real-life experiences to show its role as a protective feeling. Maya Hawke's performance as Anxiety has been praised for its authenticity and relatability, resonating with audiences of all ages. Inside Out 2 addresses tough emotions in a way that makes them feel less alienating and stressful, serving as a force for good in emotional storytelling.
Inside Out 2 follows Riley from the first film as she navigates adolescence. Now a teenager, she encounters a new set of emotions alongside the familiar Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. New to Riley are Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Shame (Paul Walter Hauser), and Ennui (Adle Exarchopoulos). In a recent interview with ComicBook, Hawke discussed how she drew on her own real-life experiences to bring Anxiety to life on screen.

Don’t be afraid to catch feelings. Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office opening day of the year so far, earning a spectacular $62 million across Friday and preview screenings from 4,440 locations. It will have no trouble blasting past the $82.5 million debut earned by “Dune: Part Two” to overtake it as the biggest domestic opening of 2024. It’ll also be the first release to notch a nine-figure domestic opening in nearly 11 months — the last one to get above $100 million was “Barbie” last summer.
It’s a welcome bounce back for Pixar Animation Studios, which has struggled at the box office in recent years after Disney sent films like “Turning Red,” “Soul” and “Luca” directly to Disney+ during the Covid pandemic, a decision that Pixar head (and the director of the original “Inside Out”) Pete Docter says “trained” audiences to watch the studio’s features on streaming.

Pixar's "Inside Out 2" arrives in theaters this weekend, and while it doesn't quite measure up to the greatness of the original, it will still reduce you to tears. The sequel takes us back into the mind of Riley, who is now 13 years old and starting to experience the complications of growing up. That means coming to terms with some new emotions, and she's not the only one struggling. Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Fear (Tony Hale) have to deal with the fact that they're starting to lose control of Riley's mind when Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) show up and make things much more difficult to manage.
However, during the long development process for "Inside Out 2,...

Move out of the way, Sadness: “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office previews of 2024.
Disney and Pixar’s latest animated outing grossed $13 million in Thursday previews domestically, plus $22.3 million internationally. The family-friendly sequel is projected to launch between $80 million and $90 million this weekend.
A debut on the higher end would give “Inside Out 2” the biggest opening of the year. Warner Bros. currently holds the top two spots of 2024 with “Dune: Part Two” at $82.5 million and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” at $80 million.
For reference, “Inside Out 2’s” $13 million in domestic box office previews outpaced last year’s “The Little Mermaid” ($10.3 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($10.8 million) and “Toy Story 4” ($12 million). It falls a bit short of recent animated superhero sequels like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million).
Outside of the U.S. and Canada, “Inside Out 2” did particularly well in Mexico,...

Inside Out 2 is on fire at the Friday box office after starting off with a joyful $13 million in Thursday evening previews, well ahead of expectations and putting the movie on course to become the first title of 2024 to clear $100 million in its debut.
In fact, traffic is so strong that the Pixar and Disney title is now expected to open to at least $130 million in North America, one of the top five openings of all time for an animated film, not adjusted for inflation. By Friday night, rival studios were throwing out estimates of $140 million or more, but Disney and Pixar are taking a more circumspect approach until they see a final number of the day (Friday’s haul looks to be as much as $60 million, including previews).
Fellow Pixar release Incredibles 2 is the crown-holder for top animated opening ($182.7 million), followed by Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie...

Spoilers for "Inside Out 2" follow.
Something remarkable happens near the end of "Inside Out 2": a character has an anxiety attack. Is this a first for an animated Disney film? It just might be. This isn't the first animated film to depict a panic attack — the surprisingly excellent 2022 film "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" did it, and did it well. But for the House of Mouse, this feels like a monumental moment. Not only does "Inside Out 2" showcase an anxiety attack, but it does so in a realistic, harrowing way. As someone who suffers from anxiety and depression, seeing such a moment depicted in a major movie aimed at kids felt almost seismic, as if I didn't know such an action was permitted. I imagine that seeing this scene will upset some younger viewers, but it might also open their eyes to thoughts and feelings they're grappling to understand.
