The show has been the subject of simmering bullying and misconduct concerns for months, and the allegations finally hit boiling point this week, prompting the BBC to fire a professional dancer and make tweaks to Strictly’s production regime. The...

In one of the most moving moments in the show’s six-year history, painting conservator Lucia Scalisi was presented with a 19th century artwork of the Madonna and Child, which guest Maria Kirk explained had an extraordinary story behind it.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight ‘hired to write’ first Star Wars movie since Rise of Skywalker
Image
The first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker has a brand new writer attached.

Damon Lindelof, the writer behind Lost, The Leftovers and Watchmen, was originally hired to co-write the forthcoming release alongside Justin Britt-Gibson. However, it was reported that the pair left the project in February.

Instead, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will now write the film.

Variety reports that the film will be announced at Star Wars Celebration in London this April.

The Independent has contacted Lucasfilm for comment.

Knight’s previous acclaimed credits include Eastern Promises, Locke and Spencer.

However, he’s also received his fair share of criticism due to projects Burnt, Locked Down and the BBC’s new verson of Great Expectations, which begins on Sunday (26 March).

Other people to have either walked away from planned Star Wars projects or had their films shelved, in recent years include Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Db Weiss,...

Reverend Richard Coles has been flooded with messages of support after sharing his “frustration” at the quiet announcement of his departure from Radio 4.

The TV personality will present his last show as the host of Saturday Live this weekend (25 March), as the show is relocated to Cardiff.

Despite Coles having co-hosted the weekly show since 2011, his departure from the BBC show was announced on Tuesday (21 March) with little fanfare.

In an interview with The Guardian, Coles shared his disappointment that the news hadn’t been shared publicly sooner, saying that he hadn’t had a single message from his supporters about his exit.

“I haven’t heard from any listeners yet,” he said. “I don’t think it’s been on Twitter or anything. Perhaps people just think, ‘Oh well.’”

Eddie Izzard says trans people will get through ‘tough times’ as she blames right-wing for ‘stirring things up’
Image
Eddie Izzard has said that she is “sure” transgender people will make it through this period of “tough times”.

The comedian, who recently announced that she also goes by the name Suzy, spoke out against the notion that there is a real “culture war” taking place over trans issues.

Appearing on Lorraine on Thursday (23 March), Izzard said that “the tough time that trans people are going through” was reflective of the struggles that gay people went through in previous decades.

Back then, she said, trans identity wasn’t discussed as “we were non-people, we were toxic people, we were other”.

“This idea of culture wars, I think it’s the right-wing just stirring things up,” she told host Lorraine Kelly. “I think 95 per cent of the country, maybe the world, are saying ‘live and let live’.

“This is just the time we have to go through to get to the best time,...

‘It’s good to be back’: Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best addresses his return to Star Wars universe
Image
Ahmed Best is overwhelmed by the fan reaction to his Star Wars return.

In episode four of The Mandalorian’s third season, the actor, who made his debut in the franchise in 1999, made a surprise appearance.

Viewers were left in disbelief by his presence and immediately began heaping praise upon his performance as Jedi master Kelleran Beq.

The reason why his appearance has rocked the fandom so much is because Best is the star who provided the voice and motion-capture for Jar Jar Binks in Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

The role of Jar Jar Binks was heavily criticised at the time, and Best found himself at the centre of a racist backlash from toxic franchise fans.

In the wake of his Mandalorian appearance, Best wrote on Instagram: “Gratitude! Good to be back. There is so much to say and share. It’s going to take a couple of days.

Race Across the World fans delight in show’s return despite one major change
Image
Race Across the World returned to screens last night (22 March), with fans taking to social media to praise the series despite one major change.

The adventure-themed reality show, which has moved from BBC Two to BBC One for its current third series, sees five teams attempt to travel as far as they can without smartphones, internet access or credit cards, and armed only with the cash equivalent of the airfare to fly the route.

While the teams usually travel across several countries, this time, they are racing 16,000km through the second largest country on the planet – Canada. This is because the series was filmed last year, when the world was still opening up after the pandemic.

The five pairs must race across the breadth of Canada, passing through seven checkpoints, taking them from the Pacific coastline, to the edges of the Arctic and the shores of the Great Lakes, to...

Poubelles rendezvous: French protests spark Emily in Paris memes over rubbish-filled streets
Image
In Netflix’s Emily in Paris, the French capital is a world full of golden pastries, bouncy berets, and a glittering river Seine. But in reality, this week the city’s streets are host to some 9,500 tonnes of rubbish.

Paris’s refuse collectors are two-and-a-half weeks into a strike that has seen rotting bin bags piling high in the city.

Workers in numerous sectors, from transportation to energy, have been holding intermittent strikes since January over President Emmanuel Macron’s divisive bill raising the retirement age from 62 to 64.

The situation has led to numerous TikTok users posting memes that highlight the contrast between Emily in Paris and reality.

One video sees a young woman in a mackintosh and a black scarf posing for a selfie in front of a heap of rubbish, with the Emily in Paris soundtrack, Ashley Park’s “Mon Soleil”, playing in the background.

Another sees a...

‘Genuine highlight’: Snoop Dogg plays viral Just Eat advert during London show to fans’ delight
Image
Snoop Dogg gave a moment to his popular Just Eat advert during his recent performance in London.

On Tuesday (21 March), the rapper performed a headline concert at the O2 Arena, featuring a wide selection of his hits throughout the years.

As well as being delighted by tracks such as “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Who Am I (What’s My Name)”, some audience members were surprised by the inclusion of a particular song from his discography: his jingle for the food delivery app, Just Eat.

Snoop, real name Calvin Broadus Jr, provided the music for the British company’s advertising materials from 2020 to 2022.

Despite the unlikely combination of a rap icon and a delivery service seeming bizarre at the start, the advert quickly became popular.

During the star’s show on Tuesday, the ad appeared on screen and played in full, in a nod to its popularity with British audiences.

Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland has domestic violence charges dropped
Image
Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland was today (22 March) cleared of domestic violence charges.

Adult Swim, the network behind the animated series, announced it was severing ties with Roiland earlier this year after it was reported that he was facing charges in connection with a 2020 incident.

Kimberly Edds, spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney’s office, confirmed in a statement (per Variety): “We dismissed the charges today as a result of having insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Roiland shared a statement about the verdict on social media with the one-word caption: “Justice.”

“I have always known that these claims were false – and I never had any doubt that this day would come,” he wrote. “I’m thankful that this case has been dismissed but, at the same time, I’m still deeply shaken by the horrible lies that were reported about me during this process.

J Cole reveals he started smoking cigarettes aged 6: ‘I was young and fearless and trying to be cool’
Image
US rapper J Cole revealed the ridiculously young age he started smoking in a new interview.

The “No Role Modelz” star discussed the habit on Tuesday’s (21 March) episode of the “Lead by Example With Bob Myers” podcast, hosted by the president and general manager of the Golden State Warriors NBA team.

“At 6 years old, I was smoking cigarettes regularly around the neighbourhood,” Cole, who grew up in North Carolina, told Myers.

“I was always hanging around the older kids in the neighbourhood that [my older brother, Zach] was hanging around and they were smoking. And I was young and fearless and trying to be cool.”

“So, it was like, ‘Oh, y’all smoking. Let me see that.’ And, of course, we’re all out there [with] young parents, long leashes. Not that [my mom] knew I was doing this,” Cole continued.

The now-38-year-old said he was busted when his older brother caught him smoking and...

‘It’s been frustrating’: Reverend Richard Coles shares sadness at ‘rushed’ BBC Radio 4 departure
Image
The Reverend Richard Coles has admitted feeling “frustrated” after news of his departure from Radio 4 was quietly announced five days before his final show.

The member of the clergy and TV personality has hosted Saturday Live on the station for 12 years, but will present his last show on Saturday (25 March), following the BBC’s decision to move the weekly programme from London to Cardiff. Both Coles and his co-host Nikki Bedi were given the option to relocate with the show; Coles declined the offer, while Bedi will continue in the role.

The news of Coles’s departure was announced on Tuesday (21 March) night as part of a press release about this weekend’s programming. A major announcement was not made as the BBC was in talks with Coles about his involvement in future projects on Radio 4.

However, speaking to The Guardian, Coles shared his disappointment that the news hadn’t...

Mark Gatiss: ‘Christmas is the perfect time for ghosts’
Image
It’s Christmas Eve, and you’re as ready as you’ll ever be. Presents under the tree? Check. Turkey in the fridge? Check. Mince pie for Father Christmas and a carrot for Rudolf on the hearth? Check. The thinning of the veil between this world and the next, allowing unquiet spirits to walk the Earth and the long shadows in the moonlit, frosty lanes to shift and darken with things not of this world? Check, check and check.

Because while Christmas might traditionally be the season of goodwill, comfort and joy, it is also very much the time of ghosts. And no one appreciates that quite as much as Mark Gatiss.

Gatiss is one of our most recognisable TV actors and writers, making his name with the surreal comedy of The League of Gentlemen and cementing his reputation with a starring role in Sherlock, his TV take on Dracula,...

BBC Greenlights Documentary On Europe’s Only Mormon Training Center
Image
The BBC is to profile the only Mormon training center in Europe via a documentary on its religion and ethics slate.

The Mormons are Coming [working title] will follow three young missionaries as they arrive at the center in Chorley, Lancashire, which prepares missionaries from the U.S., Europe and Australia for work in the UK.

The mostly 18-25-year-olds spend three months of training and work in the field, facing up to the realities of missionary life as they prepare for being away from home for up to two years.

Peggy Pictures’ documentary was one of three TV shows unveiled on the BBC’s religion and ethics slate alongside Humza Arshad – Finding Forgiveness [working title] and My Life at Christmas with Sally Phillips.

In the deeply personal former, the YouTube star, whose cousin was brutally attacked by men who are no longer in jail, sets out to understand how faith can lead to forgiveness.

Sir Trevor McDonald and Floella Benjamin to host Countdown for 40th anniversary
Image
Sir Trevor McDonald and Floella Benjamin will guest host Countdown as part of the show’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

The quiz show was the first programme to air on Channel 4 when the broadcaster launched in November 1982 and remains the channel’s longest-running series.

To celebrate the milestone, four broadcasters will each take on a week-long hosting stint alongside resident lexicographer Susie Dent and mathematician Rachel Riley.

Benjamin will be up first, appearing on the week commencing 31 October, with TV judge Rob Rinder joining Dent as the guest in dictionary corner.

She will be followed by celebrity vicar and Radio 4 presenter Reverend Richard Coles the week after. Former BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker will appear with him alongside Dent.

The next week (beginning 14 November), McDOnald will return to host the show. McDonald last sat at the helm in September 2021 as part of Channel 4’s Black to Front project, in which...

Victoria Coren Mitchell to show us How To Be Bohemian for new BBC Four documentary
Victoria Coren Mitchell is taking a closer look at the history of bohemians for BBC Four.

Three-part documentary series How To Be Bohemian with Victoria Coren Mitchell will journey from 19th century Paris to '60s Soho and focus on influential bohemian figures like Oscar Wilde.

Stephen Fry, Grayson Perry, Will Self, A A Gill, John Cooper Clarke, Rev. Richard Coles, Maggi Hambling, Molly Parkin and performance artist Jonny Woo will all appear in the series.

Coren Mitchell said: "Bohemians confuse me tremendously. I don't know whether to find them exciting and inspiring, or annoying and threatening. Possibly all four at once. From these mixed feelings, I know I must be a bourgeois.

"But I've never been fully immersed in Bohemian circles before. I'll be interested to find out whether I end up running into their open-minded embrace, or running screaming away."

BBC Four's channel editor Cassian Harrison added:...
