Jon Bernthal recently made his official debut as The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Daredevil: Born Again, but the actor told Entertainment Weekly that he initially refused to reprise the role.

Before Daredevil: Born Again underwent a creative overhaul, Bernthal was asked if he would be interested in joining the series. However, he disagreed with the original plans for the character. “Ultimately, I didn’t see it. I didn’t see the version of Frank, and what they wanted from Frank [didn’t] really make sense to me and I thought would not appeal to the fans and wouldn’t be congruent,” Bernthal said. “It was not something I was really interested in doing. So we had to walk away.“

Deadline reports that Jeff Daniels has joined the cast of the third season of Shrinking, Apple TV+’s acclaimed comedy series starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford.

Co-created by Segel, Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, Shrinking follows grieving therapist Jimmy (Segel), who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives, including his own. Harrison Ford stars alongside Jason Segel as Dr. Paul Rhoades, one of Jimmy’s colleagues at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center, who has Parkinson’s disease.

Daniels will play Jimmy’s father in a guest-arc for the new season. In addition to Segel and Ford, the main cast of Shrinking includes Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley.

According to Disney, the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again has assembled some superhero-level views on the streaming service. The studio announced today that the highly-anticipated series has garnered 7.5 million views in its first five days, making it the biggest streaming debut of the year on Disney+ (so far). A view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

This number puts Daredevil: Born Again ahead of the launches of Goosebumps: The Vanishing, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Paradise, but it’s slightly behind the last live-action Marvel series on Disney+, as Agatha All Along drew 9.3 million views during its first week.

Walton Goggins isn’t a big fan of snakes, so obviously, he would be the one to suffer a snake bit during the production of The White Lotus season 3.

“I don’t just have a phobia – it’s like a missing link when it comes to snakes,” Goggins told Jimmy Kimmel. “I am terrified of snakes — really, really terrified — and there’s something, like, genetically wrong with me when it comes to snakes.” The actor was filming a scene in which his character starts opening snake cages, and he was naturally apprehensive about it, even with a handler giving him the lowdown on each snake.

The premiere of Severance season 2 included a cameo from Keanu Reeves as the voice of an animated Lumon building, but the John Wick actor wasn’t Ben Stiller’s first choice for the role. While speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Stiller said he originally reached out to President Barack Obama to see if he wanted to take the role in Severance. That was not who I was expecting.

“There was one person that I asked before [Keanu Reeves], and he said no: President Barack Obama,” Stiller said. “I didn’t ask him in person. I knew someone who knew his lawyer. So I wrote an email to him, and like two days later, I get an email back from President Barack Obama, saying, ‘Hey Ben, big fan of the show, love Season 1, can’t wait for Season 2. Don’t think I have time in my schedule to make this happen.’“

Stiller joked that he wasn’t convinced.

Only Murders in the Building has been one of my favourite shows of recent years, and it’s been getting better and better with each season. Production on the series’ fifth season recently began, with Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez returning as Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mabel Mora, respectively. Deadline has reported the first major addition, with Keegan-Michael Key joining the cast of Only Murders in the Building season 5.

As you might expect, plot and character details are being kept under wraps at this time, but Key is said to be playing a recurring role in the new season. Michael Cyril Creighton will also be returning as Howard Morris, the cat-loving resident of the Arconia who has become more invested in the amateur sleuths with each season.

The Has Fallen series, which was spun off of the Gerard Butler movies — Olympia Has Fallen, London Has Fallen and Angel Has Fallen — will be getting a new season as confirmed by Canal+. The debut season, which was titled Paris Has Fallen, brings a lot of what made the movies successful to the show. The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November into January (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. In April, it was confirmed that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 was a sure thing, then filming began in November. The first season’s star Anna Sawai is back for season 2, and while speaking to the press after winning a SAG award for her role in Shōgun, Sawai teased that the new season will take the show’s characters on “a huge journey.’

Netflix's newest political thriller Zero Day made its highly anticipated premiere today, but is a rare television appearance from Robert De Niro enough to please critics? Apparently not, as the series has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with just a 45% score, with the consensus being that, despite an interesting premise, Zero Day fails to deliver an engaging story over the course of its six-episode run.

"Utterly predictable, and the supporting characters hardly develop," said M.N. Miller from FandomWire, who adds that this causes Zero Day "to lead to a contrived plot that undercuts much of the suspense" with a "rushed" resolution. That's pretty harsh. "This could have been Netflix's successor to House of Cards," commented Alex Maidy from JoBlo's Movie Network, who says that instead it:

Disney's latest animated series might have drawn some controversy recently, but that didn’t stop Win or Lose from debuting on Rotten Tomatoes with a score that clearly shows it's a home run. Premiering yesterday, Feb. 19, on Disney+, the Pixar series' Rotten Tomatoes score sits far from the bleachers at 89%, and with six episodes still left to go in the first season, that number could go even higher.

"Win or Lose greatly benefits from its diverse tapestry and stories. It feels real and genuine in its attempts to illustrate a close-knit community," said Ferdosa Abdi from Screen Rant. Alex Maidy from JoBlo's Movie Network had much the same to say in his review, adding:

The film version of John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan is shaping up. It was reported late last year that Sienna Miller will star alongside the former star of The Office in the upcoming film adaptation, which is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Now, Deadline is reporting that four more actors have joined the Tom Clancy-inspired thriller.

Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge, JJ Feild and Betty Gabriel have all joined Jack Ryan along with Miller. Gabriel is also a former cast member who appeared in the third and fourth seasons of the series. Amazon will be producing in association with Paramount Pictures and Skydance. Deadline reports that Ben Stiller is set to star in The Band, an hourlong dramedy series in development at HBO. Although Stiller has made plenty of small screen appearances over the years, this would be his first regular role in a TV series since The Ben Stiller Show in the ’90s. He also played the recurring role of Tony Wonder on Arrested Development and himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The Band has been created by Sarah Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers, co-creators of Search Party. The series “offers an inside look at the music industry centered on Oscar (Stiller), a pop impresario and talent mogul beset by scandal who is tasked with forming a new act in order to save his career – and perhaps his soul.” The new act will be a boy band, with Stiller’s character sharing a few similarities with Simon Cowell.

Deadline reports that Mayor of Kingstown season 4 has added several cast members, including Edie Falco (The Sopranos), Lennie James (Fear the Walking Dead), and Laura Benanti (The Gilded Age).

The zany conspiracy comedy Operation Taco Gary’s is set to launch at the European Film Market this year, according to Deadline. The film rights to the comedy has recently been acquired by Archstone Entertainment and the company will be taking it to the EFM to find international distributors. Operation Taco Gary’s made its debut at the Austin Film Festival and stars Simon Rex, known for Red Rocket and Scary Movie 3, and Brenda Song, who has appeared in The Social Network and will be starring alongside Kate Hudson in Running Point.

Per Deadline, “The story follows conspiracy theorist Danny (Rex) and his skeptical brother Luke (Milligan) as they set out on a cross-country road trip and uncover a global plot that leads them to unassuming fast food chain Taco Gary’s — only to discover it’s the secret base of operations for an alien race intent on taking over the planet.

Our own reviewer Alex Maidy wasn’t very impressed by the Apple TV+ thriller series Surface – you can read his 5/10 review at This Link – but Apple TV+ went ahead and ordered a second season of the show, with Surface season 2 heading for a premiere date of Friday, February 21st. The new season will consist of eight episodes, released on a weekly basis through April 11th. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Marvel Animation’s latest series, hits Disney Plus January 29. The voice cast includes Hudson Thames as Peter Parker, Colman Domingo as Norman Osborn, Eugene Byrd, Grace Song, Zeno Robinson, Hugh Dancy and Charlie Cox reprising Matt Murdock/ Daredevil. When Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was first announced (as Spider-Man: Freshman Year), it was said that the animated series would follow Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving fans a little confused into how it fits into the MCU.

Reactions to the show have hit social media and it’s looking like Marvel has followed up X-Men 97 with another animated smash hit. Our own Alex Maidy gave his impressions as he stated, “@MarvelStudios has done it again with another solid reinventing of @SpiderMan. #YourFriendlyNeighborhoodSpiderMan is a retro animated blast that holds its own with any live action entries in the #MCU.

Given the popularity of Squid Game, it shouldn’t be a big surprise that season 2 of the thriller series would be enormously successful. Well, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, not only did Squid Game season 2 blow away the rest of the competition, but it had the biggest premiere of the entire year with 4.92 billion minutes viewed.

Keep in mind that Nielsen’s streaming ratings only measure U.S. audiences and just cover viewing on TV sets, not computers or mobile devices. The top streaming titles for December 23-29 include:

Streamers usually have their signature title, and Severance is the show that became a hit for Apple TV+. The series is only in its second season and the momentum continues to roll. Deadline is now reporting that the unusual workplace show has generated over $200 million for its streamer Apple TV+. This research comes from the company Parrot Analytics.

The James Wan-produced series Teacup, which is an adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here), had its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in October – and while JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy thought it was a good show (you can read his 7/10 review at This Link), it apparently didn’t connect with as many viewers as Peacock was hoping it would. Variety reports that Peacock has cancelled the show after just one season. Variety notes that “Peacock does not typically release viewership information so one cannot gauge the kind of audience the show found, but it failed to make a dent on the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts.”

Put away the tossed salad and scrambled eggs because the Frasier revival has been canceled after just two seasons. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see more, as even though Paramount+ will no longer produce the show, CBS Studios is still on board for the future of Frasier.

While the future of Frasier is currently uncertain, as you can stream the original Frasier on Amazon Prime Video and Hulu, that could be an indicator that the revival may find a home there as well.

Already a spin-off, Frasier didn’t initially seem worthy of coming back. But the nostalgia wave was strong enough for it to land on Paramount+; it, too, proved to be just what it needed to be: something comfortable for fans of the original to nestle into. Dune director Denis Villeneuve will be returning to Arrakis for a third installment of the sci-fi franchise, but he has said Dune: Messiah will likely be his last journey. However, that doesn’t mean that Warner Bros. isn’t interested in moving forward with more Dune movies. A new rumour from scooper Daniel Richtman claims that the studio has plans for Dune 4 and another Dune TV series, all potentially without the involvement of Villeneuve.

World of Reel has heard the same rumours, adding that Villeneuve is reportedly “irked” by these plans to continue the franchise, with or without him.

Now, Villeneuve has previously indicated that he would be fine if someone else continued the Dune franchise. “I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in ‘Messiah,’ there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books.

As the streaming wars continue with Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Paramount+ and Apple TV+ all vying for viewership supremacy, Apple TV+ is treating audiences in the New Year with a free preview weekend. According to a post on their official social media, Apple TV says, “This weekend, see for yourself. Stream for free Jan 4-5.” The post also features a video that showcases the streamer’s acclaimed original content, including shows like Severance, The Morning Show, Ted Lasso and Shrinking.

The Dexter universe is growing larger by the second. Dexter: Original Sin is currently telling the origins of the young serial killer, but another prequel series could soon follow. Deadline reports that a prequel series revolving around the Trinity Killer (played by John Lithgow in the original series) is still “in development” at Paramount+.

The Trinity Killer prequel series was actually reported to be in condition in early 2023, but it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about it. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and Dexter writer/producer Scott Reynolds will serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer prequel series. Phillips even revealed that John Lithgow has agreed to come back and provide the inner voice of his younger self, much in the same way Michael C. Hall is doing for Dexter: Original Sin.

HBO has given the green light for Dune: Prophecy season 2. The renewal comes just a few days ahead of the first season finale, which will debut on December 22nd.

The series, which HBO produces along with Legendary Television, takes place 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’s ascension. It follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten humankind’s future and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.

Jeremy Renner successfully rallied back from devastating injuries to appear in season 3 of his popular Paramount+ show, Mayor of Kingstown. Our own Alex Maidy found the third season to be rather average in his review where he says, “As great as Jeremy Renner is capable of being, he is not given the material to elevate Mike McLuskey beyond a two-dimensional creation. While the actors are all good, they are limited by a weak story and not enough to warrant investing in. Mayor of Kingstown continues to be a bleak and depressing mirror version of Yellowstone without the soapy entertainment value that we all tune in for. Instead, this is a series that you could miss an entire batch of episodes and still tune in without missing a beat.”

However, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Mike McLusky will once again “take office” after Paramount+ renews the show for a fourth season.

Deadline reports that FX has cancelled The Old Man after two seasons. The series, which is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, stars Jeff Bridges as former CIA agent Dan Chase and John Lithgow as former FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper.

The cancellation largely stems from the multiple delays the series has experienced. Production was first shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When production resumed months later, it had to halt soon after when Bridges was diagnosed with lymphoma and contracted Covid-19 while in treatment. Nearly a year later, Bridges announced he was in remission, and work on the first season was finally completed. Production on the second season was also brought to a halt due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Vince Vaughn is set to return as former detective Andrew Yancy as Apple TV+ has renewed Bad Monkey for season 2.

It’s been more than a month since the first season of the comedy series concluded, but Deadline says the delay in renewing the series was due to “logistics related to relocation.” The first season of Bad Monkey was shot in Miami and the Florida Keys, but will be moving to Los Angeles for the second season. The cast and crew apparently faced a lot of weather-related challenges the first time around, plus Vaughn is based in Los Angeles. The report states that there will be pickup shots in Florida to give it the proper atmosphere.

With Ross, Reznor first won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Social Network, next nabbing it for Soul (alongside Jon Baptiste). However, they would lose out on their Mank nomination. THR reports that Sienna Miller (Anatomy of a Scandal) will star alongside John Krasinski in the upcoming Jack Ryan movie which is in development at Amazon MGM Studios.

The Jack Ryan series came to a close last year after four action-packed seasons. Although plot details for the movie are being kept under wraps, it will once again feature Krasinski as the titular CIA analyst. Miller will play an MI6 agent who is essentially Ryan’s British counterpart. Wendell Pierce (The Wire) and Michael Kelly (House of Cards) are also set to return as James Greer and Mike November, respectively. Andrew Bernstein, who served as an executive producer and director on Jack Ryan’s second season, will direct the movie from a screenplay by Aaron Rabin, who was a co-executive producer and writer on the final season.
