7 Canceled Teen Fantasy Shows That Still Haunt Fans Today
Image
When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

If you still remember teen fantasy shows like The Vampire Diaries and Riverdale that went on for far too long, even after their stories had no steam left, but you might not remember the shows in this list, as they had so much more story to tell, but they were canceled way too soon. Teen fantasy shows were all the rage in the 2010s and that’s why there were so many of them but most of them didn’t hit as hard as The Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf, but that doesn’t mean that the shows that were canceled were not as good or even better then these two shows. That’s the reason why we decided to compile a list of seven great (or underrated) teen fantasy shows that had great potential but were canceled way too soon.

Even ‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunner David Benioff Couldn’t Believe HBO’s Multi Million Dollar Gamble With the Show
Image
When Game of Thrones first strutted into HBO’s office, it wasn’t swinging a Valyrian sword; it came armed with a lowball budget pitch. Yup, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss actually told execs it’d be cheaper than it really was. This was a bold move, considering they were about to unleash dragons, dire wolves, White Walkers, and battle scenes that make Marvel movies sweat.

Say what you will about the finale (we’re still side-eyeing Bran the Broken), but the show was a TV juggernaut, a weekly cultural event with global obsession levels. It turned actors into household names and gave us quotable lines, red wedding Ptsd, and spinoffs like House of the Dragon that still have us hooked. But back then? It was a massive gamble wrapped in a fantasy cloak. Even Benioff now admits he couldn’t believe HBO actually rolled the dice. Luckily, that...

Not Stannis, George R.R. Martin Shouldn’t Have Let Game of Thrones Season 8 Waste the Only Baratheon Who Deserved to Sit On the Iron Throne
Image
Stannis Baratheon may have been the rightful king and heir to the Iron Throne, especially after Robert Baratheon’s death and the questionable legitimacy of his children, but since he died before reaching the final season, there was only one left from the Baratheon bloodline, and that was Gendry.

He’s had one hell of an arc in Season 8—he helped in arming Winterfell for the fight against the White Walkers, reunited with Arya Stark and ended up sharing one of the most controversial love scenes in the show, and of course, Daenerys Targaryen legitimizing him as a Baratheon, subsequently becoming Lord of Storm’s End.

Why Gendry Baratheon deserved to be the king of Westeros

Gendry Baratheon was one of the few honest and good-natured characters in Game of Thrones who made their way to the top without deceit or violence. Sadly, he did not get the ending he...

Game of Thrones Stars Who Were a “Nightmare to Work With” Were Split Up From Filming With Each Other for 6 Years
Image
Game of Thrones served up dragons, undead armies, and more twisted family trees than anyone asked for, but behind the swords and chaos, something oddly wholesome was brewing. Long before Arya was flipping daggers and Sansa was outmaneuvering lords, 12-year-old Maisie Williams met 13-year-old Sophie Turner at a casting session in 2009, and the spark was instant. They didn’t just land roles as the Stark sisters; they practically adopted each other in real life.

From awkward teen years spent on set to stealing scenes and red carpets, their bond only got stronger. Matching tattoos? Check. Finishing each other’s jokes? Constantly. Total friendship goals, even when their on-screen characters were worlds apart.

While Westeros was burning, their sisterhood stayed fireproof. But behind all the love and loyalty, the show wasn’t exactly all hugs and hugs. Some cast tensions quietly simmered for years. And yep, it got bad enough that...

Jodie Whittaker Fights For Justice In Netflix Corby Poisonings Drama Toxic Town — Watch The Trailer
Image
In 2009, the British High Court found Corby Borough Council guilty of negligence for its mismanagement of toxic waste in the Northamptonshire town over a span of fifteen years between 1984 and 1999. Though dubbed "the British Erin Brockovich," the story of the Corby poisonings — and of the band of mothers who courageously confronted and fought their town's leadership for justice as they raised children with toxic waste-related birth defects — is one you likely haven't heard. Until now, that is. In Netflix's new four-part limited series Toxic Town, penned by prolific writer Jack Thorne, the monumental environmental scandal and the landmark case associated with it is dramatised through the lens of the women — led by Jodie Whittaker, Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education), and Claudia Jessie (Bridgerton) — whose love for their kids overcame a Goliath sized display of institutional greed and negligence. Check out the trailer for the drama below:

This sounds terrifying. Toxic Town is a four-part limited series from Broke & Bones and multi-award-winning writer Jack Thorne. 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spiderverse' Daniel Kaluuya Star Got His Start 18 Years Ago

Quick Links Daniel Kaluuya's First Big Role in 'Skins' Where Will Hobie's Story Go Next in the Spider-Verse Films?

With Sony's Spider-Verse trilogy finale indefinitely delayed after its initial March 2024 scheduled release date and the McU's Spider-Man 4 still in production, 2025 is shaping up to be a rather Spider-Man-less year. This is particularly devastating for fans of the animated feature, as Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse was a huge success both critically and commercially, managing to match the standard set by its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The Spider-Verse trilogy boasts a cast full of titans of the entertainment industry, its most recent installment including Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya. His performance as Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk was so impactful that despite clocking in at a grand total of five minutes of screen time, there's a 35-minute analysis of his character on YouTube with 3 million views. ‘Get Millie Black’ Creator on What Mattered Most and If He Wants to Do Another Season
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the season finale of Get Millie Black.]

Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James’ first foray into television with Get Millie Black, from Motive Pictures for HBO and Channel 4 in the U.K., is set in his home of Jamaica. In her first series lead, Tamara Lawrance plays ex-Scotland Yard detective Millie Black who returns to Jamaica from the U.K. haunted by a past that includes her inability to save her brother from their mother and their country’s toxic homophobia. Those same ghosts drive Millie to risk it all — her life, her job, her relationship with both her sister and police partner — to save a little Jamaican boy named Romeo, whom she doesn’t even know, from child trafficking back in the U.K.

James and his writing team tell this story over five episodes narrated by each of the main characters — Millie, Hibiscus, Holborn, Janet and Curtis. The finale, which released earlier in December,...

'Toxic Town' Reveals First Look at 'Black Mirror' Team's New Netflix Series
Image
The production team behind Netflix’s Black Mirror has a new series, Toxic Town, set to arrive on the streaming platform sometime this year. Netflix has released the first image (above) for the four-part limited series starring Jodie Whittaker and Robert Carlyle, which traces the true story of the Corby toxic waste case from the UK.

A town in Northamptonshire, Corby was once home to steel works which were shuttered in 1981. However, the toxic waste left behind contaminated the area, leading to health issues for those who lived there. An investigation and subsequent case found that the Corby Borough Council’s actions in moving the waste led to birth defects, namely, an above-average number of Corby residents born with upper-limb defects. Netflix's series will center primarily on the mothers whose children were affected. Per the official synopsis for Toxic Town:

“The first fifty or so girls … just weren’t right”: Game of Thrones’ Fiercest Female Character Was a Pain in the A*s For Showrunners to Cast
Image
Remember when the whole world tuned in to watch Game of Thrones no matter the time and discussed key plot elements and character deaths before they ruined it all with the final season? Those were some good times. Still, showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff created a global phenomenon based on George R.R. Martin’s novel series.

One of the biggest reasons for Game of Thrones to work the way it did was its incredible casting. From Peter Dinklage to Lena Headey, the ensemble cast brought their A-game to the show and made it work so well. Weiss and Benioff mentioned that they had to search for hundreds of actresses before they zeroed in on Maisie Williams for Arya Stark.

‘Get Millie Back’ Finale: Creator Explains the Different Perspectives That Set Crime Series Apart
Image
“HBO’s latest limited series “Get Millie Black,” from acclaimed writer Marlon James, begins and ends with a haunted house. Not literally haunted, but filled with painful memories of a broken home—an abusive mother steeped in homophobia who kept two siblings apart. For James, having the Jamaica based childhood home of detective Millie Black (Tamara Lawrance) and her sister Hibiscus (ChynaMcQueen) was a good starting point for exploring their relationship, but also the larger things like human trafficking that the series gets into. “A house is home and for a huge part of the show, Millie tries to turn it back into a home,” James told IndieWire. “Well, a home is also where the abuse happens. A home is where the hurt happens. A home is where their first encounter of people at their worst doing horrible things. A house can hide so many things. The house is the...

“I’ve known Maisie since she was 11, 12 years old”: S*x Scene With Maisie Williams in Game of Thrones Was Weird for Joe Dempsie for All the Right Reasons
Image
It’s always fascinating to watch young actors grow up before our eyes, especially when their talent makes such a lasting impression. Maisie Williams, who we first met as the fearless Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, is one of those rare examples.

From her debut in 2011, she had us hooked with her performance, showing a raw, undeniable talent that only grew stronger as the years went by. Her work did not go unnoticed, as she received two prestigious Emmy Award nominations for portraying the iconic Game of Thrones character.

However, Arya’s journey wasn’t without its bumps along the way. The intimacy scene in the final season involving Arya and Gendry, played by Joe Dempsie, caught many off guard.

Dempsie later opened up about the discomfort he felt while filming the scene. The actor admitted that watching Maisie grow up...

HBO's New Crime Drama Series Has Perfect 100% Rt Score
Image
A new HBO crime drama is maintaining its perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, even as more reviews in. The cable network is synonymous with the genre, going back to The Sopranos and its impact on television as a whole. But even in recent years, with shows like Mare of Easttown and Sharp Objects, some of HBO's best shows have blended murder and mystery with more personal stakes and character studies.

This year has been no different, kicking off with True Detective season 4. Led by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, with Issa López as showrunner and director, the anthology's return garnered strong reviews and solid reviews. The Penguin followed that same path, with praise for Colin Farrell, Cristin Miloti, and the fact that creator Lauren LeFranc told a compelling crime drama that didn't necessarily have to exist within Batman's world. One of HBO's newest originals looks to keep the trend going.

‘Get Millie Black’ Review: HBO’s Jamaica-Set Crime Drama Puts a Sharp, Vivid Spin on Familiar Tropes
Image
A disappeared girl. A detective who seeks out the missing because of things she can’t place from her traumatic past. An awkward new partnership; stern and disapproving authority figures; a twist that proves that what had seemed like an isolated case is actually part of something larger.

HBO’s Get Millie Black is a vivid, pulsating reminder of how forcefully the cobwebs can be swept from even the stodgiest of plots if you find a location viewers haven’t tired of, introduce characters who rise organically from that environment and honor those elements as thoroughly as you do the inevitably rising body count and the unfolding conspiracy.

The five-part series marks a smooth transition to the small screen for Booker Prize-winning novelist Marlon James (A Brief History of Seven Killings) and a breakout starring vehicle for Tamara Lawrance. It quickly takes its place in that always-welcome category of off-the-beaten-path...

Addition Review: Love by the Numbers
Image
From the point of view of a bright mathematician’s journey, “Addition” turns out to be an interesting romantic drama that goes deep into the complicated world of mental health, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder. The film is Marcelle Lunam’s impressive directorial debut. It takes Toni Jordan’s famous book into a complex cinematic experience that challenges typical romantic comedy tropes.

At the story’s center is 34-year-old scientist Grace Vandenburg, whose whole life is based on numbers and counting. Teresa Palmer gives Grace a lot of detail as a character. She is a woman whose need to count everything, from food in the store to toothbrush bristles, is her defense and weakness. Her world turns unexpectedly during a seemingly routine grocery store encounter when she steals a banana from Seamus (played by Joe Dempsie) to ensure she has exactly ten. This link will test the emotional walls she has carefully built around herself.

Dune is one of the most celebrated franchises in all of science fiction, and director Denis Villeneuve breathed new life into it with a pair of big-screen blockbusters: 2021’s Dune and this year’s Dune: Part Two. Now HBO is trying to bring the epic grandeur of those movies to the small screen with a new spinoff, Dune: Prophecy, debuting this Sunday at 9/8c. (I’ve seen the first four episodes.) It certainly looks and feels like Dune — minus the big, spectacular set pieces — and it’s buoyed by a pair of sturdy lead performances. But the end result doesn...

‘Get Millie Black’ Trailer: A Former Scotland Yard Detective Tries to Solve a Life-Altering Case of a Missing Child
Image
“Get Millie Black” is exactly what it sounds like: Someone is on the run, but who can stop them?

Well, perhaps the ex-Scotland Yard detective of the title. Tamara Lawrance stars as Millie-Jean Black, an investigator who returns to Kingston, Jamaica to work missing persons cases.

Per the official synopsis, Millie “soon finds herself on a quest to save a sibling who won’t be saved, to find a child who can’t be found, to solve a case that will blow her world apart and prove almost as tough to crack as Millie Black.”

The HBO limited series is created and executive produced by Booker Prize award-winning author Marlon James. Joe Dempsie, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr, and Chyna McQueen co-star.

“Get Millie Black” is produced for HBO and Channel 4 by Motive Pictures. Creator James executive produces along with Jami O’Brien, Simon Maxwell (CEO Motive Pictures), and Leopoldo Gout.

The 5 Worst Episodes Of Game Of Thrones, Ranked
Image
Let's be honest: not every "Game of Thrones" episode is a winner. Sure, the show's first four seasons are basically unimpeachable — and I think a strong argument can be made that, in the aftermath of a particularly bleak fifth entry, season 6 is actually really good — but the drop-off in quality when you get into the show's (frequently derided) later seasons is quite apparent, resulting in some really rough episodes. So, which ones are the absolute worst of the worst?

Because I can't nominate "all of season 7 and 8" for this dubious honor, I made some tough decisions and chose the five absolute crappiest "Game of Thrones" episodes, though there were some contenders I couldn't include here. Basically anything involving the Dorne plotline could have qualified, or anything involving the faceless assassin school in Braavos that beats the spirit out of Maisie Williams' Arya Stark. But installments like "No One" or "Mother's...

10 Iconic Times a TV Show Broke the Fourth Wall, Ranked
Image
Television is a masterful medium and screenwriters often have to rely on a series of complex techniques in order to remain competitive in this bustling industry. Some prefer to ramp up the tension with dramatic scenes, while some creatives enjoy using a wealth of animation styles to push viewers into a completely bonkers world. Yet, breaking the fourth wall seems to be a favored technique among even some of the most established writers and directors.

This technique appears when a character directly acknowledges the audience, either by speaking to them or referencing their presence. Overall, this concept can be used in all different types of genres, giving the audience a stronger bond with the character. However, this technique is incredibly nuanced, and only some shows can pull it off effectively.

‘Addition’ Review: Teresa Palmer Charms and Challenges in Essential Mental Health Rom-Com
Image
“Addition” isn’t so much Will-They-Won’t-They as They-Did-So-What-Now?

That’s familiar territory for plenty of people coping with mental illness in their intimate relationships and a strong subject for director Marcelle Lunam’s charming feature debut. This seriocomic romance is an imperfect meet-cute about living and dating with high-functioning anxiety that won’t work for everyone but may prove essential to the right audience. With a colorful snapshot of a complex narrator, screenwriter Becca Johnstone pulls fresh feeling from author Toni Jordan’s well-celebrated 2008 novel for this winsome movie, which recently premiered at TIFF.

Grace Vandenburg (Teresa Palmer) is a 34-year-old mathematician who is clearly dealing with something when we find her diligently counting produce in the grocery store. After Grace meets the kind and dashing Seamus (Joe Dempsie) at checkout — stealing one of his bananas to make sure she’s buying an even ten — sparks erupt between the...

7 Game of Thrones fan theories that actually came true
Image
Over the course of eight seasons of Game of Thrones, fans had plenty of theories. Some of these theories started with the book fans, while show-first or show-only fans joined in with their theories as the story went on.

Not all these fan theories came true. Jon Snow didn’t kill the Night King, and Jaime Lannister wasn’t responsible for Cersei’s death. However, there were plenty of others that did come true. It’s time to take a look at the big ones that happened.

Let’s start with the most talked-about fan theory that came about in the series. Fans everywhere were sure from the very beginning that Jon Snow was not the illegitimate child of Ned Stark as we'd all been told. Ned just didn't seem like the type to have an affair. The fact that Ned was never...
