Perhaps best known for penning the multi-award winning Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam led feature Green Street, the former Royal Air Force serviceman's literary career began in 1996 when he wrote a book based on his own experiences as a soccer casual entitled, Everywhere We Go. The book examined the culture of football and football hooliganism from the inside and became an instant smash.

A further 16 books have followed and their success has established him as not only one of the UK's most prolific authors but a leading authority on the issue of lad culture. Whilst his novel The Crew continues to top the soccer download chart on both Amazon and iTunes over 11 years since it's initial release in 2000, Brimson is becoming increasingly known for his comedy writing and has tackled various subjects ranging from men and romance to males and their love affair with soccer.

In 2003 Dougie made the move into screen writing first with the critically acclaimed short movie It's a Casual Life and then with his first full length feature, the Hollywood funded Green Street starring Elijah Wood. Following its release in September 2005, the film won numerous awards including: Narrative Jury Prize - SXSW Film Festival Narrative Feature Audience - SXSW Film Festival Best of Festival - Malibu Film Festival Jury Award (feature) - Malibu Film Festival Official Selection - Tribeca Film Festival After a successful worldwide cinema release, the movie went on to sell over 80,000 DVD units during its first week on sale in the UK alone.

May 2014 saw the release of his second feature, an adaptation of his own novel Top Dog. Directed by Martin Kemp the film took the Best Feature award at the British Independent Film Festival as well as the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress awards. Top Dog was also nominated for Best Action Feature at the National Film Awards 2015.

A third feature, the urban revenge thriller We Still Kill The Old Way starring Ian Ogilvy, James Cosmo, Steven Berkhoff and Danni Dyer, was released on 16th December 2014. It has since been nominated for a raft of awards including Best Action Film at The Action Elite Awards 2015.

In 2021, Brimson started his own production company, Red Bus Movies Ltd. Amongst a number of projects in development are The Battle For Stathie Manor, The 45th and In The Know.

    • Trivia
Dougie's screenplay for Hooligans (2005) contains 17 private jokes some of which relate to his RAF career. For example,, the name of the hooligan firm The GSE has its origins in Brimson's trade which was a Ground Support Equipment engineer.

The film was originally written about the rivalry between Tottenham and Arsenal but was changed to West Ham and Millwall at the request of one of the producers.
