[This story contains major spoilers from all six episodes of Eric.]
Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann liken their new Netflix limited series, Eric, to being about a parent’s worst nightmare.
“It is a fable about the cost of losing sight of what is important, and that is costly to the child within us and the children outside of us that we’re responsible for in the world,” Cumberbatch tells The Hollywood Reporter in a joint interview with Hoffman.
Created and written by Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady, The Split) and directed by Lucy Forbes (This Is Going to Hurt, The End of the F***ing World), the six-part series tells the story of Vincent Anderson (Cumberbatch), one of New York’s leading puppeteers and the creator of a hugely popular Sesame Street-esque children’s show called Good Day Sunshine, who struggles to cope with the disappearance of his 9-year-old son, Edgar (Ivan Howe).

This article contains minor spoilers about the Netflix limited series “Eric.”
“I was excited by the prospect that the show was set in the 80s and him being both a Black and queer man, there would be a lot of him that would not be safe to share with the world,” shares McKinley Belcher III about what most appealed to him about his character Ledroit in the Netflix limited series “Eric.” The actor portrays an NYPD Missing Persons officer who investigates the disappearance of one of the show’s central characters, Edgar (Ivan Morris Howe). He says the character allowed him to “explore things that I’ve experienced in my own life” and was “a challenge.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Stitches and Glue, the London-based puppet and creature makers, are the unsung creative force pulling the strings in “Eric.” The Netflix limited series, which explores the ugly underbelly of New York City in the 1980s, contains a cheerful side in the form of “Good Day Sunshine,” a popular children’s TV puppet series.
Benedict Cumberbatch plays desperate puppeteer Vincent from “Good Day Sunshine,” who goes on a quest to find his missing 9-year-old son, Edgar (Ivan Howe), with the help of Eric, a 7-foot-tall blue monster inspired by Edgar’s drawings. Stitches and Glue (run by Paul Vincett and Becky Johnson) were responsible for creating all of the puppets for the show within the series for their portion of the shoot. In addition, they made the full-size animatronic Eric, who performed alongside Cumberbatch.

Who is the real monster in Eric? Is it really the big, blue creature trudging around the streets of ’80s New York? Or is it something more insidious bubbling up inside the man who makes him?
In Eric, the limited series created by BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Abi Morgan, monsters are manifestations of fear. For Vincent, Benedict Cumberbatch’s floundering father, husband, and puppeteer, his demons — nurtured by his childhood neglect and exacerbated by his deteriorating mental health and addiction — manifest as a 7-foot-tall, furry hallucination. His name? Simply, Eric.
First sketched by his 9-year-old son, Edgar (Ivan Howe), Vincent conjures Eric, both in his mind and later in his workshop, to help bring Edgar home after he goes missing on the way to school. In writing the series, Eric was born from Morgan’s love of “magical realism and the imaginative...

Netflix’s Eric about a desperate father battling his own demons on the streets of 1980s New York as he searches for his missing nine-year-old son features Benedict Cumberbatch and a custom-made seven foot puppet, which is visible only to Cumberbatch’s character, the flawed Vincent. Abi Morgan’s six-part series ties together themes of belonging, addiction, loss and police brutality in a familiar setting. It was described as Sesame Street meets Taxi Driver by one British reviewer, although Sister creative chief Jane Featherstone compared it in scope and theme to Steven Spielberg’s Et.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Featherstone said the show is testament to the Chernobyl and This is Going to Hurt studio’s commitment to taking a talent-first approach.

What monsters hide in the darkest corners of our minds?
Eric, the emotional thriller from playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan and director Lucy Forbes, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Vincent Anderson, explores the concept of both physical and psychological monsters. For Vincent, the successful, yet troubled creator of an ’80s children’s show Good Day Sunshine, the brooding monster lurking around every corner is both. The real monster in Eric, the emotional thriller from playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan, isn’t a big, blue beast. It’s something much more sinister.
The series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a puppeteer named Vincent looking for his missing young son in ’80s Manhattan, explores the scourges of structural inequity, the AIDS epidemic, white collar crime, and addiction terrorizing the city.
“This is a drama and a quest of a man who goes in search of his son and goes on that journey deep into himself, but also deep underground into the underbelly of New York’s economic underclass, which has been ignored, abused, and corrupted,” Morgan tells Tudum.

Plot: Vincent, one of New York’s leading puppeteers and creator of the hugely popular children’s television show, ‘Good Day Sunshine,’ struggles to cope with the loss of his son, Edgar, becoming increasingly distressed and volatile. Full of self-loathing and guilt around Edgar’s disappearance, he clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV then Edgar will come home. As Vincent’s progressively destructive behaviour alienates his family, his work colleagues, and the detectives trying to help him, it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.
Review: The idea behind Eric, as depicted in the trailer for the series, is a fascinating concept. A man driven to the edge of sanity after the disappearance of his son bonds with an imaginary monster created by his child to rescue him.

The engaging missing persons story Eric struggles to balance its surreal puppet concept with its intertwining storylines. Stellar performances by Benedict Cumberbatch, Gaby Hoffman and McKinley Belcher III only somewhat keep the show's overstuffed plot afloat. The show addresses timely social issues like the rise in homelessness and police corruption, but much of it feels like a distraction from the central mystery driving the plot.
Crafting an engaging missing persons story is no easy feat, particularly one meant to extend across six hour-long episodes, as is the case with Netflix's Eric. That said, while the show seeks to subvert expectations of its central concept with a surreal manifestation of the titular puppet monster and an ensemble of intriguing characters, it finds itself a little too weighed down by these competing elements to make for a fully engrossing watch.

The new Netflix miniseries Eric asks one of the universal questions: What if Jim Henson was an emotionally abusive drunk, his son went missing in mid-Eighties New York City, the investigation involved crooked cops and a queer nightclub and an underground encampment for the unhoused, and Henson began hallucinating conversations with his newest Muppet as a way to cope with all of this?

Eric releases on Netflix on May 30, 2024.
A six-episode limited series starring heavyweights Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann will be available on Netflix at the end of May. Abi Morgan created and wrote the series. She is known for her incredible work on films like Shame and The Iron Lady and her Emmy-winning writing on The Hour. The series follows a set of parents who are struggling after their son is kidnapped on his way to school.
Set in New York, Eric replicates some of the incredible work of past crime-thrilling series from Netflix, such as Mindhunters, Griselda, and Ripley. The often dark tone of the series brings a nice twist with the introduction of Eric. Eric is a character that Vincent and Cassie’s son Edgar had drawn. The larger-than-life monster is brought to life after Edgar’s kidnapping, bringing a much-needed comedic aspect to the series.
