Disney live-action remakes have had a difficult reputation thus far. Audiences have been mostly negative towards many of these films as they usually don't offer any new or innovative storytelling outside the visual technology they're able to arguably improve upon, although many say these movies don't look much better than the originals in the first place.
However, quite a few of these live-action remakes do provide new and exciting experiences for their audiences. With both Snow White and Lilo & Stitch getting the live-action treatment this year, audiences are looking back at the best live-action films Disney has to offer, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Throughout the years, Disney has released some of the most popular and beloved movies. These movies have iconic characters and scenes that many fans still remember fondly even years after the movie's release. In other cases, some Disney movies are remembered for their iconic opening scenes. And such is the case of many classic old Disney movies that still have some of the best openings in a Disney movie.
Movies like The Lion King or Mulan have incredible opening scenes that many fans still remember fondly. Whether it's because of an opening song or a unique title sequence, or because the opening puts viewers right in the middle of the action, a few old Disney movies knew how to captivate audiences from the start. And while there are many recent movies that also have gripping opening scenes, old Disney movies still have some of the best and most iconic beginnings.

The following contains spoilers for The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, now streaming on Netflix.
It's safe to say that after Netflix picked up The Witcher and produced a live action adaptation starring Henry Cavill, the franchise's fan count increased exponentially. Many were already into the games, comics, and, of course, the writings of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, but Netflix expanded the reach even more.
The streaming service recently released a spin-off anime film that follows Geralt of Rivia, as he takes on a side quest during the events of The Witcher Season 1. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep opens with Geralt and his aide, Jaskier, heading to the small principality of Bremervoord. The anime film ultimately leads to a blood feud between the humans and merpeople. It remixes The Little Mermaid, both in a good way and in a bad way. Unfortunately, the negative outweighs the positive by the time the credits roll.

With a vast range of Disney movies, it can be hard to know which one to go with, especially when looking for a film that is suitable for a young audience. While the studio is known to create movies for the whole family, some wouldn't appeal to children, nor would they be appropriate. However, there's a whole host of films that meet the G certificate rating.
There is a Disney film for every movie fan's taste. Some involve talking animated animals, and others depict a teenager's journey to becoming a princess. Whether with songs or without, the below selection of G-rated movies provides a varied choice for younger viewers.
Updated by Alexandra Locke on December 24, 2024: Disney is known for making movies that are fun for the whole family - including even the youngest members. Disney has a wide selection of Rated G films, but these are among the best.

When it comes to the best Disney movies, The Little Mermaid remains a fan favorite to this day. Kicking off Disneys unofficial Renaissance era in 1989, the release of the classic marked a new age for the studio of critically and commercially successful animated films. Very loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersens original fairytale, the story follows Ariel (Jodi Benson), a mermaid who is in love with Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes) and longs to experience life on land.

The age gaps between Disney princesses and their love interests can vary greatly, but one Disney romance has a much larger age gap than any of the others, by over 1000 years. Disney has recently been moving away from the traditional fairytale romance storylines that many Disney Princess movies revolve around. Many modern and unofficial Disney princesses do not even have a love interest, with Elsa's and Moana's stories focusing on sisterhood and self-discovery. Though traditional Disney love stories are still popular, the age gaps can sometimes be large, which has been getting both attention and criticism.
Snow White, the first Disney Princess, had a traditional romance storyline, but Disney princesses have changed greatly since then. This is partly due to greater attention being paid to the messages that the Disney Princess brand promotes. Modern Disney princess storylines are less likely to revolve around finding romance, with the relationships...

Last night, the remaining DWTS Season 33 contestants presented Disney Night, something fans look forward to every year. Jenn Tran and Sasha Farber performed the Rumba to “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid, adding fuel to the rumors about them.
But when the routine concluded, they didn’t kiss. Instead, Sasha planted a quick kiss on Jenn’s forehead. Many viewers felt disappointed, including judge Derek Hough who said he “shipped” them together.
So why did they opt for a forehead kiss instead?
Jenn Tran & Sasha Farber Wanted To Stay Authentic To The Film
So far, Jenn and Sasha have been dancing around rumors about their relationship. But they insist they actually had a good reason for not kissing onstage.

Disney is set to reimagine yet another classic character with a live-action twist, this time bringing Prince Charming into the spotlight. With Paul King, the visionary behind “Paddington” and “Wonka,” in the director’s seat, fans can expect a fresh and whimsical take on one of Disney’s most famous fairy-tale heroes.
Paul King will also be co-writing the script along with Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker, making it a creative collaboration between familiar names. The film aims to reintroduce Prince Charming—typically a supporting figure overshadowed by the princess—to center stage, giving audiences a deeper insight into his story. The details on plot specifics are still largely under wraps, but it’s anticipated that Disney will try to add more complexity and depth to the character’s well-worn archetype.
The decision to cast Paul King suggests Disney wants to lean into a blend of humor, heart, and family-friendly charm.

A Prince Charming movie is in development at Disney with a director and screenwriters attached. Prince Charming is an archetypical character who is present in many fairy tales, but in terms of Disney princess movies he is most often linked to 1950's Cinderella. While their original animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs featured an unnamed prince who had similar characteristics, Cinderella was the first canonical Disney princess title to use the name Prince Charming, with subsequent princes usually receiving first names including Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid and Prince Phillip in Sleeping Beauty.
Per Deadline, Paddington and Wonka director Paul King is now attached to a Prince Charming movie that is in the works at Disney. This project is said to not tie into Cinderella. Plot details are currently unknown about the script, which will be penned by King, Jon Croker, and King's frequent collaborator Simon Farnaby.

Much like a lot of franchises these days, the new slasher legacy sequel in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise will rely on the original films success in order to make a suitably terrifying return to the big screens. With this in mind, it has now been confirmed that Freddie Prinze Jr. will return to the horror world of I Know What You Did Last Summer in the upcoming follow-up. The star played Ray Bronson in the 1997 film, the blue-collar fisherman boyfriend of Jennifer Love Hewitts Julie James, with both actors previously reprising their roles in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. According to Deadline, Prinze Jr. will return again almost three decades later, starring as Ray Bronson in Sonys upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy movie.

Lilo & Stitch star Billy Magnussen shares his hopes for how the live-action remake will be received. Magnussen is playing the alien Agent Pleakley, who is forced to hunt down Experiment 626, also known as Stitch, alongside Stitch's creator, Dr. Jumba Jookiba. Lilo & Stitch's live-action cast features comedic actor Zach Galifianakis in the role of Jumba, while Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong have been cast as sisters Lilo and Nani Pelekai.

In 1989, The Little Mermaid debuted in theaters, ushering in a bold new era for Disney's animation studio. The film, a loose adaptation of the Hans Christien Anderson fairy tale of the same name, was the first in a string of hits for the House of Mouse, bolstering their animated output and reintroducing the Disney musical. While the movie remains a beloved classic for more than one generation, its legacy is complicated and, often, depends on one's point of view. The Little Mermaid's most important legacy is less about the film itself, and more about which films followed it in the era that would come to be known as the Disney Renaissance.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is on the hunt for a new cast, and it looks like the reboot has found it. More on that below.
Following in Paramount Pictures and Scream’s footsteps, Sony Pictures are looking to reboot another popular horror franchise from the 90s. We say reboot, but it’s really more of a sequel, as original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to return as Julie and James.
Madelyn Cline, Camila Mendes, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King are all in talks to appear in the film, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing from a script she wrote with Sam Lansky, after Leah McKendrick delivered an initial script.
As we already know, Sony is planning on releasing the film next summer, 18th July to be precise. Filming will probably get underway sooner rather than later.

Specific images of the Holocaust have endlessly punctuated the film and TV landscape: The barbed wire of a concentration camp. Naked bodies rendered to skin and bone, tossed in discarded piles. Gleeful abuse and random killings by evil Nazis. Hollywood has repeatedly ingrained that imagery when presenting this horrific time in history, so to continue conjuring it adds to the collective trauma of an entire people.

Disney's live-action adaptations provide an updated version of the studio's animated classics. The best are welcome adaptations of well-known stories, introducing several crucial improvements and enhancing the themes and message. Already a fan-favorite, Prince Eric's live-action counterpart has a better characterization, elevating him to the top of the Disney Prince ranking.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid made notable changes to the original, including altering Ariel's motivation, giving Prince Eric a backstory, and making King Triton more sympathetic. Controversy surrounded the design of characters like Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle, with some viewers disliking their appearance, but the film was still a commercial success and well-received by audiences.
When Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid was first released, it was met with a series of controversies, one notably surrounding Ariel's loyal fish friend, Flounder. Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid is a live-action adaptation of the 1989 animated film of the same name, and while it's a refreshing adaptation, there are several notable differences between the two versions. These differences include changing Ariel's (Halle Bailey) motivation for wanting to give up her voice, giving Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) a backstory that explains his motivations and desires, and making King Triton (Javier Bardem) more sympathetic.

The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid fixed a plot hole from the original movie by changing Ariel's deal with Ursula. In the original movie, Ariel's inability to communicate with Prince Eric due to losing her voice created a plot hole that confused viewers. The live-action remake solved this issue by omitting the contract and having Ariel give Ursula a scale instead, making the whole process more personal and allowing Ursula more control over Ariel.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.
While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

The hit live-action "The Little Mermaid" just hit Disney+ to stream on Sept. 6, and apart from the original movie's songs like "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Kiss the Girl," audiences everywhere have gotten to enjoy four new songs courtesy of the original animated movie's composer, Alan Menken, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
For the most part, the songs from the original movie sound the same in the 2023 remake, but Menken did give fans a heads-up that there would be some minor changes to the original lyrics to make the movie, which was initially released in 1989, feel more modern. "There are some lyric changes in 'Kiss the Girl' because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel]," Menken told Vanity Fair in March.
No one would blame you if you initially missed the tweaks Menken and Miranda made to "Kiss the Girl.

The live-action "The Little Mermaid" movie, which just hit Disney+ to stream on Sept. 6, stayed almost entirely faithful to the original animation that came out in 1989. Still, it did make small changes. Apart from the four new songs added to the film, some notable tweaks to Prince Eric's story made his and Ariel's love story all the more meaningful.
Read on to get a breakdown of how the creators behind the new live-action Little Mermaid brought Prince Eric's character into the 21st century.
Prince Eric's Backstory in the Original "The Little Mermaid"
In the original "The Little Mermaid," Prince Eric's backstory is pretty one-note. He's a handsome, adventurous prince in search of a wife when he's saved from drowning by Ariel amid a shipwreck. When he awakes to Ariel singing to him, he immediately becomes enamored with her and her voice, but his story essentially begins and ends there.

The live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid utilized CGI and special effects to create the underwater world and was filmed in Sardinia, Italy, to give it a Caribbean feel. The villages of Santa Teresa di Gallura and Castelsardo in Sardinia were used to film various scenes. Pinewood Studios in England provided the water stages for sea sequences and sets for the interior of Eric's castles, making it the central filming location for The Little Mermaid.
The 2023 live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid takes place in the fictional underwater kingdom of Atlantica and a town on the coast of the Caribbean. Still, the movie's cast and crew never ventured to the Caribbean to film scenes. The Disney film, which is the latest of a string of live-action remakes of animation classics from the production studio, obviously utilized extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI) and special effects to create the colorful and realistic underwater world of The Little Mermaid.

Bridgerton can cash in on the fairy tale fanfare currently circulating its ton if it features Benedict Bridgerton's love story sooner than later. The Little Mermaid remake aimed to improve Prince Eric's character by expanding his role beyond the "wooden, classic prince" formula and giving him a motivation to explore the open seas. The creation of Prince Eric's new song, "Wild Uncharted Waters," was a nerve-wracking task for Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wanted to create a powerful ballad for the character to express his love for Ariel. Despite efforts to develop Prince Eric's character and positive reception from audiences, the movie's box office performance may make sequel plans unlikely, as it grossed just over $560 million against a $250 million production budget.
