‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ Is the First Bonafide Bollywood Blockbuster in Years
Image
Twenty-five years ago, I — and millions of Hindi film fans around the world — saw our first Karan Johar movie. “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” — which currently holds the top spot in IndieWire’s list of the best rom-coms on Netflix — was a superhit and instant classic, a story of love and friendship that stood the test of time and charms audiences to this day.

Johar’s latest, “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani,” (“Rocky and Rani’s Love Story”) written by Shashank Khaitan, is the kind of Bollywood bliss audiences have been craving. It’s entertaining but not dependent on action and violence. It’s star-studded but with genuinely talented actors, not just airbrushed beauty and family names. It’s modern but not Western. It’s family-oriented but not pedantic.

And it’s just a damn good time.

As much as it tracks the blooming romance of Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh...

(Ians Review) 'Rocky Aur Rani…' captures hearts when it's not inducing eye rolls (Ians Rating: ***1/2)
Image
Mumbai, July 28 (Ians) Family, love, differences between the couple and lots of drama have always been at the core of umpteen love stories. So what’s new about Karan Johar’s ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’?

There isn’t any, and yet there is some!

It’s so much that it’s ‘old wine in a new bottle’, and yet, there is a huge difference too. Besides the presence and the unique combination of veterans such as Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan, there’s the chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt that is easily the highlight of this nearly three-hour-long family entertainer.

And yes, there’s Pritam’s foot-tapping music too, though what the audience seems to be enjoying the most are some of the most popular Hindi film hits from the ’60s through the ’80s — these have them singing along loudly.

That’s not all that makes this film special.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani

Staring Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi

Directed by Karan Johar

Wait! Do we see an upsurge in the number of men joining Kathak classes after Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani? Among the many things that writers Sumit Roy, Shashank Khaitan and Ishita Moitra tells us in this kaleidoscopic view of life on Malamaal Hill, is that it’s okay for men to adopt traditionally female roles.

And listen, if you like Kathak dancing it doesn’t mean you are effeminate or gay. Tota Roy Chowdhury converts the boorish Punjabi loutish epitome of toxic masculinity Rocky, played with lipsmacking relish by Ranveer Singh. Before we know it the two men are dancing together to Sanjay Bhansali’s ‘Dola re dola re’ without the being the least conscious of the feminine expressions. Move over Aishwarya, Madhuri…

'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' makers asked to remove Mamata Banerjee's reference by Cbfc
Image
As the film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh has been given a U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (Cfbc), the makers were still asked to remove some words, dialogues and references from the movie.

The makers have been asked to remove abusive words, the mention of the Lok Sabha and a reference to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee among other changes.

The makers have been asked to remove the abusive word ‘b******d’, used multiple times in the film. The word has instead been replaced by ‘behan di’.

The Cbfc asked to remove the mention of Lok Sabha from a dialogue and not even replace it with any other term, according to a Bollywood Hungama report.

The makers have also been asked to make changes to the Rabindranath Tagore scene that became a massive talking point after the...

Movie Review | The Girl on the Train: Yeh Train, Woh Kajal, Kya Novel, Kya Picture…
Image
The Girl on the Train movie review is here. The 2021 Indian Hindi-language mystery thriller film directed by Ribhu Dasgupta is based on British author Paula Hawkins' 2015 novel of the same name and features Parineeti Chopra in lead.

The Girl on the Train is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Girl on the Train movie review.

And the award for best 'prop'ped up performance goes to that kajal (kohl) in Parineeti Chopra's eyes. That 'train' comes second in this terribly failed attempt to Indianize the 2016 Hollywood movie of the same name, which in turn, was adapted from Paula Hawkins' bestselling novel of the same name. same same, what a shame.

Never would have imagined the amazing Parineeti Chopra, out of focus completely in her worst act, with those raccoon eyes and black nails wandering in the London 'Bollywood knows' in completely sloshed condition.

Mind you, I have not read the novel so...

Series Review: Feluda Pherot Season 1 (Chhinnamastar Abhishap) (2020) by Srijit Mukherji
Satyajit Ray
In Bengal, there are few personas whom you rarely dare to interlace with and one of them is Satyajit Ray’s iconic detective character Feluda. When Srijit Mujherji decided to create his adaptation of Feluda in a web series, the expectation became sky high so were the pens of critics who were ready to tear him apart for any mistakes. But Srijit had a winner under his sleeve with a slick adaptation of Ray’s master creation without deviating much from the original thoughts and narrative.

Chhinnamastar Abhishap revolves around a mystery related to the family of Mahesh Chowdhury (Dhritiman Chatterjee) and is placed in the beautifully scenic Hazaribag. It is better not to reveal the storyline as it dissolves the charm of a detective narrative.

Srijit Mukherji has decided to bring out the character of Feluda exactly as illustrated by Ray and it has been perfectly portrayed by Tota Roy Chowdhury.
