It is depressing to see how opioid addiction has become so rampant that we have declared it an epidemic. Director Spencer Folmar’s “Shooting Heroin” comes from a very worried and somehow personal point of view. However, it is a film so confused between being a story that throws you into a whirlwind of emotional turmoil and a faith-based melodrama that all it manages to become is a brooding, self-serious addiction thriller that is easily forgettable.

Exclusive: Producer and promoter Je’Caryous Johnson, best known for stage productions of seminal Black films like New Jack City and Set It Off, is launching a film studio.

Je’Caryous Johnson Studios will primarily focus on Black stories and produce projects at a range of budgets in various genres and mediums.

The studio’s first project will be the narrative feature The Paralegal. The film is written and directed by Johnson in his feature film debut. The film follows a lawyer who finds himself being blackmailed by a deranged paralegal determined to take everything he has—except his wife. We’re told production will begin in March.

Alan Sacks, who teamed with stand-up comic and fellow Brooklynite Gabe Kaplan to create the popular 1970s ABC sitcom Welcome, Back, Kotter, has died. He was 81.

Sacks died Tuesday of complications from lymphoma in New York while on a visit there, his wife, talent agent Annette van Duren, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was first diagnosed 22 years ago but spent several years in remission before the cancer returned.

In the 1980s, after a project involving the iconic L.A. band The Runaways never got off the ground, Sacks took the footage and incorporated it into a plot about a director working on a tight deadline to finish a movie starring Runaways member Joan Jett.

The resulting film, Du-Beat-e-o (1984), which he also helmed, was set against the background of the hardcore L.A. punk scene and featured Ray Sharkey and Derf Scratch of the punk band Fear.

High school sitcoms have always been a mixed bag, largely because the issues kids are dealing with at that age beg for a more nuanced take than the half-hour format can provide. Godawful shows like "Saved by the Bell," "Head of the Class" and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper" are the low standard a high school sitcom has to clear nowadays, so we need to count our blessings when something as wonderful as Mike O'Brien's "A.P. Bio" and the currently airing Brian Jordan Alvarez's "English Teacher" arrives.

As an avid child of television, Friday nights were something to look forward to as ABC had the coolest shows from 8-11 p.m. Nestled between The Patridge Family and The Odd Couple was Room 222, more a dramedy than a straightforward sitcom. As school let out in January 1974, the network clearly wasn’t done with classes as just over a year later, they debuted a true sitcom: Welcome Back, Kotter.

The series ran until May 1979, and its superb casting catapulted John Travolta to superstardom. Born from standup comic Gabe Kapler’s routines about his Brooklyn high school experiences, the premise saw Gabe Kotter return to his alma mater, James Buchanan High, this time as a teacher. He was assigned the lowest performing students, dubbed the Sweathogs, of which he was once one.

Filmed before an audience on videotape, it closely resembled the other popular half-hour shows of the era.

As a Gen Xer who grew up fascinated by The Six Million Dollar Man and in turn tuned in for Lee Majors’ The Fall Guy, I walked into the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt movie this weekend with a certain excitement, but also tempered expectations.

As a rule, I don’t read reviews before seeing a movie. But I’d glimpsed enough headlines and social media chatter to know that The Fall Guy was only (very) “loosely” based on the ABC action series that ran for five seasons. I like Gosling, love Blunt and enjoy stunt work, so I decided to take a flyer on this.

Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton (played by Moonlight’s André Holland) is a wanted man in the upcoming caper The Big Cigar, premiering with the first two episodes Friday, May 17 on Apple TV+. New episodes will stream weekly through June 14.

A new trailer for the six-episode limited series previews Newton’s daring escape from the FBI, who viewed the thought leader as a threat and had been pursuing him for years.

Who’d have thought they’d see ya? Certainly not John Travolta, who had a reunion with castmate Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs on the red carpet at the TCM Film Festival.

The two were part of sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, which ran on ABC from Sept. 1975 to May, 1979. Gabe Kaplan starred as a high school teacher in a charge of a remedial education class nicknamed the “Sweathogs.” The group included Travolta and Hilton-Jacobs.

The 40th anniversary screening of Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” at the upcoming TCM Film Festival will be a full-blown reunion.

The Turner Classic Movies Film Festival announced on Wednesday that actors Drew Barrymore and Henry Thomas are confirmed to appear alongside Spielberg and producer Kathleen Kennedy at the screening, which will be held on the opening night of the festival on April 21.

In keeping with this year’s festival theme “All Together Now: Back to the Big Screen,” director Michael Schultz and stars Glynn Turman, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Garrett Morris, and Steven Williams will introduce their seminal coming-of-age dramedy “Cooley High” (1975), about a group of teens in Chicago preparing for life after high school. In addition, stars Kevin Bacon, Paul Reiser, Steve Guttenberg and Tim Daly will celebrate the 40th anniversary of “Diner” (1982).

The festival runs from April 21 through April 24 in Hollywood, with TCM Primetime host Ben Mankiewicz...

The 2021 Daytime Emmy Awards celebrated winners in the fiction and lifestyle categories with posthumous honors for Alex Trebek and Larry King, as well various other accolades going to Zac Efron, Karrueche Tran, Diego Luna, Andy Serkin, and more.

Trebek, who lost his battle against pancreatic cancer in November, won in the Outstanding Game Show Host category beating out Steve Harvey, Pat Sajak, Wayne Brady, and Alfonso Ribeiro.

King was recognized as the winner in the Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host category nearly six months after his death due to sepsis, end-stage renal failure, and acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. Mark Hamill and Lupita Nyong’o were among the winners on Saturday night as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced the winners of the 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards in the children’s and animation categories. The show represented the second of three Daytime Emmy ceremonies this year; the third will be live streamed on Sunday.

Nyong’o won the limited performance in a children’s program Emmy for playing the Storyteller, in Netflix’s “Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices. Hammil was named outstanding performer in a preschool animated program for Disney Channel’s “Elena of Avalor.”

This represented the first year that all children’s programming, regardless of timeslot, shifted to the Daytime Emmys, under a new agreement between New York-based NATAS and L.A.-based Television Academy.

Easily the best family-oriented black experience movie of the early 1970s, the Third World Cinema Corporation’s first film features Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones in a funny, endearing saga of life in the welfare system, with human feeling and compassion to spare. But the triumphant socially progressive movie fails the 2020 diversity test — its primary producer, cameraman, writers and director are white. Are we still allowed to enjoy it?

Almost exactly one year since it began its theatrical release in the United States, Bong Joon Ho‘s Parasite is arriving on The Criterion Collection. The Best Picture winner leads their October 2020 lineup, and for those who bought the standard Blu-ray edition earlier this year, you can now plan to give it to a friend as the disc is packed with extras.

Among the special features is the black-and-white version of the film, an audio commentary by Bong Joon Ho and critic Tony Rayns, a feature on the New Korean Cinema movement featuring Bong and Park Chan Wook, a storyboard comparison and more.

Also part of the October lineup is Stephen Frears’ crime drama The Hit, starring Terence Stamp, the Gregory Peck-led western The Gunfighter, John Berry’s Claudine, which features an Oscar-nominated performance by Diahann Carroll, and a new restoration of the Jean-Luc Godard classic Pierrot le fou.

In the next few years, I predict someone is going to make a staggering drama about the opioid crisis — a filmmaker like, say, Debra Granik, or maybe Kent Jones or Kathryn Bigelow or Steven Soderbergh. It will, of course, be a film about something much larger than drug addiction, one that confronts the disappearance of jobs, the cycles of hopelessness and rage, the gambits of pharmaceutical companies, and the loss of faith in the system (and the future) that has hollowed out the heartland. That’s a story that needs telling, and if it touches on the reasons so many Middle Americans have embraced a fascist used-car salesman as their political savior, then all the better.

On Thursday evening The Academy’s Science and Technology Council presented “Galactic Innovations: Star Wars and Rogue One” at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Oscar-winning, Oscar-nominated and Scientific and Technical Award-honored panelists included Ben Burtt ,John Dykstra, Richard Edlund, Harrison Ellenshaw, Bill George, John Knoll, Marcia Lucas, Dennis Muren, Bruce Nicholson and Rachel Rose. The evening was hosted by “Rogue One” co-producer Kiri Hart.

These VFX pioneers shared the journey of creating the impossible with their breakthrough visual effects. They also shared rare images that compared the technology and visual results from both films.

When it comes to Rob Zombie as a filmmaker I’ll admit I have something of a soft spot for his work. He knows his horror and never bows down for the constant calls to conform to the politically correct society that seems to dominate the entertainment world now. With the release of 31, the question is, has he managed to pull off another The Devil’s Rejects or is this more of a Halloween 2?

Immediately after my 31 screening, Rob Zombie revealed how it only took a matter of seconds for his film’s wicked competition to materialize as an idea. This explains the chewy, undercooked nature of Zombie’s The Most Dangerous Game homage, which delivers buckets of grossness and a story that lacks a single spec of conviction. It’s death for death’s sake if you will, perverted by misogyny and told through rotting teeth. A new trailer has been released for Rob Zombie's upcoming horror thriller 31. I had a chance to see the film at Sundance earlier this year, and if you're a fan of Rob Zombie movies then you'll probably like it. I didn't really care for it because it's basically just a rehash of all the other films that he's made. I'm just waiting for Zombie to grow as a filmmaker and break out of his shell and do something different and unique. "Nightmarish on every level." If you already hate carnivals, you might want to stay away from this. Saban Films has released a second trailer for Rob Zombie's latest horror feature, titled 31, about an evil carnival, twisted game. Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in a "Hell-like" compound where they must survive for 12 hours against a gang of sadistic clowns to escape alive. Starring Sheri Moon Zombie (of course), Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Torsten Voges, Sandra Rosko, and Meg Foster. I can't even tell what's going on in half of this trailer, way too many close-ups and it's over-edited. But if you dig Zombie's messed up horror flicks, then have at it. It's been three long years since director Rob Zombie's last movie, The Lords of Salem, but for those awaiting this horror filmmaker's return, you won't have to wait much longer. The musician brings his unique vision back to the big screen with his new horror-thriller 31, debuting on VOD platforms September 16 before hitting theaters on October 21. Just one month after the first trailer and poster debuted, four new character posters have arrived.

These one-sheets, which come courtesy of Saban Films, offer new looks at four unique characters, Doom-Head (Richard Brake), Psycho-Head (Lew Temple), Father Murder (Malcolm McDowell) and Charly (Sheri Moon Zombie). Writer-director Rob Zombie introduced Doom-Head to fans with a photo he released last year, with the director predicting that he will be the next great horror villain. Last week, Saban Films debuted a new poster for director Rob Zombie's upcoming horror-thriller 31, which will hit theaters just before Halloween. Today, the studio has unveiled the first full trailer for this highly-anticipated movie, which comes nearly two years after the first trailer was released. Now that the project has distribution and a release date in place, we can surely expect to see much more from 31 in the months ahead.

31 stars Rob Zombie's wife Sheri Moon Zombie, along with Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeffrey Daniel Phillips, Lew Temple, Meg Foster and Malcolm McDowell. The supporting cast includes Elizabeth Daily, Daniel Roebuck, Tracey Walter, Ginger Lynn-Allen, Judy Geeson, Torsten Vorges, Jane Carr and Jeffrey Daniel Phillips. Richard Brake's character Doom-head has been called the next great horror villain by the director, but we'll have to wait and see how audiences respond to this character.

Rob Zombie is directing from his own screenplay and producing with Andy Gould, Matthew Perniciaro, Michael Sherman, Eddie Vaisman and Mike Elliott. Saban Films has set an October 21 release date for 31, putting this movie in a highly-competitive weekend where six other movies are currently slated to open in wide release. Also opening on October 21 is Paramount's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Lionsgate's horror-comedy Boo! A Madea Halloween, 20th Century Fox's comedy Keeping Up With the Joneses, Focus Features' A Monster Calls, Universal's Ouija: Origin of Evil and PureFlix's drama I'm Not Ashamed.

31 was originally slapped with an Nc-17 rating by the MPAA back in December 2015, and even after Rob Zombie submitted a re-edited cut, the MPAA still gave the film an Nc-17 rating. After another round of edits, the MPAA finally gave the movie an R rating this past January, for "strong bloody horror violence, pervasive language, sexual content and drug use." It's possible that Rob Zombie will release a gore drenched director's cut sometime in the future. Until then, check out the new trailer for Rob Zombie's 31.

On their trip, they’re stopped and attacked with only six of them taken alive. Soon, they’re taken to a strange building where three strangers in aristocratic garb force them to play a survival game: For the next 12 hours, they must wander through a maze of rooms evading murder and torture the entire time. Rob Zombie rose to fame as the founding member of the ’80s heavy metal band White Zombie. They released four albums between 1987 and 1995; their debut record “Soul-Crusher” was particularly acclaimed, especially by musicians like Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. He briefly focused on his solo work before shifting his attention to directing horror films. Some of his previous credits include “House of 1000 Corpses” and its sequel “The Devil’s Rejects,” the remake of “Halloween” and its sequel “Halloween II,” and “The Lords of Salem.”

“31” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. It will be released on VOD platforms on September 16th and in a limited theatrical release on October 21st.

If you're a fan of Rob Zombie's movies, then you'll probably enjoy his latest movie 31. It's pretty much the same thing we've seen him do over and over again. I watched the film at Sundance earlier this year, and I wasn't a big fan. I was hoping he'd do something different and unique with it, but it's just Sheri Moon Zombie and some friends trying to survive a bunch of maniacs who are out to kill them. You can read my review of it here. There were aspects of it that I did like, but ultimately it was a letdown. Two things that the movie doesn't lack, though, is blood and guts. Here's the synopsis:
