The Key Stargate Character Influenced By Doctor Who
Image
Science fiction is one big web of overlapping influences and ideas. Just as viewers will find a healthy dose of "Star Wars" in "Battlestar Galactica," they'll notice more than a little "Dune" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" in "Star Wars" too. The "Stargate" franchise is no exception. David Hewlett, who first appeared on "Stargate Sg-1" before taking on a larger role in the spin-off "Stargate Atlantis," spoke about how he drew inspiration from British sci-fi series, "Doctor Who." Hewlett portrayed Dr. Rodney McKay in the "Stargate" universe, an astrophysicist and contractor for the U.S. Air Force. McKay possessed a remarkable intellect, which often helped him save the day but also made him insufferably arrogant.

In an interview with Gateworld in 2005, when he was still shooting "Stargate Atlantis" and when "Doctor Who" had just returned to TV, Hewlett discussed how his love of sci-fi began with the BBC series. "I grew up on science fiction.

The Two Stargate Atlantis Actors You Didn't Know Were Siblings In Real-Life
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Stargate Atlantis."

Doctor Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) is integral to the "Stargate" franchise. A scientist who joins the Stargate Program in "Stargate Sg-1," McKay plays a more prominent role in all five seasons of "Stargate Atlantis," which follows a brand new exploratory mission encircling the eponymous lost city. In case you need a quick refresher on McKay, I got you: He was stationed at Area 51 before his involvement with Stargate Command and helped out the Sg-1 crew at several points with his brilliant scientific expertise. After Atlantis was discovered in the Pegasus Galaxy (along with the terrifying regime of the Wraiths), McKay was assigned to the mission, during which he amassed extensive knowledge on the Ancients as the crew's chief scientific advisor.

A certain season 3 episode of "Stargate Atlantis" gives us more insight into McKay's life outside his professional relationships. Titled "McKay and Mrs. Miller,...

Who Are The Wraith In Stargate Atlantis?
Image
Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper's "Stargate Atlantis" is a spin-off adventure that bridges the gap between seasons 7 and 8 of the beloved, long-running "Stargate Sg-1." This might give you the impression that "Stargate Atlantis" is a quick, one-shot tale set in space, but this five-season sci-fi series is anything but. Here, things kick off with the discovery of an Antarctic outpost created by an ancient alien race, followed by the unearthing of the lost city of Atlantis, which quickly becomes the base of operations for the Stargate fleet investigating it. Under Major John Sheppard's (Joe Flanigan) capable leadership, the Atlantis team navigates the legendary city and learns that its native inhabitants were forced to flee after an attack by the Wraith. Who are these mysterious beings, and why do they go about exterminating civilizations?

These questions haunt "Stargate Atlantis," and we are soon granted uneasy answers about these formidable antagonists.

Quick Links'Debug' Has Jason Momoa as a Villain, Not a HeroJason Momoa’s Scenes Make This MovieDoes 'Debug' Stand the Test of Time?

Before having the chance to play The Ultimate Bastich (better known as Lobo) in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, actor Jason Momoa had the chance to bring another hero to life. For more than a decade, he was none other than Aquaman in an assortment of Dceu titles on both the big and small screen — Batman v Superman, Justice League, two solo films — the list goes on. But as much as the world might know him for his fantastical protagonist roles, Momoa actually had a little bit of an acting detour just before he stepped into the comic book adaptation world.

Instead of transforming into any kind of superhero, he stepped into the role of a villain that was inspired by the evil Hal 9000 in...

Stargate Sg-1's Rodney McKay Was A Last-Minute Character Replacement In Atlantis
Image
The "Stargate" franchise is surprisingly expansive. That fact, in and of itself, is impressive if only because Roland Emmerich's original 1994 film was a moderate box office success and didn't exactly wow the critics. ("Stargate" currently has a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.) Such a middling start wouldn't usually suggest a particular franchise was primed for numerous spin-off TV series spanning multiple seasons. But that's exactly what happened.

For those needing a quick reminder of the correct order to watch the "Stargate" franchise, after the movie the very first TV show arrived in the form of cult hit "Stargate Sg-1," which proved popular enough that it birthed several other shows. The first of these was "Stargate Atlantis," which debuted in 2004 and followed Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and his team as they joined other squads sent by Stargate command to explore the Pegasus Galaxy — home to the lost city of Atlantis in the "Stargate" universe.

10 Good Movies That Needed A Bigger Budget To Be Actually Great
Image
Some movies with limited budgets may fall short due to inadequate production value, preventing them from achieving greatness. Low-budget films sometimes fail to fully realize their ambitious visions due to financial constraints, leaving them as adequate but not exceptional. Additional funding could have transformed good movies into masterpieces, enhancing elements like casting, special effects, missing scenes, or the overall aesthetic, resulting in a more immersive and memorable cinematic experience.

Some movies are just good enough to be enjoyable but lack the production value required to make them truly great — a problem usually stemming from an insufficient budget. These movies may have a moment with terrible special effects that take the viewer out of the immersive cinematic experience, or perhaps the limited budget caused something essential to be missing. If only the studios had spent a little more, they could have wound up with brilliant masterpieces instead of merely adequate films.

There was no escaping “Red Rooms” at Fantasia.

Awarded the Cheval Noir Award for best feature at the 27th edition of the fest, Pascal Plante’s film also took honors for screenplay and Dominique Plante’s haunting score, as well as an outstanding performance award for Juliette Gariépy.

“The ultimate effect a film can achieve is to implant a significant and lasting emotional memory. ‘Red Rooms’ masterfully accomplished that goal,” said jurors David Hewlett, Brenda Lieberman, Jourdain Searles, Virginie Sélavy and Gary Sherman.

‘Pin’ Is Still the Ultimate Psychosexual Talking Anatomy Doll Movie 35 Years Later
Image
Sandor Stern’s ‘Pin’ is an unsung ‘80s classic that tells a traumatic tale of a broken family that turns an unhealthy coping mechanism into a totem of terror.

“Have you heard from Leon?”

“No.”

“I miss him a great deal.”

“So do I.”

Horror’s “evil doll” sub-genre has never been more popular, but it’s been a lively area of terror for many decades now. There’s an instantly identifiable selling point to one of these stories where a mundane toy suddenly becomes a terrifying artifact. One of the more obscure entries in the evil doll sub-genre is 1988’s Pin, a disturbing tale of repressed pain, codependent family dynamics, and displaced identity that bears more in common with Psycho than Child’s Play. Pin, while refusing to limit itself to just one type of horror, delivers a memorable meditation on trauma that makes an even greater impact 35 years later.

Even though Ryan Hurst made waves with his portrayal of Thor in the game, it's Judge who was once again singled out for praise by many critics.

For many, Judge's distinctive baritone and powerful way of speaking will be familiar from his most famous television role as Teal'c of Chulak in Stargate: Sg-1. However, that's just a single highlight of the actor's long and successful career on the big and small screen.

David Hewlett may be most known for his roles in The Shape of Water and Stargate Atlantis, but the latter isn't his only connection with Christopher Judge. In 2007, the actor wrote, directed and starred in the twisted comedy...

Cabinet Of Curiosities: Graveyard Rats Ending Explained (In Detail)
Image
Contains spoilers for Cabinet of Curiosities: Episode 2 "Graveyard Rats"Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities episode 2, "Graveyard Rats," is a devastating warning against the excesses of human greed with a suitably hellish ending. This installment, directed by Vincenzo Natali, is based on the Henry Kuttner short story "The Graveyard Rats" and tells of a destitute and desperate grave robber named Masson (David Hewlett). Like the Nick Appleton character in Cabinet of Curiosities' "Lot 36" episode, Masson struggles to make ends meet and owes large sums of money to an unknown criminal third party.

When the death of a wealthy shipping merchant presents Masson with what he thinks is a lucky break, he follows some rats into their warrens beneath the graveyard in search of the aristocrat's sword. The pursuit leads him to encounter his darkest fears and uncover a sinister secret lurking beneath the town of Salem, as he...

How Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities Built That Terrifying Rat Queen
Image
Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" is full of strange, freaky, and delightful treasures. The Netflix anthology series boasts a treasure trove of horrors that range from the otherworldly and Lovecraftian to the deceptively mundane. But for fans of practical effects, one of the cabinet's residents stands tail and shoulders above the rest: the Rat Queen.

The Rat Queen makes her grand entrance in the appropriately named episode "Graveyard Rats," which is directed by Vincenzo Natali ("Splice") and stars David Hewlett as a grave robber trapped in a cycle of bad luck. Hewlett's Masson is in bad shape by the time he meets the Rat Queen, downtrodden and seemingly doomed to never get the money he needs. Also, he's plagued by rats for much of the episode's runtime. Lots and lots of rats. Needless to say, this is an episode of TV you should skip if you're afraid of the creatures.

Ranking the Best Cabinet of Curiosities Episodes
Guillermo del Toro at an event for Splice (2009)
The thing about anthology series is that they inevitably invite comparison. Why would you present me with several distinct stories if you didn’t want me to rank them all from worst to best? Though that just might a me thing.

In any case, new Netflix horror anthology Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities presents eight unconnected tales of terror for viewers to experience. Even the folks behind the series understand that the diversity of options presented means that audiences will prefer some to others.

“With anthologies, I think it just comes down to what your taste is,” Cabinet producer J. Miles Dale tells Den of Geek. “With this show I think there’s something for everybody – whether it’s a director’s vision, or the material, or the setting, or the actors, or the dialog, or the scares. Unlike a continuing series, you can do it in bite-sized pieces.

Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities Got A Little Too Claustrophobic For David Hewlett
Image
This post contains spoilers for episode 2 of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities."

After Guillermo del Toro sets up the premise for episode 2 of "Cabinet of Curiosities," titled "Graveyard Rats," the narrative follows a grave robber named Masson (David Hewlett) whose livelihood is endangered due to pesky rats. A horrifying tale about greed and hubris, Graveyard Rats" evokes anxiety and claustrophobia, especially when Masson crawls through narrow underground tunnels in which primordial forces lurk in the darkness. Hewlett, who is sublime as the con man who waxes poetic, struggled during the underground tunnel scenes, as it was a little too claustrophobic for his liking.

The episode director, Vincenzo Natali, recently spoke to Newsweek and recounted the experience of filming in crawl spaces, joking that he was "scarred for life." The "Cube" director also praised Hewlett's dedication to the uncomfortable scenes, as the role demanded a considerable level of physicality. Natali said:

"Then for David,...

Cabinet of Curiosities: Graveyard Rats Is A Celebration of Practical Horror
Guillermo del Toro at an event for Splice (2009)
This article contains spoilers for “Graveyard Rats” in Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.

The use of practical effects is one of the best ways to distill terror into its purest form. Horror is a difficult genre to perfect, and using realistic effects and physical models to engulf the viewer into a believable world will help with the whole “scare people” thing that is the objective of the genre. The makers of “Graveyard Rats” from Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix certainly agree.

The short film, which premiered today alongside fellow short film “Lot 36,” takes the audience on a bone-chilling thrill ride through the catacombs of an underground graveyard. The protagonist of the episode, a grave robber named Masson (David Hewlett), goes with his heart instead of his head when rats start to steal the corpse that possesses the prized jewelry he needs to sell. With...
