Netflix is pulling the plug on another series after a two-season run. The decision comes nearly three months after the second season dropped on the streaming platform.

Per Variety, Netflix has canceled Unstable after two seasons. The workplace comedy series, which co-starred Rob Lowe and his real-life son, John Owen Lowe, originally premiered on Netflix in March 2023. Season 2 debuted on Aug. 1, and the future of the series has since been unclear. The show getting the boot means that the big political cliffhanger in the finale will not be resolved.

Exclusive: Netflix is not proceeding with a third season of Unstable, its comedy series starring and co-created/executive produced by Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe.

The news, which I hear has been relayed to the crew, is not surprising because Season 2 — which debuted August 1 — failed to break into the Netflix Top 10, meaning that it drew fewer than 1.4M views in its opening weekend and fewer than 1.3M views in its first full week. Netflix executives base their renewal decisions on viewing vs. cost.

According to sources, the producers had already been quietly shopping the show. The showrunner of Unstable Season 2 is Andrew Gurland, who executive produces with Rob Lowe, John Owen Lowe, Sean Clements, Claire Scanlon, and Victor Fresco.

Lamorne Morris and Iris Apatow join ‘Unstable’

Lamorne Morris and Iris Apatow (The Bubble) have signed on to the cast of Netflix’s Unstable season two. Created by Rob Lowe, John Owen, Lowe, and Victor Fresco, season two will also find Fred Armisen reprising his guest-starring role as Leslie.

The Lowes return to lead a cast that includes Sian Clifford, Rachel Marsh, Emma Ferreira, and Aaron Branch. Showrunner Andrew Gurland executive produces along with the Lowes and Sean Clements. Claire Scanlon directs and executive produces the eight-episode season.

“It’s a dream come true for us to jump back into the world of Unstable,” said Rob and John Owen Lowe to Netflix’s Tudum. “Here’s to Season 2 and the many hours of family therapy that we will need along the way.”

In addition to the father-son duo, they’re joined by returning cast members Sian Clifford, Rachel Marsh, Emma Ferreira and Aaron Branch in the upcoming season. Unstable stars Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, a “universally admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur working to make the world a better place,” per Netflix’s official logline. To complicate matters further, Dragon is in an “emotional free-fall,” and his only hope may rest in his polar-opposite son Jackson Dragon (played by Lowe’s real-life son John Owen Lowe).

“Unstable” has been renewed for Season 2 at Netflix.

The comedy series starring Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, originally debuted on Netflix in March. Andrew Gurland has joined the show as the showrunner and executive producer, while co-creator Victor Fresco has exited the series. Production on Season 2 will begin in the coming weeks in Los Angeles.

“It’s a dream come true for us to jump back into the world of ‘Unstable,'” the Lowes said in a statement. “Here’s to season two and the many hours of family therapy that we will need along the way.”

The Lowes co-created “Unstable” with Fresco. The father-son duo also serve as executive producers along with Gurland and Sean Clements. Claire Scanlon serves as director and executive producer.

Former wrestler-turned-superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is circling back to his formative years in the ring for his latest project. Variety has learned that Johnson has agreed terms to develop a comedy series based on his early wrestling career, and his relationship with former WWE head writer, Brian Gewirtz.

The outlet goes on to reveal that Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions will foster the TV project, partnering with Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez banner. Meanwhile, Andrew Gurland (Married) has been tapped to pen the pilot.

Pitched as a “behind-the-scenes look at a fictional professional wrestling outfit,” the as-yet-untitled series chronicles the working partnership between both Johnson and Gewirtz, who were described as having a “one-of-a-kind odd couple relationship” during the early days of WWE.

Will Ferrell has joined the project as a producer, and the series will be based on the real life experiences of Johnson and former WWE head writer Brian Gerwitz. According to Variety:

"Role Models" actor Ken Marino is set to direct "Latin Lover" for Pantelion Films with "Instructions Not Included" star Eugenio Derbez playing his first English-language leading role. The film is said to have a "Bad Teacher"-style tone and will begin shooting in February.

Written by Chris Spain and Jon Zack, the comedy is about an aging Latin lover who gets dumped by his sugar mama and must fend for himself in a harsh world.

Looks like Married life doesn’t suit FX.

The 2015 incarnation of the Atx Television Festival, the fourth one in the festival’s history, has added a number of new panels to their lineup to go with previously announced panels, which have included Justified, Bunheads, and Playing House.

The festival has added the Fox series Empire to its lineup. Titled “Empire: The Creatives”, the panel will feature the show’s producers Danny Strong, Ilene Chaiken, and Wendy Calhoun discussing the freshman series. The animated series Rick & Morty will also be making an appearance at the festival, as channel Adult Swim is set to present “Inside Rick and Morty”, which will feature a discussion with the show’s creators, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland.

Last weekend, Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children opened in wide release to poor reviews and lackluster ticket sales. In fact, after earning only $306, 367 on its opening weekend, the film now holds the distinction of being the fifth-worst opening movie from 1982 to the present, according to Box Office Mojo. It’s a great day for FX fans – the network just announced that it has renewed critical darling comedies You’re the Worst and Married for expanded second seasons, which will premiere next summer.

The two shows, both raw and raunchy looks at modern relationships, have been consistently lauded by critics, though neither pulled in huge ratings for FX. As part of the renewal decision, and an indication that the network will take a different tack with advertising the shows next year, You’re the Worst will move to sister channel Fxx for its sophomore run, while Married will remain on FX. Both second seasons will run for 13 episodes, as opposed to this year’s ten.

Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, the network’s Presidents of Original Programming, released an official statement, saying:

“We love these shows and the creative visions of Andrew Gurland of Married and Stephen Falk of You’re the Worst.

FX is re-committing to its two recent relationship comedies. FX has given series orders to the Andrew Gurland comedy “Married,” starring Judy Greer and Nat Faxon, as well as the comedy “You’re the Worst,” with both series receiving 10-episode orders. “Married” (pictured), which is created and executive produced by Gurland, is a half-hour comedy about being miserably in love. Russ (Faxon) and Lina Bowman (Greer) can barely remember what life was like before kids, debt, and suburbia rained on their romance — but every once in a while, in between the arguments about their declining sex life and who’s driving carpool, they are reminded what drew them together in.

Fox has put in development, Ball & Chain, a drama written/executive produced by Peter Ocko (Fairly Legal) and executive produced by Steve McPherson through Lionsgate TV. The project, which falls under McPherson’s first-look deals at Fox and Lionsgate, centers on two ex-operatives with screwed up personal lives who are set up by their intelligence agency to become romantically entangled and run missions as a team. Ocko, repped by Vision Art, has comedy pilot Divide and Conquer at USA. Fox also has bought a comedy project from Andrew Gurland and Justin Hurwitz, creators of the network’s half-hour pilot The Gabriels last season. Like The Gabriels, the new project, also produced by 20th TV, is based on Hurwitz’s life, but instead of his childhood, it involves his early adulthood. It centers on a brother and sister who develop an adult relationship that wreaks havoc on everyone else around them.

Greer’s negotiations have been complicated by the status of Andrew Gurland’s FX pilot, in which Greer will star opposite Nat Faxon. It looks like FX is going to pick up the pilot, according to one of those individuals, but Greer will still try to fit the movie into her schedule. FX has given a pilot greenlight to Bigfoot, an animated comedy series based on Graham Roumieu’s faux Bigfoot autobiography graphic novels In Me Own Words, Me Write Book, And I Not Dead. Written by Matt McKenna (American Dad) and executive produced by Seth Rogen, the FX Prods-produced project revolves around Bigfoot, everyone’s favorite crypto-zoological hominid, as a modern-day everyman who struggles with life’s philosophical quandaries as well as his own animalistic tendencies. “This will be the greatest show about an animated Bigfoot ever made,” Rogen said. A voice on Archer and one of the many Arrested Development Season 4 guest stars, Greer will star on an untitled sitcom from Andrew Gurland (Mail Order Wife). It will center around Greer's Lina and Nat Faxon's Russ, a married couple who has a few problems in the bedroom.

According to a Hollywood Reporter descriptions, Greer's tired mother of three will give her husband permission to fulfill that need elsewhere... and comedy will ensue!
