The Lion Of London Bridge | Funding underway for new British drama
Headshot
The story of Roy Larner is being told in The Lion Of London Bridge, and a crowdfunding campaign is now underway for the film.

Back in February 2021, author and screenwriter Dougie Brimson (Green Street) was revealed to have set up Red Bus Movies, a company wanting to tell UK working class stories. Brimson, a veteran of the armed forces, has now got another project on the launchpad, and needs a bit of help with the next step.

Redbus is set to make The Lion Of London Bridge, a film that tells the story of Roy Larner. Back in 2017, during the Borough Market Attack, Larner garnered headlines for fighting off three terrorists wielding machetes (alerting them to the fact that he’s a Millwall football fan has he did so).

Larner sustained life-threatening injuries during the attack, and his work was said to have saved up to 30 lives. Yet as Dougie...

Boudica Queen of War Review | Olga Kurylenko Unleashes Beast Mode
Image
Olga Kurylenko unleashes beast mode as a revered British warrior seeking bloody vengeance against ruthless Roman oppressors. Boudica: Queen of War falls short on exposition and character development but delivers a quasi-historical actioner with gruesome glee. Limbs are hacked off, entrails torn out, and more throats slit than a slaughterhouse before Thanksgiving. There's also a curious use of fantasy and mystical elements that don't quite deliver the intended impact. The story told had room for dramatic depth beyond the carnage. An opportunity was missed for a more engaging experience.

In 61 Ad, the Roman scholar Tacitus records the events that led to Britania's revolt. Roman legionaries massacre Druids who kneel before them on the island of Mona. They invoke the prophecy of a queen before their deaths. She will punish the conquerors for desecrating their lands. Meanwhile, King Prasutagus (Clive Standen) of the Celtic Iceni tribe lays in bed with his wife and two daughters.

Boudica: Queen of War trailer: Olga Kurylenko leads a blood-soaked rebellion against the Roman Empire in a new action drama
Image
Sharpen your sword and show us your war face because Saban Films‘s Boudica: Queen of War trailer is soaking the soil with blood as battle cries echo throughout the plains. In Boudica: Queen of War, Olga Kurylenko plays a mother whose life is stolen when high-ranking members of the Roman Empire storm her lands, slay her family, and brand her a nobody in the eyes of the aristocracy. Unfortunately for the Roman Empire, the people still see Kurylenko’s character as their queen and would follow her onto any battlefield without question. Given the name Boudica by her loyal subjects, the would-be queen inspires her followers to take up arms in the name of freedom from the Roman Empire. What follows is a bloodbath of epic proportions as rage leads to a plan to topple the corrupt Romans and their overlords.

Well sh*t… Scott Adkins just had to go and step it up a notch with this very Brutal, very British, hugely funny and fairly orginal Brit crime drama. Boasting a superb leading man performance from Adkins and a delightful supporting cast of top Brit talent.

So I saw the trailer, then I read the synopsis, I looked into the cast list and instanly thought ‘Well I know how this is going to go’. However I do love a lot of the cast involved in the flick and I am known to enjoy a good Brit crime thriller. Add to this Adkins has never failed to deliver when it comes to punch-y,...

Once Upon a Time in London review – unconvincing gangland saga
This true crime-inspired trudge through the cockney underworld is both misleadingly romanticised and too cheaply produced

Somehow, this true-crime-inspired gangster film brings to mind the 80s/90s concept of “heritage cinema”, a phrase that back in the day was applied to films by Merchant Ivory and any literary adaptation of the era. This particular period drama, however, has no ladies in crinolines sipping tea. Indeed, this recounting of the rise and fall of London mob boss Jack “Spot” Comer (Terry Stone) and his protege-cum-rival Billy Hill (Leo Gregory) mostly features lairy cockney men swearing and slicing each other up with cut-throat razors or finding even more inventive ways to inflict pain. But the film’s nostalgic posturing – where boozy nights in the pub were soundtracked by skiffle-band covers, £80 was a lot of money and all prostitutes were pretty – is just as misleading and romanticised as anything that Helena Bonham Carter...

Simon Rumley (director of Red, White & Blue, Fashionista & Crowhurst) has begun a six week shoot on the brutal gangster thriller Once Upon a Time in London – for Gateway Films – which dramatises the violent reign of two of London’s most notorious gangsters, Billy Hill (Leo Gregory) and Jack ‘Spot’ Comer (Terry Stone), charting the legendary rise and fall of a nationwide criminal empire that lasted until the mid-fifties and which paved the way for the notorious Kray Twins and The Richardsons.

Director and co-writer Simon Rumley commented:

Having spent the last decade or so writing and directing thematically disparate but collectively extreme dramas, it makes absolute sense for me to progress to the gangster genre where love, lust, greed, paranoia, betrayal and violence are every day occurrences. The story of Jack Spot Comer, Billy Hill and their respective battles to become King of London’s Underworld has remained one of Britain’s most dynamic,...

The Musketeers series 2 episode 6 review: Through A Glass, Darkly
The Musketeers takes a rare dip in what has been a very strong series with this week's episode, Through A Glass Darkly...

This review contains spoilers.

2.6 Through A Glass, Darkly.

The Musketeers enters its home stretch with Through A Glass Darkly. If I had to compare it to any previous episode, it bears the most resemblance to The Good Traitor in that both are filled with multiple side plots and overarching story development whilst centring on a single antagonist. However, whereas The Good Traitor included equally substantial side plots, Through A Glass Darkly focuses too much on what unfortunately is a weak and at times nonsensical bad guy. That’s not to say that this week's instalment doesn’t have its moments – it certainly does, but not enough when compared to the rest of this series' offerings.

This week’s plot sees the Musketeers escort the King and his entourage...

ITV has announced that Foyle's War will end after its current series.

The long-running period drama starring Michael Kitchen will air its final episode on Sunday (January 18) at 8pm.

The final episode 'Elise' will see Christopher Foyle (Kitchen) solving his final ever case in the two-hour special. It will feature Foyle looking into Hilda Pierce's (Ellie Haddington) secret role during the war, following an assassination attempt on her life.

Writer and creator Anthony Horowitz said: "It feels a terrible wrench to say goodbye to characters I've lived with for more than 15 years. But the truth is that I'm not sure there are any more stories to tell and anyway it was always my intention to end on a high note and I think this year's episodes are the very best we've done.

"I'm proud of what we've achieved with Foyle's War and I'm very grateful to the audience that has...

Top Dog Review
Crime dramas, crime thrillers, gangster films. They often get a bad rap – and it’s not hard to see why when there’s a constant stream of poorly made, low budget films being spurned out with the same boring plot where someone shoots someone because he ‘mugged off’ wotshisname / stole the drugs / snitched on so-and-so. So it’s something of a relief when something comes along that’s been made with a little more effort, which is where Martin Kemp’s Top Dog comes into play.

Top Dog was brought to life by Green Street writer Dougie Brimson and lead actor Leo Gregory, who plays bad-boy-turned-good Billy Evans. Evans makes the fatal faux pas of trying to protect his family from a local gang who are charging them protection money – so far, so ordinary. But director Kemp is evidently keen on attempting to present something a little different. There is...

How the agony of adaption took me to the ecstasy of the Empire
A tweet that changed everything

There is only one person to thank for my novel Top Dog hitting the screen and the truth is, I have no idea who they are or where they reside. Nor I suspect, does anyone else.

Call it fate, luck or coincidence but when that anonymous soul hit that retweet button and sent Leo Gregory’s name onto my twitter feed, they sent both of our lives off on a journey. A journey which would last a little under 18 months later and would end with the two of us accepting awards at the British Independent Film Festival in London’s Leicester Square.

Now I could go into a long winded account of exactly how that happened but I won’t because if you wrote it in a novel, it would be laughed at as being too far fetched.

My guilty pleasure: Green Street
This football hooligan genre film about an expelled Harvard student who joins West Ham's firm is compellingly awful – but it's entertaining if you can't sleep

• More from My guilty pleasure

I am prone to insomnia. I'll lie in bed for a couple of hours, then go turn on the TV and flick through the channels until I find something that holds my attention, often on the film channels. Sometimes it's The Ring, but, when it's on, nothing beats Green Street (Green Street Hooligans in the Us). I've seen it countless times now, though I'm not sure I've ever seen it in its entirety at one sitting – it tends to be 30 minutes here, 45 there, an hour somewhere else. But between all those partial sittings, I've managed several complete run-throughs.

It's not that I'm a fan of the football hooligan genre – I've dabbled in one or two others and found them unwatchable,...
