Alan Rudolph and Keith Carradine Bucked Hollywood Expectations for ‘Choose Me’ — and Built an Enduring ’80s Romantic Gem
Image
It’s a good time to be an Alan Rudolph fan. Last fall, Shout! Studios released a gorgeous restoration of Rudolph’s unjustly maligned satire “Breakfast of Champions,” and this month Rudolph enters the Criterion Collection with a new 4K Uhd edition of his deliriously romantic and unclassifiable “Choose Me.”

A hypnotic noir-inflected fever dream following the intersecting love stories of a group of strangers who frequent the same smoky bar, “Choose Me” is vintage Rudolph: hyper-stylized, hilarious, and concerned with universal ideas expressed in the most idiosyncratic possible manner.

When Rudolph came to write and direct “Choose Me” in 1984, he was at a crossroads in his career, having made two excellent but unpopular movies (“Welcome to L.A.” and “Remember My Name”) outside the system and two studio pictures (“Roadie” and “Endangered Species”) on which Rudolph felt suffocated after his liberating apprenticeship as an assistant director under Robert Altman on “The Long Goodbye” and “Nashville.

Steven Tyler is reuniting Aerosmith for A-list Grammys viewing party
Image
Steven Tyler doesn’t want to miss a thing, so he’s reuniting Aerosmith for his 6th annual Grammys viewing party.

They’ll be joined by A-listers like Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Linda Perry, Matt Sorum, Nuno Bettencourt, and Lainey Wilson for the philanthropic event on Sunday, Feb. 2 at the Hollywood Palladium. Tiffany Haddish will serve as host. (See Gold Derby’s Grammy predictions.)

Aerosmith announced its retirement from touring in 2024 after Tyler fractured his larynx the year prior. The four-time Grammy-winning rock band consists of lead vocalist Tyler, bassist Hamilton, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarists Perry and Brad Whitford. This will mark Aerosmith’s first time performing together since Sept. 9, 2023.

As usual, Tyler’s Grammys viewing party is sponsored by Janie’s Fund, the initiative he created in order to bring hope and healing to girls and young women who have experienced trauma. More than...

The Choose Me soundtrack gave Teddy Pendergrass a seductive second wind
Image
It’s kind of wild that there has never been an official soundtrack album for Choose Me, Alan Rudolph’s 1984 kooky-but-foxy ensemble rom-com. For starters, the movie was distributed by Island Alive, a joint venture between then-indie company Alive Films and Island Records co-founder Chris Blackwell. Secondly, the songs in...

Podtalk: Johnny Brower Remembers John Lennon in ‘REVIVAL69’
Image
Chicago – One month after John Lennon made his iconic walk across Abbey Road for that classic album cover, he got a call from Canadian promoter Johnny Brower. Would Lennon play at a Toronto rock show? The answer to that question is told in the recently released rock doc “REVIVAL69: The Concert That Rocked the World.”

REVIVAL69: The Concert That Rocked the World

Rating: 5.0/5.0

The Toronto Rock and Roll Revival (Aka Revival ’69) was held at Varsity Stadium on September 13th, 1969, and was filmed by famed rock documentarian D.A. Pennebaker. Johnny Brower was the young promoter, who had made a name for himself as The rock concert promoter/facilitator of that era for Canada. The planned concert revival “happening” – a bill of 1950s rockers like Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, even adding Jim Morrison and The Doors and a young Alice Cooper – failed to generate ticket sales.

Alice Cooper Once Tossed a Chicken Into an Audience. A New Doc Captures the Mayhem
Image
When it comes to iconic moments in rock history, one can include the Beatles’ rooftop concert, Jimi Hendrix’s literally incendiary set at the Monterey International Pop Festival, the 1973 Kool Herc party that helped launch hip-hop — and, of course, Alice Cooper and the chicken.

In September 1969, Cooper, not yet a household rock-weirdo name, was on the lineup of the Toronto Rock N Roll Revival, a festival that brought together two generations of rock stars. Pioneers like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Bo Diddley were on the bill, sharing the day-long...

David Libert Dies: Alice Cooper’s Ex-Tour Manager, Shep Gordon Protégé & The Happenings Co-Founder Was 81
Image
David Libert, a founding member of the ’60s pop group The Happenings as well a tour manager for Alice Cooper and Prince, manager for George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, the Runaways, Living Colour and many more, died February 20, according to a post on his official Instagram page. He was 81.

The title of Libert’s 2022 memoir is Rock and Roll Warrior, and it’s an apt one. Over the course of his decades in the music business, the Paterson, NJ-raised Libert found success as a musician, songwriter, road manager, concert promoter, author and (briefly) drug dealer, for which he spent about a year in prison.

Just out of the Air Force in 1961, Libert started The Happenings with four other kids from Paterson. The group’s major hits were “See You in September” in 1966 and a cover version of George & Ira Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm” the following year, both of which peaked at No.

‘The People Under the Stairs’ – Universal and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Remaking Wes Craven Classic
Wes Craven at an event for Scream 4 (2011)
It was only a matter of time until Hollywood took a stab at remaking Wes Craven‘s criminally underrated and appreciated The People Under the Stairs, which will be penned by Doom Patrol and Night Sky scribe Ezra Claytan Daniels for Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions, reports Deadline.

Monkeypaw Productions will produce the film with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld serving as producers. The project is still in early development.

The original Universal Studios movie, which Craven wrote and directed, and produced with Shep Gordon follows young Fool (Brandon Adams) who breaks into the home of his family’s greedy and uncaring landlords.

There he discovers a disturbing scenario where incestuous adult siblings have mutilated a number of boys and kept them imprisoned under stairs in their large, creepy house. As Fool attempts to flee before the psychopaths can catch him, he meets their daughter, Alice (A.J. Langer...

Dwayne Johnson, Auli'i Cravalho, and More Stars Urge Fans to Support Maui's Wildfire Recovery
Image
On Aug. 8, wildfires exploded across the Hawaiian island of Maui, burning entire neighborhoods and forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. A series of fires broke out across the island over four days, creating billions of dollars of damage, scorching thousands of acres, and killing at least 115 people, per the Associated Press. The fires have destroyed entire communities, ruining countless livelihoods, leaving hospitals overflowing with burn victims, and forcing thousands of people into shelters, according to CNN.

On Aug. 31, Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey announced that they'd come together to support recovery efforts by kicking off a new fund with a $10 million donation. The fund, called The People's Fund of Maui, will provide Hawaii residents above the age of 18 who were affected by the fires with a monthly $1,200 stipend. The fund was created with "guidance, insights, and the blessing of community elders, leaders and residents including Hōkūulani Holt-Padilla, Keali'i Reichel,...

Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson Launch People’s Fund of Maui
Image
In response to the devastating wildfires and immediate needs in the community, Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson announced the establishment of “People’s Fund of Maui” to distribute cash directly to those who were displaced and affected by the fire.

The fund is launching with an initial $10 million donated by Winfrey and Johnson and a call to action for others to contribute to this meaningful and ongoing relief effort.

Collaborating closely with an esteemed advisory board and support from the local community and respected elders, this new fund will serve as a bridge to provide cash directly to the families and individuals affected so that they can personally determine how best to use the funds for themselves. Every adult resident (18 and over) who lives in the affected area and was displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula is eligible to receive $1,200 per month to help them through this period of recovery.

Maui, A Hollywood Favorite Hawaiian Getaway, Faces Tragic Fire: A Report From The Heart Of Paradise
Image
The texts were ringing like crazy this morning. “Are you in Maui? Are you okay?” Fortunately, yes, just fine. But Maui, the second-biggest Island in Hawaii, continues to fight massive wildfires that started Tuesday and virtually destroyed the classic town of Lahaina (capital of Hawaii at one time) and a tourist mecca.

Flames have reportedly destroyed hundreds of homes and some businesses in a paradise that has long been a favorite getaway — and even home for many entertainment luminaries, including Oprah Winfrey, Clint Eastwood, Steven Tyler, Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Kris Kristofferson and Jeff Bezos, among many more. Mick Fleetwood not only lives on the island, but has a popular restaurant, Fleetwood’s On Front Street, that was situated right in the path of where the fire was most fierce in picturesque Lahaina, a city described now as looking like a bombed-out war zone.

I come here every summer and...

Red Right Hand: An Oral History – How the Nick Cave Song Became the Anthem of the ‘Scream’ Franchise
Image
In October of 1994, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds unleashed their eighth studio album Let Love In. Three singles were released in conjunction with the certified silver UK collection leading up to its formal launch. And while “Do You Love Me?” and “Loverman” set the stage for the prolific album and its harmonic tenor, it was the third single that would go on to cross the boundaries of its art form and firmly implant itself in the hallowed halls of horror history.

Scream (1996) slashed its way to genre hungry audiences several years after “Red Right Hand” hit the shelves in music stores. Although the song was written independently of the film, it’s difficult to imagine one without the other. From the second it begins, “Red Right Hand” ushers forth a domineering force, guided by the bloody governing appendage of a madman that perfectly encapsulates the film’s ever encroaching threat.

How ‘Supermensch’ Shep Gordon Conspired to Extend Raquel Welch’s Career With a Bit of Side Boob
Image
Shep Gordon, the longtime manager of Alice Cooper, also known affectionately as “Supermensch” (the title of a 2013 documentary about him), appeared at the Pollstar Live! conference in Los Angeles Tuesday and shared a revealing story about his former client Raquel Welch. The actress, who died last week at the age of 82, was actually quite prudish, Gordon explained, but “her appeal was sex.” The two worked together for five years straddling the end of the 1970s and beginning of the ’80s, a time when Welch’s career had reached a crossroads.

The solution seemed to be a Las Vegas show, which Ann-Margret had executed successfully, drawing an audience of wives with husbands in tow. Similarly, what man wouldn’t want to see a scantily clad Welch in the flesh? The formula worked, but after a three-year residency at Caesars Palace, Welch’s contract was close to expiring and Gordon had to step in.

The 10 Best Mike Myers Movies And TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Throughout his decades-long career, writer, actor, comedian, and director Mike Myers has been part of not one, not two, but three mammoth movie hits. Google his name, and you'll find stories alternating between the mullet hero of "Wayne's World," a psychedelic spy, or a grumpy green ogre -- such is the versatility of this Canadian-born comedy machine.

As if his franchise chops weren't impressive enough, he's also responsible for creating two out of these three blockbuster movie tentpoles. Myers' talent places a focus on character creation and sculpting unique worlds. Audiences have been quick to jump onto whatever bandwagon Myers dreams up. He's one of the most successful and well-known comedians working today.

Funnybones aside, he's also someone who isn't afraid to shake things up and appear where you'd least expect. He recently collaborated on David O. Russell's "Amsterdam," continuing a supporting role trend that saw him appear in...

Mike Myers Talks ‘The Pentaverate’ and Lorne Michaels’ Failed Movie Pitch at Netflix Is a Joke Fest
Image
In Mike Myers’ new six-part Netflix series, “The Pentaverate,” the Canadian comedy legend plays eight new characters. Add them to a repertoire that includes such beloved weirdos as Wayne Campbell, Austin Powers, Dieter, Dr. Evil and Shrek, and the streamer seems eager to tout their partnership with the actor, pairing him with director David O. Russell for an hour-long mutual-appreciation session at the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival.

Asked by Russell to describe the idea that inspired the new show, Myers — who showed up, despite having lost his voice to seasonal allergies — flashed back to his 1993 feature “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” in which he played both main character Charlie Mackenzie and his dad, a cuckoo conspiracy nut who ranted about a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world who run everything.

“In the last six years, just seeing the rise of all the weird...

Mike Myers returns for Netflix’s ‘The Pentaverate,’ his first streaming series: Watch the trailer
Image
Comedy legend Mike Myers is back at it again, this time portraying eight different characters in the new Netflix limited series “The Pentaverate.” The show, from the mind of Myers, is based on a joke from his 1993 romantic comedy,“So I Married an Axe Murderer.”

In that film, Myers also played multiple roles, including not just the lead character, Charlie Mackenzie, but his father, Stuart. It’s Stuart who explains the Pentaverate as a nefarious secret society. Here’s the relevant quote:

Stuart Mackenzie: Well, it’s a well-known fact, Sonny Jim, that there’s a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.

Tony Giardino [played by Anthony Lapaglia]: So who’s in this Pentavirate?

Stuart Mackenzie: The Queen, The Vatican,...

Lily Meola’s ‘Dark and Beautiful’ Existence: How the Singer Turned Tragedy into a Rebirth
Image
When people began hearing Lily Meola’s name mentioned alongside that of Willie Nelson back in 2013, they were rightly impressed. The country music legend had given Meola, then only 20, his stamp of approval and recorded a duet with her for his album To All the Girls…. But Nelson’s imprimatur was a mixed blessing, setting expectations that Meola was a dyed-in-the-wool country singer. On her upcoming EP Daydream, she tosses those assumptions to the wind.

While country music and Americana inarguably have a place in her sound, Meola’s sweet...

Slideshow, Podtalk: Johnny Brower on ‘Rock ’n Roll Revival' 1969, featuring John Lennon
Image
Previous | Image 1 of 6 | NextJohn Lennon, Yoko Ono and Johnny Brower (right of Yoko) meet the press.

Chicago – During the year 1969, in the midst of Woodstock and Summer of Soul, was the Rock ’n Roll Revival, taking place in Toronto, Canada. What makes this concert as significant as the other two – astoundingly, all three shows took place within three months of each other – is that a Canadian rock promoter named Johnny Brower snagged the biggest act of all for the show… John Lennon. The story of this amazing coup would make a great film, and that is what Brower is angling to create, along with Executive Producer Kristi Dunn Kucera.

The origin of the “Rock ’n Roll Revival’ lies with Johnny Brower, a young adult in the 1960s looking to participate in his passion … rock music. He began in a band, as most do, but his ability to book gigs expanded with other groups,...

Lukas Nelson Looked Up and Inward During Lockdown. He Found His Best Album Yet

If the world goes to shit, Lukas Nelson wants to make sure he has a way to listen to his record collection. The country-rock scion is so invested in the physical product that he and his band Promise of the Real were adamant about recording their new album with producer Dave Cobb, A Few Stars Apart, on analog tape. Doc NYC Review: ‘Teddy Pendergrass: If You Don’t Know Me By Now’ is a Captivating Ode to a R&B Legend
Born into a gang war zone in South Philly, Teddy Pendergrass would emerge as the king of the neighborhood. Guys wanted to be him, girls wanted to sleep with him, and everybody wanted to be in business with him. For all the things he did wrong, he did make several smart choices including hiring “super mensch” rock-n-roll manager Shep Gordon who helped transition Pendergrass from a star on the black R&B circuit with an informal economy into a superstar performing sensual “woman’s only” shows.

Teddy Pendergrass: If You Don’t Know Me is a nearly definitive biography that doesn’t shy away from the darker moments in his career as the soul singer starts to develop his voice. Told in part through 60 audio tapes that provide a first-hand account of growing up, being raised by a single mother, avoiding gangs in the neighborhood, and finding inspiration in live...
