    German art director, a 1911 graduate from the Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin. He began work as a theatrical set designer. His talent was noticed by Paul Wegener, who hired him to design sculptural constructs for Le golem (1914). Gliese is also remembered for building the monumental sets for Les finances du Grand-Duc (1924) and for the magnificent set he created on the Fox Hills backlot for F.W. Murnau's classic film L'aurore (1927).
