Rochus Gliese

  • German art director, a 1911 graduate from the Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin. He began work as a theatrical set designer. His talent was noticed by Paul Wegener, who hired him to design sculptural constructs for Le golem (1914). Gliese is also remembered for building the monumental sets for Les finances du Grand-Duc (1924) and for the magnificent set he created on the Fox Hills backlot for F.W. Murnau's classic film L'aurore (1927).

  • He was nominated for the Oscar for "Sunrise".
  • The director and art director Rochus Gliese was multitalent in the German film business. He studied at the State Museum for art and craft in Berlin.

  • His film activities dropped off in the 30's. His last movie as a director was "Die Jagd nach dem Glück" (30), as an art director and costume designer he worked for the productions "Amphitryon" (1935), "Der Tanz auf dem Vulkan" (1938) and "Hanna Amon" (1951).
