‘Sherlock & Daughter’ Team Talks Expanding the Universe After Season 1: ‘Crime Is Blissfully International’
Image
The second season of “Sherlock & Daughter,” which is in competition this week at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival and is on the CW and Max in the U.S., still awaits greenlight, but not for the lack of ideas.

“They would just come popping out, and there were far too many for just eight episodes. If the fates are good to us, there are so many wonderful stories to be told with these characters,” says writer Shelly Goldstein at the festival.

“Sherlock and Daughter” Courtesy of Starlings TV Distribution

Brendan Foley, writer and creator of the show, adds: “I think we’d like to take it international. At the end of the 19th century, society is moving from criminals robbing banks to criminals owning banks. Crime is blissfully international. I’d like to see what’s happening in the U.S., Europe, Australia at the same time. This great, glorious...

Sherlock & Daughter: Season One Ratings + Viewer Votes
Earlier this year, CBS launched the Watson TV series, a medical mystery series following a current-day version of Sherlock Holmes' best friend. It's performed very well in the ratings and has been renewed for a second season. Now, The CW has introduced a series about the legendary sleuth himself. How will it perform? Will Sherlock & Daughter be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.

A period mystery thriller series, the Sherlock & Daughter TV show is based on the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It stars David Thewlis, Blu Hunt, Ardal O'Hanlon, Fiona Glascott, and Aidan McArdle. In this story, Sherlock Holmes (Thewlis) is out of his comfort zone and has become embroiled in a malevolent conspiracy involving his archenemy, Professor Moriarty (Dougray Scott). The legendary sleuth is unable to investigate the sinister case without risking the...

‘Sherlock & Daughter’ Review: David Thewlis Is a Perfect Fit in The CW’s Modestly Amusing Spin on a Classic Franchise
Image
Of all the things this world absolutely needs more of (peace, love, common sense) it would be difficult to argue that another Sherlock Holmes adaptation ranks very high on the list. The great detective rarely goes long without getting reimagined yet again; it has, in fact, only been a few months since the Sherlock-based modern-day medical drama Watson, not to be confused with that other, older Sherlock-based modern-day medical drama House.

Now comes The CW’s Sherlock & Daughter, whose innovation on the mythology is right there in the title. As a mystery, it’s no great shakes; at least in the early episodes sent to critics, it’s missing that satisfying snap of clues falling into place in clever ways. But the Brendan Foley-created drama is bolstered by enough winning performances — starting with David Thewlis as the first half of that title — that it’s mostly just nice...

‘Harry Potter’ TV Series Officially Casts John Lithgow, Nick Frost, Janet McTeer & Paapa Essiedu Among 6
Image
Max’s Harry Potter TV series has officially cast four series regulars and two recurring roles, including four actors Deadline previously revealed: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The newly announced cast includes Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Whitehouse is the only actor cast thus far to have appeared in any of the original films. He played Sir Cadogan in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The franchise follows the life of a young wizard, the titular Harry Potter, whose parents died under mysterious circumstances when he was very young. He was forced to live a life of misery and servitude to his aunt and uncle and their awful son before he was freed from his gilded cage when Hagrid extended an invitation that changed his life forever.

If the rumors are believed to be true, the Ozark star, widely recognized for her commanding presence as Helen Pierce, would be following in the legendary footsteps of Dame Maggie Smith, who immortalized the role in the film saga.

They are poised to join John Lithgow, who, as Deadline reported exclusively, will be playing Professor Albus Dumbledore.

HBO declined comment. “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation,” the network said in a statement. “As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

The Harry Potter series, designed to run over a decade, comes from writer-showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content,...

Max Cancels Another Comedy Following Our Flag Means Death
Image
Max cancels the comedy, Julia, adding to the small number of comedies on its programming slate. The cancelation suggests Max may be shifting its focus to big franchises and other genres. The end of Julia reflects a broader trend of streaming services moving away from comedies.

Following the high-profile cancellation of Our Flag Means Death, Max has confirmed the cancellation of the comedy Julia. Premiering in March 2022, the Max show centers on Julia Child as she films her famous cooking show, The French Chef, during the 1960s and her relationship with her husband Paul (Frasier alum David Hyde Pierce). Sarah Lancashire plays the titular role in the series created by Daniel Goldfarb, with a cast that includes Bebe Neuwirth, Fran Kranz, Fiona Glascott, Brittany Bradford, Judith Light, Rachel Bloom, Isabella Rossellini, and James Cromwell, among others.

Julia: Book Editor Judith Jones Deserves a Spin-Off
Image
Max’s Julia Child biodrama is blessed with a deep bench of winning characters played by incredible actors. Aside from Julia (Sarah Lancashire) and her husband Paul (David Hyde-Pierce), there's Julia's best pal Avis (Bebe Neuwirth), the public-television producer who helped shepherd her show to the air (Brittany Bradford as Alice), her original French Chef director Russ (Fran Kranz), her new director Elaine (Rachel Bloom); the list goes on. But a special place at the table should be set for Julia's Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott), the book editor at the Knopf publishing house and the French Chef’s first great champion. She's a character so dynamic, self-possessed, and charismatic, that there seems only one thing left for her to do: leave Julia for a spin-off of her own.

Julia Child May Be the Most Famous Woman on ‘Julia,’ but She’s Far from the Only One
Image
The most audacious aspect of Max’s “Julia” (now in its second season) is that Julia Child might not be the most accomplished real-life character in it. That might be Bebe Neuwirth’s Avis DeVoto, who, with husband Bernard, helped save the national forests from the U.S. government. Or maybe it’s Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott), who pulled a book out of a slush pile and thus became responsible for publishing “The Diary of Anne Frank,” among other accomplishments that include the English translations of Sartre and Camus. Then again, it might be Blanche Knopf (Judith Light), the powerhouse publisher who co-founded Knopf with her husband and helped elevate the mystery genre to high art by publishing everyone from Dashiell Hammett to Ross Macdonald.

But in Episode 7, we meet Zephyr Wright (Deidrie Henry), President Johnson’s longtime housekeeper who came with the family to the White House — and helped push...

Sarah Lancashire, who delivers a stunning turn as iconic cook Julia Child, describes Christine as “the invisible me,” continuing, “I look like I’m doing it all, but I’m doing very little.” Watch the exclusive video above.

Christopher Nolan’s tentpole opens on July 21.

Universal has cancelled the red carpet at its upcoming New York premiere of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer on Monday (July 21) in light of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

“In support of the ongoing SAG strike, the filmmakers of Oppenheimer will not be proceeding with the NY premiere as originally planned and will instead screen the movie to celebrate the crew and craftspeople who contributed to making this landmark film,” the studio said on Friday.

The film will still screen, although Universal had not responded at time of writing to clarify who will be in attendance.

SAG-AFTRA Strike Already Impacting Film Festivals As Ireland’s Galway Fleadh Pulls Premiere Q&a With Matthew Modine; Actor Issues Rallying Cry: “Our Solidarity Is Our Strength”
Image
There is growing angst about the potential impact of the confirmed SAG strike on upcoming A-list festivals such as Venice and Toronto, but the industrial action is already having a tangible effect on festivals around the world with the Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland having to pull a Q&a tonight with actor Matthew Modine.

It becomes the first festival known to have a promotional event pulled because of the strike.

Modine, the one-time SAG president hopeful, was due to take part in the Q&a for movie The Martini Shot, which is debuting at the event, but the actor has removed himself from any further promotional activities. Co-star and fellow SAG member Fiona Glascott was also due to be taking part in the Q&a, we are told.

The plan at the moment we’re told by producers is for Modine, Glascott and co-stars to watch the movie “as...

Could the Galway Film Fleadh Be the First Festival Impacted if SAG-AFTRA Votes to Strike?
Image
With a SAG-AFTRA strike now looking certain, the eyes of festival publicity teams and programmers may be on Venice and Toronto as major upcoming events likely to be severely impacted should U.S. actors be prevented from promoting their movies as per strike rules.

But on the West coast of Ireland, a slightly smaller festival happens to be taking place right as the union’s National Board meets on Thursday to officially decide whether to call a work stoppage, a decision that could immediately affect the event’s screenings.

The 35th edition of the Galway Film Fleadh opened in the coastal city on Tuesday night with the world premiere of The Miracle Club, starring Maggie Smith, Kathy Burke and Laura Linney. While that screening was watched by a packed house at the Town Hall, another world premiere is happening on Thursday just hours after the critical vote, with its...

Brooklyn Ending, Explained
Image
The beautifully realized Oscar-nominated romantic drama Brooklyn, adapted from Colm Tóibín’s book of the same name, has a moving and thought-provoking ending. Saoirse Ronan stars in the adaptation as Eilis Lacey, a young Irish woman who emigrates to Brooklyn in the 1950s. While caught between two homes, Eilis finds herself in a love triangle with Tony (Emory Cohen), an Italian-American plumber in New York, and Jim (Domhnall Gleeson), a well-off suitor back in her hometown of Enniscorthy. Brooklyn was nominated for three Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Actress (for Ronan), and Best Adapted Screenplay – but sadly, in spite of its universal praise, it didn’t win any.

Named by the BBC as one of the 100 greatest films of the 21st century, Brooklyn is a heartwarming historical tale about what it means to call somewhere home. Ronan was already one of the most acclaimed actors of her generation, but Brooklyn...

The Biggest Plot Holes In The Fantastic Beasts Movies
Image
The Fantastic Beasts movies have failed to achieve the same approval as the Harry Potter series, with Secrets of Dumbledore performing the lowest at the Box Office so far. This has led many to question whether the franchise will continue since the likelihood that it would bomb makes a high film budget too risky.

It's hard to say precisely what it is about Newt's story in the wizarding world that isn't drawing audiences to the theaters. Some have speculated that politics had something to do with it since author J.K. Rowling herself has been in several uncomfortable headlines, and the infamous recasting of Johnny Depp's Gellert Grindelwald left many fans dedicated to boycotting. However, even if these real-world problems weren't involved, Fantastic Beasts has let down Harry Potter fans by punching holes in wizarding world canon. From the intricacies of wand lore to the involvement of characters like Minerva McGonagall in the 1930s,...

Judith Light on ‘Julia’ Season 2 and Keeping Blanche Knopf’s Big Secret
Image
HBO Max picked up “Julia” for a second season on Thursday, the same day its Season 1 finale dropped on the streamer. With that good news, fans of the Julia Child scripted series can rest assured they will be learning more about The French Chef herself (played by Sarah Lancashire) and the people who made her the icon she is in Season 2, including Judith Light’s Blanche Knopf.

The finale episode, titled “Chocolate Soufflé,” revealed the powerful co-founder and leader of publishing house Knopf is going blind, and only her mentee Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott), who was editor for Child, as well as novelists like John Updike at Knopf, knows about the dire situation.

Much like many other details depicted about these real-life people on the first season of “Julia,...
