We were disappointed when the Cannes lineup came out and Jim Jarmusch’s next film was not on it. But it seems like we just had to wait a little longer.
Efe Cakarel, the CEO of Mubi, which is distributing Jarmusch’s next movie, told a crowd at SXSW London that Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the main competition.
“That’s already confirmed,” he said during a keynote speech at the festival on Friday (via Variety). He also added one other movie joining the lineup that Mubi will be releasing, Paolo Sorrentino’s next movie “La Grazia” starring Toni Servillo.
Venice won’t announce its lineup for some time, but it’s an exciting get for the festival and could be the first of several high profile contenders on the Biennale. Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine” from A24 has been rumored,...

After a 14 year hiatus, the Final Destination franchise returned this year with Final Destination: Bloodlines – and movie-goers were clearly missing these movies, as Bloodlines has so far pulled in $193 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. One fan of the series is singer/songwriter Charli xcx, who took to TikTok to share her pitch for the next sequel, one that she envisions starring in alongside several “It Girl” actresses.
Charli xcx said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “I’m rewatching all of the Final Destination movies, in preparation to see Final Destination: Bloodlines, which I’m really excited to see. The reason I love these movies is that they really just are about hot people getting killed. You know, there’s no moral backbone to the story, it really is just, ‘They’re hot, they’re cursed and they deserve to die.

Singer/songwriter Charli xcx is working on building up her film acting career, and she’s going about it in a really interesting way. A couple of years ago, we heard that she was set to make her feature acting debut with Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death… and someday we might even get to see that movie, but as of right now it still doesn’t have a distributor. Since working on Faces of Death, Charli xcx has taken roles in the Gregg Araki thriller I Want Your Sex, Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist, Romain Gavras’s Sacrifice, Jeremy O. Harris and Pete Ohs’ Erupjca, and Julia Jackman’s graphic novel adaptation 100 Nights of Hero. By taking on these projects, she has worked alongside the likes of Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Jermaine Fowler, Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega,...

Marvel has likely never gotten as close to Prestige TV as it did with the Disney+ series WandaVision. The compelling emotional story, exceptional performances, and slow-burning twists and turns earned it a reputation that elevated the show above other popcorn superhero fare. Now the star of WandaVision, Elizabeth Olsen, is joining a pilot for FX called Seven Sisters, which is being penned by Succession writer and producer Will Arbery, according to Deadline.
The story of Seven Sisters is one of a large, tight-knit family that begins to unravel when a sister (Olsen) starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear, forcing each of them to confront long-buried secrets. This project also reunites Olson with director Sean Durkin, whose award-winning feature directorial debut,Martha Marcy May Marlene, starred Olson in her movie debut. Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso) has landed a role alongside John Cena and Jessica Biel in Apple’s live-action Matchbox film from Skydance and Mattel Films.
While the film is inspired by Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line of the same name, there’s no word yet on who Richardson is playing.
The Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox. When his daughter’s school friends, too, began clamoring for a “matchbox car,” an enduring brand was born. The high standards of authenticity for Matchbox die-cast cars have driven the brand for over 70 years and generations of fans. Today, two Matchbox cars are sold every second somewhere around the world.

After crafting the best film of 2023 with The Beast, Bertrand Bonello is prepping his next feature. While he was tight-lipped on details, he tells Variety, “It’s a little early to talk about it. It’s going to be very different. It’s going to be completely different. The writing is finished, and we’re going to start the casting process. I’m going to announce it once the casting is done. I hope to start shooting next September.” Speaking about how cinema is changing, he added, “This mutation is freaky and fascinating. If you don’t involve it in your creation, you’re out. It’s always an equilibrium. You must protect the past and welcome the future. If you just welcome the future, you’re lost in the movement. If you protect the past, you’re out now.”

French filmmaker Romain Gavras, whose previous credits include the drama Our Day Will Come, the crime comedy The World Is Yours, and the thriller Athena, is set to make his English-language debut with a new film called Sacrifice, and he has assembled a jaw-dropping cast for it. Deadline reports that Sacrifice, which is described as having “a similar combustible and propulsive anarchy” to Athena while being “closer to satire,” is set to star Chris Evans (Avengers: Endgame), Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Salma Hayek Pinault (Magic Mike’s Last Dance), and Brendan Fraser (The Whale).
Scripted by Gavras and Will Arbery (who won a WGA award for working on Succession), Sacrifice will show us what happens when a high end charity gala is raided by a violent group of radicals on a mystical quest to fulfill a prophecy. The script was just sent out to talent four days ago,...

Fierce protests: The 2024 Cannes Film Festival opens in less than a fortnight and is once again set to be the backdrop to fierce French labor protests. Zac revealed earlier this week that a collection of around 200 French film festival workers — a combination of Cannes workers and workers from other festivals across France — are planning protests during the event over pay. The group’s frustrations are two-fold: they are first rallying against the pay packages they receive from their employers, which they say are inadequate and do not account for arduous overtime hours frequently clocked due to job demands, while the second bone of contention is France’s unique unemployment insurance program for entertainment workers and technicians. Known as Intermittence de Spectacle, the scheme supports entertainment workers on...

Exclusive: Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek Pinault and Brendan Fraser will star in Sacrifice, a film co-written and to be directed by Romain Gavras. Like his last film Athena that premiered last Venice and was released on Netflix, Sacrifice has a similar combustible and propulsive anarchy coursing through the film.
This is closer to satire, but the script by Gavras and Will Arbery was strong enough to compel the leads to commit over the span of four days since the script was sent to talent. More actors will be set shortly, and I expect that the project — CAA Media Finance is selling the world with Rocket Science — won’t have a lot of territories left by the time buyers hit the Croisette. All the elements are there to launch Gavras as a major writer-director, here making his first English-language film.

For movies about killer spiders, the things that are generally of primary concern are the size and the volume of the spiders. With that in mind, connoisseurs of this horror subgenre should be pleased to find that Sébastien Vaniček’s feature-length debut, Infested, delivers on both of those fronts. While the spiders here, a highly poisonous and aggressive desert species, may initially emerge at a deceptively normal size, they gradually balloon to larger proportions as they overwhelm an apartment block in a French banlieue. They’re also a rapidly reproducing breed, to the point where their offspring and their offspring’s offspring are eventually scampering all over the building’s walls, ceilings, air ducts, and residents.
In expected creature-feature form, Infested is quick to explain how these deadly arachnids made their journey to an unfamiliar urban environment. Following a frenzied opening in a patch of Middle Eastern desert where three...

Alex Garland’s speculative and apolitical action film might be a box office hit but it’s a frustratingly weightless experience
The music video for Mia’s Born Free imagines a ginger genocide, with humvees of jackbooted, gas-masked stormtroopers raiding a high-rise housing complex to round up redheads. Even before the condemned are bussed out to the desert and used for target practice, the camerawork luxuriates in extreme content – needless collateral brutalization, a slow-mo closeup of a man smoking from a glass stem, a harsh coitus interruptus for a nude couple. All the while, a driving synth loop and kinetic cinematography keep things moving at a brisk, exciting clip befitting the high-energy banger at hand; one of the goons mugs through the fourth wall and lip-syncs a “whoo!” in time with the track.

Singer Dua Lipa, who has been reported to be dating British actor and model Callum Turner, has now opened up about the influences of love splits on her life.
“I think overall, (dating) is just a little confusing. It’s either through friends of friends or people you trust where you can meet new people, because (dating) is not really so straightforward when you are, I guess, a public person,” she told Rolling Stone magazine.
She added: “I’ve had break-ups in my life where I felt like the only kind of break-up you could have was when things just ended really badly. Things ending in a nice way was such a new thing… it taught me a lot.”
Her remarks appear to be a reference to her split from her French boyfriend Romain Gavras, 42, the son of acclaimed film director Costa-Gavras. Reports began circulating in December the pair had...

While they were seen making separate exits out of the theater, they later went out for dinner together and were photographed alongside each other.
The sighting comes amid comments that Dua made about her recent breakup, presumably from French filmmaker Romain Gavras, who she dated in early 2023.

Once upon a time, there was a virtual gathering place where minds from all walks of life would congregate together to share ideas, memes, opinions, (an unflinching amount of vitriol), and breaking news without the filter of a corporate owner. There were even little distinctive markings so members could differentiate between a random person screaming into the void and an authenticated, certified professional.
And then, tragedy struck. A wealthy albeit embarrassingly insecure wannabe leader purchased the gathering place to turn it into a personal praise circle, dismantling the culture that was working well, and replacing it with chaos. Suddenly, it became much more difficult to determine whether or not something being shouted in the gathering place was based in fact or just the unfiltered thoughts of blabbering fools. This is precisely why in 2022, people mistakenly took a scene from the Netflix film "Athena" as an act of political unrest.

First look review: the award-winning director of Cannes hit Les Misérables returns with a muddled and blunt-edged film about underprivileged Parisians
The films of Ladj Ly, heir apparent to the mantle of France’s street-level cinéma de banlieue, land with the force of molotov cocktails – scorching, destructive and imprecise. His narrative debut Les Misérables took the jury prize at Cannes for its viscerally rendered tensions between immigrant populations and brutal police squads in the state-forsaken suburbs, undercut by a noncommittal final tableau that implicitly asked why we can’t all just get along. He co-authored the script for longtime friend Romain Gavras’s drama Athena, which applied a similar formal elan to a clash between the penniless disaffected and the riot cops, then concluded with another ambiguous partial exoneration for the aggressors. The reporter pointed out that many people are unsure whether they want kids these days, questioning whether that’s “because the world has become too dangerous and the future seems too bleak.”

Dua Lipa seems to have new love in her life. The "Barbie" star was first linked to French director Romain Gavras in February, and the pair made their romance red carpet official at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The news about Gavras emerged a few months after Lipa revealed that she'd been enjoying the single life. She spoke about her relationship status in an Oct. 7, 2022, episode of her podcast "Dua Lipa: At Your Service" while interviewing Charli Xcx for the iHeartRadio original series. "For me, this is the first year I've not been in a relationship for a very long time," Lipa revealed.
"It's been really great to just be alone and only think about myself and kind of be quite selfish."
After Charli Xcx got real about her grounded relationship with George Daniel, drummer of The 1975, Lipa shared, "It's been really great to...

Though at the time of this writing, the 2023 riots in France have decreased in intensity, it proves downright eerie how much Romain Gavras’s Netflix released Athena predicted the civil unrest seen mere weeks ago. Protests initially began in front of police headquarters, only to soon escalate into riots that set the nation ablaze, particularly after video evidence contradicted the testimonies of the police officers involved. The events recall a number of protests against police brutality worldwide, particularly the George Floyd protests that began in 2020 at the start of lockdown measures in the wake of Covid-19. Los Angeles, July 10 (Ians) Singer-songwriter Dua Lipa shocked eagle-eyed fans as they spotted an X-rated detail in the background of her recent selfie.
The 27-year-old shared a snap on social media, showing her posing in front of a mirror in her bathroom, reports Mirror.co.uk.
The ‘One Kiss’ hitmaker pulled up her t-shirt to show off her abs and black lacy underwear, but it wasn’t her body that fans were concentrating on. Some of her followers were quick to spot handprints on the steam covered glass shower door, prompting many to suggest she had made the marks with boyfriend Romain Gavras.
“There was nothing clean going on in that shower from what I see,” one cheekily commented. “How did this happen?” another asked. “Why she gotta leave up the shower marks,” one wrote.
