Looking back on its 50th anniversary, it's hard to imagine slipping anything extra into "Jaws." To even suggest adding anything to Steven Spielberg's perfect film would be like nails on a chalkboard. And yet, there is one significant subplot from Peter Benchley's original book, on which the film is based, that Spielberg quite rightfully omitted. In addition to the battle between the film's three leads and a human-eating machine, Benchley's novel contained something far more scandalous and sordid -- something that's never even hinted at in the movie version. It's a threat that creeps right up the beaches of Amity Island and onto Chief Brody's (Roy Scheider in Spielberg's film) doorstep: a romantic affair between his wife and the educated outsider Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss).
Initially, in Benchley's version of the story, the stark social divide between Brody and the beach-based business owners of Amity contrasts sharply with...

Stephen Spielberg's "Jaws" created the summer blockbuster in 1975. Taking over movie theaters across the world and traumatizing an entire generation, it forced people everywhere to think twice before stepping into the ocean (lest they become shark food).
The story of one town slowly unraveling as it's beset by a hungry human-eating great white shark terrified audiences with its spectacular photography, ominous score, and endearing performances. It also made Spielberg a household name and has, across the span of 50 years, grossed over $484 million at the box office thanks to its initial run and subsequent theatrical revival screenings.
With such ripping success, sequels were inevitably going to happen, and Universal Pictures was happy to throw chum into the water, giving audiences three more shark-infested films. They are as follows:
"Jaws" (1975) "Jaws 2" (1978) "Jaws 3" aka "Jaws 3D" (1983) "Jaws: The Revenge" (1987)
Unfortunately, none of these "Jaws" sequels ever get close to the magic of Spielberg's original,...

Sequels are often the source of major excitement because of the prospect of getting more of an amazing set of characters or an immersive world. However, the same prospect can lead to skepticism, because sequels often have the potential to disappoint viewers by trying to recreate the magic of the original to no avail. The most disappointing movie sequels of the 2010s all have this issue of lacking the depth of the original film, blatantly trying to ride the success of the first movie without being creative or original.
Even trying to be different can have its drawbacks, as demonstrated by the bad movie sequels that missed the point of the original film. The potential of more entertaining stories in a beloved world with an equally beloved group of characters often puts a lot of pressure on a sequel. This is why so many sequels have failed to live up to the hype surrounding them.

Steven Spielberg is one of the most prolific filmmakers of the latter half of the 20th and 21st centuries. Behind amazing projects like Jaws and Jurassic Park, which changed how people talk about blockbusters and theatrical releases forever, Spielberg has also been deeply interested in stories about World War II. Spielberg's early upbringing was colored by the impact of WWII, like most Americans during these years. This was because he was born in 1946. It makes sense that this experience colored his later projects, as many filmmakers attempt to bring large parts of their childhood to life onscreen.
There are many great movies Spielberg produced but didn't direct within multiple genres, but he helmed almost every film project involving World War II. In recent years, he's continued moving into the producer role in television as well as cinema. Spielberg co-created the hit miniseries Band of Brothers with Tom Hanks, which was...

Jaws made us all afraid to go in the water (unfairly giving the world a phobia of sharks) when it was released in 1975. Now, one of its original stars, Richard Dreyfuss, is saying "let's do it again!" Dreyfuss stars in the crazy new horror film, Into the Deep. Alongside Halloween's Scout Taylor-Compton, the first trailer teases the underwater carnage. But, if a shark with a lust for blood wasn't enough to terrify you, why not throw in some pirates just for the hell of it? Check out the new trailer for Into the Deep below!
You heard that right. While a giant great white shark lurks in the waters below, pirates roam the seas above, leaving Taylor-Compton caught between a rock and a hard place. Directed by Christian Sesma, (Section 8), Taylor-Compton plays Cassidy Branham, the embodiment of everyone's fears after watching Jaws for the first time. After her father was...

While the fourth installment in the Jaws franchise, Jaws: The Revenge, may not have been well-received by critics or fans, one of its stars says he isnt mad about having been in the film, which has a 2% on Rotten Tomatoes. Sir Michael Caine, in an excerpt from his new memoir, Dont Look Back, Youll Trip Over My Guide to Life, published in The Times, talked a bit about the 1987 film.
When people say to me, That was the worst film Ive ever seen! Id say, Probably, but it paid for a beautiful house for my mother, so whats your problem? Caine writes in his book. The movie didn't seem to hurt Caine's career, as he went on to win two Oscars and starred in films like The Dark Knight trilogy, The Prestige, Inception, and Now You See Me.

The 1970s were truly an extraordinary time for movie comedies, as many incredible films broke down social and political boundaries. This was an era where it became possible to joke about subjects related to sex and vulgarity that had previously been off-limits, and many iconic comedians became household names. While this was the decade in which filmmakers like Mel Brooks and Woody Allen took Hollywood by storm, even those acclaimed directors had some comedies that barely anyone remembers today.
The very best comedies of the 1970s have remained beloved classics that film lovers rewatch and enjoy countless times over. However, when digging deep to rediscover some long-forgotten hidden gems, it's striking just how many underappreciated releases with stars like John Belushi, Jack Nicholson, and Gene Wilder there are out there for those willing to wade through the rough. Although there are some 1970s comedies that have been forgotten for a reason,...

I remember the moment I first started to realize how much control a director has over a movie — when I learned they consciously choose the colors that go into their movies. This is when it clicked for me that movies are moving images, first and foremost. The images aren't just a canvas on which to tell a story, they are the story and should reinforce themes, mood, etc. as much as any dialogue or narrative beat does.
Mike Mignola, the famed comic writer/artist and creator of Hellboy, has one of my favorite explanations of how visual artists use color as a storytelling tool. "My original artwork, I really like in black-and-white, but when I'm telling a story, color is such an important tool [...] for the most part I'm much more comfortable doing work where I know color is going to be there," he said.

Spielberg's Jaws balances horror and personal drama perfectly, creating an intense and iconic masterpiece of cinema. Nolan's The Dark Knight revolutionizes superhero movies with thrilling action and Heath Ledger's legendary Joker performance. Miyazaki's Spirited Away showcases the potential of animation with a gorgeous, enchanting story that appeals to all ages.
While all movies generate a swirl of conflicting opinions, there are some movies which people generally agree are flawless from beginning to end. Some might argue that perfection is an impossible standard, especially in an art form measured in emotion and personal connection. However, a more generous definition of perfection could suggest that there are plenty of "perfect" movies. If a movie sets out to achieve all that it aims for, no matter what genre it is, it could be described as perfect.

Steven Spielberg's classic blockbuster Jaws is heading to Netflix in September, and the sequels will also be coming to the platform. The movie was based on Peter Benchley's book, which was published just one year before Spielberg released his breakout movie. While the director previously worked on Duel (1971) and The Sugarland Express (1974), it was Jaws that made him the famous creator he is today.

Zack Snyder's first major comic book adaptation, 300, is coming to Netflix soon. A historical epic based on the comic book by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, it tells the story of the Battle of Thermopylae, where a small group of Spartans stood against Persia's forces to defend the whole of Greece. While the story is an entirely fantastical version of the actual battle, it became a box office hit, earning $456 million on a budget of just $65 million. 300 also saw largely positive reviews from critics and exceptional audience responses.
With an all-star cast, consisting of Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Michael Fassbender, and more, the acting has only become more acclaimed over the years. Jaws, the horror classic that generated the term "blockbuster" in 1975, is returning to Netflix. Not only is Spielberg's first film of the franchise being added to the streaming platform, but the sequels Jaws 2 (1978) and Jaws 3-D (1983) will also be available. The only movie not joining them is the critically panned 1987 entry, Jaws: The Revenge. However, we're pretty sure not many will be pleading for that, as it's often considered one of the worst movies of all time.

Shark Week may be more than one month in the rearview mirror, but shark fans just got an exciting update. The first three Jaws movies, Jaws, Jaws 2, and Jaws 3-D, will begin streaming on Netflix starting September 1. The first Jaws is largely regarded as the best the franchise has to offer, with acclaimed director Steven Spielberg coming on board to direct, with Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Lorraine Gary all starring in the film. The screenplay for the first film was written by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. As for Jaws 2, Benchley and Gottlieb returned to write the script along with Howard Sackler, but Jeannot Szwarc stepped into Spielberg's shoes to direct. Benchley and Gottlieb were joined by Richard Matheson, Guedron Trueblood, and Michael Kane as scribes for the threequel, which was helmed by Joe Alves.

One of the greatest blockbusters ever made -- and a couple of its sequels -- are headed to Netflix just in time for the fall season. Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic "Jaws" is headed to Netflix in September as part of the streamer's offerings for the month, alongside 1978's "Jaws 2" and 1983's "Jaws 3-D." That means subscribers will be able to watch the franchise nearly in its entirety, save for the fourth and final entry in the series, "Jaws: The Revenge." That may not be much of a loss though as it is widely regarded as the worst entry in the "Jaws" franchise.
Beginning September 1, the first three "Jaws" films will be available on Netflix. The films had a home on the streamer last year as well, but they were removed in December. In the streaming era as it exists, movies tend to bounce around on various services. Now, they're headed back to Netflix,...

The billion-dollar franchise of Jurassic Park started as a ’90s classic regaling fans with the adventurous theme park of genetically engineered dinosaurs, sprouting six feature-length films in its wake. And long before you knew it, the Steven Spielberg creation became a pop culture phenomenon.

Jaws broke new ground when it was released in 1975. It had special effects the world had never seen before, and the score made viewers feel instantly anxious and alert. The relatable characters also made Jaws a resounding success. Without a doubt, it remains one of the most celebrated and well-respected horror movies ever released. For those unfamiliar, the movie is about a beach town called Amity Island that is terrorized by a brutal great white shark. A hunter named Sam Quint (Robert Shaw) offers to catch the brute for $100,000. An oceanographer named Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Amity Island's chief, Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), round out the crew looking for the shark.
When Jaws came out in 1975, audiences were blown away by the practical effects used to create the shark. Millions of people were haunted by the signature score created by John Williams, to the point where taking a bath didn't even seem safe.
