Erle Stanley Gardner

Why Burt Reynolds Left Gunsmoke
Image
Before Burt Reynolds went on to have a legendary and illustrious career on the silver screen, he first made his reputation doing television. He appeared in a myriad of shows between 1959 and 1972. He had one-episode roles in such classic shows as "The Twilight Zone," Erle Stanley Gardner's "Perry Mason," and Lee Marvin's "M Squad." Yet one of his most memorable recurring roles was arguably in Charles Marquis Warren's western drama, "Gunsmoke" (based on John Meston and Norman Macdonnell's radio series of the same name), which ran on CBS for an outstanding 20 (!) years between 1955 and 1975. Compared to today's TV Westerns, which are lucky if they last more than two seasons, that's an astonishing accomplishment for the unapologetically honest series.

Out of those 20 seasons, Reynolds starred in three, from 1962 to 1965, as Quint Asper, a half-white and half-Comanche blacksmith, introduced as the member of Angela Clarke's Topsanah's tribe...

Robert McGinnis, Creator of Iconic James Bond Posters, Dies at 99
Image
Painter and illustrator Robert E. McGinnis, who created sexy posters for the James Bond franchise as well as numerous other films, magazine illustrations and book covers, died March 10 in Old Greenwich, Conn. He was 99.

McGinnis, whose death was posted on Legacy.com, was known for his swinging sixties pin-up girl-style images of bikini-clad women consorting with manly men. Models including Shere Hite, author of “The Hite Report,” modeled for the idealized figure that became known as “The McGinnis Woman.”

His first movie poster was for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” featuring the illustration of Audrey Hepburn smoking a cigarette in a long holder with her cat wrapped around her neck. He used his wife and family cat as models. “You didn’t have to do much with her. She’s so perfect,” he reportedly said about Hepburn.

The posters McGinnis designed for James Bond movies included “Thunderball,” “You Only Live Twice,” “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,...

10 Classic Murder Mystery TV Shows That Still Surprise Us Today
Image
Murder mysteries make up some of the most bingeable genres, from their eccentric casts of characters to complex plot lines full of shocking twists and turns. In fact, many of the most successful modern TV shows are either full-blown murder mysteries or contain elements of the murder mystery in their plot. After all, mysteries like Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, Netflix's The Perfect Couple, and Hulu's Under the Bridge, have all released new seasons this year alone.

But the genius of the murder mystery existed long before these modern renditions, starting with several classics that continue to impress viewers with their wit and well-developed characters. Jessica Fletcher from Murder, She Wrote and Poirot from Agatha Christie: Poirot, are beloved detectives who have appeared in several adaptations and sequels over the years. Along with these strong leading characters, classic murder mysteries were also surprisingly ahead of their time.

Remembering Raymond Burr on 30th Anniversary of ‘Perry Mason’ Star’s Death
Image
When Raymond Burr passed away at age 76 on September 12, 1993, he was in the midst of a career resurgence. The Emmy-winning Perry Mason star who ruled the courtroom with style and smarts from 1957 to 1966, was once again playing novelist Erle Stanley Gardner’s brilliant, benevolent defense attorney in a series of TV movies with original costar Barbara Hale. He’d even reunited with the gang from his 1967-75 police drama Ironside for a telefilm that year. Thirty years after the charismatic actor’s death from cancer, and more than 65 years after the show’s premiere, Perry Mason remains a fixture on nostalgia channels like MeTV and Fetv, and streaming services such as Paramount+ and Freevee. Streamer Pluto TV even hosts a channel that plays the series round the clock. Burr is so identified with that iconic role that it can be disarming to see him out of character, as in these clips,...

Perry Mason Canceled At HBO; Will Not Be Getting Renewed For Season 3
Image
In a surprising turn of events, HBO chose not to renew the revival of classic series Perry Mason for its third season. ‘Perry Mason’ Canceled at HBO After Two Seasons
Image
“Perry Mason” has been canceled at HBO, Variety has confirmed. The series debuted its second and final season at the premium cabler in March.

“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of ‘Perry Mason’ for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.”

Based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, Matthew Rhys starred in the series in the title role. Unlike the 1950’s TV series in which Mason worked as a lawyer, the HBO series portrays the character earlier in his life when he is a private investigator in Los Angeles in the 1930s.

Along with Rhys, the Season 2 cast also included: Juliet Rylance,...

Perry Mason Season 3 Chances Addressed By Showrunner After That Big Finale
Image
The co-showrunner of Perry Mason offers an update on season 3 after that big finale. In the second installment of the HBO drama, which is based on the character created by Erle Stanley Gardner and takes place in the 1930s, Matthews Rhys returns in the title role. Consisting of eight episodes, Perry Mason season 2 focuses on the death of a notable society figure. When the district attorney places the blame on the most obvious and ostracized suspects, Mason and his team work together and slowly uncover a wide-reaching conspiracy.

In an interview with TVLine following the conclusion of Perry Mason season 2, co-showrunner Michael Begler addressed the drama's future. Perry Mason has not been renewed, but Begler struck an optimistic tone and noted that "there’s so much story to tell with these characters." Begler, who serves as showrunner alongside Jack Amiel, also gave a general update on when HBO might make...

Perry Mason's Mark O'Brien Unknowingly Manifested His Season 2 Role
Image
It's become something of a cliché that, when in doubt, a studio or network simply needs to go the dark and gritty route in remaking an old IP and modernizing it for a new audience -- whether it fits the material or not. In decades past, old-school detective procedurals were all the rage on cable television. Oftentimes, these episodic and formula-driven shows kept the violence and gore entirely off-screen, instead focusing on the central private eye and his (it was always a "him") investigators as they sought to discover the truth and save the day for their innocent clients.

The original "Perry Mason" absolutely fell under that umbrella, airing on CBS back in the mid 1950s to the late 1960s and based on author Erle Stanley Gardner's detective novels (who was also a credited writer on the series many times). Led by actor Raymond Burr as the eponymous criminal defense lawyer,...

Why William Hopper's Turn As Paul Drake On Perry Mason Remains One Of His Best Performances
Image
William Hopper, the actor who played the stalwart private detective Paul Drake on the hit 1957 legal drama "Perry Mason," was a notoriously prolific smoker, often seen with a cigarette hanging from his lips on camera. In 1970, Hopper suffered a stroke and succumbed to smoking-related health issues a month later. He was 55 years old.

As Paul Drake, Hopper was a cynic, a more grizzled presence built to balance Perry Mason's serious intellect. He was the Dr. McCoy to Perry Mason's Spock. For those unfamiliar with the series, "Perry Mason" was about a Los Angeles defense lawyer, played brilliantly by Raymond Burr, who was always careful to investigate the clients he was hired to defend. Typically, innocent people came to Mason, and he was always curious about the details of their case. Mason would always face off against the L.A. District Attorney Hamilton Burger (William Talman), who never won a case against him.

Juliet Rylance Knew Perry Mason Season 2 Would Set High Stakes For Della Street
Image
Since his first appearance in Erle Stanley Gardner's 1933 book "The Case of the Velvet Claws," Perry Mason has remained consistently popular due to several film, TV, and radio adaptations. But when HBO decided to reboot the private investigator turned criminal defense lawyer for the 21st century, they naturally put a new spin on the character and those around him. The hardboiled, pulpy debut season of "Perry Mason" ended with Matthew Rhys' P.I. embracing the role of a lawyer for which he's so well known, accompanied by his new lead investigator Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) and legal assistant turned co-counsel Della Street (Juliet Rylance).

But rather than Drake being the droll P.I. of previous iterations, the HBO show's version is a conflicted and embattled former LAPD street cop, struggling to support his family and navigate the treacherous landscape of a deeply racist 1930s Los Angeles. And whereas the...

Playing Perry Mason's Paul Drake Is A Double-Edged Sword For Chris Chalk
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Perry Mason" seasons 1 and 2.

It was only a matter of time until "Perry Mason" got a gritty reboot. HBO brought the Pi-turned-attorney into the streaming age in 2020, and along with him came a host of characters familiar to fans of author Erle Stanley Gardner's original books and the many TV and radio adaptations that have cropped up over the years. But one inspired change the HBO version made was to make Mason's lead investigator Paul Drake an African American LAPD officer who eventually becomes a Pi.

Starting out as a uniformed street cop, by the end of the first season, Drake, played by Chris Chalk, hands in his badge and gun, quitting the LAPD in emphatic style. This sets him up to replace Shea Whigham's Pete Strickland as Mason's right-hand man. With Mason (Matthew Rhys), Drake, and former assistant Della Street (Juliet Rylance...

Perry Mason's Anita St. Pierre Is Based On A Real-Life Hollywood Figure
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Perry Mason" through season 2, episode 5, "Chapter Thirteen."

In its first season, HBO's pulpy, hardboiled version of "Perry Mason" introduced us to a version of Erle Stanley Gardner's famous criminal lawyer who had yet to become the formidable figure we know from previous iterations of the character. In this show, Mason is a war vet and private investigator who struggles with horrific memories of his wartime mercy killings, fights to keep hold of his family's farm, and reluctantly takes on the role of attorney after John Lithgow's E.B. Jonathan takes his own life. It's all a bit grim, really.

But with season 2, "Perry Mason" has put supporting characters front and center. While the gritty, somber tone is still there, the violence has been toned down a bit, and there are some genuine moments of joy. Many of those moments come from Juliet Rylance...

Sharon Acker, Actress in ‘Point Blank’ and ‘Perry Mason,’ Dies at 87
Image
Sharon Acker, the Canadian actress who portrayed Lee Marvin’s unfaithful wife in the 1967 neo-noir classic Point Blank and the right-hand woman Della Street opposite Monte Markham on a rebooted Perry Mason in the 1970s, has died. She was 87.

Acker died March 16 in a retirement home in her native Toronto, her daughter Kim Everest, a casting director, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Star Trek fans know Acker for her January 1969 turn as Odona, a desperate woman from an overpopulated planet, on the third-season episode “The Mark of Gideon.”

She also starred on a 1976-77 CBS adaptation of Executive Suite, playing the wife of Mitchell Ryan‘s Dan Walling. (Acker and Ryan assumed the parts performed by William Holden and June Allyson in the 1954 MGM film directed by Robert Wise.)

The Simple Reason Matthew Rhys Considers Perry Mason Such An Easy Role
Image
Back in 2020, HBO took author Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason and gave him the prestige drama treatment. The character, originally created in the 1930s, had already been adapted for film, TV, and radio numerous times in the decades since his novels became popular, but HBO's effort brought him into the streaming age while remaining faithful to his origins. The streamer wisely gave the private detective turned lawyer a harsher, more adult spin, and now, Season 2 of the decidedly gritty "Perry Mason" is upon us. And with season 1 providing a satisfying origin story for Mason, there's plenty of stories left to tell.

But it isn't just the irresistibly uncompromising glimpse under the carapace of 1930s Los Angeles that made this series so compelling. Star Matthew Rhys gives a suitably weary yet layered performance in the lead role that adds much in the way of dimension to the story of a...

Perry Mason's Matthew Rhys Knows What He'd Like To See In Season 3 (If It Happens)
Image
For nearly a century, defense attorney Perry Mason has been the fictional face of the wrongly accused, a crusader for justice who's determined to clear his clients' names using every trick in the book. The character was first created by author Erle Stanley Gardner, whose works were adapted into a radio show and, eventually, the formative CBS courtroom drama starring Raymond Burr. No matter the circumstances, the Perry Mason of the halcyon days of television could rise to the occasion.

But television has changed a lot since the 1960s, and so has Perry Mason. HBO's reboot of the series, now in its second season, stars Matthew Rhys as a version of the attorney who's both deeply jaded — there's a noirish tone to the updated show — and deeply committed to the cause of justice. A bit like Atticus Finch if he had a death wish and a penchant for dramatic courtroom reveals,...

Celebrating 90 years of Perry Mason
Image
Erle Stanley Gardner’s brilliant and savvy criminal defense attorney Perry Mason has been on the case since 1933’s “The Case of the Velvet Claws.” The attorney describes himself in that first novel as a “lawyer who has specialized in trial work, and in a lot of criminal work…I’m a specialist on getting people out of trouble.”

Inspired by the famed Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Earl Rogers who only lost three of his 77 murder trials, Mason was featured in 82 novels and four short stories, six Warner Bros. murder mystery movies, a long-running radio series, the beloved 1957-66 CBS series starring Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale as his true-blue assistant Della Street, movies and a 1973-74 series with Monte Markham. Matthew Rhys (“The Americans” ) plays the latest incarnation in HBO’s stylish “Perry Mason” series, currently in its second season.

Set during the Great Depression, the HBO drama has a real “Chinatown” feel,...

In a Lonely Place: How ‘Perry Mason’ Tweaks Its Cinematography for a New Season of Noirish Mysteries
Image
In its first season, HBO’s “Perry Mason” received Emmy and ASC award nominations for David Franco’s exquisitely atmospheric cinematography, which avoided the desaturated look so common to period shows and evoked the 1930s by referencing early color still photography. One might have thought it would be difficult to improve upon the look established by Franco and alternating cinematographer Darran Tiernan, but the new season of “Perry Mason” that premiered March 6 is even more vivid and involving thanks to slight changes in color and a more subjective approach to the camerawork.

When the gritty origin story of Erle Stanley Gardner’s defense attorney premiered in 2020, cinematographer Eliot Rockett was one of its fans. Now, he joins the series — along with showrunners Jack Amiel and Michael Begler — for Season 2, lensing the premiere and alternating subsequent episodes with Tiernan and John Grillo. “I thought the first season was great, so there...

'Perry Mason' Season 1 Recap: How Did the Pi Become an Attorney?
Image
A nascent law firm just trying to make ends meet. A borderline alcoholic attorney struggling with the disappointing turn his life has taken. A city drowning in corruption. A murdered businessman, and two brothers (wrongfully?) accused of the crime. These are the elements that make up the second season of HBO’s Perry Mason, which is finally arriving on TV and streaming after a three-year-long wait. Starring Matthew Rhys as the titular private-eye-turned-defense-lawyer, and Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk as his associates Della Street and Paul Drake, the neo-noir series based on the character first made famous by author Erle Stanley Gardner reaches its sophomore run as sharp as ever. But as fans are once again glued to their seats, dying to know what tricks Mason will pull out of his sleeve to solve the crime of the season, it is also important to remember how we got here in the first place.

Matthew Rhys in Perry Mason (2020)
‘Perry Mason’ Producers Susan Downey and Michael Begler on the New Season: ‘It Was All About Character’ (Video)
Matthew Rhys in Perry Mason (2020)
“Perry Mason” is back. And we talked to the cast and producers about where the show is headed this season – and beyond (you can watch the interview above).

After the new iteration of the classic series debuted in 2020 as a limited series on HBO, the cable network decided to bring it back, this time as a (potentially) ongoing show. Matthew Rhys, Juliet Rylance, Shea Whigham and Chris Chalk are all back, as is the corruption, vice, murder, political intrigue and far-reaching conspiratorial nature of the original run of episodes.

This time Mason is defending a pair of young Mexican men who are accused of killing a wealthy socialite and the son of a powerful Los Angeles business. Of course, when Mason (and his team) start to dig, they uncover something far more sinister.

Image
Perry Mason returns for season 2 nearly three years after it first debuted on HBO. After creators and showrunners Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald stepped down, Jack Amiel and Michael Begler stepped in to work alongside executive producers Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. Perry Mason stars Matthew Rhys as the title character initially created by Erle Stanley Gardner. Joining him are Juliet Rylance as Della Street and Chris Chalk as Paul Drake.

The trio, which came together at the end of season 1, will find themselves in a bit of a rut when season 2 begins, but Perry, Della, and Paul will quickly be swept up in another murder trial that will shake Los Angeles to its core. Perry Mason season 2 features several additions to its cast, including Hope Davis, Katherin Waterston, Paul Raci, Sean Astin, and Mark O'Brien. Justin Kirk, Eric Lange, and Diarra Kilpatrick reprise their roles from season 1.

Roush Review: A 1930s ‘Perry Mason’ Pursues ‘Illusion of Justice’ in Season 2
Image
Three years ago, I championed HBO’s bold decision to reinvent Erle Stanley Gardner’s iconic hero Perry Mason as a downtrodden, chronically rumpled gumshoe turned lawyer in Depression-era L.A. As played with forlorn pugnacity by Matthew Rhys, as if channeling the cinematic spirits of Bogart and Mitchum, the new/old Perry Mason felt like he fit into the film noir world of legends like Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. Perry’s first-season redemption arc made for compelling TV, but heavy-handed storytelling lets him down in Perry Mason’s long-awaited but disappointing comeback. Lured back to criminal law to defend Latino brothers from a Hooverville slum being railroaded for the murder of an oil-family scion, Perry enlists his lesbian partner Della Street (Juliet Rylance) and Black investigator Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) ...

Perry Mason Season 2 TV Review
Image
Plot: Months after the Dodson case has come to an end, the scion of a powerful oil family is brutally murdered. When the Da goes to the city’s Hoovervilles to pinpoint the most obvious of suspects, Perry, Della, and Paul find themselves at the center of a case that will uncover far reaching conspiracies and force them to reckon with what it truly means to be guilty.

Review: When Perry Mason debuted in 2020, it was as a limited series. The stellar whodunit introduced a new generation to a grittier take on Erle Stanley Gardner’s iconic literary creation previously associated with Raymond Burr’s performance. Matthew Rhys brought a different edge to Mason alongside Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk as Della Street and Paul Drake. Thanks to critical acclaim, HBO decided to turn Perry Mason into an ongoing series. Three years later, the sophomore run is here with a new case,...

Perry Mason Season 2 Review: The Gritty Reboot Has Its Day In Court
Image
Created in the 1930s by Erle Stanley Gardner, Perry Mason has traversed the world of books, film, radio, and TV, only to arrive in the peak TV era in 2020. That adaptation, created by Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald, kept the character rooted in the past while also giving him a gritty new outlook. It's likely that if modern audiences remember "Perry Mason" at all, they remember him as the star of stagey courtroom TV dramas; a lawyer who always manages to get the truth out of those he's cross-examining on the stand. But the new Perry Mason, as played by Matthew Rhys, began his first season as a gumshoe; a rumpled private eye caught up in the seedy underbelly of early 1930s Los Angeles. It was only at the end of the show's first season that Mason became a lawyer, rather quickly (he passed the bar after an all-night cram-study...

‘Perry Mason’ Finds Its Mojo in Season 2 by Getting Down and Dirty
Image
“Despite all your brooding cynicism, you still believe in justice!”

This is Hamilton Burger, personal friend and professional nemesis to the title character of Perry Mason, in the legal drama’s long-delayed second season premiere. The first season occasionally used Burger (played by Justin Kirk) as a mouthpiece for all the ways this take on the character wouldn’t resemble either the Erle Stanley Gardner novels or the black-and-white TV series with Raymond Burr. At one point, for instance, he warned Perry (Matthew Rhys) that “No one confesses on the stand,...

Perry Mason Season 2: Everything We Know so Far
Image
After a three-year hiatus, HBO's Perry Mason finally returns for its second season. This series is the latest work about famous criminal defense lawyer Perry Mason, a character who was first created by author Erle Stanley Gardner. Whereas other tales about Perry Mason start with the character as an idealistic lawyer, this adaptation is a gritty origin story set in Depression-era Los Angeles and follows Mason, played by Emmy-winning actor Matthew Rhys (The Americans), as a morally grey private investigator who eventually becomes a lawyer in a last-ditch effort to salvage a case he's working on. Even though it was originally conceived as a limited series, HBO announced in 2020 that Perry Mason would indeed be renewed for a second season. We've created a handy, easy-to-read guide that answers all the questions you may have about Perry Mason Season 2, including when it's being released, who's in it, and what it's about.

Perry Mason Season 2 Trailer Brings Back Matthew Rhys' Hero Lawyer
Image
Matthew Rhys is back in the first trailer for HBO’s Perry Mason season 2. Erle Stanley Gardner’s Perry Mason novels formed the basis for the legendary television series starring Raymond Burr as the (almost) unbeatable defense lawyer. In 2020, Perry Mason got a very gritty period-set reboot, starring The Americans’ Rhys as Gardner’s complicated-but-heroic attorney. Then in July 2020, HBO announced that Perry Mason would be back to tackle another case in season 2.

It’s unfortunately taking quite awhile for Perry Mason season 2 to be delivered after that 2020 announcement. But now the second season is indeed officially on the way, with a premiere date set for March 6, 2023. And fans can finally catch their first glimpse of what’s in store for Perry Mason season 2, thanks to a new trailer just released by HBO. See the clip in the space below:

Perry Mason Season 2 Trailer: Matthew Rhys' Angsty, Brooding Lawyer Is Back For Another Angsty, Brooding Case
Image
When you watch enough movies and shows, you start to pick up on certain little recurring trends. Chief among them has to be the instinct to create new adaptations of classic, pulpy characters ... but with a dark, brooding, and adult-only sheen layered on top. After all, how else would you know to put the "prestige" in prestige television?

Well, as eye-rolling and clichéd as this tendency may be, I'm here to admit that I'm a complete and total hypocrite, because I happily ate that up and asked for more when HBO gave the same exact treatment to the classic character of Perry Mason. Initially a 1957 legal drama on CBS, with the eponymous private investigator played by Raymond Burr and based on the books and short stories written by author Erle Stanley Gardner, creators Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald saw fit to make a new "Perry Mason" adaptation -- this time,...
