In the early morning of Nov. 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in their off campus home. Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were all members of the school’s Greek life and beloved by their campus community, which turned the weeks after their murders into a frenzy of national media attention and online speculation surrounding one topic: The Idaho Murders.
Despite releasing little information about the investigative process, police in Moscow, Idaho eventually arrested primary suspect Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old criminology graduate student at Washington State University.

Good American Family ended its run with a sizable audience on Disney+ and Hulu.
The finale drove 6.3M globally in its first six days of streaming, making it the biggest finale of the year across the two streamers, per Disney.
In fact, Disney also says its the third most-viewed finale ever for a Hulu Original, though the company didn’t give details on the top two finales for comparison.
Good American Family, which dramatizes the headline-capturing adoption of Natalia Grace, did appear to be generating quite a bit of buzz for Disney, consistently ranking in the top five on the Hulu Top 15 Today list every day since launch. That success carried over into social platforms as well, where the series scored the most TikTok engagements, shares, and new followers of all scripted Hulu Originals in 2025.

The finale of “Good American Family,” the Hulu limited series based on the adoption of Natalia Grace, reached 6.3 million views in its first six days of streaming.
That makes the episode Hulu’s third-most-watched finale of all time, as well as the biggest finale of 2025 thus far across both Hulu and Disney+, according to Disney. These comparisons are based on data gathered across all season finales, not first seasons or final seasons alone, with views being calculated by dividing total time streamed by an episode’s runtime.
“Good American Family” stars Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid as the Barnett family. Per the logline, the series follows “a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. [This story contains spoilers from the Good American Family season finale.]
Now that Good American Family has released its final episode, viewers have seen the full intent of the Hulu’s narrative project about Natalia Grace.
The eight-episode limited series, which is inspired by Grace’s viral real-life story, was first told from the perspectives of Kristine and Michael Barnett, the Indiana husband-and-wife who adopted Ukrainian-born Grace in 2010, and who are played by Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass. Halfway through, the series flipped to being told from the point of view of Grace, played by Imogen Faith Reid, and later introduced Grace’s next adoptive parent Cynthia Mans, played by Christina Hendricks.
The differing perspectives, which proved to be contradictory, had been promised by creator Katie Robbins. “We start the story in Kristine and Michael Barnett’s version of events and that slowly starts to shift over time, and we’re led to question if our...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Too Hurty Without It,” Episode 5 of “Good American Family,” now streaming on Hulu.
Living in England, “Good American Family” actress Imogen Faith Reid had never heard of Natalia Grace. “There was one story,” she says, about scouring the British media before her audition. It wasn’t until she got the part that Reid discovered Natalia’s story and all that had happened.
The Hulu series is a dramatization of the real-life events of Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass), the couple who adopted Natalia, a Ukrainian orphan with a rare and severe form of dwarfism. Each episode unfolds in flashback form, exploring what happened after the adoption. After exploring the Barnetts’ perspective, and recounting the events that led to them eventually being accused of neglect, in this week’s “Good American Family,” the series shifts to Natalia’s point of view.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Episode 5 of Hulu’s Good American Family.
The latest episode of Hulu’s Good American Family challenges audiences own biases by flipping the script on the dominating narrative in the Natalia Grace case over the past decade.
After four episodes of seeing Natalia through the eyes of Kristine and Michael Barnett, Episode 5 begins to show us what life was like from Natalia’s perspective during the years where she was abandoned by her adoptive parents and forced to live on her own as a child.
“I think that there’s a lot to say about her experience and what it reflects back on society. I think that what happened to Natalia would not have happened had she not had dwarfism, had she not had a disability, and had people not made assumptions based on growth patterns in people of average stature,” creator Katie Robbins...

Note: This story contains spoilers for “Good American Family” Episode 5.
“Good American Family” put the spotlight on Kristine and Michael Barnett for the first half of its run on Hulu. With Episode 5, viewers get a painful look into their adoptive daughter Natalia Grace’s perspective.
Titled “Too Hurty Without It,” the episode picks up with Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Read) after Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael (Mark Duplass) dropped her off at the apartment they rented for her after legally changing her age to 22. But rather than staying on the point of view of the parents, the show stays with Natalia — an 8-year-old girl with dwarfism left to her own devices.
The harrowing installment follows Natalia struggling to keep up with her cleanliness — including washing her hair with dish soap in the sink because she can’t work the faucet for the shower — and relying on perishables, all the while...

Lost Girls was a searing drama based on the true story of one mother's fight for justice. The Gone Girls documentary series expands on that story with the benefit of all that's been revealed in the past five years—and it's been a lot.
Let me be upfront here, fam. Neither of these shows is going to top your list of feel-good entertainment. The movie Lost Girls and the three-part series Gone Girls are so intertwined that I had to review both. For one thing, they cover the same story, although the newly released documentary goes into much more detail than the movie.
Liz Garbus directed both the movie and the series, so she brings a very special sensibility to the documentary. The 2020 film was her first narrative work, but it's so artfully crafted that you'd never know it. She had directed dozens of documentaries before this, including Love, Marilyn,...

Netflix continues to produce true crime content as fast as viewers can digest it. It seems like a month doesn’t go by without a new docuseries chronicling a devastating turn of events. Speaking of, a true crime program called Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer debuted on the platform on March 31, 2025, and it’s already the most-watched show on the streamer.
Some of the buzz around this new series comes from the fact that the case is still playing out in real time. The show profiles the suspected victims of New York architect and alleged serial killer Rex Heuermann. Police arrested Heuermann in 2023 on multiple murder charges. The defendant pled not guilty. The case has yet to go to trial. However, pre-trial hearings are currently underway.
Liz Garbus directed the series, with Robert Kolker taking the sole writing credit. The program is based on his book, Lost Girls.

Netflix has a knack for pulling us into gripping true-crime stories, and their latest dive into the dark world of unsolved mysteries is no exception. ‘Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer,’ a three-part docuseries that hit the platform, takes us to the eerie shores of Long Island, New York. Directed by Liz Garbus, this series isn’t just about chasing a killer—it’s about the victims, their families, and a justice system that took too long to act. If you’ve been hooked on crime tales before, this one’s got a raw edge that’ll keep you watching.
The story kicks off with a missing woman in 2010, a case that unraveled into something much bigger—bodies found along a lonely beach, a community shaken, and a hunt that stretched over decades. Garbus, who’s no stranger to this tale after directing the 2020 film ‘Lost Girls,’ brings a fresh angle here.

Liz Garbus remembers exactly where she was the day she learned Mari Gilbert had been killed.
In 2016, the Oscar-nominated documentarian was at a dinner with a few journalist friends when she got the text from author Robert Kolker that Gilbert had been killed by her daughter Sarra during the chaos of Sarra’s psychotic break. Garbus was in the midst of adapting Kolker’s book “Lost Girls” into a film, and had met Gilbert once a year earlier. The force-of-nature mother and activist left quite the impression — and was at the center of the story Garbus would be telling about a prolific serial killer on Long Island, New York who had not yet been caught.

You read that right, dear viewer. Netflix is adding no less than 38 movies and shows to their rotation this week. And if you think I'm giving a detailed synopsis of every new arrival, well... in the immortal words of Ms. Kimberly Wilkins, "Ain't nobody got time for that."
Holy Hannah. After last week, I'm used to a lighter workload. Granted, most of these properties aren't new, just new to Netflix. There are certainly a lot of classic films in the group, so I'll hit the highlights. Or at least a dozen of them. Maybe even a baker's dozen, lucky you.
Netflix closes out March with three original titles, then bombards us with 27 features on April Fool's Day. Unless they're doing some weird meta-promotion, and not releasing anything on April 1st. Speaking of April Fool's - I've included one fake title in the list. Hopefully, you'll be able to discover it without too much trouble.

Updated: Hamdan Ballal and his fellow “No Other Land” filmmakers are expressing gratitude to top members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for signing a letter urging Academy leadership to take a stronger stance in condemning an attack on Ballal by Israeli settlers.
The Academy released a statement Wednesday condemning “harming artists” but did not name the individuals involved. By Thursday morning, a letter began circulating among AMPAS members criticizing the Academy’s leadership for failing to publicly support Ballal.
As of Monday afternoon, nearly 900 Academy members — including actor Mark Ruffalo, director Ava DuVernay and Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón — had signed the letter denouncing the Academy’s silence following Ballal’s reported detainment by Israeli authorities. Most recent signatories include J.J. Abrams, Guillermo del Toro, Ben Affleck, Jane Fonda and more.

As of Monday afternoon, nearly 900 Academy members — including actor Mark Ruffalo, director Ava DuVernay and Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón — had signed the letter denouncing the Academy’s silence following Ballal’s reported detainment by Israeli authorities. Most recent signatories include J.J. Abrams, Guillermo del Toro, Ben Affleck, Jane Fonda and more.
Ballal and his fellow “No Other Land” directors shared the following letter with all the signatories:

When 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert called 911 on May 1, 2010, she was absolutely frantic. An escort, Gilbert was on Oak Beach, Long Island for a date with a first-time client named Joseph Brewer when she became distressed, eventually screaming in the call to authorities, “they’re trying to kill me.” When she was last seen, she had run from Brewer and her driver Michael Pak, before knocking on several neighbors’ doors for help and running off into the dark.
Gilbert was a sex worker. She was a diagnosed bipolar who was reportedly not taking her medication.

“No Other Land” co-director Yuval Abraham is detailing what he claims is the lack of support from the Academy for fellow Oscar winner Hamdan Ballal after he was attacked by settlers while in the West Bank and then taken by Israeli soldiers.
Abraham and Ballal co-directed “No Other Land,” which showed the systematic territorial dispossession of a Palestinian community in the West Bank. The film won Best Documentary Feature at the 2025 Oscars. Palestinian director Ballal was beaten by Israeli settlers at his Susiya home on March 24 and was later detained by authorities. The Israel Defense Forces and Israel Police have denied being involved in any beating. Israeli authorities said that Ballal was detained along with several others on suspicion of throwing stones, damaging property and compromising the security of the area. Ballal was later freed and received hospital treatment on March 25.

No Other Land co-director Yuval Abraham has claimed that the “US Academy, which awarded us an Oscar three weeks ago, declined to publicly support Hamdan Ballal while he was beaten and tortured by Israeli soldiers and settlers”.
Israeli filmmaker Abraham, who has been active on X in recent days documenting the attack on his co-director Ballal, drew a contrast today between the Academy’s silence and support from The European Academy and “countless other award groups and festivals”. He added: “Several US Academy members—especially in the documentary branch—pushed for a statement, but it was ultimately refused. We were told that because other Palestinians were beaten up in the settler attack, it could be considered unrelated to the film, so they felt no need to respond.”

Plot: Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.

The first two episodes of Hulu's ripped-from-the-headlines limited series Good American Family debuted on the streamer March 19 — and critics are divided.
The "mad and messy saga" is based on the story of Natalia Grace (played by newcomer Imogen Faith Reid), a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism who is adopted by a Midwestern family — only to be abandoned a year later when they start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. Golden Globe nominee Ellen Pompeo (Grey's Anatomy) executive produces and stars as Kristine Barnett, Natalia's adoptive mother, and Emmy winner Mark Duplass (The Morning Show) plays Michael Barnett, Kristine's optimistic husband. The project also features Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Dulé Hill.
Told from multiple perspectives, Good American Family currently has a 40 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a "generally favorable" MetaCritic score of 63 (based on eight reviews). Critics are split...

From a business standpoint, it’s rarely much of a mystery why this ripped-from-the-headlines true-crime miniseries or that one exists. The subjects are already household names. The topics at hand, typically scammers or serial killers, spark seemingly endless fascination. Make it polished enough, and it could go all the way to the Emmys. You can practically hear the studio exec arguing that not making this show would be leaving money and prestige on the table.
If the bottom-line calculus is clear, however, the creative impetus isn’t always. Just as often as not, what results from this impulse to lightly fictionalize a recent news story is an overly straightforward telling of the same facts we’ve been barraged with already. Maybe there’s a version of the Natalia Grace saga that could cast a new light on an already extensively covered case, or simply add enough panache to make it feel worth revisiting again.

Young women who worked in the sex industry were disappearing from New York City and Long Island and their families were desperate for answers. Then in 2010, female remains were found in the Gilgo Beach area of Long Island, leading to a string of additional discoveries at a virtual dumping ground steps away from New York’s busiest beaches. Despite all of this, the case of the “Long Island serial killer” remained unsolved for 13 years — until July 2023, when a major break came after corruption was rooted out within the police responsible for the case. From two-time Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus (Lost Girls) comes the definitive look at the twists and turns in a case that dominated headlines, and is still developing in real time.

Lost Girls director Liz Garbus returns to focus on a corrupt criminal system and crime victims and their families seeking justice in the trailer for Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, which bows on Netflix March 31.
The 2020 Lost Girls movie for Netflix that starred Amy Ryan centered on a mother searching for her missing daughter in Long Island and who makes a horrifying discovery in the woods where the murdered bodies of four girls had been dumped.
Gone Girls, also for Netflix and set to bow March 31, is also based on the famously unsolved Long Island serial murders, and Garbus brings her cameras again to a troubled police investigation that left friends and family of disappeared and forgotten women in the sex industry denied justice.

With Love, Meghan has had a lot of press coverage. But the lifestyle series fronted by Meghan Markle struggled in the ratings, only just sneaking into Netflix’s top ten weekly ratings chart.
The eight-part series reached 12.6M hours viewed in its first week on the streamer. This was number ten behind ratings leader Kate Hudson-led comedy Running Point, which had 61.8M hours viewed across the week.
This was significantly down on the ratings for Harry & Meghan, which premiered in December 2022 and became Netflix’s biggest documentary debut ever. 'Really, Really Saved Me': Christina Ricci Says Hollywood Rescued Her From 'Not Very Nice' Childhood
Acclaimed actor Christina Ricci is now among the many stars immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame following a decorated film and TV career. Not only has acting given the Yellowjackets star success and fame, but she credits the industry for saving her from a tumultuous childhood.
Speaking with Variety about her Walk of Fame induction, which she called a "profoundly meaningful" moment in her decades-long career, Ricci opened up about her love for acting and what it did for her professionally and personally. Ricci admitted that becoming a film star gave her renewed purpose after a "not very nice" childhood with a family she didn't feel safe around. Having landed key roles in Mermaids, Casper and The Addams Family as a young actor, she showed she could handle the spotlight from an early age. However, she had to overcome the toxicity of home life to deliver on-screen.

Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.
Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.
In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

The following contains spoilers for Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 4, "12 Angry Girls and 1 Drunk Travis," now streaming on Paramount+ and debuting Sunday, March 1 on Showtime.
Yellowjackets' present storyline features many of the survivors as adults, navigating seemingly normal life while still emotionally burdened by their wrongdoings in the woods. Shauna Shipman experiences the most change from her younger to adult self. And when she begins to unleash her teenage, feral side in the present day, it's her husband Jeff Sadecki and daughter Callie Sadecki that are affected. Jeff remains supportive of Shauna even in her worst moments, while Shauna's relationship with Callie is a bumpier road.
In the Yellowjackets Season 3 premiere, Callie spills pig guts on her high school classmates -- an incident resembling the same rage teenage Shauna had. It's possible that Shauna has unknowingly created a miniature version of herself in Callie, while Jeff is far from the type to...

Yellowjackets has proven that no one is safe with the tragic death of adult Natalie (Juliette Lewis) at the end of Season 2. With Season 3 well underway after an almost two-year wait, fans have had time to process the death of one of the only surviving women from the ordeal in the wilderness 25 years earlier. But in Season 3, Episode 4, entitled “12 Angry Girls and 1 Drunk Travis,” there was another shocking death, and it was one no one saw coming.
This death will likely serve as a catalyst for everything that happens through the remainder of the series in at least one of the timelines. And that will include an investigation into who would have killed this person.

It was a story that shook Hollywood: A scene gone wrong on an independent film killed a rising cinematographer, with a well-known star holding the prop gun that fired the fatal bullet.

Within hours, the catastrophic accident was enveloped by a frenzy of media attention. For months, then years, as lawsuits flew and criminal trials unfolded, the tabloid spectacle around the case overshadowed a private, personal tragedy.
In Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna, Halyna’s friend, director Rachel Mason, goes beyond the public narrative to reveal the untold human story of that terrible day and all that followed — from the vantage point of the people at the center of the tragedy.

Quick Links'Yellowjackets' Season 3 Skips Over a Pivotal Time PeriodAnother Direction a 'Yellowjackets' Bonus Episode Could GoIs the 'Yellowjackets' Bonus Episode Still Happening?
Fans of Yellowjackets might recall that the second season was an odd nine episodes long, one fewer than the first season and the currently airing third season, both of which run 10 episodes. Following the Season 2 finale, fans were promised a bonus episode that would air between Season 2 and 3 to tie things together. Months passed, then more than a year, almost two, and nothing ever came to fruition. Season 3 debuted, and that bonus episode seems to be lost in television purgatory.
There’s still no confirmation that the mysterious bonus episode will ever see the light of day, and with Season 3 now underway, it’s becoming more and more unlikely. However, it was needed. And in one sense, could potentially still happen.

Kim Shaw is set for a heavily recurring role in Good American Family, Hulu’s upcoming eight-episode limited drama series inspired by the story of Natalia Grace, starring and executive produced by Ellen Pompeo.
“Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, Good American Family is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism,” according to the synopsis. “But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.

Yellowjackets made its long-awaited return to Paramount+ with Showtime last week, and Season 3 is already smashing records set by its predecessor. Debuting in 2021, the series tells the tale of a New Jersey high school girls' soccer team that crashed in the Canadian wilderness in 1996, and how – for better or worse – that event helped shape their adult lives 25 years later.
Per Variety, the Season 3 premiere of Yellowjackets amassed over 2 million views across Paramount+ and Showtime last weekend, which is a big increase over the Season 2 premiere back in 2023. According to Paramount Global, the first episode, "It Girl," achieved the series' highest streaming viewership ever, boasting an impressive 58% increase over Season 2's "Friends, Romans, Countrymen."
There are many factors in play as to what went into the huge viewership increase for Yellowjackets Season 3, including the fact that when Season 2 debuted, Showtime was on its own back then before being absorbed into Paramount...
