Why ‘Somebody Somewhere’ Star Bridget Everett Insisted Miley Cyrus’ ‘The Climb’ Be Sam’s Defining Anthem: It’s the Song ‘That Matters Most’
Image
In Season 1 of HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” the spotlight had to find Sam (Bridget Everett), a wayward 40-something, looking for direction in her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas.

In the slice-of-life dramedy’s very first episode, Sam is reluctantly pulled on stage by her best friend Joel (Jeff Hiller) to perform karaoke and ends up astonishing the crowd as she belts Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush’s “Don’t Give Up.” She doesn’t like the vulnerability, but there’s no denying music is her form of expression.

So, it’s a full-circle moment in the series finale when Sam seizes the microphone to perform for her chosen family (with Joel again on the piano). “For me, she has grown about a thousand miles from where she was in Season 1,” Everett tells Variety. “For a viewer, it probably just seems minute, but our whole mission for Sam was to have her keep pushing herself.

John Cusack Originally Blasted Ska Music in ‘Say Anything’ Boombox Scene
Image
John Cusack brought troubling stalker behavior, er, teen rom-com courtship to new heights in 1989’s Say Anything, standing outside the family home of valedictorian Diane Court with a boombox raised above his head. As everyone remembers, Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” was the song that Lloyd Dobler chose to wake the neighbors. But that scene could have sounded much different if Cusack had his way.

That’s because “In Your Eyes” wasn’t the first song director Cameron Crowe tried in the iconic scene. “No, not at all,” he told Dan Patrick in 2017. “In fact, that was a scene that was not working at all.”

What was the problem? Blame it on Cusack’s love of the ska-punk band Fishbone. Crowe was also a fan, which accounted for the original song blasting out of Lloyd’s boombox: “Bonin’ in the Boneyard.” Give a listen and dig the amorous vibes...

Denzel Washington & Robert Pattinson To Star In Their First Movie Together, And It’s A Bank Heist Thriller
Image
Robert Pattinson and Denzel Washington are now set to star in their first movie together. Pattinson got his start in young adult franchise movies, first playing Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and then taking the role of Edward Cullen in the massively popular Twilight franchise. After the conclusion of Twilight, he has starred in other blockbusters like 2022's The Batman, but he has also worked in smaller projects with a number of notable directors and co-stars including The Lighthouse (opposite Willem Dafoe), The King (opposite Timothée Chalamet), and High Life (opposite Juliette Binoche).

His newest co-star would certainly count among those notable names. There have been a great number of both critically and commercially successful Denzel Washington movies. In addition to blockbusters such as the Equalizer trilogy, Unstoppable, Safe House, and American Gangster helping push his filmography's cumulative worldwide box office haul past $4.9 billion, the...

This fall, Patti Smith joints the list when she’ll be playing all of Horses to mark its 50th anniversary. Studios are making money off of fake AI trailers on YouTube
Image
Last Updated on March 31, 2025

Years and years ago there was a trend where famous movies were being given fan-made trailers where they were put into an entirely different genre. Remember the one for The Shining that saw the Torrances as a happy family, moving about the Overlook Hotel while Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill” played? Well, those innocent days are long gone because now YouTube is infested with fake trailers that make use of AI, tricking many into thinking it’s a legit promos from the studio.

These AI trailers that have been hitting YouTube for the past couple of years have really picked up steam over the past few months, especially hitting on major upcoming releases. Some of the bigger titles, like James Gunn’s upcoming Superman, get hundreds of thousands of views, sometimes more than the real trailers. Sadly, not all of the top comments are informing others...

Portishead Co-Founder Geoff Barrow Launches Invada Films; Company Wraps John Minton’s Debut Feature ‘Game’ Starring Marc Bessant & Jason Williamson
Image
Exclusive: Portishead co-founder Geoff Barrow has just wrapped his first feature film dubbed Game, which he co-wrote and produced via Invada Films, the newly launched arm of his Bristol-based Invada Records. Here we’ve got an exclusive first-look image from the film.

The thriller, which stars Marc Bessant and Jason Williamson and is the directorial debut of filmmaker John Minton, is set against the backdrop of the 1990s rave culture where two men – one a thief and one a poacher – must use their wits to survive.

It’s an idea that originated through a conversation between Barrow and Bessant, who then brought Minton and Rob Williams aboard to help with writing the story. Williams wrote the final screenplay.

The project was shot in and around Bristol in the UK and is now in post-production.

“John Minton and I have worked together for over 20 years on music projects and have always...

Resynator Review: Rediscovering the Past Through Music and Memory
Image
Alison Tavel’s documentary Resynator explores a synthesizer’s history while uncovering a deeper personal narrative. The film examines Don Tavel’s creation, a synthesizer that briefly attracted attention from musicians like Peter Gabriel but never achieved widespread recognition.

The machine becomes a conduit for Alison’s exploration of her father’s life, revealing hidden stories and emotional landscapes.

Resynator tells a deeply personal story, connecting technology with intimate human experiences. Through her search for the synthesizer’s fragments, Alison discovers layers of her father’s life—complex, contradictory, and profoundly affecting her own understanding of family and memory.

The documentary weaves between present-day investigations and past revelations, creating a nuanced portrait that transcends the technical origins of a musical instrument.

A Daughter’s Search for Sound and Silence

Alison Tavel’s documentary explores her father Don Tavel’s life through the lens of his forgotten musical invention, the Resynator.

Phil Collins Explains Why Illness Means He Has No Wish To Make Any More Music
Image
UK chart-topper Phil Collins has seemingly pulled down the curtain on his long career, saying he has no wish to make any further music.

The former Genesis frontman and solo superstar, now 74, told Mojo magazine:

“I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore.”

Collins toured for a final time with his former band Genesis in 2022, but his frail physical health meant he performed from a chair on stage. He told Mojo:

“The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick.”

Collins previously revealed that he suffers from type 2 diabetes and complications from a spin injury, also that he could no longer hold his drum sticks properly without feeling pain, even taping his sticks to his hands to get through later gigs.

As a solo entertainer, he has won eight Grammy Awards, four Billboard Music Awards,...

Image
In a new interview, Phil Collins reveals that health issues have not only prevented him from performing live but have also sapped his desire to make new music.

Speaking to Mojo, Collins said, “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick…”

It’s unclear whether Collins is suffering from new ailments in addition to the deteriorating back condition that has limited both his mobility and...

Phil Collins Unable to Make New Music: “I’ve Been Very Sick”
Image
In a rare interview, Phil Collins said he has considered recording new music, but is unable to do so because he’s been “very sick.”

The iconic Genesis member and solo singer-drummer offered the health update to Mojo as part of the UK magazine’s new cover story on Genesis coinciding with the release of a new Lamb Lies Down On Broadway box set.

Collins, whom Consequence named one of the 100 Best Drummers of All Time, explained that both his health and his waning desire have prevented him from creating new music. “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens,” remarked the rock legend. “But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick…”

While he didn’t specify his current health condition, Collins suffered nerve damage stemming from a 2007 spinal injury. During Genesis’ farewell...

London’s Mercato Metropolitano Launches Studio After Serving Up ‘Unknown Chefs’ Series Produced by Andrea Iervolino, David Tickle
Image
London’s Mercato Metropolitano food market is opening a studio for TV and movie productions – while still functioning as a sustainable food court – after servicing the shoot of upcoming doc series “The Unknown Chefs” produced by Italy’s Andrea Iervolino and British music producer David Tickle.

The “Unknown Chefs” series chronicling the journey of four cooks who sought refuge in the United Kingdom –- respectively from Syria, Namibia, Nepal, and Uzbekistan –- and then managed to turn the food of their homeland into their livelihoods, will drop March 7 on streamers including Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Iervolino’s Tatatu platform.

Iervolino produced the show with Tickle via his Tickle Entertainment shingle. Tickle is known for his work with artists including Blondie, Peter Gabriel, U2, Prince and Joe Cocker.

The show’s protagonists were able to launch their own street food businesses with the support of Mercato Metropolitano.

Iervolino, whose credits include Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,...

Who Sang The Big Bang Theory Theme Song & Where Are They Now?
Image
The theme song for "The Big Bang Theory" is a fast-talking deluge of pseudo-nerdy references that are juuust incorrect enough to drive real-life nerds a little big crazy. The full version of the theme, rarely played in its entirety before the show, included enough brainy references to be clever, however. It talks about bipeds evolving, the continent of Pangaea, and it contains the lyric "Australopithecus would really have been sick of us," which I deeply appreciate.

The theme song was written and performed by Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies, the authors of the famously wordy 1998 hit "One Week." Gen-Xers can likely recite large portions of "One Week", although only committed Barenaked Ladies fans have memorized the entire thing. The band also had charting hits with "It's All Been Done" (also from 1998) as well as "Pinch Me" and "Too Little Too Late." Those paying attention to indie rock in 1992 likely heard...

In addition to Morph, Aardman Animations created the Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, and Shaun the Sheep franchises.

Between the late 1980s and mid-1990s, Aardman Animations emerged as one of the world's most respected animation studios thanks to their award-winning short films. All 10 Aardman Animated Films, Ranked
Image
In an age where CGI animation reigns supreme, traditional 2D animation is all but dead in movie theaters, and we’re regularly subjected to photorealistic monstrosities from mega-corporations like Disney, a new film from Aardman Animations feels like an oasis in a desert. While they’ve of course dabbled with some CGI films, the Bristol-based studio has otherwise stayed committed to a style of filmmaking that feels handmade: quite literally. On the models of the Plasticine-based characters that populate an Aardman film, you can sometimes spot the fingerprints of the directors who painstakingly move them around to create the thrilling action and laugh-out loud comedy. With cinema increasingly becoming in danger of going AI-generated, it’s comforting to see a movie that’s so unambiguously made by humans.

Although they made their feature film debut in 2000 with the beloved “Chicken Run,” Aardman Animations goes all the way back to 1972, when...

Colin Farrell Doesn't Like One Of His Most Popular Crime Thrillers
Image
Michael Mann's big-screen iteration of his hit 1980s television series "Miami Vice" was up against it from the moment it was greenlit. The problem was right there in the title, and what it represented. When people who were old enough to have watched "Miami Vice" during its run from 1984 to 1990 recalled the show, they remembered a series that was Reagan-era style over substance. It was cool during a profoundly uncool era, a byproduct of empty MTV gloss bolstered by ultra-unhip music from Glenn Frey and Phil Collins. Star Don Johnson -- unshaven in a white sportcoat, rocking white Cole Haan kicks without socks -- was the epitome of the series.

The shimmering South Florida surfaces was one reason to watch, but anyone who paid actual attention to the plotlines knew going into Mann's film that the show was always about a rough, thankless, inherently deceitful job and the...

Which Bollywood Movie Did Daniel Craig Audition For?

You read that right—Daniel Craig, now a household name as James Bond, once auditioned for a role in Rang De Basanti that you wouldn’t expect him to touch. In a twist that even the most hardcore Bond fans might not know, Craig tried out for the part of James McKinley, the British jailor who walks the freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev to their execution in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s iconic film.

But things didn’t pan out—because he was also being considered to take on the role of the next 007 at the time. In his autobiography, The Stranger in the Mirror, Mehra recounts how he wanted to create a piece of world cinema, aiming for perfection behind the scenes with a team that included David Reid and Adam Bowling. These two had worked on classics like Lock,...

Peter Gabriel Boards Indigenous Reconciliation Doc ‘New Blood’ as Executive Producer (Exclusive)

Peter Gabriel has boarded the documentary New Blood — about the historical trauma and current challenges faced by Canada’s indigenous people — as an executive producer.

The British rock icon first allowed music from New Blood, his ninth studio album, to be used in an original live high school dance show inspired by the true story of Siksika First Nation chief Vincent Yellow Old Woman. “When we approached Peter Gabriel about the documentary, he graciously granted us permission to use his entire New Blood album in kind, citing his great respect for indigenous people,” New Blood producer Austin Ladouceur explained in a statement. “The album includes some of his greatest hits with an accompanying orchestral instrumental, and we’re thrilled...

‘Somebody Somewhere’ Review: Season 3 Offers a Ray of Light Among TV’s Dark Days
Image
Singing is an act of faith. Whether you’re alone in the shower or mic’d up on stage, every time you turn your voice into an instrument, you’re asking for trust — trust that others will want to hear it, trust that you’ll remember all the words, notes, and rhythms, and, perhaps most importantly, trust that you’ll be happy with whatever comes out.

Faith isn’t easy to come by for Sam (Bridget Everett). When we first met the Kansas native in the first season of HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” she’s working a dismal office job. She’s just lost her sister, Holly, after a year of caring for her in their Manhattan, Ks hometown. Sam’s parents are on the decline, and the rest of her family isn’t exactly a fount of inspiration. Even friends are hard to come by. To say Sam’s...

VMAs biggest winners of all time: Taylor Swift, BTS and Beyonce among top MTV Video Music Awards champs ever
Image
MTV doesn’t air as many music videos as they used to, but the MTV Video Music Awards are still one of the most anticipated music events of each year. However, while the Grammys are voted on by the industry insiders who make up the Recording Academy, the VMAs have been decided by fans since 2006 (except for below-the-line professional categories like Best Direction and Best Cinematography). So who are the biggest winners of all time at these awards? Scroll down to see the most honored artists in history.

The VMA Moon Person trophies themselves are often overshadowed by the show’s drama and spectacle. Much of that spectacle comes from performances, like legendary provocateur Madonna performing “Like a Virgin” dressed as a bride in a bustier at the very first ceremony in 1984. She also famously sang “Vogue” dressed as Marie Antoinette in 1990, and she kissed Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears...

Eminem Calls Back to Platinum-Blond Slim Shady Era With “Houdini” VMAs Performance
Image
Eminem’s latest album may be called The Death of Slim Shady, but for his first TV performances from the album, the rapper brought back his platinum-haired alter ego, along with a horde of look-alikes.

In an opening reminiscent of his 2000 VMAs performance of “Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am,” in which Eminem was accompanied by 100 look-alikes, the rapper kicked off the 2024 VMAs and his “Houdini” performance by entering the Long Island, New York, Ubs Arena sporting a platinum-blond wig, joined by many men with the same hair.

Before going inside the arena, the 2024 MTV VMAs showed a Bat-Signal-like “E” in the sky. When Eminem and his doppelgängers reached the stage, he wove among them as he continued to perform.

Taylor Swift sets new record for most VMA wins in history: Here’s all 29 victories of her career
Image
Taylor Swift collects records by the armful, from concert ticket sales to album sales to awards hauls. She made history again in 2024 at the MTV Video Music Awards where she won five times, bringing her total to 28. That surpassed Beyonce‘s record of 27 wins to make Swift the most honored artist in the history of the VMAs. Scroll down for the list of her every victory at the awards.

Swift wasn’t always the juggernaut she is now. In fact, she lost her very first nomination at the VMAs: Best New Artist in 2008 for “Teardrops on My Guitar,” back when she was recording music as strictly a country artist. And her first triumph at the awards, Best Female Video in 2009 for “You Belong with Me,” was infamously marred by the interruption of Kanye West who insisted that Beyonce deserved the award instead.

But Swift got many more chances to make speeches uninterrupted.

Eminem Kicks Off 2024 VMAs With Early 2000s Callbacks and ‘The Death of Slim Shady’ Medley
Image
Eminem kicked off the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards with a performance of “Houdini” and his Jelly Roll collaboration “Somebody Save Me” off his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce).

The performance opened with a short skit in which a mass of Slim Shady clones stormed New York’s Ubs Arena under the leadership of Eminem as he rapped the opening lyrics of “Without Me” from 2002’s The Eminem Show. In a choppy blonde wig of his own, Eminem used the opening as a reference to his entrance at the 2000 MTV VMAs,...

The Scrubs Revival Can Finally Pay Off A Jd Tease From 15 Years Ago
Image
Scrubs' coming revival has the chance to bring one of Jd's final fantasies to life, meaning a 15-year-old scene could finally be realized when the sitcom comes back. The showrunner has already promised he's "Definitely going to" bring back Scrubs, and has been very vocal on the subject for a few years. With the failure of Scrubs season 9 leading to its cancelation in 2010, the show's comeback has some redeeming to do, and a big part of that could be addressing a key moment from the penultimate run's finale.

The Scrubs revival hasn't yet been officially greenlit, but showrunner Bill Lawrence remains resolute in his intention to bring the medical sitcom back to TV screens. When he finally follows through on his plan, the show will have been off the air for at least 15 years. While this leaves a lot of ground to cover regarding what all the characters have been up to during this time,...

Image
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards have the potential to be one of the most star-studded ceremonies the show has seen in years, with huge names like Eminem, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish all up for awards. There could also be a few iconic moments when it comes to the winners. More than a couple of artists could break records and make history on the VMA stage.

SEEKaty Perry will receive Video Vanguard Award at 2024 VMAs

Most VMA wins ever

Right now the record for the most Video Music Awards trophies belongs to Beyoncé with a whopping 27 Moonpersons. However, that might change this year. Taylor Swift scooped up 10 nominations for this edition of the awards. She is already in second place behind Beyoncé with 23 wins, so if Swift manages to win five awards this year, she’ll become the most awarded person in VMA history — like she already is...

Image
Legendary bassist Tony Levin, best known for his work with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, has announced the new album Bringing It Down to the Bass. The LP features contributions from Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Vinnie Colaiuta, and more.

The album arrives via Flatiron Recordings on September 13th, one day after Levin kicks off the highly anticipated “Beat” tour celebrating the music of King Crimson with Adrian Belew, Danny Carey, and Steve Vai. According to Levin, the album is a long-time coming, as he’s been working on a number of the songs for years, if not decades.

Eddie Rosenblatt, president of Geffen Records during its days as one of the hottest record labels in the music business, died Tuesday at a hospital in Santa Barbara of pneumonia at 89.

From there, he moved on to Main Line Distribution, then joined A&m Records in 1967 and then Warner Bros. Records in 1971, where he helped run the company’s distribution arm, Wea.

Rosenblatt’s work at Warner Bros. included working with Joni Mitchell, who was managed by David Geffen, and led Geffen to hire him as president of his newly founded namesake label in 1980.
