On a night filled with laughter, heartfelt tributes, and electrifying performances, the 2025 BET Awards proved that honoring Black excellence transcends the trophies themselves.
Dubbed "Culture’s Biggest Night," the event offered a dazzling celebration of creativity and achievement. Rather than focusing on the presentation of awards, the nearly five-hour telecast prioritized entertainment, featuring a packed lineup of powerhouse performances, comedy, and emotional tributes. Highlighting the evening were special honors for the BET Ultimate Icon Award recipients: Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Kirk Franklin, and Snoop Dogg. Their remarkable contributions to music, film, and culture took center stage in a show dedicated to legacy and artistry.
Host Kevin Hart kicked off the ceremony with a 10-minute monologue, poking fun at podcasts, stage names, and Kanye West. "He says he's out front and he's waiting for someone to invite him in," the comedian joked before warning the audience, "Don't do it! We all saw the movie Sinners.

The 2024 edition of the Kennedy Center Honors celebrated an eclectic assortment of entertainers Sunday night: filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, singer Bonnie Raitt, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and surviving members of the Grateful Dead. The organization also bestowed its honor on an entertainment venue for the first time, New York’s iconic Apollo Theater.
As per tradition, the honorees observed the proceedings from the presidential box in the Kennedy Center Opera House, accompanied by President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and First Husband Doug Emhoff. Freshly arrived from a White House reception, all received rousing ovations from an appreciative audience when introduced.
That White House tradition could go on hiatus during the incoming Trump administration, since Donald Trump notably declined to participate in the affair during his first presidency. Nonetheless, invitations will be extended by the rigidly nonpartisan arts institution, the Kencen assures.
Slated to air on CBS Dec.

If you missed Friday’s episode of “The View,” then you missed Ana Navarro asking Joy Behar, almost point blank, if she has ever cheated on her husband.
The hosts were talking about the new Martha Stewart documentary on Netflix, in which the pop culture icon up and admits to cheating on her ex-husband Andrew Stewart for decades. It was a revelation Behar was surprised to learn after the fact.
“I say she got away with it because men are so clueless and egotistical they think no one would ever cheat on me,” she said. “So a woman can keep it a secret better than a man. That’s my opinion.”
Navarro took that line and threw subtlety out the window. “Is it your opinion or your experience?” she asked with a smile.
The comment earned laughs and gasps from the crowd before the other hosts went around the horn...

Works from Perry Como to The Cars were added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry, which designates recordings worthy of preservation “based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.”
Among the 25 selected this year are Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” Blondie’s “Parallel Lines,” The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Ready to Die,” Green Day’s “Dookie” and The Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces.” Also on the list are Lily Tomlin’s comedy recordings, and much older titles like Gene Autry’s “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are” and Como’s “Catch a Falling Star” / “Magic Moments.” The Cars’ debut album is on the list as well as Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Some of the titles added date to 1919, with the entry of the all-Black 369th U.S. Infantry Band led by James Reese Europe.

SXSW 2024 kicked off its first full day of music on March 12 with a smattering of must-see shows around town, plus some tension in the air thanks to the festival’s relationship with the U.S. Army. (When Texas Gov. Greg Abbott chimed in on social media, it was the kind of noise that no one needs.) While a number of acts cancelled their official showcases, many of them continued to play unofficial shows for the audiences that SXSW brought to town, and several spoke out in support of the Palestinian people and against war.

From humble beginnings in Hollis, Queens, to the world stage of Live Aid, it has been more than 40 years since Run-dmc first changed hip-hop forever. Now Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons, Darryl “Dmc” McDaniels, and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell are having their story told through a new three-part documentary series Kings From Queens: The Run Dmc Story. It premieres February 1 on Peacock. Titans of music across genres including Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Questlove, Beastie Boys, Ice-t, Chuck D, Tom Morello, Salt, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Mc Lyte, and Ed Love speak about how the group inspired generations. And how they impacted the cultural landscape of the business with their unique and catchy sound. Some of the biggest triumphs such as taking hip-hop mainstream thanks to “Walk This Way” with Aerosmith are chronicled. With those proud touchtones also comes immense tragedy. Ok, let's be honest - did we really expect the MTV VMAs, of all award shows, to deliver the best hip-hop 50 tribute of the year? The "all-star finale performance" MTV touted ahead of the Sept. 12 event included Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Dmc (of Run-d.M.C.), Doug E. Fresh, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five as performers. The 10-minute tribute intended to honor the culture's entire 50-year history, but with a lineup that shallow (and New York-skewed), is that even possible?
The VMAs aren't alone: it seems every award show's hip-hop 50 tribute has missed the mark this year. The Grammys kicked off the milestone celebration in February with an old school-meets-new-school performance, which featured everyone from Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul to Lil Baby, GloRilla, and Lil Uzi Vert. The BET Awards followed suit in June with a "non-stop party" of medley performances from folks like Warren G,...

At last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift announced her Midnights album. And this year, the album helped her dominate the night with multiple wins, including her fourth for video of the year.
Swift is the only artist to win the top prize four times — this year it was for her No. 1 hit “Anti-Hero.” During the win that closed out the four-hour show Tuesday night, she shared the stage with those who worked on the music video: director of photography Rina Yang and editor Chancler Haynes.
Swift opened and closed the show with honors: She fangirled, like most of the audience, when she accepted the first award of the night from ‘N Sync, who earned a standing ovation from the crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
“I am not doing well pivoting from this to this. I had your dolls. Are you doing something? What’s going to happen now?...
