Anonymous Academy Member: Adrien Brody’s the Brutalist Was the “Clear Pick” Only Because a 2024 Masterpiece About America’s Racist Past Didn’t Get Nominated
Image
Hollywood’s biggest night isn’t just about shiny trophies and emotional speeches; it’s also packed with drama behind the scenes. And this year, an anonymous Academy voter just dropped some wild insider tea.

Adrien Brody in The Pianist | Credits: Universal Pictures

Apparently, Adrien Brody’s The Brutalist wasn’t the best pick — it was just the only pick. Why? Because a way better 2024 film tackling America’s racist past didn’t even get a nomination.

Did Nickel Boys’ snub hand The Brutalist the Best Picture crown? Herisse as Elwood Curtis in Nickel Boys | Credits: Amazon MGM Studios

Adrien Brody’s The Brutalist was the clear pick for Best Picture — yeah, but only because Nickel Boys didn’t make the cut.

That’s the word from an anonymous Academy member, and honestly? They might have a point. RaMell Ross’ powerful adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel landed a Best...

With unique visual language, greatly subdued performances, and a devastating conclusion, ‘Nickel Boys’ positions itself as deserving of its received awards nominations, if not deserving of more than it has or will be given. The Sls Hotel in Beverly Hills was filled with pride and tears of joy on Monday night as the American Black Film Festival recognized five actors for their contributions to cinema at the 2025 ABFF Honors.

Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie commenced the awards presentation portion of the ceremony — hosted by comedian Zainab Johnson — by recalling words of wisdom his Marvel film co-star Giancarlo Esposito — known for early roles in Spike Lee’s School Daze and Do the Right Thing and most recently Breaking Bad, Kaleidoscope and The Gentlemen — imparted to him when he was an aspiring actor.

“He said, ‘Look here, man. You want to be a working actor, you have to work to work on your craft,’” Mackie shared. “’Sometimes that means you won’t get paid. The value is in working on your craft.’”

Esposito, who received the Excellence in the Arts Award, echoed a...

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor Thanks Keke Palmer for ‘Making Me Famous,’ Aaron Pierre Breaks Out Viral ‘Mufasa’ Dance Moves and More Inside ABFF Honors
Image
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor enjoyed a surprise early birthday celebration at the 2025 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Honors ceremony on Monday night — complete with a cake, sparkling candles and the well-heeled crowd singing her “Happy Birthday”.

Ellis-Taylor was among the special honorees at the awards show, feted not just for turning another year older, but for delivering another year full of dazzling performances, including in the best picture Oscar-nominated film “Nickel Boys.” Though the spotlight was on Elllis-Taylor, she seemed less interested in accepting her well-deserved flowers than in doling them out to her fellow honorees.

“Keke Palmer made me famous,” Ellis-Taylor declared as she took the stage at the Sls Hotel in Beverly Hills to accept ABFF’s Excellence in the Arts trophy from her “Origin” director Ava DuVernay.

A dozen years ago, Ellis-Taylor and Palmer — who was honored with the Renaissance Award for her varied career accomplishments thus far — co-starred...

‘Nickel Boys’ Director/Co-Writer RaMell Ross & Stars On “Experimental Monument” Of Oscar-Nominated Civil Rights-Era Drama & Power Of Trust
Image
“I think about the film as a place to do, as I like to say, make an experiential monument,” says Nickel Boys director/co-writer RaMell Ross of the Oscar-nominated the Florida-set Jim Crow-era drama adapted from Colson Whitehead’s 2020 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.

“To elevate your schoolboy story to a place of historical reckoning for an audience where you guys have an experience that’s like, as visceral as you smelling something, smelling the air after a storm, or you rolling in the grass or feeling the sun on your skin,” the filmmaker asserted. “Where it’s something you try to explain to someone and they’re like, dude, you were just rolling in the grass and you’re like, but you don’t understand.”

With acclaimed actors Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson onstage with him and Deadline Executive Editor Dominic Patten moderating, Ross was speaking on...

Joel Kim Booster Hopes To Bring Levity To WGA Awards’ West Coast Ceremony After Years Of Strife For Writers
Image
Exclusive: Joel Kim Booster just wants to make people laugh — and if anyone could use a moment of levity right now, its film and TV writers.

The comedian is set to host the 77th WGA Awards’ West Coast ceremony Saturday (joined by Roy Wood Jr. on the East Coast), because, in his own words, “I am a classically trained gay guy, so I love award shows.”

That, and he’s hoping to provide a bit of reprieve from the tough few years that many in Hollywood have faced, from production shutdowns to dual strikes to the devastating wildfires that kicked off the year. Most importantly, he’s looking forward to the opportunity to celebrate his own union membership.

“I think that we saw sort of the strength of our union throughout the strike we went through a couple years ago,” he tells Deadline, adding that he thinks a strong labor...

Brandon Wilson and Ethan Herisse in Nickel Boys (2024)
Nickel Boys (2024) Movie Review: A Sensory Tale about Endurance Where the Chosen Perspective Makes the Biggest Difference
Brandon Wilson and Ethan Herisse in Nickel Boys (2024)
There is so much to unpack in RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys” (2024) that it is hard to do justice with words. It is poetic and poignant as it blends historical fiction with a coming-of-age tale and a bruising prison drama. Although it revolves around two teenagers, it emerges as a collective portrait of an entire generation that struggled through the Jim Crow era. The film primarily follows Elwood (Ethan Herisse), a 17-year-old bright student, who seeks a higher education and hopes for a secure future. His doting grandmother motivates him in the same direction until one day when he finds himself in trouble.

While on his way to class, Elwood gets offered a car ride. He naively accepts the offer only to realize something shocking about it. Soon, he gets sentenced to Nickel Academy, a ruthless reformatory in Southern America. His dreams get shattered as he finds himself being forced to...

Brandon Wilson and Ethan Herisse in Nickel Boys (2024)
Where to Watch & Stream ‘Nickel Boys’ Online?: Streaming Release Date Revealed
Brandon Wilson and Ethan Herisse in Nickel Boys (2024)
Amazon MGM’s powerful drama Nickel Boys, based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is set to make its digital debut. The Oscar-nominated film, which had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival before a limited theatrical release in December 2024, has garnered critical acclaim for its harrowing portrayal of injustice. Here’s everything you need to know about when and where you can stream Nickel Boys online.

What is Nickel Boys About?

Nickel Boys is inspired by the true story of the infamous Dozier School for Boys, a reform school in Florida known for its brutal treatment of students. The film follows Elwood Curtis (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), two African-American boys navigating the horrors of the Nickel Academy in the 1960s. As Elwood clings to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachings, Turner adopts a more cynical approach to survival—forcing both to make impossible choices in a deeply unjust system.

Image
The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards took place on Friday, February 7, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Three films—Wicked, Emilia Pérez, and The Substance—each won three awards. However, none of them claimed the top honor of Best Picture, which went to Anora. Interestingly, Anora didn’t win in any other category that night.

Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, won Best Director, making him only the third filmmaker to win the award for a musical. The others were Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge! and Damien Chazelle for La La Land. Chazelle later won an Oscar for directing La La Land, but Luhrmann and Chu didn’t even receive Oscar nominations for their films. Wicked also took home awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.

Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Song for “El Mal”, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.

‘Anora’ Wins Best Picture at 2025 Critics Choice Awards, While ‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘The Substance,’ and ‘Wicked’ Take Most Prizes: Full Winners List
Image
After two separate delays due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the 2025 Critics Choice Awards have all finally been handed out. The winners list provides another indicator of the strength of several films leading into the Academy Awards March 2, though TV plays a big role in the Critics Choice Awards as well — even if many of the top contenders on that side of the event, such as “Shogun,” which led the TV awards with four wins, are not eligible for this September’s Emmys having already stormed last year’s Emmys.

“Anora” won Best Picture out of a field of 10 nominees. It was the only Critics Choice Award the Sean Baker film starring Mikey Madison won full stop. The most film wins went to “Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “The Substance” with three each.

“Wicked” won Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and, in a shock, Best Director for Jon M. Chu,...

Zoe Saldaña Hails ‘Emilia Pérez’ as the ‘Little Movie That Could’ in Critics’ Choice Speech: ‘I Hope We Can All Be Curious and Open-Hearted’
Image
Zoe Saldaña continued to cement her Oscar frontrunner status by winning best supporting actress honors at the 2025 Critics’ Choice Awards for her performance in Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez.” She stars in the musical crime drama as Rita Mora Castro, an exasperated lawyer who agrees to help a drug lord undergo gender reassignment surgery.

“My husband went to the bathroom!” Saldaña began before pulling out a written speech and thanking the Critics’ Choice Association and her fellow nominees. “I appreciate the role of a critic. I do. I sometimes read the reviews and internalize it, especially the helpful feedback like, ‘Her crying is distracting.’ ‘She’s in too many franchises.’ Or, my personal favorite, she’s too blue,” getting some laughs for her nod to the “Avatar” franchise.

“To think that ‘Emilia Pérez’ is the little movie that could and has resonated with so many people has been an experience worth having,...

‘Wicked,’ ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Substance’ Lead Critics Choice Awards, but ‘Anora’ Nabs Best Picture: Full Winners List
Image
“Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “The Substance” each triumphed with three wins at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards on Friday night. However, it was “Anora” that claimed the best picture prize at this year’s ceremony.

The Neon release entered the race with seven nominations, including best actress for Mikey Madison and best director and original screenplay for Sean Baker. But ultimately, “Anora” walked away with the coveted best picture award, and nothing more.

Meanwhile, “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu, who wasn’t nominated in the Academy Awards’ best director category, beat out several Oscar nominees to win the best director honor at the Critics Choice Awards. “I’m going to win that Oscar!” Chu said jokingly on stage.

The film-acting categories had less surprises, as the ceremony handed best actress to Demi Moore (“The Substance”), best actor to Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), best supporting actress to Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia...

‘The Brutalist,’ ‘Emilia Pérez,’ and ‘Wicked’ top Critics Choice Awards film odds
Image
The Brutalist is poised to win big at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards on Friday. According to the official Gold Derby odds, which are based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby experts, editors, and users, the epic drama about a Holocaust survivor’s struggles in America will claim Best Picture, Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Actor (Adrien Brody), and Best Cinematography.

The Critics Choice Awards are decided by the Critics Choice Association, which comprises more than 580 broadcast, radio, and online critics and entertainment journalists. The voting body has little overlap with the Motion Picture Academy that decides the Oscars, which may be why they’ve disagreed with the Best Picture Oscar winner half the time in recent years. The two organizations have matched five times in the past decade: both groups picked Spotlight (2015), The Shape of Water (2017), Nomadland (2020), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), and Oppenheimer (2023).

After The Brutalist,...
