‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Overtakes J.J. Abrams’ Sci-Fi Reboot at the Domestic Box Office
Image
Having entered the final stretch of its largely successful theatrical run, Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remake is aiming to surpass the $650 million milestone at the global box office before it taps out for good. Domestically, the hit film has already passed what will likely be its final milestone, $250 million. Produced on a reported budget of $150 million, which is on the lower end of the spectrum for a movie of its size, How to Train Your Dragon has been an unambiguously profitable venture for DreamWorks; the studio intends to follow in Pixar's footsteps and produce remakes of its greatest animated hits.

With $258 million at the domestic box office so far, How to Train Your Dragon has now overtaken the $257 million lifetime haul of director J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, and the late Anton Yelchin, Star Trek...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Flies Past Will Smith’s $585 Million Sci-Fi Hit at the Domestic Box Office
Image
After its seventh weekend in theaters, and following its release on PVOD on July 15, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake is showing no signs of slowing down. Across the most recent weekend, and despite the release of new tough competition in the Pedro Pascal-led The Fantastic Four: First Steps, How to Train Your Dragon once again finished inside the domestic top 10, finishing seventh with a respectable $2.8 million in the US alone.

Because of this, the movie has now hit its latest, and possibly last, box office milestone, surpassing the $600 million mark worldwide. Split between a domestic haul of $257 million and a further $348 million from overseas markets, this makes How to Train Your Dragon the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year globally, as well as moving it up even higher in the all-time domestic rankings. In doing so, the Dean DeBlois-directed remake has now surpassed a huge 2007 hit in domestic revenue,...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Overtakes the Transformers Bomb that Michael Bay Regrets Making
Image
It has been observed that family films tend to keep performing at the box office even after they’ve been released on the PVOD market. Recently, Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon — both remakes of classic animated films — proved this theory. They’ve grossed over $1.6 billion in combined box office revenue, with Lilo & Stitch having made over $1 billion alone. Now in its seventh week of release, How to Train Your Dragonpassed what will probably be its final major box office milestone, seeing as it’s available on home video, and is losing theaters every week.

With nearly $260 million domestically and another $349 million from overseas markets, How to Train Your Dragon’s cumulative global haul now stands at $605 million. This weekend, the blockbuster film overtook the lifetime global haul of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and Daniel Craig’s first two films as James Bond: Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

Lilo & Stitch 2 Gets An Exciting Writing Update After The Disney Remake's $1B Box Office Milestone
Image
The in-development Lilo & Stitch 2 gets a major writing update as its predecessor continues to soar at the box office. 2025's Lilo & Stitch, a live-action reimagining of Disney's beloved 2002 animated movie, has been a runaway success since it debuted over Memorial Day weekend. To date, the film is the only Hollywood movie of the year to earn $1 billion globally.

As a result, Disney has officially greenlit Lilo & Stitch 2, with the announcement coming just over a month after its predecessor's release. No release date has been set, and the cast remains unconfirmed, but the main ensemble is expected to return.

Now, the sequel has taken a big step forward. Per Deadline, original Lilo & Stitch writer Chris Sanders has come on board to write the live-action sequel. Sanders served as co-director and co-writer on the 2002 movie alongside Dean DeBlois.

For the live-action Lilo & Stitch, Sanders returned to voice Stitch,...

Chris Sanders to Write Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch 2’
Image
Chris Sanders is sticking with “Lilo & Stitch.”

The filmmaker, who wrote and directed the original animated feature (with partner Dean DeBlois) for Disney and who has voiced the character through dozens of projects, including this year’s $1 billion-grossing live-action adaptation, will return to write the live-action sequel.

Sanders’ most recent feature was 2023’s Oscar-nominated “The Wild Robot,” which he made for DreamWorks Animation. He is currently developing the sequel.

Disney’s updated “Lilo & Stitch” was the first western movie this year to make $1 billion at the global box office. The remake was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and starred Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, Zach Galifianakis and original voice actors Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee, who came back as new characters. The movie was warmly reviewed, with a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Before “Lilo & Stitch” crossed the $1 billion mark, Disney had already announced a sequel.

Lilo & Stitch 2 Gets a Major Update (& Fans Will Be Excited)
Image
After the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake became a major box office hit, Disney greenlit a sequel. Now, we know who will be writing the follow-up to the $1 billion hit.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Sanders, who co-created the Lilo & Stitch franchise with Dean DeBlois, has been tapped to write the screenplay for the live-action Lilo & Stitch 2, which was first announced on Stitch Day (June 26). After only voicing Stitch in the live-action remake, Sander will be way more involved in the sequel and will be directly responsible for the direction the story takes. At this time, his deal only calls for him to write the screenplay and not direct, although things could possibly change on that front. Dean Fleischer Camp directed the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, which was written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Chris Van Waes.

‘Lilo & Stitch 2’ Brings Back Co-Creator Chris Sanders to Write Script (Exclusive)
Image
Hold on to your coconuts, because one of Stitch’s parents is coming home.

Chris Sanders, the Wild Robot filmmaker who co-created, co-wrote and co-directed the 2002 animated Lilo & Stitch, is in final negotiations to return to the fold and pen the sequel to Disney’s live-action megahit.

The deal calls for Sanders, who voiced the character in both versions of the title, to only write the screenplay and not direct at this stage. Sanders is also focused on developing the sequel to Robot for DreamWorks Animation.

Last week, the live-action Stitch became the first Hollywood movie of 2025 to cross the billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office. The Hollywood Reporter reported the movie has exceeded expectations since opening over Memorial Day, thanks to families and Gen Zers who grew up on the original title.

Now in theaters over 60 days domestically, Stitch opened May 23 to a record-breaking $183 million over the four-day holiday,...

'How to Train Your Dragon' Soars Past Will Smith's Beloved Sci-Fi Movie as It Nears Major Box Office Milestone
Image
In the least surprising movie news of the weekend, James Gunn's Superman topped the box office charts for the second week running, turning in a huge $58 million in the US alone and earning more than the rest of the top 5 again. However, it wasn't the only movie to come out of the weekend with its head held high, with the Gareth Edwards-helmed Jurassic World Rebirth, Joseph Kosinski's F1, starring Brad Pitt, and Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remake all proving popular once again.

The latter of this trio, helmed by Dean DeBlois, returned a strong $5.4 million on its sixth weekend and finished in sixth place in the domestic weekend rankings. Because of this, How to Train Your Dragon has now hit a global total of $589 million, split between $250.7 million domestically and a further $338 million from overseas markets. ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Overtakes Tom Hardy’s Critically-Panned Blockbuster at International Box Office
Image
Despite having been made available to watch at home, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake continued pulling crowds to theaters even in its sixth weekend of release. The film is inching closer to the $600 million milestone, and will find itself in a tight race with How to Train Your Dragon 2 to become the franchise’s top-grossing installment. This weekend, it crossed the $250 million mark domestically, and approached the $350 million milestone at the international box office. And, in doing so, it overtook a handful of past blockbusters.

The film’s $338 million overseas haul puts it ahead of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, Travis Knight’s Bumblebee, the original Men in Black film directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and also last year’s Venom: The Last Dance. Starring Tom Hardy and directed by the debutante Kelly Marcel, The Last Dance served as the final film of the anti-hero trilogy, which began...

How To Watch The How To Train Your Dragon Remake At Home
Image
DreamWorks and Universal's live-action remake of "How to Train Your Dragon" is currently one of the year's biggest summer blockbusters. The movie, of course, retells the story of a young Viking named Hiccup (Mason Thames) and his unlikely friend, the injured dragon Toothless, as was previously told in DreamWorks' 2010 animated film of the same name. And just like in that movie, the two bridge the divide between the worlds of humans and dragons in the re-telling, teaching Hiccup's Viking community that dragons like Toothless are their friends, not enemies.

Ever since Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" brought in over $1 billion at the box office, Disney had cornered the market on these "live-action reboots of classic animated films." And while DreamWorks Animation hasn't been around nearly as long as Disney has, those who grew up watching its movies over the last quarter-century are now old enough to have kids of their own.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Beats Six Beloved Animated Blockbusters in One Weekend at the Global Box Office
Image
Having completed a full month of release in theaters worldwide, Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remake has firmly established itself as a hit. It wasn't a foregone conclusion, especially with a few other live-action remakes underperforming at the box office recently. One of them, Snow White, was an outright bomb, having grossed just over $200 million against a reported budget of over $250 million. Not only did How to Train Your Dragon cost less than that film, it has also generated over twice as much as it did globally. This weekend, it overtook as many as six beloved animated hits.

With $240 million domestically and $320 million from overseas markets, How to Train Your Dragon's cumulative global haul currently stands at $560 million. It reportedly cost $150 million to produce, which is relatively low for a tent pole of this magnitude. We must remember that the movie was always supposed to spawn sequels and...

The Live-Action How To Train Your Dragon Movie Fixed The One Issue The Director Had
Image
The great thing about being able to retell your own story is that you can fix your previous mistakes. In the case of 2025's "How to Train Your Dragon," director Dean DeBlois was able to revisit his 2010 animated classic in live-action, improving not only characters like Hiccup and Toothless but also certain plot points from the original film that never made sense to begin with.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his second go-around, DeBlois clarified how he could do damage control on a story that had remained untouched for 15 years. One particular example he brought up was a bit of a plot hole in the near-perfect original animated movie, in which the people of Berk deal with the fallout of Toothless bringing down the Red Death. As you may recall, the oversized Alpha swiftly turns the Vikings' ships to kindling after Stoick's (Gerard Butler) attack on the island housing the dragons' nest.

The 2025 version retells the story of a Viking boy who forms an unlikely bond with a dragon, challenging the beliefs of his village. It opened strong worldwide with nearly $198 million and kept its momentum into the following weeks.

Dreamworks’ ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Live Action Remake Will Satisfy Both General Audiences and Diehard Fans
Image
An Enjoyable Time At The Theater Despite the original ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ animated feature releasing a little over a decade ago, and its final sequel coming out in 2019, there was nothing more logical for Dreamworks to do than to create a live action remake of the first entry in the series. A $150 million one. The budget really doesn’t matter when you have a dedicated fan base of Millennials and GenZers, an original trilogy that grossed over $1.6 billion, and general audiences that seem to fall in line and go to the theater when a beloved animated film is remade into live action, no matter the quality. The ‘Lilo and Stitch’ remake has already grossed over $800 million, so what’s stopping studios from just remaking original, heartfelt animation into standardized live action and making boatloads of money? 'How to Train Your Dragon' Just Broke a New Record for Gerard Butler at the Domestic Box Office
Image
Finishing third in the domestic rankings, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake had another flying weekend at the box office, returning another $11 million and finally surpassing the total earned by the 2010 animated original. Not only that, but the movie has moved further up the all-time ranks, surpassing Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's La La Land, the animated hit Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the beloved Toy Story 2, and more to officially become one of the 250 highest-grossing movies of all time.

Thanks to this continued success, with the film losing out only to Joseph Kosinski's F1 and the debuting Jurassic World Rebirth in the box office rankings last weekend, one of its stars has officially smashed a huge new milestone in his storied Hollywood career. Gerard Butler, who reprises his role as Stoick the Vast in the live-action adaptation, has now seen the record for his highest-grossing...

The Weekend Box Office Numbers Are In and ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Is Leading the Top 10
Image
This past weekend, theaters buzzed with excitement as families, thrill-seekers, and movie lovers packed screenings for the Fourth of July holiday. A mix of heart-pounding action, family adventures, and dramatic stories ruled the charts, showing there’s something for everyone at the cinema right now.

From fresh franchise entries to reimagined classics, these films are pulling in big crowds and bigger bucks. Let’s break down the top 10, starting from the bottom and climbing to the top spot.

10. Ballerina (2025) Thunder Road

‘Ballerina’ (2025), a John Wick spin-off from Lionsgate, grabbed $725,000 in its fifth week, sitting at number 10. Its domestic total is $57.3 million, but a 66.9% drop signals it’s losing steam across 923 theaters.

Ana de Armas shines as a vengeful assassin in this action-packed flick. While it carries the Wick name, it’s struggling against summer heavyweights, making its global $92 million feel modest.

9. Materialists (2025) A24

A24’s romantic drama ‘Materialists’ (2025) earned $1.3 million in its fourth week,...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Overtakes Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s 91% Rotten Tomatoes Modern Classic at the Global Box Office
Image
After successfully staying afloat for an entire month, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake passed a massive global box office milestone this weekend. In doing so, the movie also overtook the animated original from 2010, which concluded its run with $495 million worldwide and inspired two theatrical sequels that did even better. How to Train Your Dragon is DreamWorks Animation’s first-ever live-action remake, after over a decade of Disney’s domination of this sphere. A follow-up movie, based on How to Train Your Dragon 2, has already been set for a 2027 release.

With over $220 million domestically and another $293 million from overseas markets, How to Train Your Dragon’s global box office haul now stands at a strong $517 million. The movie was produced on a reported budget of $150 million, which is relatively lean for this kind of tent pole. For instance, Disney’s Snow White live-action remake from earlier this...

Box Office: ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Bites Off $26 Million Friday, ‘F1’ Races Toward $100 Million
Image
Dinosaurs and racecars are at the top of the box office, so it’s safe to say summer movie season is in full swing.

Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth,” the seventh in the historic franchise, took a T-Rex-sized bite out of the box office with $26 million domestically from 6,105 venues on the Fourth of July. The Friday numbers were bolstered by an already solid performance since its initial release on July 2, earning $55.8 million before the weekend even began. Projections have “Rebirth” earning north of $140 million by Sunday, which would slot it as the seventh-highest domestic earner of 2025. The Universal camp needs the holiday momentum to continue through the coming weeks, considering the film’s production budget hovers around $180 million, not including marketing. Domestic gross over the traditional three-day frame is projected at $85 million.

While “Rebirth” is king of the box office this week, it actually had the lowest opening of any of the “Jurassic World” installments.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Soars Past One of Disney's Biggest Money Makers at Global Box Office
Image
Pixar is having a terrible time currently, with its latest release, Elio, delivering the single-worst opening in its history. To add to the disappointment, rival studio DreamWorks Animation's first live-action remake, How to Train Your Dragon, has overtaken one of its most memorable hits at the global box office. How to Train Your Dragon has been playing in theaters for less than a month, and is expected to pass the coveted half-billion milestone this weekend. It fended off competition from Elio, as well as fellow live-action remake Lilo & Stitch, whose wings it seems to have clipped.

With $466 million at the global box office, How to Train Your Dragon has established itself among the 300 highest-grossing films in history. It has also overtaken the $463 million lifetime global haul of Pixar's 2006 hit Cars, which spawned a couple of sequels, but is perhaps one of the biggest cash cows in film merchandising history.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Flies Over Nicolas Cage’s $130 Million Blockbuster Sequel at Global Box Office
Image
It's always been an interesting time to be Jerry Bruckheimer, but the super-producer's recent run has been quite spectacular. A few years ago, he collaborated with star Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski on Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. More recently, he produced Kosinski's F1, starring Brad Pitt. The movie had an excellent debut last week, and has received massive acclaim from audiences. But a couple of decades ago, in the second phase of his career, Bruckheimer was working quite frequently with Nicolas Cage. Among the most successful of their collaborations is the cult hit National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which was recently overtaken at the worldwide box office by How to Train Your Dragon.

Universal's live-action remake of the 2010 animated hit has generated $459 million globally so far, overtaking National Treasure 2's $457 million lifetime haul. In doing so, How to Train Your Dragon has become one...
