Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.
Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.
In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

Argentinian filmmaker Celina Murga provides thought-provoking portrayals of relationships through her 2020 movie The Freshly Cut Grass. The story focuses on two professors, Natalia and Pablo, who teach at the same university but otherwise have independent lives.
Both find themselves dissatisfied in marriage yet drawn towards forbidden attractions, embarking on strikingly similar yet distinctly experienced journeys as their personal worlds evolve in both aligned and divergent ways.
Natalia, powerfully played by Marina de Tavira, has been married for many years with two daughters yet feels her husband Hernan fails to truly understand her needs. Pablo, rendered fully human by Juan Furriel, also seems disconnected from wife Carla, despite their two sons. When Natalia and Pablo each start intimate connections with younger students in their orbits, their choices throw everything into question yet also offer glimpses of what was missing.
Though following parallel paths of discontent and desire, Murga ensures we see...

The Freshly Cut Grass cast delivers excellent, layered performances showcasing character depth & parallel scenarios. The drama's repetition helps clarify the story, revealing the intricacies of infidelity and gender norms. The slow-burn film captures the mundanity of daily routines and explores deep emotional turmoil without judgment.
The Freshly Cut Grass is a study in observation. The slow-burn Argentinian drama can be arduous, but it isnt without a point to make. And its an incisive point that can only be picked up if youre paying close attention to the details. The characters two agronomics professors, Natalia (Marina de Tavira) and Pablo (Joaqun Furriel), who are having affairs with their students, Gonzalo (Emanuel Parga) and Luciana (Vernica Gerez), respectively mirror each other in many ways. Theyre looking for love in their own misguided ways, but The Freshly Cut Grass has a more profound message that goes beyond its premise.

In “The Freshly Cut Grass,” there’s a scene that captures how people who’ve been married for a while, and are in the thick of raising children, can snipe at each other in dog-whistle ways that mean nothing and everything. Pablo (Joaquín Furriel), a professor at an agronomy college (he basically instructs his students about dirt), says that he thinks his teaching job is “shitty.” But his wife, Carla (Romina Peluffo), has no job at all (and is up for an interview), so she takes his comment as an insult. She snaps at him, then apologizes and lays her head on his shoulder; we think their snit is over. But Pablo doesn’t move a muscle, which leads her to say, “Does it bother you if I touch you?” No, he says, “how could it bother me?” Well, she explains, she wanted a hug. But there’s a power duel in play,...

Argentinian director Celina Murga’s new feature The Freshly Cut Grass (El aroma del pasto recién cortado) probably should have been called The Grass Is Greener, so much is it about adults desperately searching for happiness outside their married lives, only to realize they may have been better off staying home in bed and throwing on Netflix.
Following a pair of 40-something professors who teach at the same university, and who both start affairs with younger students that wind up blowing up in their faces, the film’s rather original structure tells two parallel stories that mirror each other without ever once intersecting. That novelty, as well as strong performances from a cast of six, help boost a movie that says nothing entirely new about adultery, marriage, or midlife crises, resulting in a relatively pedestrian if keenly observed ensemble drama.

Celina Murga’s “The Freshly Cut Grass,” executive produced by Martin Scorsese, is debuting at the Tribeca Festival and Variety has been given exclusive access to its first trailer and poster ahead of its world premiere on June 8.
Penned by Murga, director Juan Villegas (“Las Vegas”) and Lucía Osorio with the collaboration of Gabriela Larralde, the plot centers around two couples who engage in extramarital affairs and how, despite having the same professional position, they are treated differently because of their gender.
An exploration of the sexism and misogyny that permeates relationships both at home and in the workplace, pic offers a timely look at feminism, sexism, and the subtle ways these issues affect both men and women, all through the microcosm of two marriages.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Actor, which appears to be a two-man battle.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve hit Super Bowl weekend — for the nobody who asked: Chiefs moneyline (but I have the 49ers on a longtime bet) — meaning we’re gearing back up for the televised awards to carry us through to Oscar weekend in March. With the BAFTA Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards on the horizon, most of the Phase 2 attention has turned to the lead acting races. We typed about Best Actress last week, which kind of has the shape of last year’s highly competitive race but also not really. Along those same lines, there’s at least some similarity between the 2023 Best Actor battle and this year’s match.

As Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), and Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) have proven in recent years, there is ample precedent for performers to earn Oscar nominations despite snubs at the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards. Indeed, 18 such instances have occurred since 2002, the first year that all four precursor prizes were preceded by official nominations.
Over the last 22 years, each of the four acting Oscar categories has produced at least three out-of-the-blue bids. However, none of the performers who overcame their four earlier snubs managed to clinch the gold and instead had to settle for being Oscar finalists.
It’s worth noting that Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids, albeit in 2001 when there were no Critics Choice nominations. The four precursor trophies were evenly distributed among her Oscar competitors: Judi Dench, Kate Hudson,...

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards gave us our first true surprises of this year’s awards season. Since it is the first major kudos with five-nominee slots in each category, there was a number of snubs in the acting categories, one of whom was Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” in a sea of exclusions that included Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), and the trio of actors from “May December”: Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.
But fear not, they all still have hope yet for receiving recognition from the academy, particularly Hüller, who is the only performance from an international film in the bunch. She plays Sandra Voyter in Justine Triet‘s award-winning film, a woman who tries to...

There is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Last year, Andrea Riseborough became the latest Oscar contender to come out of nowhere when she reaped a Best Actress bid for “To Leslie.”
She joined a roster of 23 other performers who heard their names on Oscar nominations morning despite being repeatedly overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar.
(Note: Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids. However, that was in 2001, the year before the Critics Choice introduced nominations. Frances McDormand won with that group for both “Almost Famous” and “Wonder Boys,” Kate Hudson took home the Globe for “Almost Famous” and Judi Dench prevailed at SAG for “Chocolat.

Ever since “The Holdovers” premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, 21-year-old Dominic Sessa has steadily attracted heaps of praise for his debut performance as one of its central characters. Despite earning recognition from some critics groups, he now unfortunately sits as a BAFTA longlist contender with no other key industry precursor bids. However, there is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards.
Below, we list the 24 performers who pulled off Oscar nominations surprises after being overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar. Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) is the latest addition to this list for her Best Actress bid last year.

Everyone thought that Best Supporting Actress was locked up and secured, with Lily Gladstone from “Killers of the Flower Moon” the overwhelming favorite. Then came the bombshell: Gladstone had been switched from supporting to lead. This threw Oscarologists into a state of hysteria as many claimed it was a foolish move — she was a shoo-in to win Best Supporting Actress, why change? — while others argued that her screen time in Martin Scorsese‘s epic justified the move.
The one thing we can all agree on, however, is that it has blown the Best Supporting Actress race wide open, which could leave room for a surprise nomination or two. Enter Rosamund Pike. Pike stars in Emerald Fennell‘s latest flick, “Saltburn,” which follows Barry Keoghan as Oliver Quick, an Oxford student who becomes obsessed with his rich classmate, Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). Oliver goes and stays with Felix’s family at their manor house,...

Martin Scorsese is executive producing Argentine filmmaker Celina Murga’s latest drama, “The Freshly Cut Grass,” which has begun production.
Produced by “Argentina, 1985” producers Infinity Hill, the film stars Oscar nominee Marina de Tavira (“Roma”) who plays opposite Argentina’s Joaquin Furriel in what is described as “an exploration of love, desire, relationships and how society applies double standards for men and women.”
“I came to know Celina [Murga] through Rolex’s arts mentorship program, in which I’d agreed to participate for the 2008-2009 year,” said Scorsese. “I chose Celina among the candidates that were sent my way because I was greatly impressed by her two features ‘Ana and the Others’ and ‘A Week Alone,’” he added.
“I try to see as many pictures from around the world as I can, and I found both films unusual in subject matter, extremely subtle on a dramatic level, closely tied to...

Now & Then is a brand new series to come out of Apple TV, launching this weekend. The series, which is set in two simultaneous periods of time, focusing on the past & present day, it’s a show that blends romance, drama, action and thrills – all with a great big dollop of nostalgia. It also showcases the talented pool of Latin America performers and creative talents working in the industry today – and to mark the show’s release, we had the pleasure in speaking to the majority of them.

In recent years, Oscar voters have shown a clear preference for longer supporting male performances while choosing to award shorter ones on the female side. Since Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis took these prizes in 2017, all featured male winners have clocked in at at least 38 minutes, and every corresponding female champ’s screen time has fallen under 27 minutes. Just over 20 minutes separated 2021 victors Daniel Kaluuya and Youn Yuh-jung.
While all of the four most recent Best Supporting Actor winners are considered by some to be leads, the supporting placements of Youn and her three predecessors have never been called into question. Laura Dern triumphed one year before her with 18 minutes and 36 seconds of screen time in “Marriage Story” and was preceded by Regina King and Allison Janney. The stark difference between Davis and Janney’s screen times and the continued favor shown toward shorter supporting female performances seems to have...

In the push for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts to use juries to open up their nominations slots to a more diverse slate of talent (often homegrown), many BAFTA 2022 nominees are irrelevant to the Oscar race. Here’s what we can glean from these often bizarre (Joanna Scanlan took a slot that could have gone to Nicole Kidman!) choices.
First of all, Oscar nominations voting is closed, so whatever (minimal) impact this has on the race, it’s on the final phase of Oscar campaigning, which begins after Oscar nominations are announced February 8. The BAFTA awards will be held March 13 in London; Oscar voting closes March 22. Most Academy voters don’t watch the BAFTAs on the BBC and BBC America, but they see who wins and winning momentum always matters.
Who comes out ahead? The main takeaway, which could have been predicted in advance, is that craft-friendly...

In 1940, “Gone with the Wind” made Oscars history by conquering eight competitive categories, thereby smashing the record for most wins for a single film previously held by “It Happened One Night”. It was an achievement that stood for two decades until “Ben-Hur” raised the bar to its current height of 11 in 1960. By taking home an award for her work, featured cast member Hattie McDaniel established herself as the first Best Supporting Actress champ from a Best Picture-winning film. This particular dual triumph has since been repeated by 12 more films, from “Mrs. Miniver” to “12 Years a Slave”.
A whopping 511 films have vied for Best Picture since the supporting categories were introduced in 1937, and 172 (34%) of them have had at least one featured female performance recognized as well. A significant number of women in this group were viewed as surprise nominees who made it in on the coattails of their respective films,...

The Best Supporting Actress awards were first handed out at the 9th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1937, and in the nearly 85 years since, 83 women have received this honor. Only two have won multiple Oscars in this category: Dianne Wiest and Shelley Winters. The great character actress Thelma Ritter holds the record number of nominations in this category with six, sadly without a win, while Amy Adams has had five bids in supporting (one in lead), also without a win.
This is a category that often sees first nominations, many times recognizing ingenues who go on to earn multiples nominations throughout their careers. The youngest acting winner of all time was a Best Supporting Actress recipient: 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal won for “Paper Moon” in 1974. However, veteran actresses are also considered, with some receiving their sole nomination in their golden years. In fact, seven of the 10 oldest nominees in this category each received her sole nomination,...

Closing out the New York Film Festival, Pedro Almodóvar’s newest venture, “Parallel Mothers,” debuted with an endearing and scintillating turn from Penélope Cruz and newcomer Milena Smit, both of whom will be angling for much-deserved awards attention. But can it go any further than that?
Fresh off winning the prestigious Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival, it’s easy to see why Cruz was a jury favorite. While it’s not the best work of her career, Cruz makes all of her acting interpretations and choices look effortless. The ability to drop tears, invoke an undeniable sex appeal, and command the camera lens is not something many actresses of her caliber can do. Her Oscar journey began in the hands of the Spanish auteur. She received her first nom for “Volver” (2006), though the film wasn’t nominated in the foreign-language category. This catapulted her into an awards magnet:...

Disney/20th Century Studios' Free Guy was able to stay on top at the box office for the second consecutive weekend. The movie, which stars Ryan Reynolds, fell 34% from last weekend, earning $18.7 million. Globally, Free Guy has earned $77.2 million in its ten days in theaters. The second win for the movie proves that many people are still willing to head back into movie theaters, though the numbers prove that the pandemic is still having a strong effect on the business.
As it stands, the box office is still far away from a traditional return to normalcy. In addition to the pandemic, the Northeast is taking a pounding from Hurricane Henri, which is keeping people from getting out of their homes. This weekend's top earning theaters across North America include Montreal, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Sacramento, Nashville, San Antonio, Toronto, New York, Cleveland, Harrisburg Pennsylvania, Odessa Texas, Quebec, Pittsburgh, Dallas, and Edmonton.

Chicago – “Reminiscence” is a futuristic noir with precious little on its mind. Instead of ideas, this sci-fi thriller offers half remembered cop movie cliches and hard boiled detective narration that’s just barely a step above Harrison Ford’s in the original cut of “Blade Runner.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Hugh Jackman is Nick, a former cop and former soldier in the not too distant future. He is now a private detective making a living off memories. He searches through people’s memories courtesy of an isolation tank full of water that allows the subject to relive the memories all over again, and presents them in a hologram so Jackman and his overworked assistant Watts (Thandiwe Newton) can pour over clues.
“Reminiscence” is in theaters and HBO Max on August 20th. Featuring Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Daniel Wu and Marina de Tavira. Written and directed by Lisa Joy. Rated “PG-13”

“Westworld” co-creator Lisa Joy has shown her flair for incorporating science-fiction with large-scale worldbuilding and her feature directorial debut, “Reminiscence,” seems no different. The film, set to debut in theaters and on HBO Max August 20, stars Hugh Jackman as Nick Bannister, a P.I. who uses an already-outdated technology to help customers eager to retreat back into their interior desires. But when his life is upended by a beautiful new client who is hiding quite a bit (a big ask in a world in which anyone can peek inside your brain), Joy sends Nick on a time-bending adventure that’s just as beholden to sci-fi ideas as it is to classic romantic tropes.
Though Joy has become a prominent creative in the industry, she’s been vocal about the challenges she’s faced as a woman. In a new interview for The Independent, she discusses starting her career when she was pregnant,...

Don't count on that Wolverine cameo in Deadpool 3. For nearly two decades, Hugh Jackman famously starred as the X-Men fan favorite in a series of Marvel movies, some of which put Logan in the lead. Jackman said goodbye to the role following Logan in 2017, but given the establishment of the multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the possibility is always there for Jackman's Wolverine to pop up again at some point, even if just for a cameo appearance.
For better or for worse, it doesn't look like this is going to end up happening. In a new interview with Jake's Takes on YouTube, Hugh Jackman speaks candidly about his thoughts on portraying Wolverine for 17 years. When directly asked by host Jake Hamilton if there's any possible way Logan might return under the "multiverse umbrella" with Jackman back in the role someday in the future, Jackman offered this candid response.

Some interesting posts from Hugh Jackman on Instagram has some fans wondering if the actor is teasing a return to the role of Wolverine. The last time we saw Jackman in the iconic role of the fan favorite X-Men superhero was in 2017's Logan, a movie that served to conclude the character's story after nearly two decades. There has been no indication that he'll ever reprise the role, and that seems especially so with the X-Men set to be rebooted for the MCU.
Jackman's return to the role of Wolverine might seem unlikely, but it's not impossible. The introduction of a live-action multiverse in the MCU, which we'll see elements of in both Spider-Man: Far From Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, means that any character from alternate Marvel movie universes can potentially appear at any time. In other words, the door is wide open for Logan...

That’s what star Hugh Jackman does, cast here as a Nick Bannister, a P.I. who uses an already-outdated technology to help customers eager to retreat back into their interior desires. But...
