Learned about her Oscar nomination while getting her son ready for the school. She expected Roma (2018) to be nominated but was in complete shock when she got nominated for her performance in the film.

She is the daughter of María Lucila Isabel Servitje Montull and criminal lawyer Juan Pablo de Tavira Noriega. Her father was murdered in mysterious circumstances with the killer never being identified.

The character she plays in Roma (2018) is modeled after the mother of director Alfonso Cuarón.

She studied at the La Conchita theatre school in Coyoacán as well as the Theatre Studies Centre and the San Cayetano Theatre Formation Centre , graduating with a performance in a stage adaptation of "Feliz nuevo siglo doktor Freud," and then performed with groups such as the National Theatre Company and the Línea de Sombra theatre. She's also an acting teacher at the Casa de Teatro and a founding member of the Incidente Teatro productions.

In 2019, she was invited to join the actor's branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Her maternal grandfather, Lorenzo Servitje (Lorenzo Servitje Sendra), was an accountant, businessperson, and philanthropist, who was one of the founders of bakery company Grupo Bimbo, the world's largest. Lorenzo and Marina's grandmother, Carmen Montull Valles, were the children of Spanish immigrants, with Lorenzo's parents being Catalan and Carmen's being from Valencia and Catalonia.

Her Spanish ancestry includes Andalusian, Aragonese, Asturian, Castilian, Catalan, and Valencian. She also has Basque forebears, and a great-great-grandmother who was of Austrian/Hungarian descent.

Her paternal five times great-uncle was Mariano Arista, a general who was the 19th President of Mexico, from 15 January, 1851 to 6 January, 1853.

Was in a relationship with actor Rafael Sánchez Navarro from 2012 to 2019.

Has a son called Tadeo (b. 2009).
