Robert Schwartzman, who found critical success with his recent documentary about the British Invasion band The Zombies, has begun work on another music doc, this one about Las Vegas legend Wayne Newton.
The director revealed that the “Danke Schoen” singer would be his next subject Thursday night during a Q&a session that followed a screening of Hung Up on a Dream: The Zombies Documentary (2023) at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.
Newton, 83, was just a teenager when he began performing in Las Vegas with his older brother, Jerry, and the colorful live performer has logged tens of thousands of performances in the city — and he’s still going strong.
Born in Virginia and raised in Arizona, Newton was generously given “Danke Schoen” to record in the early 1960s by “Mack the Knife” singer Bobby Darin, and the song peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Glee Reunion: Chris Colfer and Darren Criss Bring #Klaine to the Tonys, 10 Years After Series Finale
The 2025 Tony Awards was a big night for a lot of people — but mostly for the cast of Glee.
Where do we even begin? Perhaps with Jonathan Groff (aka Jesse St. James) getting everyone on their feet with a performance from the Bobby Darin musical Just in Time? Or maybe Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) presenting an award while celebrating her own impending return to Broadway in the revival of Chess? Or how about Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson) taking home his first-ever Tony Award for his role in this year’s Best Musical winner Maybe Happy Ending?

Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. Mere hours after the 2025 Tonys, we reconvene to dissect the shocking wins, highlight our favorite victors, and discuss the musical performances.
David Buchanan: After a truly sensational Broadway season, last night's Tony Awards didn't disappoint with some surprises, did it? If folks have been reading our weekly column, they probably did pretty well with their predictions and would've seen some of these upsets coming — I shockingly tied for first place worldwide! — but there were still some wins that were hard to call correctly in the moment but were predictable in hindsight. One of those categories was Best Play. We knew that this would be a squeaker between frontrunner Oh, Mary! and challengers Purpose and John Proctor Is the Villain, but very few Gold Derby users correctly called the win for the Pulitzer victor.

Arthur Hamilton, the Oscar-nominated songwriter best known for his smoky torch-song classic “Cry Me a River,” memorably recorded by Julie London, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Cocker and many others, has died. He was 98.
His death was announced this week by ASCAP and the Society of Composers and Lyricists; details were not immediately available.
Hamilton received his Oscar nom for best song (shared with composer Riz Ortolani) for “Till Love Touches Your Life” from Madron (1970), performed by Richard Williams and Jan Daley for the movie Western that starred Richard Boone and Leslie Caron.
For Warner Bros.’ Pete Kelly’s Blues (1955), starring and directed by Jack Webb, Hamilton created two wistful songs for Peggy Lee, who played an alcoholic jazz singer in the musical crime film — “He Needs Me” and “Sing a Rainbow,” which would evolve into a children’s classic.

Kevin Spacey continues his efforts towards an industry comeback. His latest project? And his new project is certainly a surprising one. Spacey has already helmed a supernatural action thriller under the working name Holiguards. The film marks Spacey's third directorial endeavor, following 1996's Albino Alligator and 2004's biopic of Bobby Darin, Beyond the Sea, with Spacey also set to star in Holiguards alongside 80s icon Dolph Lundgren.
Lundgren gained recognition for his portrayal of boxer Ivan Drago in 1985's Rocky IV. That breakthrough role was the beginning of a prolific action career, which later included roles in Masters of the Universe (where he played He-Man), Red Scorpion, and 1989's The Punisher. In recent years, Lundgren has continued to be active in Hollywood, with notable projects including The Expendables franchise, Creed II (reprising his role as Ivan Drago), and the Aquaman films.

“They have completely different personalities, like you're talking to different people,” says Derek McLane of the musicals Death Becomes Her and Just in Time. The scenic designer is a two-time Tony Award winner, but this year he achieved a feat that left him “stunned.” He was nominated twice in the same category, with his work on both productions being recognized in the Scenic Design of a Musical race.
Speaking to Gold Derby, McLane reveals that the key to any design process is listening to the elements that make each production unique. “They have such totally different personalities, such different engines,” he says of the two nominated projects. “The thing I love about set design is that I feel like if I do it successfully, each set design develops its own rules. Once that happens, there's no mistaking them. They become their own Frankensteins where they just start making their own decisions for you.

This June, Jonathan Groff will have the rare chance to win Tony Awards in two consecutive years. If he repeats last year’s triumph for Merrily We Roll Along with one for this year’s Just In Time, he’ll join a very exclusive club of six Broadway greats: Laurie Metcalf, Judith Light, Stephen Spinella, Sandy Dennis, Gwen Verdon, and Shirley Booth.
For Groff, the two-in-a-row possibility, exciting enough, even has a hint more frisson: Just In Time, a biographical musical of Bobby Darin, marks a career first for the busy actor. “I’ve never been part of a project from its conception. Eight years ago this month, actually, Ted Chapin asked me to do a night of Bobby Darin music at the 92nd Street Y and I read this book called Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee, written by Dodd Darin, the son of Bobby and Sandy,...

“It’s my first love,” Jonathan Groff tells The Hollywood Reporter, on why he returned to Broadway so soon after winning his first Tony Award for Merrily We Roll Along last year.
Now, Groff has received his fourth Tony nomination for playing singer-actor Bobby Darin in the jukebox musical, Just in Time. He has previously been nominated for his work in Hamilton and Spring Awakening. But this time, the experience is “unlike anything” before, as he’s been involved with the project for the last eight years and has learned how to embody the moves and persona of the legendary singer.
And the Mindhunter star is having a lot of fun doing it. At the top of the show, he introduces himself to the crowd as himself, which was Groff’s idea, and even warns the crowd that he might spit on them while singing, poking fun at his saliva-based...

Kelly Clarkson recalled getting covered in Broadway star Jonathan Groff’s spit and sweat while watching him perform years ago in the musical “Spring Awakening.”
“I was in the second row, and I was like,” Clarkson told Groff, who appeared as a guest on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” Wednesday as she acted out being hit with Groff’s bodily fluids.
“It’s called— there’s a term, and it’s called the ‘Groff sauce,'” Clarkson said.
“Woahhh, woahhh” Groff responded in shock.
“And it wasn’t just your spit, it was your sweat,” Clarkson continued. “And then I felt like an inferior performer, cause I was like, ‘I have never worked that hard.’ Like, I have never, ever worked that hard. You’re, you’re like, speaking of cells, you’re whole body is into it. You, you are a spitter.”

Video: Just In Time Stars Demonstrate Hilarious Close Contact Singing on Late Night With Seth Meyers
Following the 6 Tony nominations for Just in Time, stars Jonathan Groff and Gracie Lawrence visited Late Night with Seth Meyers to discuss the new hit musical. The musical, playing at the Circle in the Square Theatre, chronicles the life and career of singer Bobby Darin. "It's very intimate," Lawrence said of the space, which has been transformed into a nightclub setting. She recalled a story from a recent performance in which, due to the proximity, an audience member reached out to touch Groff's shoulder. "Jonathan, like the consummate professional, [nodded to her] and went directly into the next line. And I was like, 'You're just going to leave me here with that?' I was laughing. Like, I couldn't even go on." Lawrence...

Well, big weekly grosses and even bigger stars can’t guarantee a Tony Awards nomination.
Broadway does what Broadway wants, so no Best Play nominations (or anything else) for huge moneymaker Othello, and no Best Play noms for Good Night, and Good Luck, Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Same for the critical favorite Cult of Love.
While Good Night and Dorian Gray weren’t nominated for Best Play, their big stars — George Clooney and Sarah Snook, respectively — were nominated for their performances, as expected. In fact, Dorian Gray, in which Snook plays all the characters from the Oscar Wilde novel, has the distinction of being the most nominated solo show in Tony history, placing in six categories: Snook’s performance, Kip Williams’ direction, and nods for scenic, lighting, sound and costume design.

‘Boop! The Musical’ leads 2025 Drama Desk Awards nominations; off-Broadway dominates play categories
Nominations for the 69th annual Drama Desk Awards were announced Wednesday by Tony- and Grammy-nominated actor Norm Lewis. Winners will be announced on June 1, at a ceremony taking place at NYU Skirball and hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess.
The Drama Desk Awards are unique in the landscape of New York theater, as they are the only place where Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway compete within the same categories. The nominating committee of the 2025 Drama Desk Awards comprises Chair Martha Wade Steketee, Linda Armstrong, Daniel Dinero, Peter Filichia, Kenji Fujishima, Raven Snook, and Charles Wright.
The Broadway transfers of Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Outlaw, English, Job, and Oh, Mary! were not eligible for these kudos, having already competed for their off-Broadway runs.

Just In Time, the Bobby Darin jukebox musical starring Jonathan Groff opening tonight at a wonderfully dressed Circle in the Square on Broadway, does some serious and genuine starmaking, twice over in fact. Darin, the once hugely popular but now barely remembered nightclub singer and Top 40 hitmaker is returned to a spot in our cultural memory, and Groff, the Tony-winning star of last season’s Merrily We Roll Along and for years now one of the stage’s more popular young actors, newly emerges to the top ranks of the best, most natural all-around entertainers working today.
Some performances – think Liza Minnelli in the film Cabaret, or Hugh Jackman in Broadway’s The Boy From Oz – send their stars into new stratospheres, something outside the labels “actor” and “singer” and into that exclusive circle of stars who can hold a stage both as a character and as themselves, instantly recognizable and unique.

“It was pulling me, it was undeniable,” recalls Shannon Lewis of her desire to be a choreographer. "It was pulling me away from performing, and I was shocked to find out that I was Ok with that.” After a robust dance career with 10 Broadway credits under her belt, the artist felt her dreams shifting, and now she’s making her Broadway debut as choreographer with the Bobby Darin musical Just in Time. Broadway had what appears to be its best non-holiday (Christmas and New Year) week ever last week, with major hits like Good Night, and Good Luck, Glengarry Glen Ross, Othello and longrunners The Lion King, Wicked and Aladdin helping push the total box office figure to $50,874,940 for the week ending April 20.
The figure, for 40 shows, is a huge 47% greater than this week last year. Total attendance of 357,319 was 19% more year-over-year.
Contributing to the big tally were special nine-performance weeks from The Lion King, Wicked and Aladdin.
Even more significantly, the gargantuan total was reached with major contributions from a raft of newly arrived star-packed sell-out productions such as Good Night, and Good Luck with George Clooney, Glengarry Glen Ross with Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, and Othello...

Kevin Spacey has not taken on a single role since 2017 due to his s*xual assault allegations, but this was not the case back in the day. The New Jersey-born actor was killing it in the 90s with action-packed roles like John Doe in David Fincher’s movie Se7en (1995), Kevin “Verbal” Kint in The Usual Suspects (1995) a movie by Bryan Singer, and Lester Burnham in American Beauty a film by Sam Mendes, to name just a few.
The actor has an amazing filmography and has bagged two Oscars as well. He is someone whose name in the cast would fill up theaters. However, even a great actor like Spacey can mess up in selecting his next role and miss out on movies that go on to become hits. This often happens in Hollywood—actors rejecting scripts or, at times, being rejected by casting crews or directors.

Good Night, and Good Luck, the play about Edward R. Murrow written by George Clooney and Grant Heslov adapted from their 2005 film, grossed $3,784,200 last week at Broadway’s 1,537-seat Winter Garden Theatre, breaking its own previous $3.3 million record as the highest grossing non-musical play in Broadway history.
With ticket prices also on the upswing – average cost last week for a seat to see Clooney in his Broadway debut was $303.40, with premium seats hitting $825 – the play, which stars the ER actor as Murrow and was directed by David Cromer, is taking in more money than any play in the Winter Garden’s hundred-plus years.
