It doesn’t take long for the action in Siobhan McCarthy’s charming directorial debut, She’s the He, to kick off. The film, which premiered at SXSW, opens with two friends scheming to get laid before they graduate from high school. Their libidinous preoccupations, like those of the protagonists of Superbad, Booksmart and more recently Bottoms, are familiar. But unlike their predecessors, Alex (Nico Carney) and Ethan (Misha Osherovich) aren’t just considered losers by the vague standards of a rigidly stratified student body. Everyone also thinks they are gay and dating each other.
To change their reputation, the pair decide to come out as trans. The logic behind this plan doesn’t completely hold up, but the execution leads to an entertaining and endearing coming-of-age drama.
For the most part, She’s the He follows the beats of a typical comedic bildungsroman, but McCarthy also finds distinctive ways into the genre.

In recent years a worrying number of men on the right of US politics have stepped up to declare that had trans rights been a thing when they were at high school or college, they would have pretended to be trans in order to get into girls’ changing rooms and ogle the objects of their desire. Not only is this really not the gotcha they think it is – it doesn’t so much address others’ behaviour as their own need to be on a watchlist – it’s poorly thought through. What would really happen in a situation like that? She’s The He, which screened at SXSW 2025, aims to find out.
Meet Alex (Nico Carney) and Ethan (Misha Osherovich). They’ve been best friends for so long that everyone is convinced they’re a couple, despite the fact that Alex is always hitting on Mary (Suzanne Cryer), Ethan’s mum.

Two high school friends pose as trans women in the teaser trailer for the comedy film She’s the He, which is set to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival.

She’s the He focuses on high school friends Ethan (Osherovich) and Alex (Carney), who pretend to be trans women during the final week before graduation to help Alex connect with his crush. In the process, Ethan realizes she is actually trans.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians should make monster encounters more suspenseful by keeping the heroes in the dark about who they're facing. It's important for the show to prioritize accuracy from the books to maintain the dramatic stakes and tension in season 2. The young age of the characters in Percy Jackson series should be reflected in their vulnerability and susceptibility to being tricked by monsters.
Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians has generally been well-received, but the series can improve when it comes to the heroes encountering monsters and other villains. Season 1 sees Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Jeffries), and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) crossing paths with many iconic monsters from Greek mythology, including Medusa (Jessica Parker Kennedy), Echidna (Suzanne Cryer), and Cerberus. The series adapted the versions of these monsters from The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

Lucky Hank's cancelation after one season is disappointing, as it offered relatable characters and entertaining plotlines. The standout episode "The Clock," showcased Odenkirk's career-best performance, adding depth to Hank's character and the series. The potential for a second season explored Hank and Lily's evolving relationship and the chaos left at Railton College after Hank's departure.
Bob Odenkirk's Lucky Hank getting canceled after only one season is still disappointing to me. The series garnered positive critical reception as it earned a 93% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes following its debut on AMC in March 2023. The Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians had many exciting guest stars, and it's hard for star Walker Scobell to pick one. However, when pressed, he ultimately went with Adam Copeland.
In Percy Jackson and the Olympians, actor and Aew wrestler Adam Copeland --- formerly known as WWE's Edge --- played the role of Ares, the god of war. While at Superhero Comic Con (per Agents of Fandom). Scobell was asked to name his favorite guest stars in the series, and he shared how he's often asked about Hermes actor Lin-Manuel Miranda. However, while stating how he loves all of the guest stars, he said Copeland would be his favorite if he had to choose just one.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians season 1 offers a much more faithful adaptation of Rick Riordan's books than the initial movies, but some episodes of the Disney+ series are stronger than others. This is inevitable when breaking a story up into individual installments. In a couple of months, it will be a year since we lost the late, great Lance Reddick. His passing was a shock as it came so suddenly, and at a time where he had incredible works on the horizon. We haven’t even seen the last of his work as he’s due to make a cameo appearance as his John Wick character, Charon, in the spin-off Ballerina. He can recently be seen in the Disney+ show, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, where he fittingly portrays the Greek God, Zeus. Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4 introduces the dangerous antagonist, Echidna, who shares a complicated family history with Percy and seeks to annihilate all demigods, considering them the real monsters. Echidna and Percy are connected through their blood relation to Gaea, the personification of the earth and the supreme mother who birthed the earliest beings of the universe. Spoilers are ahead for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 4, "I Plunge to My Death."
Percy Jackson's adaptation of Echidna makes her a scarier and more psychologically terrifying villain compared to the book. Suzanne Cryer's chilling portrayal of Echidna adds to her intimidating demeanor, especially when accompanied by the Chimera. The show's decision to keep Echidna in her human form and focus on her mind games instead of her physical appearance is a smart move that enhances her intimidation factor.

They say never to meet your childhood heroes. Even the fictional ones don’t always hold up — problematic creators, disappointing endings, stories that don’t stand the test of time — and the inevitable adaptations of those juggernaut stories risk falling flat and failing to capture the magic of the original.
But fans of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson” novels — both new and old, as there is sure to be an uptick — can rejoice in the knowledge that “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” now streaming on Disney+, is more than worthy of its source material and the massive mythology behind it. Riordan himself co-created and executive produces the series along with Jon Steinberg, the pair of them extensively involved in production and writing. For adults who discovered Percy back in 2005 or new generations joining the quest with time to spare (a seventh novel is slated for 2024 publication), this hero is one worth meeting.

The Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films ushered in a wave of fantasy novel adaptations in the early 2000s. These included movies like the Chronicles of Narnia films and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The star of the two Percy Jackson films, The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters, Logan Lerman, has been vocal about his support of the new Disney+ series, which adapts the novels into multiple episodes for the streamer. Recently, Lerman appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and continued to display his excitement of the show.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Lerman told the podcast host Josh Horowitz, “The show looks amazing. I can’t wait to see you all crush it in your roles. You’re making a lot of people happy bringing these characters to life.” Lerman singled out the show’s lead, Walker Scobell, who take up the mantle of Percy Jackson,...

The cast and crew of Percy Jackson and the Olympians took over the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Wednesday night for the New York premiere of the Disney+ series.
Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Jason Mantsoukas, Glynn Turman, Dior Goodjohn and more of the show’s stars hit the blue carpet to celebrate the series and discussed working with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has a recurring role as Hermes in the series, and the late Lance Reddick, who plays Zeus.
“Lin is exactly how you’d expect Lin-Manuel Miranda to be,” Scobell, who plays Percy Jackson in the series, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He’ll randomly just break into song in between takes. It’s hilarious.”
Simhadri, who portrays Grover, shared that working with Miranda was “crazy.” “Getting to work with one of the greatest minds of our generation [on Broadway] and out, I mean, how do you not freak out in that kind of situation?...

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” star Walker Scobell has become a top contender among fans to play Link in Nintendo’s live-action “Legend of Zelda” movie. But how does the 14-year-old actor feel about the idea of portraying the hero of Hyrule?
“Actually, I don’t know. I don’t know if I’d be interested in playing Link,” Scobell told Variety at the “Percy Jackson” premiere in New York City Wednesday night. “If they came to me, I’d definitely consider it, 100%.”
Asked if he’s familiar with any of the Legend of Zelda games, Scobell said, “I have played ‘Breath of the Wild.’ I haven’t played the new one, ‘Tears of the Kingdom,’ but my dad loves Legend of Zelda. He played the games when he was younger.”

AMC has canceled the Bob Odenkirk-led series Lucky Hank after just one season, despite positive critical response. The show followed Odenkirk's character, an unlikely chair of the English department at a badly underfunded school, as he copes with a midlife crisis and his wife questions her choices. Odenkirk's current 14-year run on AMC, thanks to his role as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, comes to an end with the cancelation of Lucky Hank.
Lucky Hank has come to an unfortunate early conclusion; AMC has canceled the Bob Odenkirk-led series after just one season, per Variety. The comedy-drama followed Odenkirk's William Henry Deveraux Jr., the unlikely chair of the English department at Railton College, a badly underfunded school in the Pennsylvania rust belt, as he copes with a midlife crisis. As his life unravels, his wife, Lily (portrayed by The Killing's Mireille Enos), begins questioning her professional path and choices.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians' latest marketing teases the dual nature of its heroes' identities.
Per Comicbook.com, Disney released three new character posters of Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood, each one split between the trio in both casual and armored attire. Though all three wear their Camp Half-Blood T-shirts on both sides of the posters, Percy and Annabeth's right sides feature them wearing Greek helmets while Grover's poster includes his satyr horns and pointed ears. Annabeth and Percy can also be seen wearing the traditional Camp Half-Blood necklace, though Percy's necklace -- due to him being a new camp attendee -- lacks any beads on it.

The gifts don’t stop in December at Disney+! In addition to holiday festivities all month long like the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade and the CMA Country Christmas Special, the House of Mouse streamer will soon become the home for Whovians and Demigods.
Disney+ will deck the halls with a glut of Gallifreyan adventures and the premiere of the long-awaited “Doctor Who” anniversary specials. The first of the three debuted on BBC One and on the Disney streamer on Nov. 25, but the other two David Tennant and Catherine Tate-led serials will arrive on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Later in the month, ring in Christmas with the franchise’s holiday special with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson getting their full-episode debuts.
And the wait is over for “Percy Jackson” fans, who will see the beloved Rick Riordan book series get a (hopefully) respectful adaptation with the premiere of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

A storm is brewing, and this one could usher in the end of times.
Disney+ has released a new trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and there's a good chance it will be the streaming service's best series this year.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe imploding on both the big screen and on streaming, and the tepid response to The Mandalorian Season 3, Disney+ is betting on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
In the past, Disney+ hasn't put its marketing muscle behind projects outside the MCU and Star Wars universe.
If the series manages to break through, it will probably urge the streaming service to take more significant risks.
Adapting Rick Riordan's bestselling book series for the small screen already looks to be paying off.
While the two big-screen adaptations were criticized, everything we see for Percy Jackson and the Olympians looks like a natural next step for the franchise.

As much as coming-of-age stories like "Harry Potter" tended to suck up all the oxygen in the room during our younger years, Millennials of a certain age can't help but look back fondly on the "Percy Jackson" series. Author Rick Riordan's novels took a fantastical spin on Greek mythology and cleverly blended it with all the typical teenage angst found in YA books everywhere. This approach proved so popular, in fact, that 20th Century Studios ushered in two big-budget film adaptations in the early 2010s, following the adventures of the young demigod Percy Jackson with grand ambitions of all six of Riordan's original books. That didn't exactly pan out as expected and plans for the franchise all but fizzled out with "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" in 2013 ... not least of all because Riordan essentially disowned the films.
The upcoming Disney+ series, however, has been working overtime to right those...
