Actors Who Were Almost Cast As Star Trek's Data Before Brent Spiner
Image
Before securing the role of Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," actor Brent Spiner was perhaps most widely recognized for his recurring role as Bob Wheeler on the sitcom "Night Court." He also had one-shot appearances on various other hit TV shows like "Tales from the Darkside," "The Paper Chase," and "Ryan's Hope." He also had a bit part in the excellent cult musical "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains" and was one of the background students in "Grease 2." Spiner had been acting in Broadway productions throughout the 1970s.

Data was a boon to his career, making him a household name, and giving him a role that he would continue to revisit for decades. Spiner has always felt ambivalent about Data, however, loving the fame, but resenting how he had been typecast. He has since referred to Data as a double-edged sword. That said, his post-"Star Trek...

Data Had An Entirely Different Backstory Planned Before Star Trek's Datalore
Image
In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Datalore", the Enterprise-d is called to a distant colony where the android Data (Brent Spiner) was found years earlier. When Data was first discovered, he had no memories, although he knew he was constructed by a rogue genius named Dr. Noonien Soong. Soong was blackballed from the scientific community many decades earlier and had to retire to a distant colony to continue his work. Back when Data was discovered, by a starship called the U.S.S. Tripoli, the colony had been destroyed and Soong was missing, presumed dead. Data had no memories of what happened.

In "Datalore," the Enterprise found something else surviving among the rubble. Pieces of a second android, identical to Data, were found in a previously sealed area. Data and the Enterprise engineers reassemble it and find that it is Lore (also Spiner), another Soong android. Lore, unlike Data,...

The Langoliers (1995) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
The The Langoliers episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:

Well, it’s time to let the King have his moment again. This is Stephen King’s second go around on the show and while Silver Bullet based on Cycle of the Werewolf is a minor cult classic, it’s not one of the bigger adaptations out of his overall catalogue. Today is going to an even deeper cut. While it seems that nearly everything has been adapted, there is a lot that has yet to be turned into a show, movie, or short film. Back in the 90s and early 2000s it felt like his made for TV miniseries were happening more frequently and had more hype to them,...

The Boogeyman director Rob Savage wants to make a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Langoliers
Image
Director Rob Savage’s adaptation of the Stephen King short story The Boogeyman (read our review Here) just had a solid opening weekend of $20 million, and there could be more King adaptations in Savage’s future. If so, he has already picked out the story he wants to bring to the screen next. It’s a story that already received a mini-series adaptation back in 1995, but that one didn’t go over well. It’s the novella The Langoliers, which was featured in King’s story collection Four Past Midnight.

Written and directed by Tom Holland (the one who made Child’s Play and Fright Night), the mini-series adaptation of The Langoliers told the following story: On a red-eye flight to Boston from Los Angeles, 10 people wake up to a shock. All of the other passengers and crew have vanished. When they try to contact the ground they make no connections.

"The Gray Man"'s Explosive Ending Gives Us Hope For a Sequel
Image
Netflix's "The Gray Man" exploded into theaters on July 15 - a week before its streaming release - with an action-packed spy caper deserving of its 129-minute runtime. The Russo Brothers-directed adaptation - based on Mark Greaney's 2009 book - stars Ryan Gosling as prisoner turned CIA operative Sierra Six and Chris Evans as his psychopathic colleague Lloyd Hansen, both on a global manhunt as their organization's darkest secrets threaten to be exposed.

After a mission in Bangkok to take out one of their own, led by Regé-Jean Page's agent Denny Carmichael, goes terribly wrong, Six goes on the run in Europe to prevent the CIA's classified information - stored on a hard drive - from falling into the wrong hands (aka Carmichael's). With assistance from agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas), former CIA chief Margaret Cahill (Alfre Woodard), and mentor/CIA retiree Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Six...

Jared Leto Wanted as a Serial Killer in Denzel Washington's The Little Things
Jared Leto
Jared Leto might be lining up his next villainous role, as the actor is in talks to play a serial killer in the upcoming thriller The Little Things. If cast, Leto would be starring opposite Denzel Washington and Rami Malek, who'd be playing the police officers pursuing him. Their castings were first reported on back in May. The Blind Side and The Highwaymen helmer John Lee Hancock is also on board to write and direct, with Mark Johnson producing. In development from Warner Bros., the project is set to begin shooting this fall.

The story will follow burned-out Kern County, California deputy sheriff Deke (Denzel Washington) who teams with crack Lasd detective Baxter (Malek) in the hunt for a dangerous serial killer. According to the plot description, Deke's nose for the "little things" proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. Meanwhile,...

Have Jurassic Dinosaurs Truly Kicked Marvel Superheroes Butt at Worldwide Box Office?
'Jurassic World' velociraptor kicks Iron Man ass at worldwide box office. 'Jurassic World' officially surpasses 'The Avengers' at worldwide box office Directed by Colin Trevorrow; starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Vincent D'Onofrio; and co-executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, Jurassic World has officially become the third biggest worldwide box office hit in history. The Jurassic Park sequel – or reboot, as it's basically the same story with a slightly different twist – has surpassed Marvel's Joss Whedon-directed all-star superhero flick The Avengers, which broke box office records back in 2012. Of course, "officially" just ain't what it used to be – like, in the days before The Fall. So you wisely ask, "But which movie has actually sold the most tickets?" After all, that's the true measure of a film's popularity. Well, that's a tough one to answer without the studios providing accurate, precise numbers. And that's not about to happen. It always...

The high concept comedy stars Robin Williams, Mila Kunis and Peter Dinklage, and has also snared Melissa Leo and James Earl Jones. Titanic 3D Box Office: $2 Billion Worldwide
Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Titanic Box Office: Guy Pearce / Maggie Grace's Lockout Bombs, Julia Roberts / Lily Collins / Armie Hammer's Mirror Mirror Resilient The Titanic 3D rerelease hasn't broken any box-office records in North America, where it has taken in an estimated $44.41 million after 12 days. Overseas, however, it's another story. This weekend (which includes Wed./Thu. in some territories), Titanic 3D topped the international box office, collecting an estimated $98.9 million at 9,889 theaters in 69 territories (representing more than 100 countries), according to Box Office Mojo. In China alone, James Cameron disaster / romantic epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and veteran Gloria Stuart drew $67 million, an official record for that country (not adjusted for inflation / currency fluctuations). For comparison's sake: several years before China became a box-office powerhouse for Hollywood movies — one likely to surpass the United States in the not-too-distant future — Titanic earned $43.92 million during its initial run in that country.

Titanic 3D Box Office: Much Better Overseas
Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games Passes $300m? Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on the North American box office chart, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $21.5 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. That's quite a bit lower than the $25 million some had been expecting as late as Friday evening, or the near-$30 million predicted by Box Office Mojo a few days ago. If those estimates are correct, Universal will surely claim that American Reunion easily surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original American Pie at 2,508 sites in 1999. In 2012 dollars, however, American Pie would have earned approximately $29 million. And what that means is: many more tickets were sold for American Pie than for American Reunion. Also, remember that American Reunion cost a...

Box Office: The Hunger Games, American Reunion, Titanic 3D
Kate Winslet as Rose, Titanic 3D The Hunger Games will easily top the North American box for the third weekend in a row. Gary Ross' dystopic adventure tale collected $12.9 million on Friday, April 6, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The film will likely earn somewhere between $35-$40 million over the Easter weekend. If so, it will be down around 30-35% compared to a week ago — or about half its 62% drop-off rate last (non-holiday) weekend. The Hunger Games should cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box office on Sunday. Its current total is $282.23 million. Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on Friday. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $9.2 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. Its weekend total could reach $25 million. If those estimates are correct, Universal will claim that American Reunion far surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original...

The Hunger Games Box Office: Titanic 3D, American Reunion?
Leonardo DiCaprio, Titanic The Hunger Games will easily top the North American box office once again this weekend — its third time as no. 1 — according to Deadline.com's "sources." As per Deadline's early, rough estimates, The Hunger Games is expected to collect $12-$14 million on Friday, and could reach $40 million over the Easter weekend. If so, Gary Ross' movie would be down close to 30% compared to last weekend — or less than half its drop-off rate last (non-holiday) weekend. It seems that Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion will be the no. 2 movie on Friday, with somewhere between $8-$10 million at 3,192 locations, and an estimated $25 million by Sunday evening. That includes $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings in North America. If those estimates are correct, Universal will claim that American Reunion far surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original American Pie at 2,508 sites in 1999. Titanic Box Office: Behind The Hunger Games
James Cameron's Titanic movie Titanic 3D was the no. 2 movie on the domestic box-office chart on Wednesday, April 4, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Directed by the Marianas Trench's James Cameron, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D collected $4.37 million at 2,674 theaters, landing right behind The Hunger Games' $4.6 million at 4,137 locations. Comparisons are hard to make. The Hunger Games is in 2D, which means cheaper movie ticket prices, but it's playing at 1,500 more theaters than Titanic 3D. The Hunger Games has also been around for 13 days; Titanic 3D opened on Tuesday, earning approximately $325,000 at various preview screenings. Directed by Gary Ross, The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson. At no. 3, Jonathan Liebesman / Sam Worthington / Ralph Fiennes' Wrath of the Titans grossed $2.25 million, followed by Julia Roberts / Armie Hammer / Lily Collins' Mirror Mirror with $1.66 million and Channing Tatum...

Titanic 3D Box Office: No.1 Domestic?
Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Titanic 3D may have sailed to the top of the North American box-office chart on Wednesday, grossing an estimated $4.7 million at about 2,600 locations according to The Hollywood Reporter. That figure includes $300,000 earned at Tuesday night previews, and 71 IMAX screens. Directed by James Cameron, who made perfectly-timed headlines about a week ago thanks to a quick deep-sea trek, the 1997 megablockbuster stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Titanic's chief competition for the no. 1 slot is 2012's own megablockbuster, Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games. The Gary Ross dystopic adventure drama earned an estimated $4.6-$4.7 million on Wednesday — without the added Tuesday night bonus or box-office-boosting 3D surcharges. Paramount is (officially) estimating Titanic 3D will rake in $20 to $25 million by Friday. 20th Century Fox is handling the film's international release. Launched in December 1997, the original Titanic grossed $1.8 billion worldwide. For those who choose to ignore the Inflation Effect,...

Titanic 3D London Premiere: James Cameron, Kate Winslet
Two days ago, James Cameron made world headlines for reportedly finding himself about 11 1/4 kilometers below sea level in the Marianas Trench, which is supposed to be the deepest spot on Earth. Whether as a testament to human-made technology or human-made p.r., Cameron was actually able to tweet to his followers: "Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you." Fast forward a couple of days and Cameron is above ground in London with Kate Winslet (photo) — but not Leonardo DiCaprio — at the premiere of Titanic 3D, the (are you ready?) 3D version of Cameron's 1997 multiple-Oscar-winning megablockbuster about a luxury liner that sank to the bottom of the ocean nearly a century ago. So, does that mean the timing of Cameron's deep-sea diving to-do and the ensuing Mariana Trench tweet were merely a couple of Titanic-related p.

Titanic 3D Poster: Leonardo DiCaprio/Kate Winslet/Sinking Ship
Titanic 3D poster: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, sinking ship Titanic 3D opens April 6, 2012. But the romantic/disaster movie's poster (via moviefone.com) is already here, just in time for Valentine's Day. Directed by James Cameron, and starring youthful couple Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, following its late 1997 release Titanic went on to become the biggest box-office hit the universe had ever known — if you choose to ignore inflation, of course. Paramount, 20th Century Fox, and Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment have reportedly spent 60 weeks and $18 million on the Titanic's full restoration and 2D-to-3D conversion, which is more than double what the actual ship cost back in 1912. (Well, okay — if, once again, you choose to ignore that pesky thing called inflation.) Despite all that dough, the director-producer says the new Titanic is in "2.99D"; in other words, superior to the "2.4D" of most conversions though not exactly the 3D of, say,...

Shogun Assassin Blu-ray Review
The production concept behind Shogun Assassin is one that would often immediately put film fan’s noses out of joint but Shogun Assassin is a much loved film and with good reason. Essentially a re-edit and re-dubbing of the first two feature film instalments in the Lone Wolf & Cub series Shogun Assassin was produced as a ‘brand new’ feature for the Us market in 1980.

The film contains approximately twelve minutes of the first Lone Wolf film, Sword of Vengeance, and approximately seventy-five minutes from the second film, Baby Cart at the River Styx (both directed by Kenji Misumi). Director Robert Houston splices various sequences from these films together to create one film that obviously bears a lot of similarities but simplifies and removes plot points in places and drastically alters dialogue. Hiring deaf people to guess at what the characters could be saying Houston then took these approximations and rewrote the script,...

"The Immigrant Song": A Playlist For Arizona Governor Jan Brewer
My family and I vacationed in Arizona a few years back. We had a great time hanging around a beautiful resort in Scottsdale, hiking in some gorgeous mountains, attending a Phoenix Suns game, and even dining at my own spiritual home, Alice Cooperstown. For the time being, however, we have absolutely no plans to go back to Arizona. Now after seeing some of Governor Jan Brewer's mind-blowing meltdown performance during her debate with Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, I'm now frankly a little frightened for the good people of Arizona -- and yes, there are lots of them there too. Here's a playlist for a woman who lost her head, and a state that seems bent on doing the same. "The Immigrant Song" - Led Zeppelin "Arizona" - Mark Lindsay "Fences" - Phoenix "Elected" - Alice Cooper "Borderline" - Madonna "Tongue-Tied" - Aqualung "I Pity The Poor Immigrant"...

'Red Hill' falls to SPWAG
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to Patrick Hughes' neo-western thriller "Red Hill," starring Ryan Kwanten, Steve Bisley and Tom E. Lewis.

Produced by Al Clark and written, produced and directed by Hughes, the Australia-set film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.

No date has been set for the film's release.

Spwag's Scott Shooman, vp of acquisitions and productions, and Dan Primozic, vp of business affairs, brokered the deal with Arclight Films' Mark Lindsay, president, sales and acquisitions, and Gary Hamilton, co-chairman and managing director.

"Hughes has contemporized the revenge western with such style and adrenaline that we jumped at the opportunity to distribute such a bad ass movie," Shooman said.

Hughes is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
