Fox Leaks co-conspirator Marco Gaudino gets house arrest, probation

A Washington man has avoided prison time after he confessed to helping a Florida media consultant and former video journalist break into online platforms used by media companies, including one associated with Fox News.

At a hearing last week, a federal judge in Florida sentenced Washington resident Marco Gaudino, 25, to one year of house arrest and five years of supervised release, during which he will be under the direct supervision of U.S. Court probation officers.

Gaudino reached a plea deal with prosecutors last year, through which he admitted working with former Deadspin editor Timothy Burke to search the Internet for usernames and passwords into websites associated with major sports brands and media companies.

Some of their victims include the National Basketball Association and a broadcast platform called LiveU,...

A Florida journalist who obtained and leaked raw video clips of Fox News programs had access to content from other broadcasters over the period of several months, federal prosecutors revealed this month.

In court documents obtained by The Desk, prosecutors say former Deadspin editor Timothy Burke and a Washington resident he met on Twitter swapped usernames and passwords belonging to video transmission service LiveU and Canadian sports broadcaster Tsn (The Sports Network), which allowed Burke to access raw video files associated with sports and news programming.

Since last May, prosecutors investigating the case have been quiet on confirming the identities of the victims whose websites were illicitly accessed, though sources confirmed to The Desk that Burke’s access to LiveU allowed him to watch and record raw video transmissions associated with Fox News Channel shows,...

‘The Little Mermaid’ VFX Supervisor Details How “Truly Amazing” Halle Bailey Became a Mermaid
Image
Visual effects supervisor Tim Burke describes the complex digital effects used to put “truly amazing” Halle Bailey as Ariel and the rest of the castmembers under the sea in Rob Marshall’s new musical adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, which is projected to earn as much as $120 million over the four-day holiday.

In a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Behind the Screen podcast, Burke — an Academy Award winner for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, who was additionally nominated for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 — details the VFX process for making the film, which involved lensing the actors on rigs and the creation of hundreds of CG creatures under the sea.

To capture the performances of Bailey and other actors playing aquatic characters, “it really seemed that the principle for this would be to put actors on...

Federal Prosecutor Investigating Leaked Tucker Carlson Fox News Footage; Report Links Probe To Search Of Media Consultant’s Home – Update
Image
Updated: A federal prosecutor is investigating the alleged hack of internal Fox News video footage of former host Tucker Carlson, as clips have surfaced on Vice and watchdog group Media Matters for America.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that the probe is linked to a recent FBI search of the home of media consultant Tim Burke, who formerly worked for Deadspin and The Daily Beast, and is married to Tampa Bay City Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak.

The Times cited a letter that Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Trezevant sent to the network, in which he wrote that Fox News was one of the “potential victim-witnesses” of the hacking. Deadline also obtained the letter, dated on Thursday, in which Trezevant wrote that the investigation is of allegations of unauthorized computer access, interception of wire, oral or electronic communication, conspiracy and other federal statutes.

As of yet, no one has been accused of...

‘The Little Mermaid’ Review: Rob Marshall’s Live Action Take On Disney Animated Classic Is A Winner Both Above And Under The Sea
Image
Disney’s attempts to reinvent their animated classics as live action versions has proven to be largely a smart boxoffice play, but one with a mixed creative result. Certainly some were huge hits like Bill Condon’s Beauty And The Beast and Guy Ritchie’s less enchanting Aladdin. Others effectively created photo-real animals in The Lion King and The Jungle Book. Older Disney staples have gotten the treatment by focusing on the villains in Cruella and Maleficent and their sequels, even an unfortunate Disney + attempt on the untouchable (if you ask me) Lady And The Tramp. But even approaching an animated masterpiece, 1989’s The Little Mermaid and essentially trying to make a splashy (sorry) big screen live action musical that works above and under the water seems dicey on paper. So what do you do? Bring in Rob Marshall, and as it turns out that is all the new live action The Little Mermaid needed.

‘The Little Mermaid’ Director Rob Marshall On Turning Animated Classic Into Live-Action Summer Disney Musical: Q&a
Image
Exclusive: After a herniated disc during a Cats performance prompted Rob Marshall to switch from dancer to director, his first feature, Chicago, won Best Picture. It has been a charmed run for Marshall since, with hits from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to Memoirs of a Geisha, Nine, Annie, Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns. Rarely has Marshall been as charged up as he is after coming through a four-year ordeal to turn Disney’s 1989 2-D animated classic musical The Little Mermaid into a live action feature. Beyond the logistical complexities of staging a musical set half undersea and the other half on land where the title character sacrifices her voice for a chance at life as a human, the film is the most color blind major studio adaptation of a classic property you’ve ever seen.

Start with the title character, here played by Halle Bailey,...

Fantastic Beasts 2 Gets David Sakurai as Magical Villain
J.K. Rowling at an event for Harry Potter et les Reliques de la Mort : partie 1 (2010)
While Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 has already been shooting since mid-July, with the first Fantastic Beasts 2 set photo surfacing last month, it seems the cast is still coming together. A new report reveals that Danish-Japanese actor David Sakurai has come aboard to play a villainous new character, connected to the dark wizard Grindlewald, played by Johnny Depp. It isn't clear if David Sakurai has already started shooting his scenes, or how long production is expected to last for.

Deadline broke the news today, revealing that David Sakurai is playing a character named Krall. The character is described as "one of the ambitious and sulky henchman" to Gellert Grindlewald. The story is set in the year 1927, a few months after the events of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, where magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) captured Grindlewald in the first movie. Grindlewald promised that he would make his escape,...

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’: A VFX Creature Guide
J.K. Rowling at an event for Harry Potter et les Reliques de la Mort : partie 1 (2010)
The real stars of J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts,” of course, are the creatures themselves.

They’re animated by a gaggle of VFX all-stars: Framestore, Double Negative, Mpc, Image Engine, among others, overseen by production VFX supervisors Christian Manz and Tim Burke.

The mandate from “Harry Potter” veteran director David Yates was not too make the creatures overly fantastical and thereby unrelatable, which is why there are so many distinct animal influences. And originally the VFX supervisors envisioned individual environments for each beast inside the suitcase, but Rowlings suggested that wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) would have to be as powerful as Valdemort to pull that off, so they scaled it way back. Here are a few of the highlights:

The Niffler

This badger-like creature has a penchant for stealing treasure. “He was always going to be a cheeky character that’s always trying to get out to steal stuff and embarrass Newt,...

Harry Potter Creatures Run Wild in New Fantastic Beasts TV Spots
Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Eddie Redmayne, and Katherine Waterston in Les Animaux fantastiques (2016)
Three new TV spots have arrived from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And if they seem overly familiar to you, perhaps its because this new Harry Potter spin-off is curbing from the original Ghostbusters and it's recent sequel. As we see in this latest footage, Newt Scamander is responsible for unleashing an army of crazy critters on New York City. And now, he must clean up the mess and save the day!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander, played by acclaimed actor Eddie Redmayne, has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident...Were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt's fantastic beasts, which could...

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Final Trailer Is All That’s Best In Potter Films
As we get closer to the mid-November release, we finally get a truly in-depth look at Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it turns out that it was worth waiting for.

Anything related to the Harry Potter franchise really needs no further sell, but even though the book and film series is almost universally loved, some films are better than others, and certainly some books leave something to be desired. Moreover, some installments aim toward the simplistic, while others (especially when considering the films) look to broaden the scope of the dialog.

They’re all good, but that means something different in some cases. For example, Alfonso Cuarón’s Prisoner of Azkaban stands out among the film as the richest effort, which hoped to elevate the text and its themes.

If the trailer can be believed, it looks as though this one is moving in a similar direction,...

Cool Behind-the-Scenes Look at Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
J.K. Rowling is taking fans back to the world of Harry Potter in Warner Bros. latest project, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She wrote the script for the film, which is being directed by David Yates. The movie is going to introduce us to a ton of new characters that existed in America in the 1920s, years before the events of Harry Potter.

The story centers on Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a British magizoologist who travels to New York City with a case full of magical creatures. The creatures in that case end up escaping, and that's what sparks the adventure.

During the Celebration of Harry Potter 2016 in Orlando, Florida, a behind the scenes featurette was released that offers up some footage and additional information from the film that fans are going to want to see. It also includes interviews with members of the cast and crew.

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: Third Harry Potter Movie a Major Letdown. Is CGI Enough to Create On-Screen Magic?
'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' poster. With Daniel Radcliffe. Rupert Grint. Emma Watson. 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' quiz question: Does state-of-the-art CGI equal movie magic? (Oscar Movie Series) Alfonso Cuarón seems like an odd choice for director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third installment in the Harry Potter movie series. That is, if one thinks only of Cuarón's pre-Harry Potter sleeper hit, the François Truffaut-esque Y tu mamá también, while ignoring two of his earlier efforts, the critically acclaimed A Little Princess and the moderately respected Great Expectations. This time around, working with a reported $130 million budget (approx. $163 million in 2015), state-of-the-art special effects, and the Harry Potter franchise, Cuarón surely could do no wrong. At the box office, that is. For although Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is stylistically superior to Chris Columbus' previous work in the series,...

Off-Broadway’s “Nothing But Trash” a Real Treasure
Rory Max Caplan (left) and Andy Halliday in Nothing But Trash

Photos source

One of the clichés of gay works of theater is that they often have to be considered “edgy” in order to be significant. Even though we’re at last past the point where gay plays must end tragically, the idea that gay works must still be in some way provocative or boundary-pushing persists. That’s one of the reasons why Nothing But Trash, now playing at Theater for the New City until March 23th, is such a pleasure to behold: it goes in the other direction, and does so exquisitely.

In a move from the Charles Busch playbook, Trash lovingly eviscerates the gee-whiz films of the 1950’s by mimicking the very specific cadence of the dialogue (and musical cues) while casting gay boys and drag queens as its main players. Even the straight boys are pretty much gay.

Tim Burke's The Lucifer Effect to Debut at Cannes; First Details, Trailer, and More!
With filmmaker Tim Burke's found footage documentary The Lucifer Effect set to debut at Cannes, we’ve procured a trailer for the flick, word on the allegedly "cursed" feature, and its unique viral marketing campaign.

The Lucifer Effect made headlines last year when one of the participants was almost throttled by another cast member as police seized the footage and the film was put on hold. However, despite the film’s director also having gone missing, it has been completed by a new documentary film crew [Editor’s Note: captained by L.A. Slasher director Tim Burke] and is now set to premiere at Cannes.

From the Press Release:

The film studies the social condition known as "The Lucifer Effect," a psychological consequence that is said to occur when "good" people are given power over others in an evil place. The experiment was first conducted in the 1970’s during the infamous Stanford Prison experiment, and now the film's producers have...

The 84th Annual Academy Award Winners
The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.

It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.

Here's the full list of nominees with the winners in bold.

84th Academy Awards Winners – The Artist Takes Best Picture
Crowded House said it best in the lyrics “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream its over.” Yes, the awards season officialy came to an end tonight at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. Tears, jubilation, substance and style were all memorable moments at the 84th Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s shenanigans earlier on the red carpet and no huge upsets, Cirque du Soleil’s performance was the highlight of the evening.

The Oscar for Best Motion Picture of the Year went to “The Artist” produced by Thomas Langmann and Michel Hazanavicius won for Achievement in Directing. The movie becomes the first silent film to take the gold since the original Oscar ceremony 83 years ago when Wings won.

"The Artist," "Hugo" Win Big at the 2012 Oscars! See Complete List of Winners of the 84th Annual Academy Awards aka Tribute to French Cinema!
The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.

But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.

"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."

Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.

There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.
