Laika Plots Re-Releases, New Merch and Partnerships for 20th Anniversary | Exclusive
Image
The Portland, Oregon-based Laika has, in its first 20 years, become as identifiable an animation brand as Studio Ghibli or Pixar.

The studio is known for their handcrafted stop-motion-animated tales that flirt with the macabre and, while being (so far at least) for all audiences, never forgo their edge. And, in celebrating their 20th anniversary leading up to the release of their latest feature “Wildwood” next year, the company is pulling out all the stops, with a lineup of new product releases, partnerships, exhibitions and publishing initiatives. This includes everything from a redesign of the official site (by creative agency Monks) to new merchandise coming to the official shop to a series of videos from Devon Rodriguez (you can see an exclusive video below) to a Rizzoli coffee table book called “Laika: The Magic Behind a Stop-Motion Dream Factory.” For the next year, everything is truly coming up Laika.

Stop-motion classic ParaNorman will return to theaters for a limited time this Halloween
Image
This Halloween season, we will have the chance to go back to Blithe Hollow, Massachusetts and re-visit 11-year-old Norman Babcock. That’s right, Laika’s stop-motion masterpiece ParaNorman will be back in theaters for a one-week engagement this October.

Laika previously did something similar with its 2024 re-release of Coraline, bringing it to theaters in 2D and RealD 3D, and that was a huge success. Coraline brought in $56 million world-wide during its re-release, making it the top-grossing stop-motion film of all time.

ParaNorman won several awards upon its initial release, and it will be presented in remastered 2D and RealD 3D formats. The re-release kicks off the 20th anniversary celebration of Laika.

ParaNorman’s re-release will feature a new animated short by Laika, titled ParaNorman: The Thrifting, which is directed by Thibault LeClercq (the lead character designer for Laika). Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Anna Kendrick (Woman of the Hour) lent...

Laika’s Second Act: How the Stop-Motion Animation House Is Reintroducing Itself to Fans
Image
It’s been six years since the release of “Missing Link,” the fifth stop-motion animated film from the Portland-based animation house Laika. If you don’t remember it, that’s because the $100 million film — though well reviewed with an 88 percent Rotten Tomatoes score — was a financial bomb, bringing in only $26.5 million globally. Prior Laika films were all budgeted in the $60 million range and were almost all consistent performers at the box office with around $100 million globally, but reports at the time estimated “Missing Link” could have lost over $100 million after expenses.

The onset of Covid-19 in early 2020 didn’t help Laika bounce back. The pandemic severely hampered the company’s ability to work by hand in their tactile animation facility in the Oregon woodlands, such that production on the company’s next ambitious stop-motion epic, “Wildwood,” did not formally begin until September 2021. The company’s founder, Travis Knight, in the...

The 13 Year Old Classic 'ParaNorman' Starring Anna Kendrick Is Getting a Re-Release and a New Short
Image
Following the success of Coraline’s re-release to theaters, another Laika production will find new life. According to Variety, the 2012 stop-motion film, ParaNorman, will hit theaters from Fathom Entertainment just in time for Halloween. The event will feature a new remaster of the film in 3D and be accompanied by a new short entitled: “ParaNorman: The Thrifting.” The additional content will star Anna Kendrick and Stranger Things alum Finn Wolfhard. Wolfhard has made a name for himself in genre fare with features such as Ghostbusters, It, and starring and directing his own horror film, Hell of a Summer.

Information about Kendrick and Wolfhard’s roles is sparing, but considering the former’s role in the original film, it is a good guess that she will be reprising her part as Courtney Babcock from the studio that continues to break records. Laika’s operations officer, David Burke, also gave context to...

Protein Review: More Guts Than Your Average Gangster Flick
Image
Protein drops you straight into the damp chill of a forgotten Welsh town, a place where the sky is as grey as the mood. Here we meet Sion, an ex-soldier whose hulking presence says more than he ever does. Haunted by his past, his life is now a simple loop of survival and intense gym sessions.

The film doesn’t waste time with a slow burn. When Sion sees the gym’s kind owner being abused by a local thug, he responds with shocking force. His brand of justice, however, is fueled by something far stranger than revenge.

He has a very specific dietary need to maintain his physique, a requirement that puts human flesh on the menu. This single, brutal act, born of a grotesque logic, is misunderstood by the town’s criminals as a declaration of war, setting a match to a very damp powder keg.

An Art Form Grows Up: The Transformation and Evolution of Animation Is Celebrated at Annecy
Image
Thirty years after Pixar launched a revolution when it introduced the world’s first fully computer animated feature, “Toy Story,” its anniversary will be marked amid another sea change at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where the close-knit animation community gathers in the picturesque French city on Lake Annecy near the Swiss border.

The festival will take place from June 8-14 amid a collision of artistic, business and technological shifts, driven by factors from a post-strike business climate to AI developments. “It’s just south of chaos,” admits Pixar Animation Studio’s chief creative officer Pete Docter, who was a young animator at Pixar when Woody and Buzz were birthed. But as the industry evolves, he remembers the words of Disney legend Joe Grant, one of the writers of “Dumbo,” who years ago advised Docter to remember that the business is cyclical.

“I keep that in the...

This Alternative Artist Landed a Top-20 Chart Debut With an Album Made Almost Entirely on His Phone
Image
D4vd just locked the second-best debut on the Billboard 200 this week, and he did it almost entirely on his iPhone.

The rising alternative act’s Withered, his debut album following viral hits like “Here With Me” and “Romantic Homicide,” landed at No. 13 on the Billboard chart with 30,000 units sold, sandwiched between Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft and Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

It’s a solid opening in its own right as the 20-year-old — who has 32 million monthly listeners on Spotify and is signed to Darkroom/Interscope — lands a top-15 debut for his first album, but it’s particularly notable given his recording process. While at-home recording has of course ballooned in the digital era as recording equipment has gotten cheaper and higher quality, making a successful commercial album on a six-inch phone screen is another step further.

‘Interstellar’ and ‘Coraline’ Rereleases Were Box Office Triumphs. Why Aren’t Studios Doing More?
Image
At 10:41 a.m. on Dec. 6, outside the Lincoln Square AMC Theatres in New York City, a middle-aged woman stopped in front of a man holding a sign that read: “2 Free Tickets Interstellar Now.”

“Right now?” she said.

“Right now!” he replied, before revealing a hidden cost on the back of the sign: “1 Hug.”

She happily paid his price for the rare commodity: a matinee seat for a film that came out a decade ago. In secondary markets online, tickets to Christopher Nolan’s 2014 space epic had been listed for weeks for as much as $215, after all 166 Imax screens sold out for the duration of the rerelease. Last weekend, “Interstellar” pulled in $4.57 million domestically, more than any new movie, and, at $27,500, a higher per-screen average than top grossers “Moana 2” and “Wicked.” Demand is so high, in fact, that Imax is expanding the theater count for next weekend.

The accomplishment...

How Laika’s ‘Coraline’ became the re-release hit of the year
Image
The commercial potential of re-releasing archive titles in cinemas is not news to the US studios, which are increasingly looking for spots in the calendar to reissue classic titles. And especially what may be termed modern classics: films that resonate with audiences who perhaps first saw them – in theatres or at home – 10 to 20 years ago.

But the success of last week’s 15-year reissue of Laika stop-motion animation Coraline – by Fathom Events in North America and Trafalgar Releasing in international markets – is currently concentrating minds in both distribution and exhibition.

Re-released in both 2D and 3D on August 15, Coraline opened...

‘Coraline’ Is a Box Office Hit Again, Marking a New Chapter for Laika
Image
Re-releases of classic films aren’t supposed to make much of a mark at the box office. They usually serve as a helpful stopgap for theaters to bring in a little extra revenue during slow periods on the release slate. But “Coraline” has proven otherwise — and its newfound success has caught the attention of Hollywood.

The debut film from stop-motion animation Laika Studios returned to theaters courtesy of Fathom Events and Trafalgar Releasing this past weekend for its 15th anniversary, and set a record for those distributors with the most successful re-release in their history with $29.3 million grossed worldwide. Last weekend, the film grossed $9.6 million from Friday to Sunday, enough to put it in the top 5.

For comparison, in its original theatrical run from Focus Features in 2009, “Coraline” earned an unadjusted $75.2 million domestic and $124.5 million worldwide. For an inflation-proof comparison, turn to Mexico, where “Coraline” sold 1.6 million tickets. As of Tuesday,...

Tom Burke says godfather Alan Rickman was a ‘huge influence’ on his life
Tom Burke
Actor Tom Burke has reflected on how influential his godfather, the late Alan Rickman, was on his life.

Rickman died of cancer in 2016, at the age of 69. He was a good friend of Tom Burke’s parents – actors David Burke and Anna Calder-Marshall.

Talking about Rickman in a new interview with The Observer, Tom Burke said: “When Alan died, Juliet Stevenson got it right when she said we’ve lost a king. You did sometimes feel like you were at Alan’s court. He had a sense of mission about him and was invested in so many people.

“Even if you only met him once, he could become a momentary huge influence in your life. He had a way of asking very penetrating questions, often without necessarily meaning to. People would walk away and make quite big life decisions.”

Burke also said he had started reading Rickman’s diaries, which...

Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Allen Leech, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Lily James, Fifi Hart, and Oliver Barker in Downton Abbey (2010)
Downton Abbey alum Allen Leech and Normal People star India Mullen are set to lead the cast of The Vanishing Triangle, an upcoming Irish drama series for AMC Network’s Sundance Now. As reported by Deadline, the pair will headline the six-part series, which is expected to start production later this year in the U.S., U.K., and Ireland. The show (and its title) is inspired by real-life events that shook Ireland in the 1990s when several women began disappearing, starting when American woman Annie McCarrick went missing in the spring of 1993. ‘The Vanishing Triangle’: ‘Downton Abbey’s Allen Leech & ‘Normal People’s India Mullen To Lead Sundance Now, Virgin Media & Eccho’s Irish Drama Series
Image
Exclusive: Allen Leech and India Mullen will lead the cast of an Irish drama series for AMC Networks’ Sundance Now and local broadcaster Virgin Media Television, we’ve learned.

The pair will topline six-part drama The Vanishing Triangle, which goes into production later this year with a U.S.-UK-Ireland production set-up, and Eccho Rights attached as international distributor. The show is inspired on true events that shook Ireland in the 1990s, when several women disappeared. The show title is regularly used in the Irish media to refer to the events, which began with the disappearance of American woman Annie McCarrick in 1993 and spiraled to involve many similar cases.

‘Benedetta’ Review: A Guilty-Pleasure Nunsploitation Movie From the Director of ‘Basic Instinct’
Image
Lest anyone think Paul Verhoeven’s latest shocker was intended to be a serious look at sexuality in religious service, the promotional poster for the film plastered around the Cannes Film Festival — where “Benedetta” bowed in competition — depicts actor Virginie Efira dressed as a 17th-century Italian nun, her white habit pulled open to reveal an airbrushed nipple. This is an erotic film, full stop, and though “Benedetta” is smarter in various respects than such sisters-in-exploitation as “Put Your Devil Into My Hell” and “The Killer Nun,” in others, it’s much, much dumber.

Let’s begin with the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary that is young Benedetta’s most prized possession when she enters the Theatine convent as an 8-year-old novice, and that, by the film’s end, will have been whittled into a shape through which ecstasy is far more easily achieved. Everything is either obvious, vulgar or...

Father Of The Cyborgs - Jennie Kermode - 16846
David Burke
They call Phil Kennedy the father of the cyborgs, a man intelligent enough to connect the brains of paralysed people to computers, giving them back a means of connecting with the world, yet not smart enough to tell his girlfriend before undergoing elective surgery on his own brain. He's the kind of subject who makes a documentarian's life easy, yet director David Burke has gone all out to make this film visually interesting and richly contextualised. If you have no prior knowledge of this type of science then it may take you a little while to find your feet. If you know it well, you'll find this more interesting as a character study than revelatory. Either way, it's a stimulating experience.

This is the kind of subject routinely described by outsiders as "more like science fiction than science fact," and accordingly Burke opens the film with clips from assorted science fiction.
