Matt Damon is currently in the middle of filming The Odyssey, the next film from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, but arguably the most controversial project of the star’s career has stumbled into streaming success almost 10 years later. Damon stars alongside Pedro Pascal in The Great Wall, the 2016 historical action epic following a group of European mercenaries who encounter a secret army that defends the Great Wall of China against deadly creatures. The Great Wall began streaming on HBO Max at the start of July, and it’s become one of the most popular movies in America, sitting at #5 at the time of writing. The film earned abysmal scores of 35% from critics and 42% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it even turned a profit off its $150 million budget by grossing $334 million globally.
The Great Wall was plagued with controversy even before its release, but once the film hit theaters, things didn’t get any easier.

She said the name! Julia Garner's Silver Surfer namechecks her world-devouring boss, Galactus, in the just-released final trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
It's the first time we've heard that name uttered onscreen in any of the advanced marketing materials for the Marvel Studios production, which opens in theaters on July 25. And it's only appropriate that Garner is the one to put a name to the intergalactic giant's looming shadow given that the Silver Surfer is Galactus' herald.
While we previously heard Garner's Surfer voice in the first First Steps trailer, the character has more — much more — to say here. "I herald his beginning," she says as she descends from the heavens above to the Earth below. "I herald your end. I herald... Galactus."
That's not news that the First Family — whose ranks include patriarch Reed Richard (Pedro Pascal), his better half, Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), her hothead brother,...

The zombie horror genre has always been popular, but some films did it better than others. Ahead of a new zombie film, the addition in the 28 Days Laterfranchise, 28 Years Later, set to premiere on June 20, the highest-grossing zombie film of all time is making a splash on streaming.
In 2013, Brad Pitt starred in World War Z, which is now having a resurgence on streaming. The film recently headed to a new streaming home, its studio Paramount Pictures' streaming platform, Paramount+. However, it didn't make an imminent impact on the streaming platform, but World War Z reached the Top 10 globally on Netflix,Tudum reports.
World War Z has had a long, complicated relationship with Netflix. The zombie film left the streaming service in October 2024, but it's still available internationally. For the week between June 9 and 15, World War Z debuted in the charts again in seventh place. It received 3.8 million views and 7.4 million hours viewed.

Unfairly Maligned $540M Zombie Movie Gets New Lease Of Life On Netflix Following 28 Years Later Hype
A divisive zombie movie looks to be getting a boost on Netflixin the wake of the release of 28 Years Later. Back in 2002, 28 Days Later helped to breathe new life into the largely dormant zombie movie genre. It took a new approach, not making the zombies mindless and staggering creatures of the undead, but rather rage-filled killers who moved quickly like rabid animals. Its success was a reminder that the zombie movie genre still had a lot of potential. The zombie genre continued on with notable entries over the years, with 28 Years Later being the latest.
Just as with 28 Days Later, the long-awaited sequel seems to be reenergizing interest in zombie movies. 28 Years Later's rave reviews have suggested it is a return to form for the genre, which may lead to another resurgence. In fact, the excitement over 28 Years Later's release looks to...

Brad Pitt had the year 2013 on lock when World War Z premiered in theaters. The film was such a success that, although its Rotten Tomatoes score isn't the highest, it still brought in over half a billion at the box office (with a $190 million budget). There were hopes of a World War Z 2, but supposedly, talks of a sequelwere "put on pause," with others saying it was canceled due to budget issues. Fans have created trailer concepts, movie posters, and all, yearning for another dose of former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane. Now they are kind of getting their wish, as World War Z VRwill be released this August.

Having experienced the Covid-19 pandemic, the world has had a small taste of navigating a widespread outbreak of disease, seclusion, and an alarming decrease in the availability of toilet paper. When compared to the conditions of a zombie apocalypse, similarities surface, exposing the disturbing flaws of human nature and, on a more positive note, our inclination to establish a found family and form connections in unlikely places. Our desire to survive while also maintaining what’s left of our humanity becomes paramount to salvaging our sanity while increasing the possibility of finding solace in a world gone to shit. Here’s the thing, though. To survive, you’ve got to follow the rules. Without order, chaos reigns. Without precaution, you’re likely to end up as a screaming pile of zombie chow instead of living in a fortified lap of luxury, sleeping atop a bed of Twinkies. Ruben Fleischer, the director of 2009’s Zombieland,...

Bill Maher Pitches New Grammy Categories: “Best Song That Trump Got Sued for Playing at His Rallies”
If the Recording Academy is listening, Bill Maher has some ideas for new Grammy categories.
With the 67th annual Grammy Awards just days away, the comedian took a moment during the latest episode of HBO’s Real Time to suggest some new creative categories for music’s biggest night.
While the Grammys typically only air a handful of top categories during the televised ceremony, such as album, record and song of the year, dozens of more awards are handed out during a premiere ceremony earlier in the day.
“We’re very excited because we are the award kings out here and it is Grammys weekend,” the host quipped at the beginning of the segment. “And it’s going to be a great weekend.”
After sharing the actual names of some of the non-televised categories, Maher decided he would propose some new music categories that he brainstormed. Although, in all honesty,...

We're ready to close the books on an eventful January. But one late-night TV show still has to have its say about what happened this month: Real Time with Bill Maher.
The month has given late-night TV a lot to talk about, including the January 6 anniversary and subsequent pardons, Donald Trump's inauguration, the string of executive orders, the LA wildfires, and the deadly airplane crash in Washington, D.C.
What Bill Maher will choose to talk about is anyone's guess. But the good news for fans is that there will be a brand-new episode of Real Time with Bill Maher tonight, January 31.
It's likely Maher will join other late-night TV hosts by responded to Trump's theory that Dei initiatives played a role in the collision between an Army helicopter and a commercial flight. The confirmation hearings for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Kash Patel, and Tulsi Gabbard are likely also on the table.

A wide range of supernatural creatures crop up in horror books, and zombies make especially terrifying villains to read about. This is partly because they start out as humans, meaning just about anyone can turn during a zombie apocalypse. This truth forces readers to face their own mortality, as well as the harsh reality that even loved ones can become monsters.
With such grim messaging, it's no wonder zombie narratives are so popular within the horror genre. Some of the most terrifying horror books out there center on the undead. There are also plenty of great stories that put more unique twists on this common concept.

The World War Z ending went through some major changes before the film was released with a dramatically different conclusion originally planned for the zombie blockbuster. Starring Brad Pitt and released in 2013 amid the zombie craze in Hollywood, World War Z seemed destined for success until reports of major reshoots surfaced. Nevertheless, when audiences and critics alike saw World War Z, most were somewhat surprised to see that the end result was a decent big-budget zombie movie that proved to be a solid box office hit.
Indeed, despite director Marc Forster and the crew scrapping the original World War Z ending, the movie remains an exciting and entertaining entry both in Brad Pitt's filmography and in the zombie horror sub-genre. However, the movie was also vastly different from the book it was based on from author Max Brooks and it seems as though the movie had a difficult time adapting...

While he may be best remembered for his tough guy roles in classics like The Godfather and (Best Movie You Never Saw fave) Thief, actor James Caan had a soft side. Back in 1976, he did a cameo (as himself) in the underrated Mel Brooks comedy Silent Movie. The role led to an unlikely friendship with the director, helped by the fact that they only lived about a block away from each other. In his fabulous book, All About Me! (Buy it here), Brooks affectionately remembers how, around the time they were shooting Silent Movie, Caan’s dog gave birth to five puppies, and he offered one to Brooks, and his wife, the legendary actress Anne Bancroft.
“Anne and I took him up on that,” Brooks remembered. “We went to his house, and one of the pups left the pack and made his way over to us. So, instead of picking out a pup,...

Maher tried to balance things between show business chat and trying to draw out De Niro on a few political topics. He acknowledged the actor’s greatness by reading off a laundry list of films enhanced by De Niro’s work, and asked what goes into deciding which film to work with.
“I see the possibility,” he said. “Some I’ve been involved with from the inception. They’re movies I’ve felt were worthy. I think I have a pretty good average. I just pick certain things, that I feel are good, well-written, or smart, or the director’s good. Scorsese, I just go with him no matter what’s he going to do.

World War Z 2, if it had been made, could have addressed the major complaints about the first movie not being faithful to the source novel. World War Z was a big box office success that grossed $540 million, opening the door to a potential sequel that Fincher was slated to direct before being canceled.

There was a time when David Fincher was attached to direct a sequel to the zombie epic World War Z, you may recall, but we learned back in 2019 that it was no longer happening. So what happened? And what would Fincher’s take on the material have been like?
Chatting with GQ UK this week, Fincher opens up about the unmade sequel.
“Well, it was a little like The Last of Us,” Fincher explains. “I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing, because The Last of Us has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff.
“In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite. They used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.”

David Fincher teases that there has been talking of doing a World War Z remake that stays true to Max Brooks' original book. The 2013 movie was a box office success and Fincher was, for a time, attached to direct a sequel, but it ultimately never came to fruition. The book and the original movie differ significantly, with Brooks' tale taking the form of a series of interviews conducted 10 years after the Zombie War.
David Fincher's planned World War Z sequel never got made, but the director now teases that there's talk of revisiting the franchise in the form of a remake. Based on a book of the same name by Max Brooks, World War Z stars Brad Pitt as U.N. employee Gerry Lane, who races around the world in an attempt to stop a zombie plague. 2013's World War Z was a major zombie movie hit, and there are many other great zombie movies that are great to follow it up with. Based on Max Brooks's eponymous 2006 novel, World War Z follows ex-u.N. Investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) and other characters as a zombie outbreak erupts across the world, zombies literally climbing over one another to get to their human prey. World War Z would become one of 2013's biggest movies, pulling in $540.5 million worldwide.
While a sequel to World War Z was initially planned, it ultimately did not move forward despite the first film's strong box office success and reception. While cast members like Mireille Enos speak about World War Z 2 hopefully finally happening, as the movie approaches its 10-year anniversary, zombie lovers have no shortage of equally enthralling tales of the undead to check out. Here are 12 great zombie movies to watch...

Most of Matthew Fox's scenes in World War Z did not reach the movie's final cut, which confirms the zombie thriller's biggest narrative problem. Based on the acclaimed novel written by Max Brooks, World War Z is a breathless roller coaster of never-seen-before zombie action scenes. Although its overarching storyline is linear and avoids delving too deep into its primary character beats, the survival flick sets one action set piece after another to keep viewers at the edge of their seats throughout its runtime.
Other than featuring a torrent of white-knuckling showdowns between humans and the living dead, World War Z also boasts a talented ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Daniella Kertesz, Mireille Enos, Elyes Gabel, and Matthew Fox, among others. Despite accommodating a high-octane across-the-globe zombie adventure for Brad Pitt's character in its limited runtime of two hours, World War Z gives enough screen time to most of...

On the surface, World War Z looked like a big financial success back in 2013 when it scored a whopping $540 million at the global box office. But according to Deadline, the film barely broke even for Paramount at the time. A variety of factors, including extensive reshoots, ballooned the budget up to $270 million per the outlet, plus another estimated $160 million for marketing. The Marc Forster-directed zombie blockbuster starring Brad Pitt didn’t make much of a dent for the studio. The tepid critical reception, on top of all the rumors of a troubled production behind the scenes, seemed like the final nail in the coffin for this fledgling franchise.
But according to the LA Times, Paramount and Forster had always viewed the big screen adaptation of the incredibly popular Max Brooks novel as just the first chapter of a film trilogy. And initially, Paramount did intend to move forward with a sequel.

World War Z's original ending, which was drastically different from the film's actual ending, could have saved the franchise's future. World War Z is loosely based on World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, came out in 2013 and enjoyed a healthy level of success. A sequel was initially planned until Paramount canceled it in 2019 for several logistical reasons, but Brad Pitt still hopes to make the sequel happen one day.
The original World War Z ending was deemed too abrupt and incomplete, so Paramount spent millions of dollars rewriting and shooting the final 40 minutes of the film. World War Z's original ending was much more similar to the book's ending, but Paramount felt that it would not be satisfactory to the audience, so it was ripped up and drastically rewritten. While World War Z's ultimate...

In an unexpected twist, Paramount's 2013 blockbuster mash World War Z has shambled back from the dead and into the box office top ten. The action horror film, directed by Marc Foster and starring Brad Pitt was released to generally positive reviews a little over 8 years ago, landing Paramount Pictures a fairly healthy (then) box office take of $540.5 million, against a budget of between $190 - $269 million. Just goes to show that you can't keep a good zombie down.

“When you’re dead, you can’t do much,” Mel Brooks says in his first overt political statement without a punchline. It is a big turnaround from the position he took while making the 1995 vampire comedy, Dracula: Dead and Loving It. But Brooks has enough limits in his life right now. He can only see his son and grandson through protective glass. His closest friend, the late and wonderful Carl Reiner, no longer picks up morning coffee. Brooks is endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden for president because President Trump is “not doing a damn thing” about the coronavirus pandemic.
“My father, @MelBrooks, is 94. He has never made a political video. Until now,” Brooks’s son, author Max Brooks, tweeted along with a video of Mel addressing the camera while his son and grandson stand forlornly behind a glass window.

My father, @MelBrooks, is 94. He has never made a political video. Until now. #MelBrooks4JoeBiden#BidenHarris#GrassrootsDemHQ pic.twitter.com/yQZhopSbNV

In the minute-long clip, Brooks is shown quarantining in his home while his son and grandson stand behind glass doors. “They can’t be with me. Why? Because of this coronavirus,” Brooks said.
“And Donald Trump’s not doing a damn thing about it.

Mel Brooks is the latest in a growing number of Hollywood figures endorsing former vice president Joe Biden for the 2020 election. On Wednesday morning, the Egot’s son Max Brooks shared a video of the comedy extraordinaire explaining his decision to vote for Biden.
“Hi folks, I’m Mel Brooks and behind me you see my son and my grandson. They can’t be with me. Why? Because of this coronavirus and Donald Trump’s not doing a damn thing about it,” he says indoors as Max and Brooks’ grandson wave from outside. “So many people have died, and when you’re dead you cant do much. So I’m voting for Joe Biden.”
In his first political video ever, according to his son, the Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein writer-actor says that he likes Biden since the former Delaware Senator “likes fact” and “likes science.”
“Joe will keep us going.
