Ram Gopal Varma On 22 Years Of His Mother Of Multistarrers – Bhoot
Image
Ram Gopal Varma’s eerie Bhoot, which clocks 22 years on May 30, stars, hold you breath, Rekha, Tanuja, Urmila Matondkar, Victor Banerjee, Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Fardeen Khan….Varma is nothing, if not a pathbreaker. His Bhoot would be considered his finest directorial undertaking to date if Satya and Company hadn’t come along earlier on. Bhoot lacks the the spatial dimensions and dramatic impact of Company. While the “action,” if it can be called that, in Bhoot is largely situated in and around a highrise apartment in Mumbai , there are constant undercurrents of smothered expressions threatening to implode on Varma’s stunningly mounted frames. But like bits of bright molten lava, the tensions always recede just in time to remind us that in life, as in art, drama isn’t about what we see, but what we feel.

Throught this 2-hour song-less excursion into the realm of the supernatural, Varma...

This Day That Year: 8 Years Of Monit Suri’s Half Girlfriend
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at Mohit Suri’s 2017 Half Girlfriend starring Shraddha Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor, in a new This day That Year feature.

Director Mohit Suri known to make cinema on compulsive love takes the theme of self-annihilation in a romantic association to the extreme, bringing out his hero, a Bihari non-English medium type in Delhi who falls for a girl much higher than her heels and his social status, as a love-struck wimp obsessed with his object of adoration to the point of complete self-ruination.

This was how Chetan Bhagat meant his novel to be. The man-woman equation was seen in the light of status and social standing and then judged within the parameters of a heart-to-heart connection. Director Suri amplifies the theme of love between unequals. The complications are frail and far-fetched. Rustic Bihari Madhav Jha is not only incurably in love with socialite Riya Somani...

Bokshi  (2025) “IFFR” Movie Review: Bhargav Saikia’s Mystical Witchcraft Tale Packs a Daring Punch in a Modern Tale of Dominion and Revolution
Wang Bing and Sonia Buchman
IFFR’s vast selection of films this year, particularly in the Harbour section, presents a blend of various genres that evoke the magic of contemporary cinema at its finest. “The Youth Trilogy” by Wang Bing has set a significant benchmark for Asian cinema while “An Unfinished Film” by Lou Ye captivated audiences at Festival de Cannes. Moreover, “Grand Tour” by Miguel Gomes, which won the Best Director award at Cannes 2024, has also joined the Harbour section of IFFR. Also featured is Bhargav Saikia’s feature directorial debut, “Bokshi,” a modern interpretation of supernatural horror with a cult element that warrants a following.

Teen girl Anahita has numerous questions swirling in her mind. She’s constantly troubled by everything that surrounds her on the outside— extreme teasing and bullying, blame and rejection, family pressure, and suppression. However, her troubles extend beyond external factors. She is continuously troubled by what occurs on the inside,...

When Kangana Did A Hooch Version Of Uma Thurman’s Kill Bill
Image
Subhash K Jha examines the one where Kangana did a version of Uma Thurman’s Kill Bill in Sai Kabir‘s Revolver Rani (2014).

In a scene straight out of a street play, Kangana Ranaut, playing what seems like a cross between Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and Seema Biswas in Bandit Queen, Kangana in Revolver Rani which clocks 11 years on April 25, tells the mother of a young girl, “Teach her how to shoot a gun. It’s the only way she can survive.”

Revolver Rani (Rr) is an enormously disturbing and yet deeply satisfying tribute to many things at the same time. Director Sai Kabir (who had previously directed an unreleased film) pays a hefty homage to many filmmakers, among them Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj, Quentin Tarantino, Mehboob Khan, and Shekhar Kapoor. And yet, for all its derivative aspirations, Rr is a fiercely original piece of cinema, crafted with compelling concentration and impassioned intuition.

As Deepa Mehta’s Stunning Water Clocks 18 Years, Subhash K Jha Revisits The Neo-Classic
Image
What do you say about a film that hits you hard where it hurts the most, so hard that it takes your breath away? Water belongs to that rare category of films that have the power to re-define the parameters of cinema, to re-align the function and purpose of the medium, and to re-structure the way we, the audience look at the motion -picture experience.

It’s no coincidence that Deepa Mehta’s heroine is named Kalyani. Lisa Ray, as the tragic but irradiant widow, seems to echo Nutan’s Kalyani in Bimal Roy’s Bandini.

The tragic grandeur that Water wears on its resplendent sleeve is a quality that sets it apart from other reformist dramas. The film has a great deal to say about the plight of socio-economically challenged women, specifically the widows of Varanasi in the 1930s. The burning ghats and the waters that flow from them...

A Look Back At Anushka Sharma-Prerna Arora’s Pari
Image
Subhash K Jha takes a look back at Anushka Sharma-Prerna Arora’s PariPari is not an easy film to watch. While it duly declares that no animal was harmed during shooting, animals, including a pet dog and a parrot come to horribly harmful deaths in a plot that impales its characters to Satanism and challenges all the traditional tropes of the horror genre.

There are no creaking doors and shrieking banshees in Pari. The atmosphere is deceptively placid. Director Prosit Roy and his estimable cinematographer Jishnu Bhattcharjee shoot the macabre proceedings in the fading light of a terrifying twilight. Seldom have I seen a film’s look and appearance so commensurate with its mood, theme, and treatment.

This is not the Kolkata of Durga pujas and Howrah Bridge. Not even the bright tram-travel romantic city of Onir’s Kuch Bheege Alfaaz. Not a glimpse of the iconic landmarks...

Subhash K Jha Looks At The Exquisite Tapestry Of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Cinema As The Director Turns 60
Image
No one does it quite like Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Slb). His cinema weaves passionate dreams into the operatic language, creating a world so beautiful you wish it really existed. In an industry where filmmakers think flying cars and smashing chorus dancers are the acme of aesthetics, here is that rare creative genius in the tradition of V Shantaram, Raj Kapoor, Mehboob Khan, and Bimal Roy who toils over frame and every costume of his incandescent heroine as if his life dependent on it.

Here’s looking at Slb’s enchanting oeuvre.

1. Khamoshi: The Musical (1996):

Some say Slb’s first film about the beautiful, vulnerable Annie (Manisha Koirala) trying to cope with the possessive demands of her deaf and mute parents is still his most honest work. The truth is Khamoshi fell prey to dishonesty when the original tragic ending of Annie’s death had to be changed on distributors’ demand.

Throwback: When Salman Rushdie Spoke On Midnight’s Children, Controversies, Aamir Khan & Favourite Actors & Authors
Image
After years of holding back Booker-winning author Salman Rushdie finally consented to let his dear friend Deepa Mehta film his most celebrated work Midnight’s Children. As the film turns 16 on February 1, we recall an interview with Mr Rushdie on the film.

How effectively and deeply has the film Midnight’s Children managed to convey the spirit and essence of your novel?

I’m happy that so many people who have seen the film have felt that it did justice to the original. Various Indian writers have seen it already, including Anita Desai, Kiran Desai, Suketu Mehta, and I’ve been much heartened by their approval.

Which of the actors in Midnight’s Children, in your opinion, have nailed their characters most effectively?

We are incredibly lucky in our cast. The performances throughout the film are outstanding, and it would be hard to pick out one or two names. But if you twist my arm,...

Vivah Turns 18: When Shahid Kapoor Scared His Co-Star On Set
Image
Do You Know Shahid Kapoor Spooked His Vivah Co-Star Samir Soni? (Photo Credit – Amazon)

While modern-day Bollywood fans know Shahid Kapoor for his intense roles like Kabir Singh and Jersey, millennials remember him as the soft boy who would sweep the audience off the floor with his cute looks. With his debut film, Ishq-Vishk, he was instantly the talk of the tinsel town. But after a few films that did not do well at the box office, his career dwindled when Vivah was released. It turned the tide for him.

Vivah came out in the early part of Shahid’s career, and his chemistry with co-star Amrita Rao and Sooraj Barjatya’s simplistic direction touched a beautiful chord with the audience at that time.

Fardeen Khan is making a notable comeback with Visfot, an edge-of-your-seat thriller directed by Kookie V Gulati. Following his return to the Ott platform with Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar and the big screen with Khel Khel Mein, Khan teams up with Riteish Deshmukh in this film.

Visfot is an official remake of the 2012 Venezuelan film Rock, Paper, Scissors. The plot centers on two families from starkly different backgrounds—a Mumbai slum and a luxurious high-rise whose lives intersect in a tragic explosion. The film follows Fardeen Khan’s character, who is wrongfully accused of the crime and must navigate a web of corruption and deceit to clear his name.

“Sarfira Is Akshay Kumar’s Best Since Airlift” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Sarfira

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Radhikka Madan

Directed by Sudha Kongara

Sudha Kongara’s Sarfira takes you by surprise. It is a solid entertainer about a man with the uni-focus of Arjun with that arrow and the fisheye. Sudha Kongara’s remake shouldn’t be dismissed just because it is what it is: a remake. True, the basic story about the man who dreamt of making air travel affordable for the poor, remains unchanged. As it should. Director Sudha Kongara and her co-writer Shalini Ushadevi have transcreated the Tamil original into a Maharastrian milieu without ruffling too many feathers.

I found the first fifteen minutes when Veer Mhatre (Akshay Kumar) deals with an aviation crisis (the pointer to a flashback) and his early marriage proposal to and courtship of his future wife Rani, to be annoyingly obstreperous, as though director Kongara was struggling to find a voice amidst the adaptative chaos.

‘Sarfira’ Review: An Imitation in the Disguise of a Remake
Image
Sudha Kongara’s Sarfira, a remake of her Tamil film Soorarai Pottru (2020) and adapted from the real-life events depicted in the book Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey by G. R. Gopinath is the tale of an underdog who dreams of spreading his wings high up in the sky by starting India’s first low-cost carrier airline. As he embarks upon fulfilling his near-impossible objective, he eventually confronts obstacles one after the other and tackles them with resilience and grit. It is an inspiring tale where an individual from the lower strata of society fights the authoritarian powers of a society that does not believe poor people have the right to be equals. The antagonist comes in the form of a rich and powerful business tycoon who has all the wealth and influence to manipulate the rules and regulations of the aviation department. As the story moves forward, we are made...

Arunabh Kumar
(Ians Review) Vijay Varma underplays cop in muted crime drama (Ians Rating: **1/2)
Arunabh Kumar
New Delhi, July 30 (Ians) An eight-part crime drama, written by Arunabh Kumar and jointly by director Sumit Saxena, KaalKoot is a hard-hitting series without the regular embellishments that adorn web series on Ott platforms. It’s unsparing but not entirely uncompromising.

Sub-Inspector Ravi Shankar Tripathi (Vijay Varma) is the kind of young cop who you’ll not easily come across not just in small towns such as Sirsa in Uttar Pradesh (not to be confused with the Haryana town), but even in bigger cities and metropolises.

Such ordinary people with a streak of honesty and commitment may be few and far between. Essentially, such modest and obscure men often are mistaken for being average and having low self-esteem.

He lives with his widowed mother (Seema Biswas) for whom he is the be-all-and-end-all. Her married daughter being away, she has pinned all her hopes on him.

Things are not what they seem though.

It was an amazing experience to see people laughing throughout the film at the absurdity of characters, situations, and their reactions to serious subtle issues of contemporary India. Generally, satire films hardly get invited to festivals around the world. I never expected...

Sanjay Leela Bhansali Talks ‘Padmaavat’ Trauma, ‘Devdas’ Cannes Triumph as he Reflects on a 25-Year Career (Exclusive)
Image
Indian film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has seen it all – from being physically attacked on the sets of “Padmaavat” to walking the red carpet at a triumphant Cannes screening of “Devdas” – in his 25 years of filmmaking.

A graduate of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India, in Pune, Bhansali equally consumed the oeuvre of Tarkovsky, Uday Shankar’s “Kalpana” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “One From the Heart.” While he could not fathom the Russian auteur’s work in its entirety, “something about how a visual works on the soul of the audience if it’s receiving correctly, and the power of the images, is what I imbibed more than anything else,” Bhansali told Variety.

These days, striking imagery and grand storytelling is what Bhansali is best known for.

He made his mark choreographing the songs of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “1942: A Love Story” (1994), starring Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala,...

Know more about the people who complete ‘The Family Man’

"How can we not talk about family when family’s all we got," Wiz Khalifa once said. It clearly is one of the most important things in any person’s life, without which they remain incomplete. While fans can’t get enough of Srikant Tiwari and his new nemesis, Raji, played by Samantha Akkineni, here is an appreciation for the key characters from this series without whom, the magic which this show has created would not be possible.

Suchitra (Priyamani)

The most important thing between a couple is understanding and respect for each other. Even though there were some hurdles in the lives of these love birds, Suchitra always had Srikant’s back and we can’t wait to see how their chemistry unfolds in the new season.
